MightyFortress: Yes, there is hope; every expert in a field was once a beginner. You just have a lot of ground to cover. The most important question is what would be best for you to learn that would keep you coming back? Believe me, there would be days you would want to stop; there would be days you will be frustrated. But when you are learning something that keeps you coming back; you would actually come back. You won't be able to say no to it. It will consume you; it will take over your thoughts, your emotions, it will practically be your life. ICT is big; the tech industry is huge. Apart from programmers, the industry needs a lot of people. Even programming is huge; there are so many languages: Php, SQL, Java, Go, Python, Ruby, C, C++, C# (pronounced C sharp), Android, Kotlin, Swift etc. But the industry also needs designers: user interaction/user experience (UI/UX), project managers, database administrators, cloud infrastructure engineers, sales, marketing, finance, human resource etc. My point: carry out an extensive research; go to meetups, meet people in the industry; ask them what they do. If it sounds interesting, google it. If it looks like something you want to spend the next 6 months learning, commit to it. If not, continue your research. Because eventually, when you find that something that ticks all the boxes, the only regret you are going to have is not starting earlier. 6 Likes 1 Share |

vivalavida: The problem with a lot of training programs in this country is that students are not given proper orientation. That is why I like foreign training programs. Before you start a course, you should be told the things you must know, the things you should know and the things that are nice to know. For instance, if you have no knowledge of what a database is and what database management systems are, you have no business learning Oracle. You should be well grounded in the principles of databases, database design and implementation first before learning about a specific database engine. Oracle is a database software by Oracle. It is usually used by enterprise companies because it comes with a hefty price tag. The reason it is not so common is that there are Open Source (free) alternatives that would do the job quite well. Some include MySQL, MongoDB, PostgreSQL etc. If you had the fundamental knowledge of databases, learning a new software to manage a database or a new database engine would be a walk in the park. For instance, I use MySQL engine for programming. To manage the engine, I have about four software installed on my laptop: PhpMyAdmin, HeidiSQL, DBForgeStudio and MySQL Workbench. They all do practically the same thing but have their use cases. One engine; four softwares. So my brother; go learn about databases; know how to design a database schema from the ground up. Learn about relationships between data entities and how they can be modelled; learn about normalization and optimization. When you know all these; then go relearn Oracle, MySQL, SQL; NoSQL and learn how to write queries! 6 Likes 2 Shares |

Sammiejokes: Before going anywhere to learn about databases, try a Google search for Microsoft Virtual Academy or MTA database fundamentals. You would definitely get one or two introductory courses to databases by Microsoft for free. Oracle is a proprietary software. So you need to learn about DBMS before learning the specific engines like MySQL, PostgresSQL, MongoDB, Oracle, SQL or even NoSQL If you can, download this book: Database Design, Implementation and Management. It is like the Bible of database professionals 2 Likes 1 Share |

Family / Re: What Ailment(s) Can Discourage You From Marrying A Partner? by simiolu1(m): 4:06am On Sep 11, 2017 |
Marxxx: I think I might just disappoint you by making this short Marxxx: 1. I am doing just fine. My last episode was over 2 years ago. I guess the pains just upped and left. I'm a Christian so allow me to call it a miracle because I can't really say the particular thing I did to make the episodes stop. People ask me and when I tell them, they give me this "yeah right" look because they feel I don't want to let them in on the "secret". But what I have realised over time is that my bones do not like cold weather. So now, I am very mindful of the environment I sleep in or spend a substantial amount of time in. Then I also watch out for warning signs my bones give when they are about to fail me. There is this mild vibration I experience in my bones anytime an episode is knocking. Once I notice it, I try my possible best to make sure that particular bone remains in a rested position for a long period of time and I also make sure I don't perform some Jackie Chan moves during that time. I once experienced this mild vibration; ignored it and went playing football. I spent the next 3 days writhing in pains in my room. 2. Nope. 3. This was the hardest. I remember an episode in which my spine was aching. Sent a friend to get me drugs. I thought he bought 50mg Ibruprofen and another pain killer athletes use. I popped 2 Ibruprofen + the other pain killer immediately. Popped another combo at night then another the following morning. By noon; the pains were gone. A friend came visiting and tapped my legs thinking that was where the pain was coming from; only for me to notice that I could not feel them. A quick body rub revealed that I could not feel anything at all. I called my neighbour, a Medical Lab Science student and told him what was happening. He picked up the drugs only to tell me that I had consumed over 400 grams of pain killers in less than 24 hours. After that, I needed no prophet to tell me that overdose is real. And when the ulcer kicked in too; I knew I just had to adhere to the Doctor's or Pharmacist prescription. 4. In my short lifetime, I have carried burdens few can imagine which have "toughened me". My childhood was not a traumatic one too. Bottom line: I hate pity with passion. So I have never allowed anyone express it to me more than once. You can feel it, but once you express it the first time; I tell you straight up not to express it again. Pity is not allowed! A girlfriend can dote on me, care for me, behave like my mum, sister, next of kin and do every other thing girlfriends do. But pity; over my dead body! 5. Nope. I have had girlfriends after the girl I wrote about but I'm presently single. And my marital or relationship status is the result of a lot of things, but it is not related to any health challenge. No two relationships are the same. As people grow older, they tend to grow wiser too. Also, no two people are the same. So as a general rule, I don't compare between people. I know the relationships that were good and those that were bad. I do not regret any because they have all taught me valuable lessons. Some of my ex-girlfriends are still close to me too. One called me two days ago and bluntly asked when I was going to get married. She even jokingly told me that if we were still dating, I would have officially brought my family for our introduction. But seriously, I need to start searching... Modified 6. It was. But the odd thing was that I always had money to take of myself whenever crisis struck. I used to joke with my friends that it seemed the episodes knew my financial status before showing up. Now I hope you know that cost is relative. What is costly to Mr. A might be cheap to Mr. B. Guess what I'm trying to say is that it was expensive for me as a student. 7. I've battled depression once in my lifetime but it was not related to health issues. I usually talk myself out of depression. Its too expensive; I can't afford it. Hope I answered your questions satisfactorily? Do take care of yourself. |

olujastro: It's fixed. Australia used to be at the receiving end of that rule and most times lost their qualification of the world cup to South American countries who always found ways to beat them in the playoffs. I think 8 years ago, Australia became wise and petitioned FIFA to allow them play their world cup qualifying matches against Asian countries. Since then, Australia has been qualifying for the world cups at the expense of some Asian countries and even won the AFC Asian Cup in 2015. https://sports.stackexchange.com/questions/16254/why-does-the-australian-soccer-team-compete-in-the-asian-qualifiers-for-the-worl 1 Like |

5DMindset: I don't usually comment on sensitive issues like this but I have to ask you; what is your definition of Biafra? The reason I asked is because of the bolded. Last time I checked, the South East is a landlocked region and landlocked regions cannot have sea ports because there is no sea to build the ports for. I thought that is simple logical reasoning. If your definition of Biafra is the South East, then you guys can never have sea ports. But if your definition of Biafra includes the South South, then we both know there is a Port in Port Harcourt. You can see the attached map to verify And please let's be sincere with ourselves; every region of the country suffers from the fate of bad roads, unstable power supply, bad health care etc. If your definition of marginalization is the lack of those things; then we are all marginalized in this country.

Education / Re: Nigerian Lady With Masters In Law From A UK University Offered N35k As Salary by simiolu1(m): 10:02pm On Jul 15, 2017 |
Gerrard59: Back when I was thinking about continuing my study abroad, I realized that the UK was really really really a bad market. After the top schools (which are damn expensive), other schools command next to nothing except the person in his or herself is a very intelligent and bright person. So I concluded that Germany, Netherlands, Finland and Norway were better options if I really wanted to study in Europe. The schools are cheap and they have very very good ones too. One also has the opportunity to learn a second language. And then the immigration laws are much better. Case in point. I have a friend. First Class Engineering degree from Nigeria. Went to the University of Manchester (no scholarship) for M.Eng. Another first class result. Dude came back home and continued his social media management business which he started before he had travelled. I had to ask him if it would not have been better if the money spent for his M.Eng. was used to set up a business for him since that was what he wanted all along. Truth is, some people go for Masters just because they have folks who can afford it. These set of people are so fixated on foreign degrees especially from the UK that if you suggested cheaper options to them, they would scorn you. Most of these people then graduate and come back to the country only to realise that the investment they thought they had made wasn't as good as they thought it would be due to the situation of the economy and all. Right now, rather than study any MSc course, I'll prefer if someone paid for a Javascript Nanodegree for me on Treehouse or Udacity. After one year of constant coding, I'll command better salaries than most graduates who went abroad for MSc. Worst case scenario, I'll look for a remote developer job or freelance full time. Funny thing is, the Nanodegree costs less than $1,000! 5 Likes 2 Shares |

Majestee: Did you really type this? So you mean that those Call Centre agents who are hired because they speak Yoruba, Igbo or Hausa were not employed because of the language they speak? Do you know that some companies (especially those whose HQ are not located in natively English speaking countries) have strict bi-lingual requirements for anyone who wants to become a C-level executive? How about those people who translate for people? At least in the Tech industry where I work; I know that software is usually translated into multiple languages to enhance its reach due to a factor called localization. Wait! Did you think the French use an English version of Twitter, Facebook or Whatsapp? And don't think I have veered off topic. Your question was Does language provide jobs?. And the emphatic answer is yes! Why Nigerians so much look down on their local languages baffle me. If Facebook (the same Facebook that now has 2 billion users) has been translated to Hausa, then it means that Hausa is important to Facebook. I bet you didn't know that. What if I also told you that the popular Windows Operating System and Microsoft Office Suite has Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba language packs? I know because I have the Yoruba language pack installed on my PC. If these powerful Corporations are conscious of how local languages drive the adoption of their products, then we that own the languages should not trample on them. Language is and will continue to be a very powerful tool for economic, psychological and social development. 7 Likes

The fact that this is even considered a question baffles me. I often hear parents say that learning one's tribal language has negative consequences for the person's spoken or written English. This is a fallacy of the highest order. Wole Soyinka writes beautifully in English but if you read his Yoruba works, you'd fall in love with the language all over again. I have read Chimamanda too and her strong grasp of Igbo is very obvious in the way she writes. I think that what most parents are trying to hide is the fact that they don't buy books for their wards or encourage them to read! I never called my father "dad, daddy or father". I called him "Baba Mi" till he died. At home, we rarely spoke English; strictly Yoruba. But I can boldly say I have never failed an English Language or Literature exam. In fact, I rarely studied or prepared for them. This is because my father made sure I started reading Shakespeare and Dickens since Primary School. By the time I was in Primary 6, he introduced me to D.O. Fagunwa and other Yoruba authors. Today, I am proud to say that I read, speak and write Yoruba and English very well. Finally, please note "The history, culture and societal values of a group of people is in their language. Kill or erase the language, and the people would soon lose their sense of identity." 14 Likes |

bukatyne: I said anyone with a desire to learn should not be written off.. But also note an important fact: most people just need someone who will give them that "small push in the right direction". If not for the uncle of my brother's friend; he'd still be a vulcanizer. Truth is, we all need someone to believe in us and encourage us to believe in ourselves and our abilities. Some people are naturally go getters; they just have it in them. Some need a slight push in the right direction; they take it up from there. Some need to be explained to first why that push would be to their benefit before they lift a finger. What the OP should ask himself essentially is if he can convince the lady that she needs to improve on her spoken english (for herself) without being judgmental or condescending. It is one thing to nudge someone in the right path; it is another thing to want to force that right path on the person. I guess we both know that when it comes to adults; the latter yields very little result. Hope you understand my POV. Barak (blessing) |

I'm gonna tell you a story. My brother has a friend; they graduated from the university together. Dude went to a conc pako public primary school where the mode of communication was Yoruba. After Secondary School, dude went to learn how to be a vulcanizer. When he was almost through with his training, he approached an uncle to help him with money for accommodation. His intentions were simple; after graduation, settle down. Uncle encouraged him to go to computer school instead of renting a house; he agreed. Then later, uncle encouraged him to get a jamb form. Dude was like "ki lo n shey boda yii now" (what is wrong with this brother) but reluctantly agreed. This same person graduated as the second best student in his class, is now a graduate assistant in the school (a federal govt university) and currently enrolled in a MSc. program. My brother once told me he went to his hostel room very early one day while they were undergraduates and found him reading "Queen Primer" and "Brighter Grammar". Now, dude is so fresh and packaged with impeccable english too. My point: anyone with a desire to learn should not be written off. No one brought "good english" from heaven. It's a skill we all acquired here on earth. If that's the only place she is wanting; it can be corrected. My 2 cents 4 Likes

SetSquared is an incubator birthed as a result of a collaboration between 4 Universities in the UK. I don't have to remind you that the US and UK don't have power problems. I also hope you know that in the US, a cable TV subscription comes with internet access. So why have incubators when the guys can just work from home or their dorm room? Nigerian universities should be encouraged to have incubators simples.
