Your take home after tax will be about 60+k meaning about 5k a month. This is enough to manage ur life well. This is my opinion, I have never lived in NL. my family of 3 lived on about 2500 per month in edmonton when we arrived .

Ah, you spoke my mind. grin

Thank you to everyone who has been contributing to this thread, it's been very helpful.
I have a question and will appreciate if the seniors can give insights.
I recently got a job offer in St John's NL for CAD85k, the company will process lmia and all. Will this salary be sustainable for I, my spouse and an infant in that province?

More than enough! Big congratulations on your job offer! Getting such a good job from Naija is no small feat. My family of 4 lived on $42,000 when we first landed in Toronto and we lived just fine.

For those who are scared of the cold there is nothing to be worried about. The body adapts. Went for a walk in minus 1 degree. Couldn’t feel any cold but last year i was shivering in 5 degrees self

True. Sometimes now, I have to open my window in winter. I would take Canada's cold over Nigeria's heat any day. I can't function in heat but there are always ways to navigate a cold weather.

And to think I was so worried about winter before emigrating. . .SMH

Good day Fam ,
1-Please I have a 2 year old child who would accompany me to Canada but he's a US citizen. I would like to know if the child is meant to undergo a medical examination with me or is he exempt since he's a US citizen but living in Nigeria.

2-After getting visa approval can someone arrive Canada 2 days before medicals expires?
Eg medicals to expire 1 January ,2023 is it ok to arrive 29 or 30th December? Or must the perosn do another medicals?
Please I need your quick response. Thank you

Thank you.

@bolded; if both of you are coming as a permanent residents, then yes, your son will have to do medicals regardless of his US nationality.

she don kolo lol. Some landlords in gta dont take Nigerians because of this food issue, there houses are not well ventilated. I remembered when i stayed in a basement to use pepper and onion na wahala grin. Cook with low heat and also spray perfume grin

Yep. One landlord asked me if I cooked with onion. I answered in the affirmative. She went on to tell me how much food smell irritated her. I come dey wonder to myself; so she considers onion smell irritating. I never even add iru and stock fish.

Both of us agreed we were not meant for each other. cheesy

Good morning house.
Please, can a family of three in Canada (the child is less than 2years) survive with $1500 every month without house rent or house utilities like, heat, internet etc.

Also, can someone switch from visiting visa to spouse open work permit inside Canada, if the partner is a student.

Thanks

Yes! Without rent or child care fees.

As for your second question, I think it is possible. You might want to do your research on that.

Update!
Accra returned my passport on Friday without the stamp undecided

Now, Ircc has given me instructions to send my passport again. Question is, can I send it to Abuja VAC instead? I learnt the passport will go to Nairobi VO. Reason why I’m considering Abuja is that I have not been able to get hold of who’d help me pay in Ghana cedis to Accra VAC.

Pls I’d like to know if the VO I send my passport to matters since I’ve already used Accra before

Wow!

Wow! Just wow!

I really can not believe people's comments. She should "fight for her marriage"? She should "fast and pray"? She should know that "if the man is deported, he will not stay married to her"? Is this marriage? Someone even said the other lady "is just a girlfriend". What is wrong with people? How damaged can anyone be to try to rationalize this man's behaviour?? There is no reason for anyone to not speak with their spouse for 4 months. 4 good months! Even if he's in jail, he will be allowed to make calls every once in awhile. The only reason that makes sense to me is if he is dead.

Amakaoyekachi1, what you are going through is not ok and I've got to say; you have handled it with so much grace. I am pretty sure I would have lost my mind after 1 week. I'm so sorry you are going through this. This is not what marriage should look like, and it sucks even more that you were newly weds before his trip. This is the time you two should be building your future with each other. I don't know what the foundation of your marriage is, but sis, it does not look good. If he is indeed alive, then he does not want to be in that marriage and it is NOT your job to make him remain in it. Marriage requires two people's effort and commitment, only yours cannot sustain it. He must have told his family his plan and that is why they are not forthcoming with information. Even his close friends will know. You are nobody's fool and don't act like one. I repeat, this is not how marriage should be.

You asked if someone who is married in Nigeria can be allowed to get married again in Canada. . .It depends on his status when he did his application. If he came into Canada as a married man, then he would need to produce divorce papers or death certificate of the previous spouse to be allowed to get married again. But there is nothing stopping him from having a live-in-lover (and I suspect this is the case) and the authorities won't do anything if that's what is going on. It is not illegal to cheat on one's spouse.

You said you have the contact of his supervisor? Why haven't you called? How does calling his supervisor to ask his whereabouts put him in trouble? You need to reach him through any means possible. You deserve some closure. You are his WIFE. Thankfully, you two don't have kids yet. Start planning how to move on from this after you get the closure. It will take some time, but eventually, you will heal. Know that this is not your fault. Even if you are the worst wife in history, you do not deserve to be ghosted.

Good luck sis.

Please I want to confirm if canned fish (e.g geisha) and vegetable oil is allowed into Canada.

I know sardine is allowed, so geisha should be too.

Also, I don't think oil is prohibited but you will be wasting baggage space bringing it. The oil here is way cheaper and much healthier.

I'm on Alberta Student Aid but studying in Ontario. My classmates on OSAP have way more grant than I do. In fact, Alberta did not give me any grant. The little grant I get is from the federal government.

Bang on. Ontario gives more grants especially to married people with kids.

Another option apart from low cut, wigs and dreads is crochet.

If you can at least weave/cornrow your own hair all back into 8 or 10 lines, just get a crochet pin and take already braided crochet braids or spring twists along and you're good to go in under 1 hour. You can buy the crochet braids ready made packs or just get the extensions and have your regular salon make them into crochet for you.

Good suggestions.

Wow, lemme charter plenty wigs before I leave. Thanks for the heads up

If you have natural luscious hair, you might want to consider putting it in locks instead of cutting it. You can always cut it later if you change your mind.

Ladies in the house please how easy and convenient is it to get a stylist in Canada that is good with natural hair? Especially in Newfoundland

I am considering cutting my hair before traveling as I wouldn’t want to be spending so much money on my hair as a student

Join the club grin. It's not just the money, it's the associated inconvenience and stress. You can use wigs if you end up not feeling the short hair.

Please, are those that landed this year supposed to file taxes?

You can't file taxes for 2021 in 2021. You can only file for the previous year/s and not the current year.

Hi all, I will be traveling to Canada on May 7th, by God’s grace and I want to start shopping. Please I need everyone’s help as to what is allowed and what isn’t allowed. Here are the things I’m planning to bring with me when coming;
Ogbono, egusi, crayfish, black pepper, seasoning cubes (knorr and Royco), granola (roasted oats), satchet milk, tea bags, satchet milo, spaghetti, macaroni, red garri.
Please please please, will they all be allowed into Canada??

All are allowed except sachet milk. Dairy products are prohibited with the exception of those for babies.

Good day all. Kindly help a brother

I wish to know if truly Canada is in lockdown that caused companies to closed down. And also if there is any hope for reopening of these companies within the shortest period of time.

Thanks in anticipation for an answer

Yes, COVID cases are on the rise and many parts of Canada are on lockdown. Some companies have closed and many others are not employing. Unfortunately, there's no telling when this will end.

Get your full refund and run with it.

Why can't you read and understand? U just crop one paragraph out to justify your point. When did asking a question or seeking answers so as to know more about the economy of the US become a sense of entitlement. U people just like insulting people on nairaland just to draw attention and make yourself popular for an unnecessary reason. Please leave my thread alone, abeg.

Lol. Why else will you be asking if $270 is big or small if not for the sole reason of wanting people on here to echo your thoughts of him being stingy? You couldn't wait to find out for yourself when you move to the US?

Again, stop feeling entitled to someone else's money.

What and what can u buy with 270dollars. Is it really a big money like he said. Someone of what salary level will consider it a big money?

It really doesn't matter if $270 is big or small. It is HIS money and he has told you he can not afford to give you that much.

Stop feeling entitled to someone else's money.

Thank you so much for this. I already looked into this but the requirement for this particular school is that I must have graduated from the first degree less than five years ago and I graduated 2012. I also didn’t do two of the required courses (Psychology and Statistics). But now that you mentioned it, I will look into other Universities (since I only checked Uni of Alberta). Thank you once again .

Did you try the compressed program at Lakehead University?
I talked about this in one of my previous posts. Do look through. smiley
