Education / Help! We've Spent Three Years In One Semester - Aggrieved Plateau Poly Students by Sigggy: 7:06pm On Sep 21, 2021

Plateau State Polytechnic students protest the postponement of exams, saying they have spent three years for one semester. The student took to the streets on monday to protest and this has attracted the heavy presence of security operatives in Jos to ensure peace and serenity is maintained.

Deborah John, a student at the polytechnic told Siggy, "a semester is less than four months. We have spent over three years in just one semester owing to COVID-19 lockdown. But largely due to the various strikes embarked upon by our lecturers".

Msss John described the institution’s decision as an attempt to truncate their academic journey.

The armed security agents at the protest scene were said to have been deployed to forestall the breakdown of law and order.

The students trooped out en masse and blocked the Yakubu Gowon way, leading to Jos’ major highway.

The postponement of the semester exams was due to an indefinite strike by the school’s lecturers, who had issued a notice of strike to the government.

They are demanding their earned allowances and sundry issues.

“We came to school this morning to start our examinations only to see a circular that our lecturers have been on strike since Friday,” Ms John disclosed. “We were not informed. Nobody said anything to us. We just discovered that we could not start our examinations.”

The student added, “This is why we are protesting, and it is a peaceful protest because all we want is to go in and sit our examinations.”

She further lamented that “we are getting old, and by the time we graduate, we can’t find jobs because of age.”

Another student, Israel Longdu, decried the incessant strike by their lecturers.

“Nobody has come to address us on the issue, and we feel this is not right. We demand a proper explanation from the management on why we cannot start our examinations today,” Mr Longdu explained. “We are tired of this back and forth. Our academic journey is suffering, and this is not good for us.”

When the polytechnic’s spokesman, John Ramadan, was contacted on the issue, he said he would get back.

Chaos rocked the prestigious polytechnic of Ibadan, Saki Campus on Monday as students of the institutions rioted causing unrest within the school premises, Siggy reports.

According to student sources, a school security personnel allegedly beat up a student. "The security man used jazz to beat him. The guy now starting misbehaving", a student said.

Following the incidents, some students reacted to the event. They rioted and shot in the air sporadically while some other students ran helter-skelter looking for safe places to hide. A couple of security posts were also burnt during the riot.

The school management have however debunked that the student in question was on drugs and not beaten by "jazz".

For several seconds, both the father and the son focused on the board. The clip rebroadcasted by Siggy has since generated several reactions on social media.

Update from

University of Benin (UNIBEN) Students are crying out aloud on the compulsory extra N20,000 charged by the School Management on Late School Fees payment, Siggy reports.

As the students stated that how would they cope if they were unable to pay the school fees pegged at N41,400 due to the economic situation.

Although, management of UNIBEN has earlier announced that students who did not pay school fees within the stipulated time will have to pay extra charges and may likely have their studentship withdrawn.

Part of the statement signed by the school public relations officer, Dr. Benedicta Ehanire read: “registration by all students closes on 3rd September, 2021; and after such date, students will no longer have access to the school portal”.

One of the students government officer in a statement stated that the students union government, SUG will meet the school authority of the increment.

His words. “It is no longer rumour that the institution, UNIBEN has added N20,000 to the school fees charges for late payment”.

“At this point, students that are yet to pay should remain calm as the leadership of the Golden Age SUG exco (19/20) will be meeting with management on this issue. ” The SUG member advised.

Another member of SUG who craved anonymous to explained that UNIBEN action was not fair to the students.

His words: “First, they said they will add N10,000 from the 6th – 9th September. Then, the following week, that is, this Monday, September 13, they will add N20,000. But as of last week, they did not affect the additional N10, 000. So, everybody felt maybe they gave extra one week of grace. In fact, some persons were already not expecting the additional N10,000, only to see that the N20,000 has been added.

“And on the Sept 18, the portal will close, totally; thereby denying students their fundamental right to education. The SUG promised to meet the management. And I believe we will get a positive response.

A final year and self sponsoring student who pleaded anonymity expressed her dissatisfaction. She said:

“It is very wrong for the VC. They know that this country is in a mess. If we can’t pay N42,000, how can we pay N62,000 because of the N20,000 addition?

” I was among those who supported this Lilian Salami’s administration. But, after this singular act, the management has proven that education is not for the less privileged.

And that Uniben doesn’t care if the students are emotionally okay or not. what was the need for a work and pay program if they are still going to take food from the mouth of those they claim they want to help? She asked

A 200 level student, from the Department of History, who gave his name as Ayomide said :

“In this country where even the price of water has increased, a woman, a mother, a Nigerian, alongside other persons decided that students need to pay school fees fast and the best way to get them to do this is to add extra charges of almost 50% of the original amount of school charges for 200 level students. Prof. Dr Salami needs to revoke this new development, it is not welcomed. ”

Also, another student opined: ” To even get money for feeding here is like a grapple not to talk of paying an extra N20, 000 charges for late school fees payment. I’ve been available to talk with some students that work on their own to make payment. And it’s a tearful one. Many are considering suicide.

And others are considering dropping out. In fact, most are considering a lot of ‘not good to think’ wrongs just to be able to finish off and get themselves out of this school”.

Reacting to this, a 100 level student of Radiography: “With the way things are going, I’m beginning to think it was just a big hoax to prompt parents and guardians into immediate payment of fees.

I strongly believe it was unwarranted and uncalled for as parents/guardians are put under duress due to the ‘proclamation’ given by the VC.” She said.

In a leaked phone call with the Vice Chancellor, Students could be heard pleading with her on elimination of the late payment fee while she insisted on no going back. She reiterated that School wasn't compulsory and she also has a lot of people she pays school fees for.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqiHnE4XUFo

Meanwhile, the school authority stated that the extra N20,000 was for penalty fee for defaulters who could not pay the school fees on time.

In a chat with , the institution spokesman, Dr Ehanire notes that: ” The move we took is not peculiar to UNIBEN. Anywhere if one fails to meet basic requirements, the sanction is placed on them.

” So, you can call the additional N20,000 penalty fee. ” UNIBEN PRO reiterated.

Update from

Residents of Eruwa in Ibarapa East Local Government Area of Oyo State took to the streets to protest the appointment of an Acting Rector of the Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic Eruwa, Dr. Akinteye Adewuyi.

The residents also demanded the immediate dissolution of the institution’s governing council led by Dr. Samuel Ogundiran for peace to reign in the town.

But Ogundiran insisted that the decision to reappoint an acting Rector was in line with the National Board of Technical Education requirements.

The protest saw scores of residents carrying placards with various inscriptions while chanting solidarity songs.

They also made bonfire in front of the polytechnic gate purposely to prevent the entry of the newly appointed rector to the institution.

The situation paralysed academic activities as students who were supposed to start their examinations were also prevented entry to the premises of the school.

The Ogundiran-led governing council which the appointment of Adewuyi as the acting rector; Oladipo Abimbola as the acting bursar and Abegunde Olatunde as the acting head of works last Friday had also announced the dissolution of management and the appointment of a new team.

While announcing the appointment of the acting rector, Ogundiran said the former acting rector, Mr. Peter Adejumo’s tenure ended on September 10, 2021.

One of the protesters who spoke with Siggy correspondents advised Governor Seyi Makinde to immediately dissolve the governing council and reconstitute another one for peace to reign in the town.

He said the members that made up the governing council were unacceptable to the generality of people in Ibarapa.

“The new acting management is unacceptable to us. They are APC members. Where were they when we voted for Governor Seyi Makinde?

“Now they want to reap from where they did not sow. We want Governor Seyi Makinde to dissolve the entire management for peace to reign.

“Governor Makinde’s second term ambition will suffer greatly if he puts the current management team in the helms of affairs in this polytechnic. This protest will continue if the entire management is not dissolved,” he said.

But Ogundiran told the National Board of Technical Education guideline allows Council to appoint Acting Rector’s for a maximum of 12months and which was a decision taken at a general meeting of the board, which held earlier.

Ogundiran said: “I don’t want any press interview but whatever you read about the protest is what the council has done and the the council did it according to the law governing the administration of education in Polytechnics.

“Yes, the protest was to counter the Council decision but what we did is in the law. NBTE document Chapter 10, Section 10.2.2E.

“Acting capacity is a maximum 12month, six months in the first instance and another six months in the second instance. And you are conversant as a journalist with the situation in UI, the acting was firstly for six months and eligible for a renewal which is final for any institution.

“It is in the law of the National Board for Technical Education and that was the section I quoted for you earlier. The decision is a council decision at the council general meeting and it is in line with the documents guiding the conduct of affairs in Polytechnics in Nigeria.”

The Lagos State Government (LASG) has called for vigilance and adherence to safety regulations in the face of coronavirus (COVID-19) as students return to school at the end of the vacation.

Siggy reports that schools resumed on Monday while those in model colleges and upgraded schools will resume in batches due to the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The call was made in a statement signed by Mr Ganiu Lawal, Assistant Director, Public Affairs, Lagos State Ministry of Education on Monday in Lagos.

It stated that Mrs Folasade Adefisayo, Commissioner for Education, gave the charge while welcoming the students, teaching, non-teaching staff and school administrators back to school for the new academic session.

According to the statement, Adefisayo added that the adoption of a uniform academic calendar would enable proper planning; ensuring pupils and students attend school for the number of days required in a term.

She commended the concerted efforts of everyone in the education sector for the modest success recorded in the 2020/2021 session in spite of the effects of the pandemic.

“To the various award winners in the last academic session, please keep the fire burning. I encourage others to light up the fire, renew the healthy struggle for success.

“Our new students should take the orientation seriously and be determined about success from day one,” Adefisayo added.

She reiterated the need for school administrators to deploy all reasonable strategies for the protection of pupils/students and school personnel, urging the students to remain focused.

“Make your parents proud, make the teachers proud and fulfilled, make our dear state proud and at the end of the session, make yourself proud of your achievements,’’ she said.

The commissioner restated the commitment of Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration to continue the investment in education infrastructure, capacity development and welfare of school personnel.

“The Lagos education transformation agenda will be vigorously pursued to achieve the desired effect on school governance, personnel and pupils/students development in all areas of intervention,” Adefisayo explained.

She recalled that SS2 students seeking promotion into SS3 class were expected to resume on Sept. 19, the newly admitted JS1 students into model colleges and upgraded schools will resume on October 2.

She said that other returning students in JS 2, JS3, SS1 and the newly promoted SS2 in these various schools are to resume on October 9, respectively.

A lecturer at the Department of English Language Obafemi Awolowo University, Dr Adebayo Mosobalaje, has claimed that he was “wrongly” dismissed by the university management for alleged sexual assault, reveals.

In an exclusive interview with Siggy correspondent, on Wednesday, Mosobolaje faulted the Governing Council for acting contrary to the recommendations of the Joint Senate and Council Disciplinary Panel.

According to him, no student wrote a petition against him.

Remember that had reported that Mosobolaje was dismissed by OAU Governing Council after an alleged sexual demeanor against a female student.

The OAU management in a statement on Tuesday said Mosobolaje violated sections of the University’s regulation.

But the lecturer, who is one of the key players in the crisis rocking the academic staff Unions at OAU, debunked the allegations against him, noting that he would appeal the decision of the Governing Council.

How it started

gathered that the female student was admitted into OAU in 2013.

In 2017, the female student was said to have visited Mosobalaje in his office for further instructions on her final year project work when the alleged sexual assault reportedly happened.

On July 5, 2018, a petition that indicted the lecturer was sent to the university’s vice-chancellor, Eyitope Ogunbodede.

Based on the report, an investigative panel was set up by the VC and the lecturer had to resign as a member of the university’s governing council representing the convocation.

Mosobolaje denied the allegations when he appeared before the investigative panel.

Reacting to the dismissal on Wednesday, he clarified that he tendered evidence of how a member of the Centre for Gender, an organ of the University that wrote the letter of complaint, had previously threatened his job before the panel.

Mosobolaje said, “The lady in question recorded the audio in 2017 but the University started the investigation in 2018. The Centre for Gender, an organ of the University wrote the letter of complaint on behalf of the lady. So, the Centre was the complaint and members of the Centre were also invited by the University Investigative Panel as witnesses.

“I appeared once before the Investigative Panel and also once before the Joint Senate and Council Disciplinary Panel which was the trial proper.

“I have been in the department since 2006, 15 years ago – and no previous case of harassment against me. I have not also received a query at all since I started my career.”

My right was violated – Suspended Lecturer

Mosobolaje also explained that he was dismissed despite the alleged absence of evidence of sexual harassment against him.

“The decision is a violation of my fundamental rights as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and therefore a travesty of justice.

“Just an instance, the report of the Joint Senate and Council Disciplinary Panel submitted that there was no evidence of harassment in the audio being the charge against me but went ahead to find me guilty on an account that I was not charged (lecturer-student relationship) which is not included in the list of misconduct in the University Code of Conduct,” he added.

The English lecturer said the panel did not tell him the claims and evidence made against him by the said student, adding that the transcript of the conversation with the complainant on the telephone was not also made available to him.

Another complaint made was that in the report of the Joint Senate and Council Panel, the student reportedly submitted that the interaction between her and the lecturer did not affect her grades.

He said, “My accuser did not appear before the Investigative Panel.

“The Panel took evidence from her via a phone conversation. The lawyer on the Panel rejected the move as being inadmissible in law.

“The Panel did not tell me what my accuser levelled against me. The Panel did not know the accuser nor the person speaking at the other end of the call.

“More than the above. My accuser did not appear before the trial proper. So, there was no cross-examination.”
