CareerRe: Injustice In My Workplace; Should I Return The Money? by simiolu1(m): 12:27pm On Mar 03, 2018
bilulu:
Good morning all,

I work as a third party in an organization (firm A employed me to work for firm B). After the interview by firm A I was posted to firm B to work and I was told by firm A how much my salary is. I was happy that I have gotten a place to always resume at though the salary wasn't much.

After working in firm B for about 4 months I realised that firm A have been under paying me to the tune of almost 20,000 per month. I was short and my morale went down. I discussed it with one of the workers in firm A and he said I should wait for a perfect time to bring it to the notice of firm B.

It continued till I got that perfect time and it was about 8 months later. the moment I brought it to their notice (firm B) the manager was furious and called the manager of firm A that they must pay me back all my arrears and also with immediate effect place me on the salary on the contract.

To cut the story short, they placed me on the salary scale of the contract and they have also paid the arrears completely.

The moment I got the alert the manager of firm A called me to come over. I got their and he was telling me how the management have agreed that I should return part of the money with plenty stories. I told him I will get back to him if to return it or not.

I am so confused on what to do. If I decide to report to the manager of firm B they might decide to cancel the contract with firm A and everybody will go home. But the manager of firm B might decide to absorb me in the next contract because of the relationship I built with him overtime.

Still viewing from this other side of firm A, if I don't return the money they might decide to sack me and give nonexisting reasons though it will still jeopardise the contract.

Please I need your advice on what to do...... should I return the money or I should keep it and report to firm B on the plans of firm A?

Nairalanders pls help.....
Bros, talk to a lawyer ASAP!

Do not return the money, it is yours. If they fire you because of a flimsy excuse, take your case to the Industrial Court. Your case would be heard sharp sharp. Do not fret!!!!

You welcome Ma. While at it, it wouldn't be a bad idea to buy Lamb's Tales from Shakespeare, Brighter Grammar, Charles Dickens, etc. If you are Yoruba, D.O. Fagunwa's books are highly recommended. Don't know of any Igbo or Hausa famous authors that write all their novels in their native tongue.

I'm not a female or mother but I guess my answer should be welcome.

The summary of it is that you have to teach! When I was young (over 5 years), my dad would buy writing books for us and it helped a lot. Sogo buy them writing books (loads of them) and ask the child to practice, practice and practice some more.

Then different children have different character traits! Some are always in a hurry (typical me), some are very meticulous (my elder brother). I guess you can tell who has the better handwriting. So study your child too.

If the child just started using pens instead of pencil, it'll take some time to adjust and his or her books will be soiled often (happened a lot to me).

You women dey try... Cheers!!!!

If we can do some time travel back (like 10 years), we would see that IT has evolved the way things are done and when you decide to risk doing it forward, you are not even sure if you will still have your job in the next 10 years. i was shocked when i watched a robot that can open doors on linkedin video. One can't just sit on the fence when it comes to IT. IT has come to disrupt things. Do you know AI experts have joined the league of highest paid people? They are paid to design machines that will replace human beings in the offices and human beings are not bothered.

IT has been opening up job opportunities. With this new GDPR in EURO zone which is taking effect in May 2018. All companies that operate within that zone or handle data of EU citizens must comply or pay fine of 4% of their worldwide revenue or 20million euro whichever is higher. This has just created job for 28,000 Chief Data Officers so you can imagine if one was already available in the market with such skills. Canadian companies operating in the Euro zone would have need to employ CDOs to take care of their data. Even the regulatory body would also need subject matter experts that would test compliance of organisations with the new regulation.

Like you said a lot of them dont require coding or scripting. Some are compliance, risk management or even governance related. Don't be too scared to cross over to IT because it is not rocket science. some will employ you to just be doing research and poll (likes of GARTNER) Just make a decision on which area of IT that interests you and go for it. I read the Bio of a lady that wrote an article in our ISACA journal and found out she is a wounded veteran who could not continue her service and then switched to IT. Now she is an authority in IT security. In the US, they train these veterans free of charge in the area of IT Security and absorb them to work for government. (You know Russians are giving US sleepless nights in the area of hacking) I have also seen a lot of auditors who switch to IT audit and from there to IT security and IT risk.

Good enough in this part of the clime nobody is bothered about your age when it comes to education/personal development. Your starting point could be joining an IT professional body and attending their seminars, webinars, conferences etc. I believe that will grow your knowledge base.
Please do not let us turn this thread to an IT thread... Anyone that has questions on IT should ask. I am not planning to immigrate to Canny Land (at least not yet) so please do not ask me any Canny related question.

I will try address the bolded.

1. https://www.economist.com/news/business/21695908-silicon-valley-fights-talent-universities-struggle-hold-their. The article was published 2016 and you can't argue with it. Anyone that is alarmed by what is going on with salaries of AI experts should please read it.

2. The US has a habit of offering veterans jobs, training etc to help them reintegrate into the family and society. Schlumberger has career paths for veterans alone! For the doubting Thomases that want to confirm, please visit https://careers.slb.com/experiencedprofessionals/military.aspx And I have seen this with a lot of US companies...

3. In Canada, this may work out; in Nigeria, its DOA. Nigerians set up bodies to protect their interests and to expand their monopolistic tendencies so "bodies" in Nigeria are not very interesting for people who are just curious. So instead, I would suggest people should visit Evenbrite, Meetup etc and look for events that pique their interest.

Thanks for the great insight, Simiolu.

At bolded, could you please mention a few of them? Thank you! smiley
Below are roles in IT that combine disciplines from different fields. There are

a. Project managers
b. Product managers
c. Community managers
d. UX/UI designers
e. Human resource (abi IT companies no dey recruit?)
f. Sales
g. Marketing
h. Finance
h. Legal (especially intellectual property)
i. PR
j. Business development (Nigerian companies have so much bastardised this term that a lot of people now associate it with marketing! It is not!!!)

But looking at core IT

i. System administrator (PC and Servers)
ii. Software QA tester (manual testers do not require coding experience but automation testers do)
iii. Data analyst
iv. SEO specialist
v. Support (support is quite large so I'm lumping them together. For instance, Amazon Web Services has over 19 core products grouped by functionality [https://aws.amazon.com/products/] with each having its own support team. I know because I use AWS)

There are other fields but I can't possibly list them all. I am attaching links so that you can see the kinds of roles tech companies currently have vacancies for. These may not be Canadian companies but by going through their current job openings, you can have a general idea of how large IT really is.

Cheers!!!

maziude:
Hello bosses,
I have been meaning to post this for some time now.

The IT Field...

It is no news that the IT sector is now linked to every other sector we have now. This has led to expansion in almost every field in order to accommodate the emergence of technology. This brings me to my point.

For those who would want to make a switch to IT, you can do so without being a full blown computer scientist etc.
Look inward, there is a particular area in your field that you can apply to IT and Vice versa.

For example:

A medical doctor can add medical informatics to his or her expertise. Go to some class, study medical imaging, bioinformatics etc, understand their workings. In the end you have 2 fields that offer endless possibilities.

A mathematician or statistician... can add data science, machine learning, deep learning, big data analytics, computational nueroscience, remote sensing, wireless sensor networks etc to your area of expertise...

An accountant... in addition to your CPA, ACCA,ICAN, APC(pun intended), you can add business informatics, financial engineering to your expertise; these are some IT courses linked to accounting.

An economist can go for classes on econometrics, statistical machine learning, business intelligence, economic data analysis...

There are so many more like that.

All I am saying is, you do not need to do a full blown switch at first, look inwards there is something that links your field to IT. Find it, I get why.

Take maziude as an example...
Bsc Mathematics
Msc Computer science (focus: big data, pattern recognition and Internet of things)
PhD Computer science in progress (focus: deep learning on Digital healthcare and community health)

The common denominator in all these is mathematics. Maziude does not code always, all he does is apply mathematics to computer science.

Always strive to use what you have to get to where you want to be.
....
Peace

Disclaimer:
It wont be easy at first but with focus, hardwork, determination and prayer all will fall into place...
The thing with IT is it's quite very wide and a lot of people do not know where to start from. A lot of people visit Google looking for information about the IT industry and end up being more confused than before. It happened to me.

So, I think the starting point for most people is to look for that point where their current job or something they would like to do in the future intersects with IT. That way, it is easily relatable and narrowed down. For example, someone interested in programming should first ask the language used to write that HR software they use at work; someone interested in the web should ask the languages used to develop websites. Someone interested in networking should ask himself or herself who the leading manufacturers of routers are before taking any classes.

Another misconception a lot of people have is that IT all about programming. This is not true as there are many jobs in the IT industry that do not involve writing a single line of code.

Hi Fusion,

Please elaborate further on the bolded. Some of us are equally looking at switching careers and tow similar path by seeking a new career in IT.
I have been a silent reader here for so long (over 5 months now) and I think this particular question went unanswered.

A VM is a Virtual Machine; think of it as a container that can house another Operating System on your computer that is independent of the host (your computer). The host provides storage (disk space), processor power, ram and hardware access to the Virtual Machine. So if you have a system with 4GB ram, you can assign 1GB ram to the VM comfortably. Hardware access enables you to use tools like flash drives, webcam, external mice, keyboard, modems, wireless, Bluetooth etc.

There are many makers of VM software: VMWare, Oracle VirtualBox, Parallels etc. But I prefer Virtual Box because it is not as heavy as VMWare and it is Open Source (free).

Why would you want to install a VM?

Say your computer is running Windows 7 or Win 10 Pro, and you're studying for LPIC (Linux Professional Institute Certification). You will need to install a Linux Operating System (popularly called Distro) so that you will be able to administer the OS and work on the famous Linux command line. You can decide to do this in three ways

a. Buy a new computer and install the Linix distro on it.

b. Install the Linux distro on your machine the normal way. This would add a prompt to your boot screen everytime you boot your machine asking you which Operating System you want to boot (this one na long thing).

c. Install a virtualization software and install the Linux distro in it.

So with virtualization, you can install multiple Operating systems on your computer.

The above is just one use case out of many.

I am a developer (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Php, Laravel) and web developers use VMs a lot because you want your local development environment to closely resemble the server environment in which your web project will be hosted. So we install VMs to simulate the server environment and test the software in that environment before deployment.

I hope my explanation makes some sense... N.B: I am still waiting to see a software developer on this thread. Abi Nigerian software developers are not migrating to Canny Land?

To all the Ogas in the house, keep shining

Mr Oga, I know him very well.

To debunk your lies, kindly note that

1. Tobi and members of his family are highly cerebral, evidently his elder brother Femi graduated as the best graduating student of his year. His other sibling including him graduated with 2.1 from same Unilag. He has passed his CFA Level one exams and presently enrolled for level 2.

2. Femi is his elder brother and he is only 24 years old and the age difference between them his 1 year. That makes Tobi a 23 year old guy

IF you need more info I can get it for you. But please always spread the right rumours.
Ikennali01:
OP!! OP!! OP!! Please oh with your investigation. Femi is older than Tobi, Femi was born in 1993 and Tobi was born in 1994. Tobi is currently 23 and will be 24 sometime this year. Please get your facts right before you ruin things for someone because you wanna prove your abilities.
I still had a chat with Femi yesterday night; the only reason people think he is the younger one is that he is gentler. Also, Tobi graduated before Femi because while Tobi studied a 4-year course, Femi studied a 5-year course. If he blew his trumpet the way Tobi does, we all would know him.

How many people here know that Femi is the CEO of KraksTV? How many people here know he has an MSc. from a very reputable institution in the UK? But because the guy is so low key, bloggers have resorted to calling him the younger one! He even joked that now that Tobi is in BBN, he don cast.

For those who would like to check him out, follow the link below. I do not doubt Tobi's age in any form because I have in fact seen Femi's D.O.B on a number of occasions. But trust bloggers and fake news...

I can say for a fact that Femi is, in fact, Tobi's elder brother. Reason y'all think Tobi is the elder is because he graduated first. And he did because they both got into Unilag the same year; Femi studied Electrical Eng (5-year course) while Tobi studied a 4-year course.

But because Femi is a very low-key person despite all his achievements, people think he is the junior. Smh for bloggers

Well, I did an internship with a multi national telecoms coy back in the day and the experience was the bomb!

Do you know how it feels working with smart, brilliant people? That's what you get at most if not all multi nationals. The trainings, the events, the places you go, the people you meet and the technologies you learn.

I don't know the track you were selected for but I want to guess that it's not IT related. If it was, you wouldn't be here asking this question.

If you are still in doubt of that internship, please, advertise it on Nairaland and see how.many people would want to snatch it.

I've driven all 3and none of the other two combines, luxury, performance and aesthetics like Benz. Benz knows how to find a balance in between all that. Audi is to bland on aesthetic and Interior, only selling point right now is their Quatro, BMW mostly is on the performance side and forget consumers sometimes wanna feel cocooned, too low profile for Naija roads. I see they started changing that their boring yellow backlight.
What you failed to consider is that most auto makers try to satisfy consumers with some basic criteria on a scale of preference ish. For a Benz, luxury first. For a BMW, driving dynamics first.

And this scale.of.preference trickles down into all the products they make. So auto heads will tell you anytime anyday that you buy a Merc for the luxury and a BMW for its.driving thrill.

That's one of the reasons why BMW will always be second to Benz in luxury and that's also why AMGs will always be second to M series in driving dynamics and handling.

So when they say you ride a Merc and drive a BMW, that's what they essentially mean. It's just the way it is bro

please which site Can one learn these courses
.I did some financial courses online in Australia open university and I want to learn more ESP on programming
There are loads of places you can learn from online. Especially if you are on a budget and can't afford to splash a lot but you have to also be on the lookout for opportunities. There are websites that offer MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) in partnership with various Institutions and Corporate organizations. Such websites include Coursera, Edx etc.

Then I would also suggest that you follow people who are experts in the fields you want to learn from on Twitter. Believe me, opportunities pop up when you least expect. For instance Wes Bos today announced that his CSS Grids course is ready for free. The cost of the course was covered by Mozilla Foundation (makers of Mozilla browser). If I don't follow him on Twitter, I might never know.

Also, Andela through its Andela Learning Community (ALC) has been training people for free remotely with the help of some of their partners. I was part of the ALC 1.0 where I learned android development. A certificate by Google in partnership with Udacity was issued to all graduates of this programme. Now, I'm part of ALC 2.0 learning front-end development. The front-end development program is in partnership with Microsoft and Edx. In the next 4 months, if I complete the course, I will be getting a certificate backed by Microsoft.

In conclusion, Udacity and Udemy also have free courses. You should also check out Microsoft Virtual Academy! Then I suggest you monitor those folks at LinkedIn. LinkedIn acquired Lynda.com before they were acquired by Microsoft and they steadily give out courses for free. In fact, in a particular month of the year, LinkedIn has a free learning week that they offer a large number of the courses on Lynda.com for free!

Bless up!!!!

Edit

Quite a number of people have sent me PMs all asking the same question: How do I get started?

The answer is quite simple really,

a. Google any of the websites I and others have mentioned
b. Register on the ones you choose
c. Search for their free courses that interest you
d. Enrol for the course
e. Start the course
d. Finish the course

It's not rocket science!!!

However, if you are undecided about which programming language to learn, the career path for that language or any other questions strictly related to programming, then shoot me a PM.

Thank you

Case 1: You didn't inform your wife of your friend's visit or you did and she kicked against it.

I just have to ask; did you inform your wife before your friend and his wife showed up at your doorstep?

I know this may sound unreasonable, but I don't think you informed your wife of your friend's visit early enough. Or you informed her and she kicked against it but you went ahead and still accommodated your guests.

And to top it off, you gave a guest she didn't welcome the permission to enter "her" kitchen to cook! Damn!

If my hunches are true, then your wife is just being territorial. First you need to talk to her that you didn't mean to offend her by bringing guests to the house without her knowledge/consent. Then have her apologize to the couple for her behavior.

I know the chauvinists here would scream blue murder! How dare he apologise for bringing visitors into "his" house!!! Bros, they won't be there when your wife is making the house a living hell for you o.

Case 2: Me and my husband; no friends, visitors or relatives allowed.

But if this is a case of her not wanting friends and family to visit, then you have your job cut out for you by making her understand that people and relationships are greater than money.

In the meantime, your wife has already embarrassed your guests and I don't think your friend's wife would allow them stay in that house till the period they originally planned.

NaHiim:
I'm an android application developer.
I can design web pages(html and css). I also code in java and python.
I can repair computers(or anything electronics) and I'm also good with the keyboard.
I am a Computer Engineering student of University of Ilorin.
My name is Nahiim Adebisi.
I'm looking for tech-related internship at Ilorin just to get real-world industry experience.
If you can truly do what you have written, then jobs should be sewrching for you (no offense). Go to Twitter and tweet your abilities. While at it, mention people like @colab, @markessien @neoighodaro @unicodeveloper.

If you really want to go all out, visit radar.techcabal.com, register and create a topic. You'd definitely get responses. Thank me later
ProgrammingRe: Please What Is The Important Of Php Laraval by simiolu1(m): 9:41pm On Dec 19, 2017
Aside from structure, frameworks give you some things for free... With the right commands and config settings, a lot of things are handled for you.

Example; php artisan make:auth command in laravel will generate boilerplate code for user authentication for you. this includes, registration, login, password reset, login throttling etc. Building ones user authentication from scratch is a big project on its own but with just one command, you have the basics in laravel.

Another one I love is error handling. You see, what happens when someone visits a link in your app that does not exist? Or your server responds with a 500 error? These are handled by laravel for you automatically. If you want total control over how those pages are displayed and for which errors, you're welcome to extend it.

And when it comes to building web services, your back is covered too!

So frameworks offer a lot... Most people don't even scraethe surface with their projects.
CelebritiesRe: Boy Who Photobombed Traditional Wedding Photo Has Been Found by simiolu1(m): 3:12pm On Dec 19, 2017
CaptainFM1:
So the photographer must be standing at almost twice the distance of the boy and the people. The camera focus is on the boy and not the people. The whole thing looks "planned" Like a perfect arrangement...maybe by the photographer.
Anyway, like someone said...why not just delete the picture and take another one. No be only photobombed, na photocrash!
Broa, I know who took that original photograph. As in, I know him physically. Not some social media something. And he has been a photographer since he was a child because both his parents were photographers.

Funny thing is, he posted that photo on Facebook in November; almost a month ago. And according to him, the boy jumped into his frame, and he couldn't allow his lovely pose waste. All it took was the click of the shutter.

What makes me happy in all these is that the photographer was not the one pushing publicity for the little boy. In fact, his original Facebook post got only a handful of likes.

So please, don't claim it is a planned something

Christianity EtcRe: Bishop David Oyedepo Speaks On Tithing At Shiloh 2017 (Video) by simiolu1(m): 4:09am On Dec 10, 2017
sobmos:
The world needs to read on a certain man named RANDI JAMES. A man who opened a 1million dollars trust fund, to give to any pastor, prophet, medium, or person that can perform a miracle in front of educated and learned scientists.

Can you believe that since 1964, No pastor or prophet has been able to come forward to claim the prize, because all of the prophets that has come forward were all debunked and caught in their lies.

Religion as a whole is biggest scam ever. Don’t misunderstand me. God is very real. But the issue is that, con artists came up with a plan to twist and turn the God’s words to their benefits and gain.

Think about it, some pastors are for Tithing and some are against it. So, God’s words is debatable now abi? Who’s telling the truth now? The pastors that are for tithing or those against? Na wa o.
Bros, please where do you read your news from? Read this Wikipedia link and show me where Pastors were mentioned as the target for those who can apply.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Million_Dollar_Paranormal_Challenge

When did parapsychologists, magicians, etc become Pastors and Prophets? Or did you not read the criteria to apply? If you're too lazy to click the link to find out the criteria for applicants, let me paste it here for you.

On March 8, 2011, the JREF announced that qualifications were being altered to open the challenge to more applicants. Whereas applicants were previously required to submit press clippings and a letter from an academic institution to qualify, the new rules now require applicants to present either press clippings, a letter from an academic institution, or a public video demonstrating their ability. The JREF explained that these new rules would give people without media or academic documentation a way to be considered for testing, and would allow the JREF to use online video and social media to reach a wider audience.

You guys would just read something somewhere and in a rush to prove how knowledgeable you are, you begin to twist facts to suit your narrative all for cheap likes on Nairaland, Facebook and Twitter.
