Education / Ibukunoluwa Are Withdrawn From OAU For Bad Performance, Grabs 1st Class At Bowen by Sigggy: 9:01am On Dec 01, 2021
Update from

A Nigerian lady has shared an inspiring story of how she overcame the odds before her and wrote her name in gold in the history book of Bowen University, Iwo.

The young woman identified as Ibukunoluwo Areo graduated with a first-class degree and took home a cash prize of N400k in the process.

But her story was not always rosy and blissful as she had been withdrawn from Obafemi Awolowo University in 2016 due to poor performance.

She enrolled into Bowen University after several trials and failures, and eventually graduated with several awards on her collar.

Ibukun took to social media to celebrate her academic milestone with beautiful photos from the convocation ceremony.

Taking to LinkedIn, she wrote;

When life throws lemons at you, sit still and make lemonades out of it. This sounds sweet, sharp and sleek but in reality, it's a tough battle of the mind. I've pondered endlessly on how best to put my academic journey into words...

In 2016, I was withdrawn from OAU due to poor academic performance.

In 2017, I wrote my first Cambridge A level exam, I did not fail, but my grade was not enough to gain admission.

In 2018, I wrote Cambridge exam again and passed, but didn't gain admission into University of Ibadan due to issue with subject combination.

In 2019, I resumed as a Direct entry student at Bowen University and all I wanted was to obtain first class honors and graduate, but I met people who knew better and wanted more than good grades. I was surprised and decided to follow them.

In 2020, I chose growth over mediocrity. It stretched me beyond my imagination, but I knew it was a seed sowing season.

After 3 years of building brick upon brick, I am proud to say that I graduated:

1. With a first class honors degree in Economics

2. As the Best graduating student in my Program with a CGPA of 4.84/5

3. As the Best graduating student in my College

4. As the 3rd overall best graduating student in the 2020/2021 set

In addition to my academic success, I served in various leadership capacities, the highest of which was being the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the school for 1 day.

I am eternally grateful to God for grace, strength, provision and the special gift of family, friends & people who stood by me up to this point. It's harder to place a bet on someone who has failed before.

I'm also grateful for the platforms that I served on that gave me pictures of how life looks outside the school walls. (NESA Bowen & Bowen Finance Society among others). It's not the end yet, the journey of growth continues.

My first book titled: "Get up and fight" is still in the works" Watch this space for it. I hope it inspires someone to keep fighting for what they want.

Cheers to many more years of growth.

Education / Student Kicked Out Of OAU In Final Year, Graduates With 1st Class From FUTA by Sigggy: 9:49am On Nov 30, 2021
Update from

A Nigerian man, Timilehin P. Abayomi, who was 'kicked out' of Obafemi Awolowo Univrsity (OAU) after studying for 5 years has been celebrated on social media for his academic feat graduating with 1st class honors, years later.

According to his reports, he wept and attempted suicide after his poor outing at OAU that resulted in his studentship being withdrawn but he picked himself up.

Feeling the pains of wasted years in school, the man said he had attempted suicide and was also exiled from home. But rising from his academic misfortune, Timilehin stated that he decided to return to the university in 2015 and this time, he chose the Federal University of Technology, Akure.

In a celebratory LinkedIn post, Timilehin while keeping mum on the reason for the studentship withdrawal said the news reduced him and his mother to uncontrollable tears.

OF A GRADUATE WHO HAD TO FAIL FIRST

My Mother and I held ourselves in late 2014, weeping uncontrollably after learning that I had failed in OAU after being accepted to the citadel in 2008. My studentship was withdrawn in my final semester, 5 years later, for reasons I completely accept responsibility for.

My family and I went through a tough moment of one suicide attempt, exile from home and a family meeting to decide what to do next. I remember insisting on returning to university, and it was FUTA in 2015.

Fast forward to yesterday, I received a Bachelor’s Degree in Quantity Surveying with First Class Honours from the Federal University of Technology, Akure, and placed in the top 5% of the university's graduating class.

Between these years, I've gone through extensive refinement, learned various lessons and grown as a person. Excellence, diligence and tenacity, in particular, have become my watchwords.

With these guidelines in mind;

« I co-founded Inside FUTA, a news organization that helped the institution reintroduce campus media.

« I won the prize for most distinguished first-time member of the House while representing my department at the Students' Representative Council (SRC).

« Represented the University and competed against peers in national debate, entrepreneurship and construction competitions.

As I move forward in life, I'm determined to upholding the three values of excellence, diligence and tenacity, in the hopes that they would help me achieve my ultimate objective of realizing the possibilities of media and communications in the construction industry.

Construction Cost Data Management, Construction Economics and Project Management are three areas in which I am very interested in gaining professional/academic expertise.

As I've always maintained, this isn't the best way to get a degree; nevertheless, tell anyone who has failed that "failure is not final, no matter how fatal, for he who falls shall rise again."

I owe this eventual success to God, who gave me a second chance; to my dear Mother, who never gave up; family, who believed in me again; and friends, who were always there. My deepest appreciation to three of my friends who encouraged and supported me through this phase - Adesida Thompson, Anjolaolorun Alabi, ACIM & Opeyemi Fawole

This story is that of a failure who never gave up; a story of strength and courage. If you come across this, pray that God grants me speed for the years I have lost.

Sharing photos from his graduation ceremony, Timilehin announced he graduated with a first-class in his course of study clearing numerous honours while on campus.

Education / Student Cultists Storm Federal Poly Ede, Osun State In Their Dozens (VIDEO) by Sigggy: 2:04pm On Nov 28, 2021
Update from

A video showing cult members believed to be students of the Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Osun State, demonstrating with diverse slangs and pictures in front of the school administrative building has gone viral on the internet, Siggy reports.

According to a video shared by Vanguard, the student members of the cult group dressed in yellow were seen in front of the Admin Building on campus.

The cultists both male and female students in their numbers seemed to be bold and daring of their actions as they yelled “Alora in yellow.”

Reports had stated a few days back that the polytechnic was no longer safe for students and members of staff as cultists had almost outnumbered students.

Some students and residents of Ede who spoke under the condition of anonymity expressed concerns that the management was toying with their lives.

“Federal Polytechnic Ede is no longer safe for students; the management was aware of the cultist display right in front of the Administrative building and no action was taken to arrest them. Are we safe?” the student asked.

Another student, who did not want his name in print, lamented on the worsening security in the school community.

He had said, “Just imagine, robbery everywhere, thugs attacking students is getting too much, the cultists’ violence is troubling; they go around with guns.”

“I witnessed one around my hostel last week, where the cultists attacked a guy believed to be one of them. They just constitute disturbance in the community and throw stones in their colleagues’ apartment who refuse to come out. If the management remains silent, then the members of the management are involved.”

Crime / Deeper Life Pastor Arrested For Allegedly Defiling 4-year-old Pupil by Sigggy: 8:20pm On Nov 26, 2021
Update from

Afolabi Oluwole Jacob, a pastor with the Deeper Life Bible Church Ministry has appeared before Magistrate O. O. Sam-Obaleye of Court four, Otta, by the Legal Department of the Ogun State Police Command on a one-count charge of defilement of a four-year-old pupil.

It is reported that the suspect is the proprietor of the victim’s school. According to Siggy, the victim had arrived home from school on November 4, 2021, when her mother noticed a strange development of blood stains in her panties and curiously demanded to know what caused it.

The victim narrated how the suspect played with her and used his finger to deflower her in school. The distraught mother on hearing this, reported to the police and the suspect was arrested.

During interrogation, several methods were used by the police to extract facts from the minor, amongst which was a repeated presentation of photographs and physical parades of male adults before her who, at every point, pointed at the accused as responsible for the unholy act.

A medical report confirmed that the minor had been sexually assaulted. Therefore, pending an advice from the state Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) in the matter, Magistrate Sam-Obaleye ordered the remand of the accused at the Ibara Correctional Center for 60 days, adjourning the case to January 18, 2021.

A video making rounds online shows some students of Yaba College of Technology, YABATECH, Lagos given a punishment by their lecturer for making noise in his class.

The lecturer brought back a nostalgic feeling as he told them to ‘pick pin’ while in class.

Picking of pin is a punishment that is usually given in many Nigerian secondary schools, and it involves someone bending over as if they want to pick a pin with their fingers and staying in that position for hours.

The video posted on instagram by instablog9ja has drawn numerous reactions from internet users.

Education / Oduduwa University Alumni Speaks On OAU Master's Student Death by Sigggy: 10:01am On Nov 22, 2021
Update from

The Oduduwa University Alumni Association has appealed to the public and media to stop discrediting the school over the death of OAU Masters student, Mr Timothy Adegoke.

The remains of Timothy Adegoke who was declared missing on the 7th of November, 2021 was found near Hilton Hotel and details around his death have been fishy.

He went to town to sit for an exam at the OAU Distance Learning Centre, Moro campus, and lodged in the hotel owned by Chief Ramon Adedoyin who is also the founder of Oduduwa University.

The police on the 15th of November, 2021 arrested the manager and owner of the hotel in connection to the incident.

But President, Oduduwa University Alumni Association, Quadri Olatunji, in a press statement on Saturday, noted that the university should not be linked to Adegoke’s death since the incident did not happen on Oduduwa University ground.

While sympathizing with the family of the victim, the association called for a thorough investigation into Adegoke’s disappearance and death, noting that “Mr Adegoke, like every human being, had a right to live and did not deserve to die in his prime.”

The association has condemned news reports linking and discrediting Oduduwa University over the incident.

“Our higher citadel of learning which has produced highly placed youths in the society in just 12 years of her existence has no affiliation whatsoever in the unfolding story and as such it became a surprise as to why peddlers of substandard news would drag the name of the university into the mix.

“There is no justification in the actions of these half-baked media outfits who normally should know the intended and unintended consequences such mudslinging act would have on old, current, and new students of OUI, yet attempted tarnishing the image of the school for monetary gains. This act should stop at this stage, Hilton hotels is not Oduduwa University.

“It is entirely unfair to discredit the institution over something unconnected to it. Private institutions are not cheap in Nigeria; hence one can guess what a lot of parents and students (old and new) must have gone through to pay tuition and all.

“We, therefore, implore well-thinking Nigerians to be mindful of our stand on this case as an Alumni body. Oduduwa University is one of the most peaceful private schools in Nigeria with zero rates of unrest or obnoxious incidents. The school has never recorded any form of interruption to its academic calendar except of course during the COVID-19 lockdown.

“The students and alumni of Oduduwa University should not have to go through this avoidable emotional trauma. The public should please refrain from unmindfully linking the institution to any disreputable act,” the statement reads in part."
