the number series start from 001 to 999. The last digits are used for differentiation purposes. When the numbering gets to 999, it goes back to 001, but with a different 2 letter codes. So, if the numbering begins with AA, the next code could be AE, and so on.
Secondly, the last two digits could also be reserved for some specific vehicles. The Q series used to be for bikes and tricycles. QA, QB, ETC. The X for taxis and transport vehicles, the H for hilux vans, etc

I used to think the last two letters stands for the initials(name/surname) of the owner of the plate number/vehicle.

Ever wondered what the codes on license plate number stands for.

The unique plate combination of all non customised plate numbers is in the format ABC-123DE.The first three letters indicate the Local Government Area in which the vehicle was registered, which are followed by three digits and two letters.
