First of all Achebe is a black man that wrote a novel that has been translated into over 50 languages worldwide. Achebe and Soyinka are great frends that hold nigeria at heart. remember that before Mamman Vatsa a fellow writer was to be killed for a phantom coup, achebe, soyinka, okigbo and some other top writers in nigeria went to the presidency to plead for the life of their fellow writer who was not an IGBO or a YORUBA but a nigerian by birth,a writer by profession and a human being with blood. babangida promised them to do something about it but hardly had they left the presidential villa when they heard that he had been shot and guess what these writers were all in the same car. did u notice unity amongst them.they exhibited unity and prayed that Mamman Vatsa the great poet be spared. if u think i am lieing ask Soyinka. Achebe's TFA will always be mentioned for all time when african literature is concerned just as we hear shakespear and remember the white man. we have to learn to appreciate our own and see beyond the veil of ethnicism and appreciate ourselves and praise those deserving praise. in the year that soyinka got the nobel prize, there was a meeting organized for african writers in sweden that was held as a forum to discuss african literature but achebe refused to attend saying that african literature should be discussed in africa or a place where african literature is highly regarded. one of the african writers then then said that singular protest from achebe made achebe lose out of the nobel winners..pls Sam that is talking, how many pple read his newspaper or his column sef....pls feel free to correct me wit facts and proofs...i will always appreciate our writers like achebe, soyinka, okigbo and vatsa and many others..no matter what people may say..until the lion begins to write his own story, the hunter will always dictate how things happened..

obowunmi: @ OP: most so-called "African" intellectuals not just Nigerians, write from the United States or London, somewhere abroad....and not in their respective countries. Sounds like an irony to me.

Wole Soyinka is an exception. Even Adichie is based in the U.S. I find it very sad.

where has your knowledge flown too.is it far asia or antartica.have u forgotten the right to freedom of movement and freedom of expression irrespective of where u are. what abt emeagwali is he in naija or u.s.a. if he was in naija, perhaps he may not have gotten d platform to do what he did.where did John write d book of revelation? was it not in exile in patmos.was he in his native country. what matters is your mind, your passion and your dream about an entity. distance or location doesnt matter afterall african writers including soyinka during d civil war wrote against it from abroad and remember the abacha regime. did soyinka not write against abacha from beyond the shores of nigeria

thelonestranger: Could Achebe have made it in today's Nigeria? What has he done to improve prospect of younger Nigerian writers?

https://www.nairaland.com/1235784/could-chinua-achebe-make-it#14918792

go and research what he has done to improve the lot of african, world and lastly nigerian writers as a whole.People should learn how to research facts before posting idiotic, senseless, stupid write ups that smack of lack of quality education. if u think i dont know what i am saying ask NGUGI

Pataki:

You pathetic IbHOES will just never learn!

Why is your role model not being buried in his homeland in Ogidi or wherever it is in Nigeria?

After all said and done, Ashebe contributed bigotry and tribalism on a nauseating level to Nigeria.

Fullstop!

this your post shows u are daft and dumb and not in tune with the news. ACHEBE IS GOING TO BE BURIED IN OGIDI, IDEMMILI NORTH, ANAMBRA STATE SOON. The ibos or IBHOES as i see that your english foundation lacks so much mortar have a tradition and Achebe kept his tradition without allowing the western influence affect him. he is going to be buried in ogidi soon.i will send u the date when i am sure
You are very right! And instead of him to use his old age to bring unity, the selfish and senseless igbo nature controlled him, he fanned embers of wickedness. u igbos are fools, and bloody senseless liars like achebe, twisting history. I don't know any other tribe that is as ungrateful as d igbos. d Thoughtful Yorubas accepts them like brothers yet they rant about us. They are cowards, hausas are slaughtering their brothers like rams in the North, they do nothing.igbos always think they r d wisest and that is why they are fools who think life is only about money.igbos r d Genesis of d problem of dis country, traitors who spared their greedy leaders in January 29,1966 Coup. The civil war would not have happened. Yorubas don't betray, read history, ur useless father azikwe started d betrayal thing when Awolowo helped him to d top and he didn't fulfill his part of their agreement.in d January 1966 igbo coup,Brgd Ademulegun, Col Fajuyi and other Great Youruba Millitary Men were killed, as usual d ever deceitful igbos, against the agreement, told their greedy leaders to skedaddle. igbos must apologize to d Yorubas now!d YORUBAS are already uniting and getting ready for u people.igbos or hausas, what u want is want u shall get from us,Peace or War![/quot

u suffer from lack of knowledge. but i will help u. FAJUYI was a loyal officer that was hosting his COMMANDER IN CHIEF in Ibadan when the counter coup plotters struck.this was in july 1966 and guess what it was THEOPHILUS DANJUMA that tore their epaulets and had them beaten up. they were tied to d back of their land rover and they were dragged along as the d car moved..they died slow,[ainful and agonising death not at d hand of an IBO man but at d hands of d vengeful hatefilled blind plotters of d july counter coup. Fajuyi according to d history books will always remain a TRUE NIGERIAN REVOLUTIONARY, a true soldier and a loyal nigerian. irespect him for all time for such actions. A man that chose to die with his Superior instead of betraying him or running away. before putting up facts on social sites i advise u get ur data straight as false information smacks of faulty education..The ibos are one of the true tribes that believe in nigeria..for starters who are d people that go any part of d country and erect structures and factories and even employ d local folks..its d ibo man..he takes anywhere he stays as his home and tries his best to develop it as he can..who furnishes a house that he rents and when packing still leaves d permanent furnishings for d landlord even in cases where d landlord doesnt reimburse d tenant. its still d ibo pple. besides who wants to tell me that he or she doesnt like money.everytribe likes money as we need money to take care of life issues, family and necessities. show me a man who says he doesnt need money and i will point out d greatest liar of d century. we should stop pretending, we all need money and d ibo man has a natural entrepreneurial spirit. so wats your stress abt d money thing.its normal i know we hv proved our right to citizenship in this country so this thread only serves to fan up the embers of hatred in d society. if u continue doing it, then u are worse off than d pple who could have stopped d civil war

i believe with a very strong conviction that there are many haters and stupid critics that have never read "THERE WAS A COUNTRY" and just read some verdicts about it and conclude that ACHEBE was planning to destabilise nigeria or destroy it. how many of you here in nairaland have achieved success in ur chosen fields to d point of international recognition and have still gotten the courage to speak truth to power. The truth is dat many people cannot shun national awards as a form of protest as to what is happening in the country. this is because they are made of glass hearts and cant withstand criticism from power or avoid d allures and temptations of dining with d mighty. Achebe shunning d national awards is a great act that a true patriot can only too. if nigeria had been good,i doubt if he would reject that award. ACHEBE CHINUA IS A NATIONAL HERO OF NIGERIA FOR ALL TIME..d truth is that there are many cowards in nigeria especially in nairaland who cant see beyond d veil..i pray that all these tribalism and hatred be wiped out someday and people be recognized by their true worth..i recommend that before ur criticism buy the book THERE WAS A COUNTRY and read for yourself to get a first hand knowledge of d book b4 going to lambast it

GEJ wasterribly wrong in pardoning people who have squandered the public purse and caused untold hardship and suffering on the nigerian populace. how could he pardon such a man that made ribadu go through hell to bring him to judgement. If indeed Bill Gates cancelled his trip because of that then this was really a good decision as he shows that corruption should never be tolerated and should be eschewed at all levels.. why didnt jona not pardon those languishing in naija prisons for stealing goat and chicken out of sheer hunger. he went and pardoned someone who laundered billions of naira, dressed like a woman to escape prosecution and brought shame to our country. GEJ AND THEIR COHORTS ARE VISIONLESS LEADERS..WANTON SUPPORTERS OF EVIL..neva forget Alams was formerly HIS OGA AT D TOP...

all4naija: In another sense the previous commenter is right about end as in wiping out the human race from the earth by our own hand. The way some rogue states are pursuing nuclear ammunitions there are evidences if there is world war we might likely see the near end of human race, not the end of world actually.

for fools like us that believe in this so called enigma by u. i wanted u to know that constantine repented and God used him to expand his church which proves that God uses people good or bad to achieve his goal whether they like it or not. if u think that it is d continuation of roman empire wat abt d brutal saul who repented and who God decided to use as d apostle tod gentiles. maybe his writings are a continuation of PERSECUTION STORIES REDEFINED IN THEORY by Saul turned Paul
Religion / Re: Benedict XVI To Be Known As 'Pope Emeritus' by simplygreat(m): 12:14pm On Feb 28, 2013
redsun: Egyptian empire lasted for over five thousand years. Where is it today? It has been redirected, recreated in the form of Christianity.

The virgin birth and ressurrection are originally egyptian, but Christianity is so blinding that even educated people don't tend to look beyond the stories concorted by the colonization, especially the African adherents.

ur comments are absolute bunkum smacking of ur ignorance of history
