Okay so here it is people. cheesy

First of all, my case is kinda peculiar and not the regular ones common here. As such, I do not know if my transcript will help due to that, but I sincerely hope it gives someone some clarity or guide for their own interview.

Date: June 26, 2019
Venue: Lagos Consulate
Time:6:30 a.m
Gender of VO: Male
Window: Window 9. (guy was doing fingerprinting initially, but later The CGI guys blocked him off for interviews) Kinda heavy set, with beard.

VO: Good Morning, Pass me your I-20 and passport.
ME: Good Morning again (VO looked up at me when I used “again” with the good morning. Well this was cos he had done my fingerprinting) while I gave him a very big smile… and then passed the requested documents to him.

VO: Why are you going to US?
ME: I am going for a doctorate degree in Human Sciences with a specialization in global family health (stumbled a bit) and wellbeing, at UNL, Lincoln, Nebraska.

VO- I see you are going to Nebraska?
Me- Yes I am.

VO: Is that the main campus? Lincoln?
ME: Yes.

VO: You been to Lincoln?
ME: Yes I have.

VO: How long did you stay in the US? And where have you lived in the US
ME: About 4 years, I lived in Oklahoma and Nebraska.

VO: So why did you chose UNL?
ME: The school has a very rich learning culture, and a very distinguished faculty. It also provides an opportunity for students to study families using a global mindset, where local ideas are adopted to solve global family issues and global ideas... (VO cuts off)

VO: Okay so why Nebraska? You been to Nebraska? So why there (in my mind I’m like shuo… shebi I just told this dude I stayed there)
ME: (Huge smile) Yeah I lived in North Platte during my optional training… (I stopped cos he gave me a look, and huh?) Well Nebraska is a pretty place to stay, I have interacted with persons from there, the people are nice and welcoming. It is surely more than the corn fields (another small smile).

VO: (Picks up my passport and start to flip through) Why do you have another student visa on your passport?
ME: (cannot remember exactly what I said, but it was more like) I applied to other schools, some of which were in the country and got admitted and also applied for visa which just came through (cuts in)

VO: But you wanna choose the US school?
ME: (smiles) Yeah, that is correct.

VO: (nods) Okay. So what other schools did you apply to in US?
ME: BYU, UMN, OSU and UNL (I said these all in full)

VO: (nods) How many gave you admits?
ME: UNL and OSU

VO: Your previous masters where did you do it?
ME: At the university of …….

VO: What was your major?
ME: Family life education …….

VO: I see you have been to Canada?
ME: Yes

VO: How long did you stay there?
ME: Just a couple of weeks.

VO: Where in Canada did you go?
ME: Ontario, Toronto

VO: (picks up i20 and looks through) Why did they not give you full funding? Why do you have partial funding here?
ME: (omo I did not prepare for this question) Oh, I myself was surprised, and actually called the departmental chair about that, who said they have a lot of outstanding intakes this year, and it would only be fair to ensure everyone gets some sort of funding. (V.O nodded)

VO: Okay but you seem to have a whole lot more money than your deficit why is that?(picked up i20 to show me)
ME: Oh that, (smiled) the deficit is the total funds available to me minus the funding already taken care of by the school. The whole lot of money is inclusive if funding as well as my family funds. (VO nods and start to type)

VO: So who is gonna pay this balance?
ME: My brother and his wife.

VO: (nods) Okay. Where is he?
ME: In Uk. (V.O nods)

VO: What university did your brother go? (this question shocked me)
ME: University of Benin (V.O nods and starts to type again)

VO: Do they have kids?
ME: Yes.

VO: (nods) Okay. In your first masters program who paid your tuition?
ME: (Huge smile) My mom. (V.O nods)

VO: So why is she not paying now? Why is your brother taking charge of your bills?
ME: (with another killer smile and a sweep of my hair… lol) she is a senior citizen now, and is retired.

VO: What is your duty as a GRA?
ME: (did not hear very well) sorry?

VO: You have assistantship what are your duties?
ME: Oh… I’m gonna be assisting my supervisor Prof TTTT on her research on refugee women in Kenya. She is interested in African families and so we will be working together. (VO Nods) however the details of my research and other duties will be finalized in the first week of fall.

VO: And after your program, what is the program going to do for you?
ME: First I am very passionate about families, and the growing trend of domestic and intimate partner violence in Nigeria is a cause for concern. Hence after my program I will be able to contribute to policies that can help families in Nigeria and in developing countries.

VO: Are you married?
ME: No.

VO: (nods) Okay. Your Visa is approved. Passes the white paper and my i20, and asked that I pick my passport in 3 working days.
ME: (Now smiling widely). Thank you and have a great day.

VO: You too.
ME: Smiled again at him, put my white paper and i20 in my folder, and then walked out.

Now these are some of the things that helped me:

Confidence: I was nervous… (normal reaction) but after my first 2 sentences with the VO, I relaxed and started to flow.
Collected: I did not rush, nor was I too slow in answering the VO. But I took time to think.
Background history: I did not violate any immigration rules while previously in US (so I had good background history). All my previous school bills were fully paid. I filed all my taxes as well, even this last tax season. (for those in US please do not take this for granted, and file correctly)
Travel history: My travel history in and out of US is there on my DS160… so when he asked if I have been to Canada, I told him yes… and how long I stayed. (but it is on my i94). Also I did a lot of traveling home while I was schooling there.
God Factor: Yes oooo… this is key. The scriptures say “when ye are prepared ye sha not fear”. I had all the right documents, but I was worried what if I said something out of place. P kept praying to be able to say the right things to the questions asked. And then I was prepared. cheesy and was able to say the right things.

Gratitude Corner
I want to say thank you to everyone who contributes to this thread. This is why it is still alive.

To those who proffered suggestions to questions I asked on this platform and even privately I say a very big thank you.
@Brown2green, @Time2win, @Walspring @Texrem for taking time to respond to my email and questions I asked, thanks.
And to those who did not or could not respond to my email request, I also want to say thank you cos I understand how crazy schedules can be.

@Twoods, I want to say thanks as well. Your comments on my post actually made me think more clearly… I actually wanted to send you an email, and in afterthought chose not to. Thanks for responding to my email request. I quite understand why and how you react the way you do. But again it is better to advise or give suggestions rather than put down others and trample on their hopes and aspirations.

Finally, A very special thanks to @Sharwama. See this girl, she took time to respond to me, went through my transcript, provided suggestions and even gave me a mock interview. Most importantly she allayed my worries… she kept telling me to breathe and just go do me… and do me I did. cheesy grin. Thanks mama... I stan!!!

One Last Note.
Please note this key fact... it is important to know what you are going for.... be passionate about your course of study. When you are passionate it will show in your eyes and your hands. Y
When you pick a course or school without much knowledge about it, then there is room for error or gaps in the conversation with the VO.
Best of luck to all visa hopefuls.
I don't even know if I should laugh or cry, ok I am doing both right now. Congratulations Queen, you will be an invaluable asset to your school. You owe me the outfit and shoes we talked about shaaa grin grin grin

FOR THE ONES WHO GOT DENIED
It's a beautiful Sunday, the start of a brand new week and the last day in June 2019. We had lots of visa approvals this month and reasons to be grateful. Sadly, we equally had denials and now I am concerned about the latter.
So this one's for all who got denied recently, contemplating and probably getting ready to refire, this one's for all the ones wondering why the VO didn't give them a chance to speak, to explain, this one's for all who forgot a particular document and got sent away, this one's for the ones who froze at the sight of the VO, became blank and couldn't utter meaningful sentences, this one's for all those wondering if they can make it in the next attempt, this one's for all those who have cried their eyes out and no longer have tears to shed, for the ones who have screamed so hard and have lost their voices, this one's for the ones who have been snatched by the piercing claws of depression, who have been pulled into the darkness and their lungs gasping for air that isn't forthcoming, this one's for all those wondering what exactly went wrong, this one's for the ones questioning God and wondering why He let this happen, I mean where is God when bad things like visa denials happen!
Breathe. Please, just breathe for me. I see you, I hear you and I can't imagine what you have been through especially because you have poured yourself into the entire process, but I do know these:
The fire of rejection wasn't lit to burn you, it was meant to purify and fortify you, to get rid of parts you thought you needed but never really did, to increase your hunger for greatness, to push you to do better and BE better, to question your intentions, how badly do you want this? Why do you want this?
I strongly believe that in life there are a lot of doors that are shut to us, and if we truly want in, we have to be consistently brave enough to keep knocking and be sure we are knocking the right way, the right time and on the right doors.
If you truly want this, if you are genuine, if you are truly worthy, if you believe you deserve this visa, then you really are and you really do . You will not go down without a fight, the entire universe is waiting for the manifestation of your gifts, waiting to see you rise from the ashes and give the loudest roar. This is your moment, take it. The glory of the latter shall be greater than the former.
May the force be with you!

Of course not. Go to a standard studio and ask them to take a 2×2 passport photograph of you in a WHITE background. The passport you uploaded in your DS-160 should be ideal. Please let me know if you require additional information.

My interview was short...by the black America lady

Vo - why r u going to US
Re - for my masters in information systems at mtsu

Vo - why masters
Re - this program will ... Vo cut me

Why this sch
Re - i have a GA offer and...VO cut me

I'm sorry ure not qualified.. U can always reapply
Why do I feel like I know you, why do I connect so much with your plight, why does your story seem so familiar?
So here's the thing:
You deserve to be heard, you deserve to be heard. All the persons I know that had interview in Abuja last week were denied despite the full/good funding. It's really not a location kini.
I hope this denial gives you momentum to relaunch a better version of yourself in your next interview. Just like Aaliyah, dust yourself off and try again, there's a visa approval with your name all over it, go get it.
May the force be with you!

Dearest Predstan,
the tech guy my heart beats for grin grin grin
I was hoping you would ask me what I really want.
Well, it's neither Paris nor Burundi, neither a date night in Dubai or some place really nice, I just want to be where you are.
I want to touch those gifted hands capable of programming things to existence
I want to see the spark in your eyes as you rave about robots
I want to watch you create magic with your fingers crawling all around the keyboard, deafened to the pleas of every key, commanding each to obedience.
I just want to watch you get lost in your universe, knowing no matter what happens, you will always come back to me.
I want to be your home, your starting point.
I want to know what it feels like to be multilingual without apologies.
I was thinking we could have Python on anniversaries, christen our kids Java and Fortran.
I know I am moving too fast but hey, time flies when you are with a tech guy, right?
Predstan, I just want you grin grin grin

I understand you were trying to make a joke, I get it, believe me I do. However it's a lot deeper than that.
Success is sweeter when we achieve it together. When I win and you win, it becomes a double victory and the thrill is stronger. I'd rather be in a room where a thousand winners are smiling than a room with just one happy winner.
This visa thread has taught me that it's a lot easier to receive than to give, but in order to really grow, we must give and give till giving is no longer asked of us. We could give love, compassion, counsel, soothing words, time, attention and other tangible things. When we help others, we have nothing to lose and so much more to gain.
Yes, we rise by lifting others, no it is not like yeast in puff puff, our ascension is more meaningful and glorious than that.
Thank you for coming to my TEDx talk.

Hey guys, my Visa was approved this morning at the Lagos consulate. Here is my transcript

VO:good morning
Me:good morning

VO: pass your i20 and passport
Me: *hands it over*

VO: do you have any relatives in the United States?
Me: yes, my sister

VO: where does she stay
Me: I mentioned the name of the state

VO: what does she do
Me: she's a student

VO: why did you choose to go to Mcneese
Me: Mcneese state university has an abundance of school spirit including various campus activities to choose from
I noticed she was shaking her head so I stopped talking

VO: you haven't answered my question
Me: the department of biology at Mcneese State University advances student knowledge through a wide range of opportunities to enter the work force or continue their education
She was still shaking her head, so I started shaking

VO: we know that, I need a specific reason
I got really scared so I started blabbing along the lines of "it has the technological and reseach facilities that will aid my learning"
She still continued to shake her head

VO: all schools in the United States do that, I haven't heard your reason for picking this school
Me: Mcneese gave me the highest scholarship which is why I chose to go there
Then, she nodded

VO: that is what I wanted to hear. So, who will be sponsoring your education
Me: my mom

VO: what does she do
Me: she's an accountant that works with XYZ company

VO: can I see her bank statement
Me: sure
This is where my heart was beating frantically because the money there wasn't up to the estimation of my fees but that was the best my mom could do

VO: does she have other bank accounts
Me: yes, she does

Vo: she just smiled and said "come and pick your Visa in 3 days time"
I was literally crying on the spot. I couldn't stop saying "thank you ma" because everyone who went before was denied but I didn't lose hope
So, all in all, thank you guys. This thread has been nothing but helpful to me and I hope others will benefit from this thread

I connected with your transcript and I couldn't be more happy for you my friend grin grin grin

So, they denied my Visa today in Lagos.

Don't bother asking about transcript. I'm not refiring on the course and School.

So, I figured the song here is the way to go (Funding is the New Ivy)... And I think the thing about Masters that can be done online is a thing too and Aunty/Uncle funding is becoming a no no... He didn't even ask for SOA.

So... I'm starting all over again... I wish I knew this page before I started...

Please....Sharwama, Lagosismyhome and anyone to put me thru how to go about funding... I will be glad..
I am really sorry about your denial, my heart goes out to you. I will advise you to take a couple of days/weeks off and cool off.
Then we can restrategize and target fall 2020. You would have to deeply reflect on your choice of course, if you want to proceed with that, you would have to sit for standardised tests if you haven't, and then we can target great schools that are generous with funding for your intended course.
Forgive yourself for your past mistakes, it wasn't your fault. You are wiser now, you know better now, you can right this wrong, you will rise from the ashes.
For now, just breathe my friend and breathe some more.

People of Nairaland, I am here again, pls help me

Interview date is fast approaching

Cc: @sharwama is there any progress?

VO: Good Morning, Pass me your I-20 and SEVIS receipt.
ME: Good Morning, handed over the requested docs.
VO: Why are you going to US?
ME: I am going to US for my Graduate Study in Sustainable Energy at Eastern Illinois University.
VO: How Many Universities did you apply to?
ME: 4 Universities: Eastern Illinois University, North Eastern Illinois University, Murray State University and Georgia Southern University.
VO: How many accepted you and how many rejected you.
ME: Eastern Illinois University and Murray State University accepted me, NEIU rejected me and I am awaiting decision from GSU.
VO: Why did you Choose EIU.
EIU have the largest biomass installation in USA, and it’s driven by two biomass gasifiers, the first application of this technology in Illinois and its environment. As a living laboratory, the Renewable Energy Center provide me a realistic working experience on campus. I will be opportune to enroll in CERE 5983 Sustainability Practicum, with that I will be able to job shadow with various operations related to energy production, conversion and conservation.
This center will afford me first hand opportunity to learn how energy is utilized to support the need of a community.
Aside the reasonable tuition, fees, and room and board rates, Eastern offers a textbook rental system, this will save me hundreds of dollars per semester.
VO: Any standardized test?
ME: GRE: 289 and TOEFL: 80?
V.O: What will the degree do for you?
Me: I would like to hold a managerial position at Energy Commission of Nigeria upon completion of my program, a Masters in Sustainable energy will not only qualify me for the position, This degree would give me an edge over others who might be equally interested and also equip me with the necessary skills and knowledge to fit in and work perfectly well in the energy industry.
VO: Who is paying the school bills?
ME: My dad is paying the bills.
VO: What does he do? Pass me his SOA
ME: He’s a lecturer of Law at University of Ibadan and also a business man, hands her his SOA
VO: I can see you married with Kids, why are you not going with them.
ME: My wife just got started work with XYZ bank and there’s a bond she signed with them that won’t allow her leave her duty post for two years.

VO: You can pick your visa in 3 days.
ME: Alright, have a great day.
Yes there's a lot of progress but there are things I would like to point out. I am just so tired. Come let me do mock for you so you can "hear" your responses especially "Why EIU?''. Maybe that's the only way you will understand what I have been repeating. By the time I cut you off after one or two sentences without you making complete sense, then you will understand my earlier sermons about precision and putting your best ideas first grin grin grin
Yes I am donating myself to you for mock, I can't write anymore. I am in severe pains grin grin grin
