Abia Poly Graduate Shot Dead By Police Over N50 Extortion (Photos)

A Graduate of Abia State Polytechnic, Abia State named Ugochukwu Chinyere has reportedly been killed by Police officers attached to the Aba Area Command of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) over their failure to receive N50 bribe from a motorcyclist, Siggy reports.

Ugochukwu, an indigene of Umuekwensu community in Ohuru Isimiri, Obingnwa local government area of the state is an orphan who was sponsored by his poor extended family to go to the polytechnic and become successful in life.

Ugochukwu was allegedly shot by one Yahaya led team of police officers who were at a checkpoint in front of popular Metrological complex on Obikabia-Umukalika road in Obingwa LGA.

The motorcyclist whose name was yet-to-be ascertained was shot on the leg by one of the police officers attached to the Azuka police station in Aba North LGA and is currently receiving treatment at the hospital.

Mr. Christopher Nduagu, an eyewitness to the Ohuru Isimiri shooting, while narrating the incident said, “Ugochukwu Chinyere was a passenger in a motorcycle going to Obikabia junction.

“One of the policemen at Umukalika police checkpoint stopped them to demand their usual N50, but the bike man told him that he doesn’t have the money. They had a heated argument, leading to intervention by late Chinyere.

“The police officer, who had warned Chinyere not to come close to him, fired him. He was rushed to a private hospital where he was pronounced dead".

Another eyewitness who gave his name to Siggy as Linus Alanna, narrating the Azuka Police Station shooting said that they were going to the hospital off Ikot Ekpene Expressway to visit their brother who was shot by the Ohuru Isimiri Police team when a police officer serving in the Azuka Police Station fired and injured the knee of their kinsman.

“We were going to Dominion Hospital where the injured person was receiving medical attention when police officers and the Divisional Police Officers (DPO) from the Azuka police station accosted us.”

Investigation by our correspondent has it that the second victim is receiving treatment at a private orthopedic hospital along Okigwe road in Aba North LGA.

When our correspondent visited the scene of Obikabia-Umukalika incident in Obingwa LGA, there was no presence of any police team at their usual spot in front of the Aba Metrological complex, Umukalika.

The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, SP Geoffrey Ogbonna didn’t take his calls when contacted.

Ogbonna is yet to reply text message sent to his mobile phone number by our correspondent at the time of filing the report.

A police source, who condemned the shooting of the innocent citizens, however claimed that the Azuka incident happened after the police got intelligence that the youths were coming to attack the Azuka Police Station.

Update from

A female NYSC corp member has slammed students of the University of Lagos, (UNILAG) for having ‘superiority complex.’

She stated this during a street chat with TikToker Lexie Armani, when he asked her to reveal the university she does not like.

The lady said she dislikes UNILAG because its students often think that their institution is better than every other university in Nigeria.

Her assertion was born out of her observation after meeting some graduates of UNILAG at NYSC orientation camp.

According to the corper, their pomposity is unfathomable especially as all they end up doing after graduation is to sell spaghetti.

Education / SS3 Student Of Navy Secondary School In Abeokuta Beaten By Officer (Video) by Sigggy: 9:46am On Nov 17, 2021
Update from

A video revealing when a SS3 student was seen showing his friend the injuries he sustained after he was brutalised by a naval officer at the Nigerian Navy Secondary School, Abeokuta, Ogun State is trending online.

A Facebook user, Vivian Madu, had shared the video, saying:
This inhuman and degrading treatment was meted out to an SS 3 student of Nigerian Navy Secondary School Abeokuta under the watch of a female Commandant Mrs Jecinta Uche Asetuebube by a Sub Lt Rollins Okoji. When the Commandant was first contacted she denied the video because the victims nickname is NDA but further investigation revealed that this happened sometime before the end of the last term.

https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10220728025533092&id=1310480780

But, the Nigerian Navy headquarters has reacted to the incident, telling parents “to avoid recycling these sorts of materials in order not to create tension and ill feelings.”

According to a statement by the Nigerian Navy Director of Information, Commodore Suleiman Dahun, the video had been sent to the management of the school by a parent who did not specify when the incident happened or the person involved.

Dahun, however, stated that a preliminary investigation had revealed that “the incident took place 2 sessions ago,” adding that it was handled administratively.

”For the avoidance of doubt, further investigation is ongoing on the matter,” he assured, adding that the Nigerian Navy was mindful of the need to uphold discipline in her schools without recourse to unorthodox method.

Siggy reports that the video is coming at a time the Ogun State Government is warning schools to desist from using corporal punishment to instill discipline on pupils.

Recently, the Ogun State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Professor Abayomi Arigbabu, said the State frowns at any form of punishment that inflicts injuries on students.

To correct those about above me... Igbo is not the hardest. I personally learnt fluent igbo within just a year of staying in Ibusa, Delta state.

Then I think yoruba is the easiest to learn.

Then from my personal lingual experiences, Tiv (from Benue state) should be the hardest to learn. Then Ibibio/Efik follows immediately after.

Education / NASU Threatens Nationwide Strike Over N22.1bn Earned Allowances Sharing Formula by Sigggy: 7:12am On Nov 17, 2021
Update from

The Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) have threatened to resume their previously suspended strike if the government refuses to reinstate a new sharing formula for the N22.1bn earned allowances allocated to the four unions (ASUU, NASU, SSANU & NAAT)

Recall that the Federal Government had in the sharing formula, alloted 75 percent of the N22,127 billion to the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU and the remaining 25 percent to the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, NASU, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU and the National Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT.

While the three non-teaching unions have rejected the sharing formula, NAAT has called on the government not to lump its share with any other union.

Speaking at its National Executive Council, NEC, meeting in Abuja, the President of NASU, Dr Makolo Hassan, decried the alleged injustice against the non teaching workers in the sharing formula.

He said: “The unending crisis associated with the unjustified sharing formula of the Earned Allowance in the Universities and Inter-University Centres calls to question the sincerity of this Government toward the fight against corruption.

“It is clear to us that Government officials do not give premium to issues of equity, fairness, natural justice and good conscience. Close to five years, the Non-Teaching Staff Unions in the universities and Inter-University Centres have fought relentlessly over the disproportionate sharing formula of 80/20% and 75/25% to the Academic and Non-Teaching Staff in our Universities.

“We are, therefore, using this medium to call on the President to intervene and stop the continuous sowing of seed of inequity and distrust in the system by officials of this government. We are aware of plans to share the next round of the Earned Allowance in the same manner it was done previously.

“To continue to ignore the feelings of non-teaching staff in these acts of unfair treatment, will not make the feeling go away. Rather, such attitude of government officials will continue to provoke industrial crisis in the system.

“We are making it clear that if the Federal Government decides as usual to ignore this appeal, then government would have forced us into resuming our suspended strike on this matter.”

In his remarks, the General Secretary of NASU, Prince Peters Adeyemi, linked industrial actions in the country to non-adherence to signed agreements by government.

Adeyemi lamented the non-payment of arrears of the National Minimum Wage signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.

He appealed to the federal government to honour all agreements to avoid industrial unrest in the country.

He said: “The non adherence to the MoU and MoA signed by government is at the root of crisis in our education sector.

“It is not lack of education that is responsible for industrial crisis it is lack of insincerity on the part of government functionaries that is responsible for these series of industrial actions that we are seeing from one sector to the other.

“This fire brigade approach has to be put on hold. Fire brigade approach that is lacking in transparency and honesty.

“When a union gives notice of strike it is expected that the leadership of the union should be either invited or communicated.

“Everybody must do its own part of the bidding, except that is done there will be strike everywhere.

“When MoA and MoU are signed with timeline, government should do everything possible to honour those agreements. For as long as government keeps on signing agreements just to get unions to suspend their strike, after signing the agreement you go to bed, you will have more strikes. Because you cannot expect the Trade Unions to surrender.’’

“There is a need for this government to have a change of attitude. The way the Trade Unions in this country are being treated today is unacceptable. We should be seen as partners in progress because we create the wealth of this country.”

Update from

A 16-year-old girl has on November 11 lodged a complaint with India's Child Welfare Committee (CWC) as she alleged to have been raped by 400 men in the past six months, Siggy reports.

The girl, who was homeless, said she was raped by 400 people in Beed district of Maharashtra state, according to CWC chairman, Abhay Vitthalrao Vanave.

In her complaint, the minor also named two policemen, Vanave said.

The girl was begging for money at a bus stop when she was allegedly forced into sex work by three men, Vanave said.

While the number of alleged rapists might be very hard for prosecutors to ascertain or prove, the girl could identify at least 25 alleged perpetrators, Vanave added.

The girl had attempted to file a police complaint against a man she accused of beating her up, but officers did not register it, Vanave said.

In a statement Monday, November 15, the force said it had registered cases against eight males including one minor -- pertaining to rape and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences law, which has more severe sentences of longer jail time.

They have also registered a case under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act.

The girl also told police she was married off at age 13 to a 33-year-old man who sexually abused her, according to the police statement.
She also told police she was sexually assaulted by her father, which made her to leave both homes and sleep at the bus stop.

Women's rights activist Yogita Bhayana said this was "the most tragic (rape) case in history."

"This girl was tortured every single day," she said, adding that police had failed to protect her. "We want strict action against all culprits."

According to India's National Crime Records Bureau, more than 28,000 cases of alleged rape against women were reported in 2020 -- one roughly every 18 minutes. Experts believe the real number is much higher as many go unreported out of fear.

In September this year, police arrested 33 men for the alleged gang rape of a 15-year-old girl in Maharashtra.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ilorin (Unilorin) Chapter, has voiced out in condemnation of the physical assault on one of the female lecturers of UNILORIN by a student in the institution named Salaudeen Waliyu.

Prof. Moyosore Ajao, the Chairman of the association, made the condemnation during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Ilorin.

Siggy reports that a 400 Level student of the Department of Microbiology, simply identified as Salaudeen Waliyu, aka Captain Walz, allegedly beat the lecturer to a coma.

The student was alleged to have attacked the lecturer in her office because she refused to help him over his failure to do the mandatory Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES).

Reacting to the development, Ajao said that the union would never allow “this dastardly act to go unaddressed”.

“It is not just because the lecturer is a female but because she is a human being and violence is never tolerated in ASUU, more or less in a university where character and learning are the essences of it.

“ASUU is patiently waiting on what the university management is going to do before we now apply our own action.

The ASUU chairman explained that the matter of the assault has already been reported to the law enforcement agencies.

On speculation whether the student was under the influence of drugs, Ajao observed that in every 12, there is always a Judas, adding that though the students of the institution are largely well behaved, there are bound to be uncouth elements around.

“The university must demonstrate the capacity to deal with such an act, apart from that they must ensure that such a thing never happens again.

“You can’t have a student population of over 50,000 and you expect all of them to be disciplined.

“Whether under the influence of drugs or whatever is immaterial to ASUU. If he is under the influence of drugs, he left his house, are you telling me he did not see anybody, why did he choose to attack the particular lecturer?,” Ajao asked rhetorically.

The ASUU chairman said the union would also petition the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to also look at the possibility of drug usage in the incidence of the attack.

“I expect the NDLEA to swing into action. The union will petition to say, ‘these are the people you are looking for, you have had one and we are yet to hear anything,” he added.

Ajao maintained that the union would continue to be proactive by protecting its members, adding that an injury to one is an injury to all.
