He knew right from the begining that controling a fulani retired army General who was once an ex head of state won't be easy. Yet, he went along with buhari purely on a hatefilled agenda to stop a minority president he finds his presence utterly revolting . It is cultural chauvinism. Victory for Tinubu here is not seen from what he or his clan gets, but from what he denied others from that part of the country that he loathes to no end.
Minority president who couldn't cope with oil prices hovering above 100usd per barrel. Minority leader who thinks it is better he robs it in the face of those his people love to hate and you expect tinubu not to get closer to power with juicy opportunity presented to him. Democracy thrives on numbers bro, if Tinubu could allow someone else be VP, that explains his stance.

I've read Achebe's memoir and some other account of the civil war from different authors. One thing i can deduce is that the major players in the war all made several mistakes. If Awolowo claims that he stopped the passage of food to biafran civilians because of its hijack by soldiers, what then will he say about the Red cross plane that was shot down en route biafra?
Is Awolowo controlling the soldiers shooting planes? Even the most sophisticated of army in 21st century make one-off mistake. If we are talking of 20 planes being shot down, its a different case.

APC should also accept their defeat where one exist and not grabbing, grabbing, grabbing and always grabbing.
The people were robbed here. Stop making APC vs PDP, if PDP will win a re-run they will win it without having to rig and kill people.

socialmediaman:
You're too angry to have an objective discussion with your display of arrogance and lack of reason.

To the topic, personally I support removal of subsidy, but not by a government who cannot fight the corruption in the sector. If you remove subsidy without fighting corruption in NNPC and the ports, you end up creating artificial scarcity because importers will hoard the product so the pice can go up before they sell, and you end up plunging the nation into crisis.

On the Youwin programme, yes it's a lottery. Even with a good business plan, you could still not qualify because only 1,500 have to be selected out of 6,000 finalists. And I wasn't talking about a welfare package, 50,000 entrepreneurs can be empowered with 10million naira each, yes that's just 25% of what the government was paying subsidy cabals and nothing happened. By the way, I never supported that money being a grant, this is a support programme and the money should be in form of a repayable long term credit facility, like on a 20-year repayment plan. Any serious business entrepreneur would even want to take a Loan for his business, but since Nigerians were not getting business loans without collateral, this should be a way of giving them non-collateral interest-free credit facility for viable businesses.
The govt. can give N5,000,000 to 50,000 Businesses (N50 Billion) every year even with petrol subsidy alive. I am so sure the leakage in the subsidy per year alone exceeds N50 Billion. In my estimate 20% of the beneficiaries can pay back the whole money in 10 years. There will always be people who will sneak 'part' of the money to 'live their life'.

You get sense wella.
I won't support empathy for any mekunu on my own side. Nobody crawled to classroom before aregbe stated mercy-feeding them. What Aregbe is doing now is akin to a farmer who decides to use his scarce planting window to plant tomatoes instead of cocoa. Tomato may give short term result but cocoa will give far more superior result on a long run. What we need in this part of the word is to be overall exporters and earn from those we trade with.

I agree with you.

However, all those programs are now bad only because he has not been able to pay salaries which was a result of unexpected significant reduction in the state's allocation.
He should know better. State allocation is not guaranteed to be steady due to our reliance on oil. This is the reality of our economy and I expect Aregbe to know this and be guided from day one. All those religious based scheme of alms giving and hospitality to unproductive masses is more appropriate for states like Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, Akwa Ibom, and likes where they have enormous allocations from multiple angles.

Well, it will be unfair to say one recurrent based scheme (a social program in this case) negates some industrial projects.

It is also wrong to suggest that the "feeding project" is a bad program. We surely would not have been talking about this feeding program if there was no significant reduction in the state's allocation as the program was praised by most (if not all) in the beginning.

Osun spends N3 billion annually and not N3.4 as you stated.

As tempting as it is to wholly support canceling the program, we have to consider the other economic impact of such step. We have to think of many jobs that were created through this program especially in the agric and food sectors.

"On a weekly basis, pupils are fed with 15,000 chicken, 8,500 crates of eggs, 35 heads of cattle. “Chicken and cattle are provided by our farmers through co-operative loans from the government".

Finally @ both, it is wrong to think and suggest that the poor of our society should not be considered for some social programs as this one. Go to many developed and developing nations and you will discover that they have similar programs for their poor. The suggestion that Aregbe does not want to offend the "mekunus" is the reason he continues with the program is at best a lack of empathy for the poor. Even if your claim is correct, don't the poor deserve to be supported? All responsible countries of the world do it and it shouldn't be seen as a weird thing in ours.
It may interest you to note that at a point in time Osun was paying allowances to the underemployed too. The guy started out with many of such schemes. If he had invested same in let's say a corn flakes/custard(pap) factory that utilizes excess corn within Osun and Nigeria and it was started back then by now most of the people who are being mercy-fed or mercy-paid will be vibrant workers who will be contributing tax, forex and developement in the society now. I am sure lots of staffs employed will be able to fed a wife and two kids comfortably and the tax they pay can help subsidize their education further. These people aregbe is feeding now didn't crawl to collect their first O'meal.

Have you had a look at APC's manifesto? Is feeding some school children the only thing you saw there?

Do you mean you didn't read how they plan to revitalize some already dead industries?

Didn't you read in it how they plan to create job?

If you have not read it, check it here and take your time to read and digest it.
What happens when recurrent based schemes negate the industrial based schemes?
The fact that you have some good plans does not justify some bad plans.

It is one thing to criticise, it is another thing to show leadership. Many people criticise, including those in government at lower level. For instance, Osun is in huge financial crises, yet rather than stop the policy of feeding of school kids, they maintain it just to prove a point. That is an example of bad fiscal policy. It is no crime to take to austerity when things aren't going well.
The guy needs to stop free feeding and allowance for un productivity and do more of Omoluabi Garment Factory. He is resisting the urge to stop these religious inclined schemes like feeding. They feel it is more noble to feed people. It is sort of like giving out alms to the 'Mekunus'

You mean the APC that has constantly criticized/condemned the current budget arrangement of 80%:20% in favour of recurrent expenditure will tow the same line?

It can NEVER happen. Just wait and see how things will be done differently.
You tell me how will feeding of populace make Nigeria industrialized. When You feed people it ends there but when you create industries and allow them to thrive you feed them through employement, shelter them, and even earn taxes and forex. The APC are too desperate to impress and may end up going for a short term stomach infrastructure that will blot recurrent expenditure.

Now you're talking like a patriotic Nigerian cheesy

Can you explain what you mean by the bolded part of your post please? But forget about the social programs since they are not cast in stone.
The bolded part by Barcanista is a pointer to the fact that the APC is going to blot recurrent expenditure when they start feeding people who aren't guaranteed to be productive. Aregbe is already guilty of this in Osun state. For every one capital project(Omoluabi Garment Factory) he executes he negates it with a recurrent scheme of greater effect and magnitude(OYES or School feeding).
Politics › Re: Nigeria’s Economy Under Threat As Debts Hit N11trillion by Sibrah: 7:17am On May 07, 2015
Few painful conclusions:
We borrow with capital projects as excuse but end up paying a few hands salary with it.
We can't cope on the oil revenue and have zero plan for alternative source of income.
Majority of Nigerians are indifferent to our loopsided economy structure.
The core economic rot we are facing preceeds the Jonathan admin and is most beneficial to those who have the power to overturn it.

If jonathan couldn't cope with the dynamics of running Nigeria at $100 per barrel how is he suppose to cope when the price is almost half.
The right way to go is industrialization. Imagine if the govt gets her acts together and can effectively play oversight role for a particular sector.
