The most recent advances in methods of teaching and learning science would be on display next week as the University of Nigeria collaborates with UNESCO and the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) to mount a three-legged Science Fair from June 17-22. The UNESCO-UNN Science Fair would feature a micro-science and global water experiment, mobile learning science workshop as well as engineering without borders science outreach training for science teachers and students. About 1200 students and 85 teachers from secondary schools in the neighbourhood of the University would participate in the workshops and carry out practical experiments with the latest tools. They would participate in the UNESCO- IUPAC micro science and global water experiment designed to offer secondary school students the opportunity to conduct practical works in physics, chemistry and biology, using kits that come with booklets describing the experiments. The kits are veritable mini-laboratories that are compact, affordable and can be reused. UNESCO developed them in the late 1990s within the framework of International Basic Science Programme. The UNESCO-ICTP Mobile-Learning Workshop, the first of its kind in Africa, is targeted to guide academic staff in developing countries to be conversant with the newest mobile educational possibilities and the creation of scientific contents for mobile devices. The programme offers a balanced mix of technical details, general overview, societal impact and a sense of possibility with “Scientific Mobile Learning”. The training will accommodate 100 members of the academic staff and will be held at the Princess Alexandra Auditorium of the UNN. Vice Chancellor Prof Bartho Okolo said the University is collaborating with UNESCO on the projects as part of efforts to ensure that UNN operates at the highest global standards in teaching and learning. It would be recalled that UNESCO in February inaugurated a Scientific Advisory Board and flagged off the commencement of the International Biotechnology Centre UNESCO |
The South African Treasury has confirmed that an agreement, to repatriate the millions of dollars held in South Africa by the Muammar Gaddafi regime, has been reached with the Libyan Government. The Finance Minister, Pravin Gordhan, said the transfer of “what is thought to be about one billion dollars”, would be done under the terms of the UN Protocol. The asset are in the form of funds held by local banks as well as gold bullion stored at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport. Mr. Gordan met with a high-level Libyan Government delegation tasked with locating all asset taken out of Libya by Gaddafi and his aides. Earlier this month, it was revealed that Mr. Gaddafi’s former Chief of Staff, Bashir Saleh, who is on Interpol’s most-wanted list, had surfaced in South Africa. It appeared he assisted the deposed Libyan leader and his family to stash the money in South Africa. The official opposition Democratic Alliance said Mr. Saleh was spotted at the 5th BRICS summit in Durban earlier this year. It expressed concern at claims that he is able to fly regularly – without being detained – between South Africa, Swaziland and Niger. It called for Mr. Saleh to be arrested and a full investigation conducted “so that the world knows that South Africa will not allow itself to become a safe haven for international criminals.” (PANA/NAN) |
The former governor of Abia State, Orji Kalu, caused a stir on Wednesday when he told an audience at the Lagos Sheraton Hotel and Towers that he was not a politician. Mr. Kalu spoke at an event marking the 20th anniversary of the annulment of the June 12, 1993, election, organised by the Save Nigeria Group. Expectedly, the comment elicited loud murmuring from the audience interrupting the former governor in mid speech. “I’m not a politician… Excuse me, pardon me, all my life I’ve been building institutions in the private sector. I’m not a politician, this is why I speak the way I speak from the heart,” said Mr. Kalu. “I don’t care who thinks I’m going to offend him, my duty is to speak the truth. You can go home and hate me, you can come home and like me but the truth must be said,” he added. Mr. Kalu also blamed monumental corruption for the nation’s woes, singling out President Olusegun Obasanjo’s government whom he said embarked on a lot of white elephant projects. “I want to challenge those people in the corridor of power. I’m not a court of competent jurisdiction, I can never be one. I was governor for eight years and when somebody go to court of competent jurisdiction to charge me on security votes, because I didn’t support things government wanted me to support,” Mr. Kalu said. “And the same people, I challenge them, see the government that spent 6 billion, Pastor (Tunde) Bakare talked about 12, 16, 13, 14 billion, these are dollars, not naira. “And till today the government has not brought those people to book. Do we really want a change? We are not looking for a change. Before we talk about change, government must bring so many people to book. “You cannot be talking about electricity, most of the projects counted here President Obasanjo started …, I was governor then, I flagged it off, and billions of dollars we were putting down, where is the money?” The former Abia State governor noted that economic growth does not signify growth until it impacts on the people. “Economy cannot grow on 8 per cent, 9 per cent, 10 per cent without postal services, without highway being paved very well, without electricity supply, without people coming out of school and going to work,” said Mr. Kalu. “I have never seen any president of Nigeria that talks about job creation, you can say it but they are not doing it. I have fought to set up industries right from my mother’s womb, that is the truth. “I built the first major industry in Aba in 1982, the Slok Vegetable Oil. I mean, business men and women should make efforts to complement what government and the people are doing,” he added |

Controversial actress turned singer Tonto Dike strutted onto the stage to perform at Iyanya’s Kukere Concert on the 9th of June 2013 in London only to hit the floor moments later. It’s her most famous fall and it got social media buzzing at once. Tonto Dike has found it imperative to clear the air concerning this fall following rumours she may have been ‘drunk’ or ‘ high’ or both before hitting the stage. She tells Nollywood Movies Sky329 that her dress was the chief culprit followed by her shoes and then the ‘slippery’ floor. “It was a big…well not a big fall and I managed it well. I fell because I had this very long dress, and this very high shoe and a slippery ground, and because I wasn’t supposed to dance at my first coming out (sic). I had another outfit I could put on to really perform if I wanted to; it was my choice but I just came on and they played the song and I just had to dance and I slipped. I made it fun really, I got up and danced, I didn’t want to disappoint anybody especially myself. When I went back stage, I was dancing my head off. I couldn’t go back on stage because Iyanya was on stage and it was about closing. It was all his time. Nobody went back on stage after him. I wish I went back to dance again and not fall that time. |

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Thursday re-arraigned a former staff of Pensions Account, office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mohammed Katun, before the Federal High Court Abuja on a one-count charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretence, intent to commit fraud and diverting pension funds. Mr. Katun is alleged to have fraudulently obtained over N62 million from the pension account. The charge reads: “That you Mohammed Ahmed Katun, at various times between 2009 and 2010 within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, obtained by false pretence and with intent to defraud, from the Pensions Account, Office of the Head of Service of the Federation of Nigeria, various sums in the aggregate amount of N62,294,917.60 (Sixty Two Million, Two Hundred and Ninety Four Thousand, Nine Hundred and Seventeen Naira, Sixty Kobo) and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1(1)(a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act.” The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him. Upon the plea of the accused, his counsel, Nicholas Eku, prayed the court to admit the accused to bail. The prosecution counsel, Emmanuel Egwuagu, did not oppose the bail application, but asked the court to grant the accused bail on terms that will ensure his appearance in court. The judge, A.R Mohammed granted bail to the accused in the sum of N10 million and two sureties in like sum. One of the sureties, the judge said must be a federal civil servant not below grade level 10, while the other surety must have landed property in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT or its area councils. He added that the title documents of the property as well as the accused international passport are to be deposited with the court. The accused is also not to travel outside the country without the permission of the court. The case was adjourned to September 25 for trial. |
The Corporate Services Executive of MTN Nigeria, Akinwale Goodluck, has announced the decision of the company to discontinue SIM swaps by proxy with effect from June 7. Mr. Goodluck said this in a statement on Thursday in Lagos. He said that after June 7, customers who wished to swap or replace their SIM cards as a result of their phones being stolen, destroyed or misplaced must do so in person. According to him, the decision was taken in order to protect customers’ data and preserve the overall integrity of the SIM swap process. “In recent months, unscrupulous elements have started to exploit the proxy SIM swap process and there have been incidents of unauthorised people fraudulently obtaining SIM cards belonging to others. “The implication of this decision is that customers will now have to appear in person at the service outlets nearest to them to request and obtain new SIM cards. “Such requests will be treated promptly after proper ID validation from the SIM registration database and upon presentation of valid identification such as ID card, international passport or driver’s licence,” he said. Mr. Goodluck added that the customer would also be required to answer security questions before a new SIM card would be issued. He called on the company’s subscribers to urgently register their SIMs in view of the June 30 deadline or risk suspension of their mobile lines. Mr. Goodluck urged customers to register all SIM cards in their possession including those in phones, laptops, POS machines and all other SIM-enabled devices. The Customer Relations Executive of MTN, Akin Braithwaite, said that the organisation attached great seriousness to the issue of customer and data security. Mr. Braithwaite said that a significant number of SIM swap-related fraud were committed by people who were very close to the victims and had access to their personal data. He said that the new requirement that customers should carry out the SIM swaps in person would check the activities of fraudsters in this regard. |

There was riot in Igbariam campus in Anambra State University this morning. Heard things have died down a bit. According to unconfirmed reports from friends and relative armed robbers invaded the students' lodge last night to rob and they ended up shooting quite a few students. One student died last night, while another one who was shot died early this morning in the hospital. Some students decided the best way to respond to the incident was to riot against the school and state government, blaming lack of security for their fellow students' deaths. Students say they pay N135,000 per session for new students and 107,000 for old students and still don't have security or even a functioning hospital, plus no light! The rioting students went on the streets insisting on speaking with Governor Peter Obi. The students calmed down after the school Vice Chancellor addressed them about an hour ago |

No man should ever hit a woman. Of course, physical abuse isn’t the only kind of abuse, but people in love typically don’t abuse one another. For most people, getting married is a forever kind of thing. No one ever vows “’till death do us part” with the intention of only being together for a short while. But the reality is, sometimes life intrudes and things happen and 50 percent of marriages end in divorce. We read a lot about dating dealbreakers and reasons a person might break up with a boyfriend, but there are very few marriage dealbreakers. After all, one person might be willing to put up with something that had caused another person to leave months before. Debt is one of those things. But there are others, too. Here are 7 marriage dealbreakers that have caused many a divorce for all the right reasons: Drinking: There is drinking and then there is DRINKING. Having spent a fair amount of my early adulthood with a man who drank too much, I know what it’s like to watch one beer turn into eight and not know when he was going to stop. I know what it’s like to constantly hear he’s done drinking only to watch him get drunk again that night. At a certain point, I would never blame anyone for throwing in the towel on this kind of marriage. Smoking: Cigarettes may be a compromise, though honestly, I can’t imagine wanting to kiss someone who smelled like butts. But there are other things that people smoke and pot heads don’t always make the best hubbies. What was cute at 21 isn’t so adorable at 35. Gambling: This is an addiction like any other. If a person doesn’t want to get help, then sometimes it may be best to end it before debt, fighting, and financial ruin take it down anyway. Overspending: This is a big one. No one wants to be with someone who can’t stop shopping. Finances are the number one cause of divorce for many people and who can blame them? His credit could ruin yours. Cheating More Than Once: This one is obvious. Maybe it could be forgiven in certain circumstances, but not more than once. Abuse: This one is obvious too, but a lot of people miss it. If he hits you one time, leave. Period. End of story. No man should ever hit a woman. Of course, physical abuse isn’t the only kind of abuse, but people in love typically don’t abuse one another. If they do, it’s not love. Unwillingness to Work on Things: The reality is, most of these things CAN be fixed, assuming both sides admit there is a problem. Barring that, marriages will fail. There has to be a willingness to work on what needs to be worked on. |
I want to buy a new phone, but have been caught in the dilemma of choosing between a screentouch or a button phone. So which would you prefer in you 're in my shoes and why? Personally, i would like a button phone but it seems that the ish thing is now screentouches. |
zeem_bab: I work and live in J'borg. For some of us exparts living in SA, the burden of being a Nigerian is enormous. Simply because our kinsmen are at the fore front of drug dealing and many other social vices. Much that I condemn the act of these people, I think they have the right within the ambit of law to do whatever they deem neccesary to get rid of whatever constitute threat to their community.u work and live in J'borg, but Ade lives in Sandton. Thats quite impressive |

s Few hours ago, a female 300 level student of federal university of technology minna Niger state and her boyfriend from the Niger state collage of education almost committed suicide. She drank from a bottle of the popular insecticide called “sniper” otherwise known as “otapiapia” She did this to prove her innocence to her boyfriend after he accused her of sleeping around. The guy caught her with another dude in a disturbing position at mobil junction. Amenbovillage gathered that, he refused to answer her calls. She wrote a text to him suggesting that there was no life for her without him and that she was going to kill herself. It became serious when the guy rushed to her house in fright and found that she had swallowed half of the poison in the bottle, an amount that should be able to wipe out a colony of cockroaches. Here is the unbelievable part. Now you’d expect our hero AKA Mr boyfriend to save his damsel by rushing her to the hospital with tears in his eyes while the romantic theme music plays in the background…but that didn’t happen, we heard that he took the left over poison and poured it down his gullet into his own stomach. This poison is expected to kill the stomach cells, then diffuse into the blood stream and de-oxygenate the blood and kill the brain bit by bit; slow painful death! By miracle they survived. They are both alive and receiving treatments. This reminds me of Romeo and Juliet |
