Don't you think many of the politicians stealing a lot today perfected their skills by stealing crumbs when they were workers working their ass off? Or you think they suddenly became thieves when they got to leadership position? If you want to address a problem, address it from the roots. We can't just 'emotionally' pretend that his point is invalid. franchasofficia: Keep defending glaring nepotism by Tinubu, but remember that Tinubu will never be President forever. Criminals, kidnappers, ritualists, armed robbers all have justifiable reason whey they do the evil they do.
It seems most of you Yorubas have just lost your sense of reasoning and humanity just because Bola Tinubu became a President. No wahala, but you guys should remember how you have been supporting every unjust policies of Bola Tinubu in the name of tribe.

Frankly, that's probably his experience and in reality many of us can't honestly deny that fact. Yes, we can't solve any problem by living in denial. Too many empty heads all over the place.
Kudos and blessings to all the good women out there, and they are in millions too! Do not give up. No matter what people say, there are opportunities out there. Every single person typing on Nairaland (with less than 5,000 active posters) have had or will have a meal today no matter how small, people are contributing to the supply chain that led to those meals at different stages. There are over 200 million people in Nigeria and that same rule applies to them. Our fashion industry never stops operating, our entertainment industry never stops, online content creation never stops, transportation never stops, services/repairs/all sorts of help never stops, day care services are still available where people can afford it, construction of building never stops in Nigeria. In summary, when you still have economic activities at high pace like Nigeria, please sit down and find honest opportunities and let your integrity be your ladder to higher levels. You can't Bleep people up and expect your ventures to grow. |

Nice. Thanks for your insightful perspective on this. *What are your thoughts on the opportunities we had with high oil price circa 2010 and 2014? nairalanda1: Not exactly...though IBB had issues.
The problem was the oil price crash of 1982. BY 1984, it was clear we were running out of dollars to fund things like importing CKD FOR the assembly plants. That was when Buhari started doing things like 'subsitituion' to attempt to keep the plants running. (we would exchange some oil in return for parts for cars ....it was complicated). But oil prices continued to fall...and by 1986, we had to accept a SAP. Either that, or the economy collapsed. SAP was hard, and ulitmately we still had a lot of other issues.....but because of the lack of dollars, we ended up finding it more difficult to import CKD for the car plants.
By the early 1990's, the plants began to produce less.
Also, some of the cars were becoming outdated too. VW was phasing out the old Beetle...in the 1980's. Peugueot had better models of cars in the 1990's. BUt the thing is, the assembly plants did not have enough dollars to keep importing ckd, and to keep on manufacturing....and there wasn't enough disposable income (even when the going was good...people took loans to pay for a new car. I know my parents did, for example).
There was an attempt to improve local content, and the Ajaokuta steel complex was supposed to help us in that regard. But it was never completed, and naturally, there wasn't enough dollars to keep importing . Not like before. |

When you list all the Nigeria-based industries and manufacturers at that time then you understand why Naira crashed so badly over the years.
Peugeot Automobile of Nigeria (assembling those vehicles in Nigeria) was fully functional but gradually crumbling at the time of the subject of this thread (Exchange rate in 1984/85 was probably around N2 to $1). The real manifestation of the long-term continuous crash started a full crumble at the foundation level of our economy during IBB's romance with IMF and his structural adjustment program. Nigerian students fought hard against IBB's economic misadventures, but they stood no chance against a military dictator. By the time Abacha got to power, it was game over for Nigeria even when Naira was artificially sustained for several years at N22 to $1. |

That is exactly what is watering down most of the conversations here. The moment you make it about APC, you have politicized the issue and you would be naive and unserious to think it would go down well with those on the side of APC, and who unapologetically believe that we are facing the consequences of poor decisions of the past 30 to 60 years. Whether you agree with them or not is a totally different issue that will always destroy the main focus on any thread or conversation. To those smart enough to read between the lines, the likes of Helinues post comments targeting their antagonists on the opposite side of the political divide. This issue should be about the good of Nigerians in general, and honest conversations about our way of life and how we can work through the current adversities among the majority. People should stop policising these conversations. It is not about APC, APC is not a bloodline. They are politicians from PDP and other parties that formed a new party, and above all, they are all Nigerians mostly trained in politics on the streets of Nigeria. gaventa: Until you people stop attributing the problem of the nation to a political party you won’t have any headway. 85% of APC members were once PDP members, the same Pdp that finished Nigeria , LP members are Aggreived PDP and ApGa former members. There has never been any govt that favored Nigerians, there is no how you want to sugar coat it. It’s a battle that is meant to be between masses and elites but your hate for individuals is making you feel it’s about party. Make una continue, the politicians will keep sharing themselves into different political parties since they know you only want to VOTE OUT and not VOTE IN |

Breath deeply, stay focused, and be civil. You don't have to lose control simply because you can't have your way in an argument. You said and I quote "What you have right now is a corrupt justice system that disregards the very constitution in probably almost half of its rulings." Can you substantiate that with the last 50 or the last 20? You were emphatic about "almost half". Can you establish that by showing where you got the supporting fact? Read my post carefully one more time. Also, for the sake of fruitless armchair argument on the internet, can you provide say, the last 50 judgments of the supreme court and list the ones where they have abandoned the constitution. Please keep in mind that even in the most advanced countries, interpretation of lines of the constitution are often at variance with multiple judges. Kobojunkieee: Please stop already!↪
Again, your Supreme has numerous times sidestepped the Supreme Law of the Land when it comes to their rulings. They have abandoned the Constitution on enough occasions for that group to be considered a rogue/criminal group up there at this point. What you have right now is a corrupt justice system that disregards the very constitution in probably almost half of its rulings. |

Our reactions to technical decisions may be influenced by our cognitive biases and limitations. While the Supreme Court's decisions are bound by the Constitution, they also involve the application of legal principles and interpretations, which can be subject to varying perspectives and judgments. Kobojunkieee: Yet the current Supreme Court (with Kekere-Ekun as one of its members) was exactly what you described. The Akpabio and Lawan decision made by the same Supreme Court not long ago is another example. Of course, there are several other examples of the Supreme Court sidestepping the Constitution to mention as well. |

Supreme court is not village square with elders breaking kola and judging based on sentiments and emotion.
The legal profession is about intricate technicalities, procedural frameworks, and established norms as integral components. You could be right and still fail to prove your case in court. |
