robobo: the available for sale which carries almost 1.4b in the OCI should denote the income from proprietary trading of the stockbroking arm
however the real question here should be "would the income be shareable (dividend) at the end of the year when the income is moved to P&L? considering that the fair value reserve is already in negative.
practicing accountants in the house could help out here as i am very rustic knowledge wise on its treatment
Caveat: im VERY heavy here The OCI to me represents available for sale equities or bonds THAT HAVE NOT BEEN liquidated yet. Paper profit. If they do not liquidate at year end, it is not transferrable |

zendi: My brother, if Govt wants to bail out etisalat, they should just give Herbert and co their money, matter finished. Bank loans are not your share of the national cake. Herbert is too young to risk going down the routes of Ibru, Erastus, Adigwe and others. I used to think that foreign investors haul in their own money. Never knew they only come in to loot local banks, and then bolt when things turn awry. I also strongly endorse Herbert's no-nonsense approach. You cant villify, and even prosecute bank managers for recklessness and bad luck in lending, and then turn again and blame them for ruthlessness in risk management and loan recovery. As far as I'm concerned, etisalat investors are on their own here, no matter how "sytemically important". My tax money should never be used to bailout private sector misfortunes or, possibly, even, malfeasance. Brilliant post |

BullBearMkt: ...let's try to see if we can determine where we are in the market. Ask yourself the followings:
- The Accumulation phase usually occurs right after a steep sell off in the market. Is the market selling off now for Smart monies to accumulate? NO
- During the Mark up phase, the stock price rallies quickly and sharply. Has market rallied sharply? YES
- Finally when the stock price reaches new highs (52 week high, all time high) everyone around would be talking about the stock market. Has market reached its 52 week high? YES.
So distribution is ongoing. During this period, momentum and trends usually do not match - i.e distribution "opposite" of accumulation There is a transition period between when prices mark up and when distribution starts. You cannot accurately define how long this period is. It can go on for A YEAR!! More importantly ask yourself, are prices overvalued? |

CBN crashes the retail rate for the USDNGN to NGN360 from NGN375. Last week, we saw the black market converge closer to the official retail rate of 375 to NGN380-NGN390 level. In a surprise move this morning , the CBN has crashed the retail rate this morning to 360 from 375 last week. The black market currently remains unsettled as rates are moving quite rapidly. At the new level, the implied rate for the GBP is now NGN450. All in all, there is a lot of excitement on the ground as rates crash. With the convergence, it is very likely that users of dollars are likely to chase dollars in the black market to save them from the documented process of bidding for dollars via the banks. The question we would be asking would be whether banks are able to exhaust the allocations on a weekly basis as market dynamics have changed significantly in the last 3 weeks |
