Actually I dont feel like joining the discussion, but I just have to say that there is no big deal in converting a player from his natural role to another position. A lot of players have been coverted and they are doing great compared to when they were playing their former position e.g bale. Having said that, I think morinho had no choice than to convert him because he couldn't compete with those that were playing his natural role and there was vacant position in DM (considering the fact that makelele is old and mou plays with two DM). You will remember that mikel was given a lot of red cards when he started playing the new role because of silly tackles but mou had no choice but to continue using him for the position (except if he want someone that costs about 16m in 2005 with enough wahala to continue to sit on the bench).

About being expensive compared to song, this is the first time I'm hearing a rumour about a club bidding for him since he joined chelsea 8 years ago, whereas Song has gotten a transfer.

Mikel takes ownership of the midfield when he plays the forward role. Song does not do that. Not in the same class.

Mikel is always anxious when playing for chelsea (many scenario to buttress my point). He's just getting over it now. You might not be totally wrong if you say he takes ownership when playing for SE not when playing for chelsea and he plays for SE occasionally not week in week out like chelsea. Song has little positional discipline, he cost arsenal a few goals as a result. In the DM position, mikel might not be flashy but far more effective.

In the offensive role, song is not even in the same league....

I agree that he makes mistake some times. That's bond to happen because no one is perfect just like Mikel too makes mistake (a noticeable one is against juventus in CL).

But in the attacking midfield role, the only time Mikel has anything to prove is when playing for SE and still cannot be compared to what song does in that role. Song is very fast, skilful, and can easily create chances for the attackers. In addition to that, he has goal sense. He can score with both head and with leg.

The number of defensive midfielder barca has doesn't really matter because if you study barca, you will notice that the coach hardly change players. Messi is not a natural striker but they prefer to use him for that role most times instead of sanchez, villa and the rest

Mikel is good no doubt but not as good as Song.

CORRECTION: Out of all the players above, only diara and essien play the defensive midfield role. Essein was a regular at chelsea before he had problem with injuries.
