MissMetro: Following the resolution of the Lagos State House of Assembly on Thursday relieving the Executive Secretaries of the 57 Local Governments Councils and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the State of their responsibilities, the State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode has approved the immediate dissolution of the Caretaker Committees.
In a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr Tunji Bello, the Governor also directed the Executive Secretaries to hand over the reins of administration to the Head of Administration in each of the Council Areas.
Thursday’s dissolution of the Caretaker committees is preparatory to the holding of elections into the 57 Council Areas by the State Government and ensuring that the necessary machineries are put in place preparatory to the elections.
The State House of Assembly had also on April 22 this year passed into law a bill recommending a four year tenure for elected Local Government helmsmen instead of the three years tenure that hitherto obtained.
It would be recalled that the Caretaker Committees which was headed by Executive Secretaries were inaugurated by former Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola on January 5, 2015.

Crime › Re: Court Awards $1Million To Ricky Jackson For Spending 40 Years In Jail Wrongly by sinola(m): 11:35pm On May 10, 2016 |
Dharniel: An African American man who spent nearly 40 years behind bars in the US state of Ohio for a murder he did not commit will receive $1 million from the state for his wrongful imprisonment. On Thursday, an Ohio Court of Claims judge ordered that just more than $1 million be paid to Ricky Jackson. Jackson said he learnt about the payment from a reporter who had called him on Thursday afternoon to get his reaction over the court order. “Wow, I didn’t know that,” Jackson said. “Wow wow wow, that’s fantastic, man. I don’t even know what to say. This is going to mean so much.” Michele Berry, his attorney from the Innocence Project, said a financial advisor will help Jackson to handle the money in the wisest way. After hearing the news of the court order, Berry became emotional and expressed her appreciation for all that the innocent black man went through. “It’s been an honor to work for and with Ricky,” she said. “He’s probably the wisest person I’ve ever met.” In November, Jackson, 57, and Wiley Bridgeman, 60, were both exonerated in a 1975 murder after a key witness against them, who was 13 years old at the time, admitted in 2013 that he lied during his testimony. Eddie Vernon, now 53, told a minister who visited him at a hospital in 2013 that he had never actually witnessed the crime. He said Cleveland police detectives coerced him into testifying that the men killed businessman Harry Franks on May 19, 1975. The Ohio Innocence Project, which took up their case, said Jackson and Bridgeman’s 39 years imprisonment mark them as the longest-serving exonerees in US history. According to a study released in April, one in every 25 death row inmates in the United States is innocent. Approximately 3,000 US prisoners are waiting to be put to death. African Americans are also far more likely to be arrested and imprisoned by police than any other racial group, according to a recent analysis by USA TODAY. Experts say the dramatic gap in arrest and prison rates reflects biased policing as well as the vast economic and educational inequalities that plague much of the US.

Jubril Mohamed, the lawyer to late Nigerian footballer, Rashidi Yekini, has said that his client never neglected his family, including his mother, while he was alive.
Mr. Mohammed said Yekini helped not only his family but also those he had no relationship with. “Contrary to the widespread rumour trending on the social media where Rashidi Yekini’s mother Sikiratu Yekini is seen standing an impoverished woman hawking bread for survival, I have to come out strongly to condemn in strong terms the malicious attempt by the uninformed sets of people who are set to tarnish the good image of late Rashidi Yekini as a prodigal son who never took care of his family especially his mother,” he said in a statement on Saturday.
Mr. Mohammed attached to his statement pictures of the house Yekini built for his mother before he died. He said the Nigerian legend’s mother had always been a petty trader even when her son was alive.
“This background building of Yekini`s mother picture trending online is actually a garage in the 4 flats built by my late client in Ijagbo few kilometre to Offa and about 9 kilometres away from his village, Ira. Even before the demise of Rashidi, the woman had always been in charge of the rent of the building which runs into to several hundreds of thousands of naira without Rashidi interfering.
“The Boy`s quarters at the back of the main building as at 2006 was around N48,000.00 each, while each 3 bedroom flat in the main building goes for about N80,000.00 each or more which brought her annual income from rent of the building to about half a million naira despite the fact that Rashidi was always sending pocket money to her and her siblings. Apart from this, Rashidi made sure he empowered his entire sibling by opening one of the best hairdressing saloon for his late sister, late Rofiat, who also died in 2014.”
“Even after the death of Rashidi, nobody, not even his two daughters have ever interfered on who takes the rent. Not even the ex-wives, on behalf of their respective daughters ever query the mother about the income from the building. I wonder how she is now starving. Two of her children are dead (Rashidi and Rofiat) leaving only Ismaila and Akeem. Ismaila is based in Kaduna with his family. While Hakeem is the only person living with her with his wife. How is she starving? Can an old woman exhaust over half a million on feeding alone in a year?”
The lawyer said he was not opposed to any further help for Yekini’s mother.
“I am not against any further assistance by any well meaning Nigerian to her but I owe my late client the duty to set the record straight and because of the negative reactions on social media especially through Sahara Reporter which portray Rashidi as an irresponsible son, who never cared about his family. I am seriously upset about the impression being created by the people who have read the unfortunate story. The gospel and uncontroverted truth is that Rashidi made adequate provision for his mother. The questions that we should be asking is how are his two daughters faring and who is responsible for their education and upkeep,” he said.
Yekini is Nigeria’s highest ever goal scorer and won the African footballer of the year in 1993. He was part of the Nigerian team that won the African Nations Cup in 1994 and scored Nigeria’s first ever goal at the World Cup that same year.

tolexy007: Gunmen at the weekend killed 83 cows at Adayi in Nasarawa Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. At Loko, the monarch claimed that about 20 people have been killed by gunmen in the last few weeks. The killings were suspected to be reprisals by gunmen who crossed over from Benue State. Although security agencies have stepped up investigation, the Fulani leader of Adayi area of Loko, Mallam Bideri Ahmadu, alleged that suspected Agatu gunmen from Benue State might be behind the killings. The traditional ruler of Loko, Alhaji Abubakar Ahmed Sabo, alleged that Agatu youths might have perpetrated the act. The Fulani community leader, Mallam Bideri Ahmadu, who addressed reporters in Loko, alleged that Agatu youths crossed over from Benue State about 10:30am last Saturday. He said the suspects had wanted to “rustle the cows in their boats across River Benue, but the cattle went berserk because of sporadic shootings.” Ahmadu said: “Upon realising they could not achieve their aim, the Agatu youth opened fire on the cows, killing 83. The injured ones are in the bush.” The Mai Loko, Alhaji Abubakar Ahmed Sabo, said in the last few weeks, over 20 men, women and children were killed during attacks on Fulani people by Agatu youths from Benue State. He said the Loko Development Area has only two police officers with no rifles and appealed for more security presence. Sabo urged the Fulani not to retaliate because the government was looking into the crisis. The Director of Personnel Management (DPM) of the development area, Danlami Umar, said the “fishing community has suffered a setback because the riverine area has been taken over by Agatu youths, who kill at will. Police spokesman Ismaila Numan said the Nasarawa Division received a report of the killing of 83 cows by suspected hoodlums and investigation had started. A security source said: “There has been tension in the area since the killing of more than 300 people in Agatu area of Benue State by suspected Fulani herdsmen. “We are suspecting reprisals by Agatu youths who do not want Fulani herdsmen in their area again. “The crisis between the Fulani and the Agatu is posing a threat to life and property in the two states. “Nasarawa and Benue governments have to step into the incessant clashes between the Fulani and the Agatu.” www.thenationonlineng.net/gunmen-kill-20-persons-83-cows-nasarawa/ Shebi, when the southerners were complaining about this fulani herdsmen and their barbaric act,the Northern governors including Nasarawa Governor had a meeting and came up with their selfish propaganda that an insult on an average fulani man is an insult to all Northerners instead of finding a lasting solution to this menace. This is exactly the way Boko Haram started, and if care is not taken, this meyhem will escalate to the whole country including Northern zone and by then,it will be seemingly uncontrollable just like what is happening in the North-East now.
