Business / Re: Osun Farmers Head For Lagos In Aregbesola's Osun Farmers Trains Project by seyi42k(m): 8:51pm On Nov 21, 2011
Kobojunkie:

Questions for you  . . . .

a) You say Lagos Rail project is using FORMER NRC Lines, what has that to do with this particular case?

b) Are you certain that NRC GAVE UP Yaba Stations to Lagos State or are you simply assuming that because you see improvement at the Yaba Station, then it AUTOMAGICALLY has to be the Lagos state Government, not NRC, doing the work at the station?  According to the Lagos state document on the lines, there is no mention that Lagos is now IN CHARGE of the Yaba Station. The document at the link below continually references those lines as belonging to NRC.

http://www.lagosrail.com/_downloads/Lagos%20Red%20Line%20Project%20Briefing.pdf

c) A Progressive, as far as I am concerned, is not same as a GOOD GOVERNOR. With Good Governors, we have substantial evidence of returns on investments made. Professing liberal ideas DOES NOT make one a GOOD GOVERNOR/LEADER. So, why is this man any different from Akala, who, also had some good/progressive ideas, though far and in-between?
answers for you,

1) it is called an analogy.

2) while I might not be able to locate the link, I read it that Lagos was going to improve part of NRC lines that it is going to use. It would make no sense for NRC to repair tracks for Lagos to use especially with the kinds of politics at play or repair some part of its lines leaving others alone.

3) while I know you that you understand the political realities of our nation. I was speaking in relative terms. Regardless of how you try to deny it, ACN governers (at least fashola) has put other governors under pressure to at least do something for the people. Like I said I do not hold brief for them and do not deny our corrupt polity however another governor could have come in to clean out the public office and still not do anything. As for Akala having progressive ideas!!!
Business / Re: Osun Farmers Head For Lagos In Aregbesola's Osun Farmers Trains Project by seyi42k(m): 8:47pm On Nov 20, 2011
I believe Aregbesola could have signed an MOU that would enable him do this.

Remember that part of the Lagos Rail project will make use of former NRC lines and as such the Lagos state govt had to rehabilitate part of those lines with the blessing of the NRC. For example the station at Yaba is being improved.

While not holding brief for ACN, I believe most of its gpvernors are progressives. Afterall, the likes of Akala stole from the people and never gave 'free' rides.
Crime / Re: NNPC Top Executive Murdered In Abuja By Her Driver by seyi42k(m): 5:04pm On Nov 17, 2011
Hi guys,

While not justifying a wrong act, I believe aloy had a point. Sometimes, especially if God has blessed us, we should avoid sweating the small stuff. If the story the guy was out to get her because of her insistence that the guy repair her car is true, then I believe we should all pray that God should give us the wisdom to overlook somethings.

My friend once told me of a haughty in-law who overtook and forced a car with four guys to stop because she felt slighted about how they overtook her car. The guys were amused at her audacity because it turned out that they were heavily armed robbers. They however let her go after warning her sternly. My point was that she could have lost her life because she wanted to make a point. My point is not to castigate the dead as we do not have full details of all that happened but for us to learn that walking away sometimes does not mean we are foolish.

Another issue that was pointed out was the fact that she was staying alone in a big house with two males. Regardless of what anyone might say, that is very dangerous indeed. Infact, I heard from my mother the story of a successful female pilot killed in the same manner. This just seem like deja vu once again.

If a lady must stay alone due to any kind of reason, then her children and/or brother(s) or better still her husband must stay with her. To put it in contrast, have you ever witnessed a female in the process of boarding a bus full of only male passengers, they are never at ease as it is better to be late than sorry. Staying alone, especially in a big house, in a society dominated by unemployed youths with idle minds and high testosterone levels is calling potential problems on ones head.

Let us pray for Godly wisdom in these situations.

Thanks

Hi guys,

It is with a heavy heart that I am posting this response even though I did not want to but it will be irresponsible of me not to let you know. Do not do business with Vegeta. He has shown himself to be untrustworthy and it is because of people like him that will make ebay and amazon never trust Nigerians. Infact it will be a long time before we can have our own ebay for that matter.

Due to that fact that I buy and sell stuffs on Nairaland, I saw a thread by Vegeta stating his desire to sell his playstation 3. I agreed to buy the console only without accessories or pad for 25k and the transaction was concluded at Alaba at one of his acquaintance's shop. I had no reason to doubt or question him as he assured me that their was no issue with the console and he sounded sincere. Moreover, I felt he was a good Nairalander. Unfortunately I was wrong.

However, he failed to disclose that the console had a motherboard issue which happens often that shuts down the console. When it happened, I went online to check for a remedy and that was when I knew I had been sold a dummy. Still, I did not want to believe that he did it knowingly and has such I sent him various messages and also called the number he even pasted on this thread. He neither responded nor acknowledged them but I was still ready to give him the benefit of the doubt believing that his phone or number might have been misplaced.

Has such I pasted on this thread, as shown below, seeking audience with him only for him to paste a mocking smile in response;

seyi42k:

Vegeta,

I called you several times to day and even sent you two text but you have not responded.

It is on the ps 3.

I therefore called his acquaintance in whose shop in Alaba we consolidated the deal, only for the guy to chuckle on the phone and told me to come to Alaba. He then explained to me that he was aware that the console had the issue but he felt everything had been explained to me and that I knew Vegeta well. He then stated that he was amazed that such a thing could be done to me and advise me not to even bother repairing the console has he had two of such consoles because no matter how well you repair them, they still get bad.

Therefore guys be careful.

So Vegeta, You may have played smart but you will definitely reap bountifully what you have sown. I work in a financial institution and can assure you that if banks like oceanic can collapse due to such issues, yours is therefore assured and it is all down to time. I do not have the urge or time to come to Alaba to come after you as the opportunity cost of doing so is high. The day will come when you will be rewarded. The funny thing is if you sat beside me in a bus, I wouldn't even know you only that I felt that you were a nairalander with a profile to uphold.

Therefore, knowing that I did not steal the money I gave to you neither did I dupe anybody, let me share your smile smiley and wish you the best in all your future endeavour.

Have a nice day.
Education / Re: Covenant University: Accounting Student Graduates With 4.99 GPA by seyi42k(m): 9:01am On Jul 27, 2011
Hi guys,

Having read arguments for and against, I believe all parties have a point. Give the average Nigerian student an enabling environment and he/she will perform. That said, I believe a 4.99 might be mathematically inconsistent though the guy might be very good.

Also, it is possible for the guy to have challenges in secondary school (didn't we all) and still do well in a tertiary institution. It is all down to focus and determination.

However, we are not dealing with the real issue, which is that someone like that and people like him should be employed by the government, research institute, universities, chartered bodies e.t.c to focus on research that will enrich their respective courses. The irony of it all is that the best that will come out of all this is probably a scholarship that will lead to a job in Shell or Mobil but the whole nation and academic community loses out.

For Werepeleri who said he got 4.91 from Unilag, that is very possible and it is laudable. I graduated from accounting department in Unilag in a set that had 15 1st class in 2005, infact we had the best graduating student for the whole school. Before cynics start criticizing, those guys were all brilliant including majority of the class and you know why, the jamb that brought us in was brutal as that was the period jamb brought paper coding and the rest. Therefore most of the students that got in across departments in Unilag merited it and it was also true that their jambs scores were not all that fantastic including mine but it showed that we did it ourselves.

The point I am making is that all the 15 1st are gainfully employed in Auditing firms, Banking, Oil and Gas etc and you know what, they are no different from me that graduated with a 2:1 because we are all employees and not employers of labour. Infact, their complain is no different from mine.

That, my friends, is the real tragedy of Nigerian Educational system I will rejoice the day a Nigerian 1st class graduate become a farmer that feeds millions, develop our silicon valley, build our first car and design our first rocket but until then we will hear in the next 1 or 2 years about another academic feat by a Nigerian student.

So let us leave the guy alone and hand him over to his prospective employer to determine the viability of his result. After all, he will probably end up in an Oil & Gas firm, audit firm or bank telling his subordinates in the future how he graduated with a 4.99 CGPA.

^I heard a joke once.

That while America is busy fighting terrorist, Nigeria is busy fighting tourist. grin

You know what people, if the Fashola administration says it wants to build a Nuclear plant, I will be in support because you know what, anything the mind can conceive, it can achieve. An American president once said that people lack will, not strenght.

As long as this administration and subsequent administration can have the will to push lagos forward, mark my words, we will no longer be talking of railroads and airports but even generation and selling of electricity to neighboring countries.

We should be thankful that we are seeing this kinds of development in our own times. I sincerely never believed I could get disoriented in oshodi because the old landmarks have been pulled down and you can walk even at night.

snthesis,

You choose to higlight problems. Obviously you do not live in Lagos or if you do, yo do not work on the Island. Mind you that flood on the road is usually a highlight of any coastal city epecially ones below sea level.

The issue is not flooding but drainages and I can tell drainages in Lagos has improved. I work in VI and usally raining season is always a time to be afraid due to traffic but not anymore. An hour after rain, one usually wonders whether it was the same water logged VI as the water virtually disappears.

Instead of getting upset over flooding, why dont you let us tap from your wealth of knowledge and show us a better drainage system. Even Fashola has said that he knows about peolple's problem but what he wants to hear are solutions not rehashed whinings.

If you people are not excited about development in Lagos, maybe we should continue to wallow in mediocrity and vote Alao Akala as president and the likes of Ibori as the Vice.

@londoner

You are talking of an ideal situation and not the situation on ground. Granted, Lagos should have achieved more but can you imagine what would have happened if the progresses recorded in Lagos were not done.

You talk as if other cities suddenly jumped and became what they were, mind you most modern except the Dubais of the world have been in existence for years and some over a thousand years. Even though Lagos was the capital, why did Buhari cancel the metro line project? what housing plan the federal government have?

If not for Jakande, a state governor, can you imagine the housing problems lagosians will be facing now. Even Abuja which is now a federal capital is hurriedly pushing on its light rail project on the account of the initiative from Lagos.

Let us just thank God that Lagos is progressive, if not no other governor in the whole country would have been under the pressure they are now to deliver.
Politics / Re: There Is Need To De-congest Lagos And Industrialise The South East - Jonathan by seyi42k(m): 2:26pm On May 19, 2011
I usually dont respond to these threads, I'd rather read. However, I felt I should make somethings clear.

1. All "Yorubas" have always felt pride in the achievement of each other. It is not unheard of to see a lagosian lauding an Ekiti man for coming from a state that produces highly intelligent people. Also, the Egbas (mind you I dont regard Obj as Yoruba as he is not a progressive) seem more politically savvy. In short, we are Yoruba Parapo.

2. I hail from Ondo State and I am not ashamed to state that if I have the opportunity I will take up Lagos citizenship as will a lot of Ibo men. Mind you, an Ibo man is a commissioner as well as a local government chairman in this state and there are a lot of ibo men in Lagos government.

3. While I much admire the enterprising nature of the Ibo man, I am appalled by his smartness, i.e. the first instinct of an average ibo trader/businessman is to cheat you even if he/she will get a better deal on the long run. This has contributed to the "me only attitude" which is displayed by their leaders to the detriment of the people.

4. Someone pointed out that, Yorubas do not have business in the east. Go and check any big business in the east, you will find the Yorubas in finance, accounting and engineering departments. This is as a simple result of the rate of education which means that though the Yoruba is not unnecessarily aggressive in commerce, he is highly educated and enlightened.

5. I believe everyone has contributed to the growth of Lagos. In fact, I will readily slap a fellow Yoruba man who tells me that I do not have a right to anything in Lagos as I would any other tribe. However, if not for the deliberate progressive nature of the Lagosian and in effect the Yoruba Man, our polity would not have gained in the kind of stride it recorded in this past election. The impact of the Tinubus and the Fasholas cannot be over-emphasized which when contrasted with Chris Ubas, the difference is quite clear and that was why ACN became the most improved political party in this last election.

Therefore, it does not matter where a Yoruba man is from, even in Brazil, He will feel pride in Lagos. As for the South South, do not be under the illusion that you have the monopoly of wealth, i.e Oil, in the country. Let everybody do a study of mineral resources in all parts of the country especially the North and you will be amazed.

In fact, Nigeria has up to 250 mineral resources in commercial quantity and we have not started on Agriculture. Bitumen has taken over farmlands in Ondo state.

In short guys, let every one of us go back to our states and demand that all these resources be developed, then you will see that an hausa man or a fulani or an ibo or deltan will not leave there region for any other region.

Phew,  smiley

If you truly have both offer letters, just Go directly Shell, becuase you can always get back into CBN but the likes of Shell is a one in a lifetime opportunity.

Also, working in Shell, even as an IT staff, gives you more international clout and lets not even talk about pay package for all levels of their staff. In addition, the impact of internal politiking on carreer development is low organizations such as shell as compared to the likes of CBN.

Ultimately, pray to God to direct you.

It is only in Nigeria we say things like this. What concerns you whether one is harder that the other? Dont you have a career path?.

As for ICAN being harder than ACCA. That is complete rubbish. Go and ask any ICAN graduate doing the professional stage of ACCA exams, they will tell you that they are worlds apart. Mind you ICAN is now working to match their certification and standard with that of ACCA.

ACCA is not about cramming but application of knowledge. You can visit their website and see the tons of materials there and you can also compare it with ICAN's website. Therefore, this is my opinion below;

ICAN = Local champion. Relevant if you are looking for an accounting related job only in Nigeria.
ACCA= Internationally acclaimed. Relevant if you are looking for jobs in Nigeria and Abroad.
CPA= Equivalent of ACCA in America and from what I hear, it is broader and probably tougher
CFA= Internationally acclaimed. Relevant if you are interested in investment banking and trading in financial instruments.
