Webmasters › How To Convince A Hotel To Let Me Design Their Website by smartsoft(op): 9:10pm On Jul 03, 2006
An Hotel Website!

hello guys, please can someone tell me what are things i'm going to face tomorrow, i saw an hotel around my environment. truly this is hotel is kind of new and you could compare it to hotels we have there at the Island e.g Eko Hotel and Suites, like Sheraton Hotel very beautifull infact, i really rate the hotel as number one hotel around my area.

But the problem is, i went there on my way to the school and i ask if i could drop a proposal letter for a website Design, the gatekepper direct me to a lady who really welcomed me, i explain who i am to her and she directed me to the receiption, and i met the young lady who welcomed me too their response was okay, and the recieption lady ask me to see the MD around 8:30am.In nutshell i would like to know what are things i'm going to face or things i might say to the MD, i don't want him to look at me like a small rat.

And someone advice me not to go there for just telling them to build a website alone, i should try and tell them how they can reach their targeted customers.

Jobs/Vacancies › 9 Steps To New Job Success by smartsoft(op): 3:36am On Jun 29, 2006
1. Work, work, work and then work some more. No substitute, no short cut will replace work. This means more than working diligently from eight to five. Take work home for nights and on weekends. Near total immersion in the job is recommended.

2. Arrive early on the job and stay late. Get to work at least 30 minutes before the specified starting time for the first several months. This is a good time, before the interruptions of the day start, to take care of routine chores and get a head start on the day.

Often, the boss is also in early. (That may have something to do with his being boss.) It's a great time to get better acquainted with him.

Demonstrate interest in the job. Ask for extra information and guidance.

Stay a while after the regular hours. Clean up the personal work place.

Collect the files and reading materials to take home for review that night.

Make a list of actions to be taken the next day.

3. Don't expect to conquer the world in six months.
But realize the scoreboard is operating from day one.

4. Don't be afraid to ask questions and seek help when needed. To do so is a sign of strength not an admission of weakness, as is often assumed. Seeking assistance, intelligently, shows confidence and desire to do the job.

Acquire a mentor as soon as possible. Find someone who has been around the track to provide coaching and share experiences. This will not be difficult to do; most people like to be asked for advice.

5. Observe how things "really get done." Learn how the machinery of the organization works. (This is likely to be quite different from what's spelled out in the policy and training manuals.) Absorb the folklore.

6. Don't join cliques or deal in office politics. Leave the gossip to others.

7. Respect the hierarchy. The organization is bigger and stronger than any one person. The new boy in the neighborhood can't change it in the beginning. Recognize and respect there's a chain of command; everybody has a boss. Rebels rarely survive for the long haul.

8. Know the business of the business,
the mission of the organization, what it does and what values it represents. Learn how the job fits into the overall picture.

9. Adapt to the environment. Observe the style of dress casual or more buttoned down? and be guided by it.
Jobs/Vacancies › 10 Tips To Get Your Dream Job by smartsoft(op): 3:02am On Jun 29, 2006
1. Unlearn everything you’ve been taught about the value of compromise. Offering to give something up in order to get what you want is as American as apple pie, yet the best negotiation professionals don’t do it. Compromise puts you at an immediate disadvantage from the start. You don’t have to give anything up, including your self-confidence, in order to get this job.

2. Do impeccable homework and preparation about the company and position. Use the internet, read the local paper, make calls and inquiries. And bring your notes with you, including any questions that have come up in the course of preparing.

3. Do not try to impress your interviewer with your dress, attitude, or style of communicating. It will backfire. Be honest, direct, and authentic instead.

4. Don’t be needy. You do not need this job. You need water, food, and air. You do not NEED this job. Neediness is the number-one advantage killer.

5. Be emotionally neutral. Learn to clear your mind of assumptions, fears, and expectations so you can maintain a calm, open-minded perspective at all times. When emotions enter into a negotiation, failure follows. Retrieve a dropped pen if necessary to get your emotions back to calm if they start to intrude.

6. Do not come with a prepared statement. Instead, have prepared questions. Find out what your interviewer wants, how s/he views the position. Get her/him talking as much as possible, while you take notes.

7. Ask questions that begin with interrogatives, such as what, how, and why. This will help YOU direct the dialogue. By avoiding simple yes/no answers, this style of questioning helps you find out more about what’s in your interviewer’s mind.

8. Get your interviewer to reveal what a “good fit” means to him or her. Your objective is to find out whether this organization is a good fit for YOU.

9. Answer questions with questions as much as possible. Determine your interviewer’s position and uncover any hidden agendas. Word your questions to keep your interviewer reassured, relaxed, and trusting you.

10. Base everything you say ONLY on information that has been disclosed in the interview. Don’t guess what your interviewer means by something, or wants to know. Effective negotiating is all about collecting information in the present time, taking copious notes, and responding only to the actual facts you’ve collected. If you don’t have enough facts to answer your questioner, ask for them.

Note. : Don't sit down until you are been ask to sit down,
Look straight to the interviewer's eyes
            Don't keep stairing your eyes
            don't look up or down
            Don't look sideways
When you been asked how much you wanna earn, simply tell them your mind and don't bit around the bush
             Don't get intimediated
             Look smarts.

Well more to come anyway just watchout for  Nigeriadreamjobs

niyyie:
Pricing is not enough reason to choose a particular web host.

Other factors are very important:

- Customer support: How fast will they reply when you have problems?
- Reliability: How reliable is their network infrastructure?
- Skill: How skilled are their support staff? Can they solve all your web hosting problems?
- Security: Is their datacenter secure from intruders?
- Power: Do they have a power back-up (batteries and generators) in case the main power source goes off?
- Backup: Do they back-up the contents of their clients websites? How often? (You'd have to fall back on back-up data in case of trouble.

I could go on and on,
good Point

I have started working with C++ and I'll love to stick to it as I'm very comfortable with it. I would have loved to use VB.net as I'm more comfortabe with that, but, to the best of my knowledge, embedded programming is impossible with VB. Am I right?

If you are going to do this using c++, how do you use an Access file with it? I'm currently going through cplusplus.com to get info on this.

Thanks in advance
Well it's very possible and i don't work with C++ but it kinda easy to use Access file in VB

Programming › Re: Web Based Software Vs Standalone Solution by smartsoft(op): 10:49am On Jun 23, 2006
okay you guys see What Defines a Web Application Vs a Desktop Application?
A web application is an application delivered to users from a web server like the Internet. Some businesses run web applications on an intranet, as well. Web applications are becoming more popular due to the widespread use of the web browser as a client.

Some applications are better suited and more likely to become successful as web applications. Web applications designed specifically for search engine optimization, have become increasingly popular. It is easy to understand why web applications that relate to the Internet would prosper, while business applications may have less appeal in a web environment.

A desktop application is a self-contained program that performs a defined set of tasks under the user control. Desktop applications run from a local drive and do not require a network or connectivity to operate or function properly, though if attached to a network desktop applications might use the resources of the network.

Pros and Cons to Desktop and Web Applications:

Easily Accessible
Web applications can be easily accessed from any computer or location that has Internet access. Travelers especially benefit from the accessibility. This often means that if a traveler has access to a computer, phone or handheld with Internet connectivity they can utilize the web application.

Low Maintenance & Forced Upgrades
Desktop applications need to be individually installed on each computer, while web applications require a single installation.
Many web applications are hosted by a 3rd party and the maintenance fall under the applications hosts responsibility. The ability to update and maintain web applications without distributing and installing software on potentially thousands of client computers is a key reason for the popularity of web based applications. This can be a blessing and a curse as users of web applications on hosted systems are at the mercy of the host, if an upgrade does not go well, or the individual user doesn't want or need the new features the upgrade will still go forward.

Increased Security Risks
There are always risks involved when dealing with working online, regardless of how secure a host might say a web application is, that fact of the matter stands that the security risk of running an application of the Internet is more significant than when running an application on a standalone desktop computer. Some applications require more security than others, playing Sudoku on a web application would cause little concern, but dealing with sensitive corporate formulas or accounting details in a web environment might be determined risky.

Cost
Over the life of the software use, web applications are typically significantly more expensive over time. Desktop applications are purchased outright and rarely is their a recurring fee for the software use. Some desktop applications do have maintenance fees or fee based upgrades associated with them, but rarely is there a subscription fee associated with the software's ongoing use.

Many corporate web applications use a different model, users typically are charged monthly service fee to operate the software. Fees are considered "subscription fees". If you fail to renew your subscription you may be unable to access the data stored in the web application.

Connectivity
Web applications rely on persistent and unmanaged connectivity. If you do not have an Internet connection or if your host does not have Internet connectivity you cannot access the information. Critical applications or businesses that are time sensitive cannot risk denial of service attacks or power outages to interrupt their operations and access data that is sensitive.

Slower
Web applications that rely on the Internet to transfer data rather than a computer's local hard drive, may operate slower. The speed may also vary based on number of users accessing the application.

Backups & Ownership.
Regardless of the platform, companies need to be sure that their data is appropriately backed up. When using a web application that are hosted by a third party, companies should clearly determine who owns the data housed in the application, and be sure that privacy policies prevent that data from being used by the web host.

Ultimately the accessibility of web based applications make them very desirable. Web applications have some fundamental limitations in their functionality, and are better suited for specific tasks. Understanding the pro's and con's to each business model, will help users determine whether a desktop application or web application will better suit their needs.
