Education / Sickle Cell Student Graduates As Best Student In Covenant University (Photo) by Sigggy: 4:21pm On Mar 09, 2022
Update from SIGGY .ng

A Nigerian sickle cell lady, named Hephzibah Adeniji, narrates how she become the best graduating student in Biological science at Covenant University (CU), with 4.96 out of 5 points, Siggy reports.

Hephzibah Adeniji shared a heart touching words after graduating with a first-class from Covenant University.

But Hephzibah’s story isn’t the regular. Having been diagnosed with sickle cell disease at an early age and losing her mother — whom she describes as her motivation — during the heat of the COVID pandemic in May 2020, graduating with a CGPA of 4.96/5 as the best student in biological sciences was an uncommon feat.

Beyond achieving the top position in her department, she was also the second best graduating student in the university.

In her words: “I came into Covenant University with the mind of a child. I have grown in wisdom in the things of God and in wisdom for everyday living. I learnt how to deal with certain situations and people with the maturity required and I couldn’t be more proud. His grace and goodness on me, I mean, how else could I maintain beauty when CU stress hit?”

Revealing how she did it, Hephzibah said “I maximise the times when I’m well, so that when I fall sick, I’m not entirely at a loss.”

She attributes her resolve to God, family, a strong support system represented through “God-sent helpers who are now family”, and a unique understanding that pain will only last a while.

Education / Policemen Arrested, Detained For Extorting N204,000 From An IAUE Student by Sigggy: 8:32pm On Mar 08, 2022
Update from SIGGY .ng

The Rivers State Police command has confirmed the arrest and detention of its operatives who illegally collected the sum of N204,000 from a 200-level student of the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE),Port Harcourt, Siggy reports.

According to the Police, the arrest of the four operatives followed an order by the State Commissioner of Police, Friday Eboka, after a rights group brought the matter to his attention.

The group, the Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign had led the student, Kingsley Dike, to the CP after the undergraduate reported the matter to the organisation.

As it happened from the side of the student story he told newsmen in Port Harcourt that he was on his way home at about 10pm last Friday in a Bolt ride when the policemen waved the car they were in to a stop along Ogbogoro-Egbelu road, near Port Harcourt.

Dike further said the operatives asked him and his colleague to alight from the vehicle, saying a thorough search was conducted on them and the vehicle before they were taken to their base in Aluu (Ikwerre Local Government Area), even though they found nothing incriminating on them.

“They took my phone, asked me to unlock it, scrolled it and asked me to on my data. They didn’t find anything. So, when we got to there (police station), we were was asked to take off our clothes which we did.

“We were thrown into the cell on the 4th of March and on the 5th of March, 2022 at exactly 8:30am, were asked to come out of the cell.

“We were asked to write a statement, while we were writing, they beat me up. The policeman that was interviewing me slapped me three times, forcing me to write that I am an internet fraudster (yahoo boy).

“They (policemen) were also beating another victim behind their office.

“With the fear in me I wrote that I was an internet fraudster. After writing the statement, he said I should bring N150,000 to bail myself.

“I told him I had no money, that the only money I had was for my school fees and it was with my mother. He said I should call my mother on the telephone and ask her to transfer the money to my account,” he stated.

Continuing, the student said, “So, I called my mum and informed her of the situation. She was shocked and started crying. She then transferred N150,000 to my account with fear.

“One Seargent Eze, who was among those that stopped our vehicle, wrote an account number and ask me to transfer the money to that account.

“Before then, a relative of the other victim they were beating was asked to pay his own money to my account so that we can pay all the money into the account that Seargent Eze brought.

“So, the victim’s relative sent the money to my account as ordered by Seargent Eze and I transferred N204,000 to the account number Eze gave to me.

“After then I was threatened and told never to mention what had happened to anyone. That I will be dealt with if I do.

“So, after paying the money I left and went home,” Dike narrated tearfully.

When contacted, the State Commissioner for Police, VP Eboka, confirmed the arrest of the operatives, saying the allegation against them was being investigated.

“There was an allegation that policemen extorted money from him. So I ordered the DC-CID (Deputy Commissioner of Police Criminal Investigation Department) to investigate.

“And those people accused have been arrested and investigation is on to ascertain the truth. So they are with the DC-CID,” Eboka stated.

Speaking on the development, a lawyer with the rights group, Charles Obiorah lauded the CP for his prompt action on the matter.

He, however, urged the police to ensure a thorough investigation into the matter and if any of the officers was found culpable, they should be arraigned in court to serve as a deterrent to others.

Education / KNUST Graduates Invent Solar Electric Cooker That Can Work For 25 Years (Photo) by Sigggy: 8:29pm On Jan 27, 2022
Update from SIGGY .ng

Martin Osei, a graduate of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), was the driving force behind the design of the Insulated Solar Electric Cooker.

In an interview, the smart young guy stated that he studied Mechanical Engineering and graduated in 2018, following which he is now pursuing his master’s degree in the United States of America.

For the past three years, we have been developing the solar cooker as a solution to the cooking needs of individuals living in Sub-Saharan Africa. Most people still rely on charcoal, which is bad for the environment, or on gas, which is expensive“, he stated.

Martin’s solar cooker has entered the first phases of manufacture in seven nations, thanks to initial financing from UK Aid. India, Ghana, Togo, Cameroon, Uganda, Sierra Leone, and South Africa are among the countries involved.

Because of its particular insulation and an unharmful chemical that retains heat, he claims that the Insulated Solar Electric Cooker can supply enough heat for families and individuals to cook their meals even after the sun goes down.

The best aspect is that, after the initial investment in the cooker, it may be used to prepare meals for roughly 25 years, which is the usual lifespan of a solar panel before an additional investment is required.

When mass manufacturing begins, the cost of each cooker is expected to be $110.

Update from SIGGY .ng

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has again indicated that if the federal government does not implement it’s Memorandum of Action, MoA, by January ending, they will likely shut down universities, Siggy reports.

Speaking with Vanguardngr in an interview, the Union’s president, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, said the union was waiting for the period of grace given to lapse before taking the necessary steps.

“As a responsible union, we are consulting widely on the issues at stake. We have an MoA that is yet to be implemented fully and we also have the renegotiation of the 2007 Agreement pending. A lot of groups and concerned individuals have stepped in to intervene in the matter.

“We are responsible unionists and citizens and we must give room to those interventions; may be they can help persuade the government to do the needful. We have given them up till the end of this January and if nothing is forthcoming, we can take the next step,” he said.

It was gathered that if the union’s demands are not met, nationwide mobilisation of members would follow and congresses held to mandate the national leadership to act appropriately.

Recall that the MoA came into being following the suspension of a nine-month strike by the union in December 2020. The issues in contention include funding for the revitalisation of the universities and the payment of Earned Academic Allowance which the government has fulfilled.
