PoliticsFree Education: Fayemi Is Deceiving Ekiti - Oni by shagaman(op): 9:01am On Oct 18, 2010
The declaration of free education in Ekiti State by the governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has been described as the beginning of governance by deceit in the state.

Chief Media Aide to former Governor Segun Oni, Mr Wale Ojo-Lanre, who said this in a statement made available to journalists in Ado-Ekiti, on Sunday, maintained that education in the state was free before Fayemi became governor, adding that, “it amounts to high level of deceit for anyone to be talking of offering free education in a state where primary and secondary school education was not only tuition-free but free textbooks and laptops (with VSAT) were also provided.”

But the state government has reacted by saying that it expected the former governor to be remorseful after wasting three years and resources of the state for the period. It added that the Oni-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) government was not known with any laudable achievement.

“Our attention has been drawn to the promise of free education made by Governor Fayemi after his swearing-in on Saturday and we wish to remind him that education was free in Ekiti State before he assumed office.

“Though we have opted to refrain ourselves from going into the circumstances that brought Fayemi to power, because we believe in the omnipotence of God and His ability to judge men according to their deeds, we must, however, not shy away from our responsibility of putting the records straight for posterity’s sake.

“As of Friday, October 15, only students of the 22 boarding schools in Ekiti State were paying N10,000 per term, while no fee was paid in other schools (both primary and secondary).

“Apart from non-payment of tuition fees, free textbooks were provided while WAEC and NECO fees were paid by the government.

“It is also important to point it out that the Federal Government has declared primary education free throughout the country under the Universal Basic Education (UBE) scheme and this has been on for years. In addition to this, pupils of primary schools in Ekiti State had been enjoying free egg and cocoa drink twice in a week, under the School Feeding Programme.

“Furthermore, we have taken Ekiti State away from the comity of states where students of public schools receive lectures under the tree, inside dilapidated classrooms or carry chairs and desks to the school. We solved those problems by construction of thousands of classrooms, including storey buildings in our schools and also provided school furniture adjudged as the best in Nigeria.

“The Ekiti State that we left is a state where education is functional and parents were already withdrawing their wards from private schools and bringing them to public schools because we did not only made education free, we made it functional by providing free laptops to students of boarding schools.

“It, therefore, amounts to grand deceit and attempt to play to the gallery for the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN)-led government to be promising Ekiti people free education that they already have,” Ojo-Lanre said.

But the ACN-led government, in a reaction signed by prominent aide of the governor, Mr. Yemi Adaramodu, said the PDP ousted governor should rather show remorse and apologise to the people of the state for wasting their billions of naira during the illegal years he spent in office.

“Ekiti PDP government was not known for any laudable achievement during its sacked aberrant tenure. Mr. Oni wasted three and a half years oscillating between failure and confusion.

“We sympathise with the PDP in its present circumstantial trauma as we expect its members to be remorseful after wasting more than N300 billion on mere window dressing and imaginary achievements.

“Free education was possible for the sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, when his political adversaries were spending resources on vainglorious projects as the illegal Segun Oni regime did. We reiterate that the era of the locusts is over in Ekiti and tenure of possibilities has been divinely given.

“The shortsightedness of Ekiti PDP will hunt its members till their remnants will be swept off from our political terrain to give way to everlasting progress in Ekiti State.

“We advise the PDP to embark on atonement for unleashing unprecedented terror, povety and pestilence on Ekiti people, rather than its present unremorseful posture,” the government said.
PoliticsUae Court Extradites Ibori To Uk by shagaman(op): 8:52am On Oct 18, 2010
LAGOS—CERTAINLY, these are not the best of times for former two-time Governor of Delta State, Chief James Ibori. A United Arab Emirates, UAE Court of Appeal in Dubai, Sunday, ruled that he be extradited to Britain to face trials for allegedly looting the treasury of the state during his tenure.

This was just as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, described the Dubai Court ruling as a landmark judgment.

Ibori was also accused of laundering his alleged loot through several British banks, using lawyers, relatives and close associates.

Chief James Ibori
The UAE court judgment followed evidence-laden request from Britain, supported by Nigeria. Sources close to the ex-governor said he would appeal the verdict, stressing that he has 30 days to file and receive an appellate judgment at the UAE Supreme Court.

An online publication said the Dubai Court, in a two-to-one split decision, held that Britain had shown enough reason to tie Ibori to the commission of a crime to warrant his extradition to London.

The Dubai legal system has three main stages: The Court of First Instance, the Court of Appeal and the Court of Cassation. The Ibori case started at the Court of Appeal, and is expected to go the Superior Court of Cassation before it is concluded.

Avalanche of evidence

The case took so long because the UK Metropolitan police had to translate an avalanche of evidence and affidavits to make a solid case about Ibori’s culpability in money laundering and thus made a strong application for his extradition to London.

The UK police also made references to the successful trial of two female associates of Ibori in London which has so far led to the jailing of Ibori’s sister, Christine Ibori-Ibie, and his mistress, Udoamaka Okoronkwo (nee Onuigbo) for money laundering.

Both women are serving prison terms at the all-female Holloway prison in London.
In 2007, a UK court froze assets allegedly belonging to Ibori worth $35m (£21m). His annual salary was less than $25,000.

He had already left the UK when his assets were seized. He was first arrested in Nigeria in December 2007. And in 2009, a court in Asaba cleared him of 170 charges of corruption, saying there was no clear evidence to convict him, sparking the anger of the EFCC.

Ibori was arrested in Dubai on May 13, 2010. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, accused him of stealing $290 million, about N43.5 billion. Last April, his supporters attacked the police who tried to arrest him in his home town. He thereafter left for Dubai where he was arrested.

Ibori’s wife, Theresa Nkoyo, and one of his UK_based lawyers, Bhadresh Gohil, are also currently facing trial in a London court.

EFCC says it’s landmark judgment

Meanwhile, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has described the Dubai Court ruling which declared that former Governor of Delta State, Chief James Ibori should be extradited to the United Kingdom to face corruption charges as a landmark judgment.

In a telephone chat, yesterday, spokesman of the anti_graft agency, Mr. Femi Babafemi said: “The Dubai court ruling is not unexpected in view of the weight of evidence provided by the EFCC, to support the process filed by the UK Met police.

“This is also an affirmation of the fact that justice is universal and can be served in any part of the world without hindrances.”

The former governor was said to have appealed against the judgment to the Supreme Court of the United Arab Emirate.
SportsFifa Probes Adamu Over Bribery Scandal by shagaman(op): 8:49am On Oct 18, 2010
FOLLOWING allegations of bribery against two of its executive members, the world football governing body, FIFA, may have suspended indefinitely, the final vote on the 2018/2022 World Cup bids.

An investigation was launched, weekend, into allegations that two FIFA officials, Nigeria’s Dr. Amos Adamu and Reynald Temarri of Oceania Football Confederation, offered to sell their votes to one of England’s rivals in the race to host the 2018 World Cup.

FIFA is understood to be considering postponing the decision on who will host the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

Amos Adamu
London-based The Sunday Times claims to have caught Nigerian Amos Adamu, a FIFA and CAF executive committee member, on film, telling an undercover reporter he would guarantee his vote in exchange for 500,000 pounds.

The newspaper’s reporters said they were working for a group of private American companies which wanted to help win the World Cup for the US.

The US pulled out of the race, weekend, saying it wanted to focus on bidding for the 2022 tournament.
England is one of four countries left in the race to host the 2018 tournament.

The reporters involved in the story emphasised they had no links to the bid and that the US committee’s campaign had been completely above board.

During a meeting in London with Adamu, who is also President of the West African Football Union, WAFU, he was alleged to have told the reporters that he wanted money to build four artificial football pitches in his home country.

The newspaper said a second member of the committee, Reynald Temarii, who is President of the Oceania Football Confederation, asked to be paid for his vote as well.

In his case, they said he wanted the money to finance a sports academy.
FIFA has asked for all materials relating to the allegations.

A spokesman said: “FIFA and the FIFA Ethics Committee have closely monitored the bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups and will continue to do so.

“FIFA has already requested to receive all of the information and documents related to this matter, and is awaiting to receive this material. In any case, FIFA will immediately analyse the material available and only once this analysis has been concluded will FIFA be able to decide on any potential next steps.

“In the meantime, FIFA is not in a position to provide any further comments on this matter.”
The other contenders to host the 2018 World Cup are Russia and joint bids from Belgium-Holland and Spain-Portugal. The Oceania Football Confederation also announced, yesterday, that they were investigating the reports.

A statement said: “OFC is aware of the story that appeared in The Sunday Times in England today. As such, OFC is currently looking into the matter.”

My brother,

Nigeria and things are hard, its very difficult to think sometimes cos of situations, and people would tell u different things, but to be honest there is a Yoruba adage that says, when it faces u face it,when it turns its back turn ur back but when u are alone think about it and take a decision,i started up with a job that paid 12k a month after 3 months i was in dept of like 45k,i could cope then GOD smiled on me i got a bigger job of 35k,it wasnt easy as i had so much debt to pay but with desire and prayers i got a much better offer tru someone i met at the 35k job who felt i was doing to much for 35k,my brother i earn little less than 200k a month now and all this happened within less than 16 months and u know the funniest thing i have a 3rd class but it didnt bother me as i was determined that i was going to be where i wanted, what is ur end plan? The beginn is not the end, follow ur heart, but for me u must have a beginn,
