Orikinla:
Who says Nigerian writers after Soyinka and Achebe are not better?
Literary scholars are rating the quality of Helon Habila's prose than Achebe's.

Why and how did Achebe and Soyinka become popular?
The circumstances of their pre-colonial and post-colonial era are different from our own period.

Personally, Achebe has not impressed me since his last good novel, "Arrow of God".
Achebe has only two classic novels. The others are just okay.
Ben Okri has written better and greater novels.

Do you know that Chinua Achebe is still sulking since 1986, because Wole Soyinka won the Nobel Prize when he thought he should have won it?

For what?
Achebe's literature cannot stand the literary corpus of Wole Soyinka.

Achebe is now doing all things possible to make the Nobel Prize Committee give him the Nobel Prize. That is why he has been in America all these years.

Achebe is just living on his past glory on "Things Fall Apart".

He wrote the novel as a young man of 28 in 1958.
And since then, that is all the world knows about him?
I am very disappointed.
Orikinla, I don't know why you regard Achebe with disdain. I have seen several posts of your that say things similar to this one. You are entitled to your opinion, but that does not mean you should try sullying the old man's reputation with allegations of lobbying et al (justified of otherwise). For God's sake give the man his dues. Even if it was true that he has written only one or two good novels, that is more than billions of people on this earth have done.

After all is said and done, the man has achieved something and many people like me who were born long after he wrote a lot of his books know him and are familiar with his works. His works shall live long after he is dead and gone. I shall not purport to equate him with Soyinka, but there are some records that Achebe has broken and which Soyinka hasn't.

PLEASE LET US GIVE HONOUR TO WHOM HONOUR IS DUE.

Hello All. I'm an amateur writer / jack of some trades. In clear layman's language I designed a website on which I put some of my work. I don't know if people would mind checking it out and telling me what they think about my style. Please -- I welcome all sorts of comments even if they're downright insulting.

I'm impervious to stinging remarks but I view them constructively -- if you feel my writing is shoddy, by all means tell me, and don't forget to include ways you think I can improve.

Oops I nearly left the site out in the end -- you can find it at http://books.zatechcorp.com
. My e-mail is private@azuka.zatechcorp.com. I'm waiting to hear from you wink.
@ Zahymaka,

I don't say this often, but I think one or two of your stories are really good though a little too short.  You hold some promise mate. Keep up the writing and try to get you stuff published either collectively or individually as part of one of those short stories anthologies that get published.

Well done.

But seriously SMC - our money can not buy recognition, are you sure? I mean even your "big three" recognises us very well. They've been looking up at us for two years now. Every club in europe and the world knows who we are. And yes even you do, thats why you are here in the first place.
@ Somze, your problem like a lot of Naija people, is that you like quoting words in isolation and constructing/interpreting them in a way that will suit your purpose. I never said that cHELLsea was not recognised, I said (and I repeat for the avoidance of doubt) that cHELLsea's "money can NEVER buy you the respect and recognition you so desperately crave". I liken your club(cHELLsea) to Abacha (i.e. rich, powerful, possibly envied a little, easily recognisable but still detested, not remotely popular and definitely not respected in the least). The recognition cHELLsea has is not the one it craves, so PLEASE.

So abeg keep your rantings to yourself because it is only in your dreams that any of the big three clubs will "look up" to cHELLsea. lipsrsealed lipsrsealed lipsrsealed lipsrsealed lipsrsealed angry angry angry

It is funny how bitter the LOSERS sound. No matter how much you rant on like madmen, the truth is when it comes down to it clubs are celebrated by the silverware they have won over the years and in this regard, the three GREATEST English clubs are -

(1) Liverpool;
(2) Manchester United; and
(3) Arsenal
(In precisely that order).

There are only TWO teams who ever since being promoted to the top flight of English football have NEVER been relegated. These are -

(i) Arsenal; and
(ii) Everton.

Facts and figures DO NOT lie. The big teams know themselves, cHELLsea has never been in the heavyweight club. Winning two premiership titles in over FIFTY YEARS does not make you a success story and until you face up to this fact, you will continue to wallow in your small pond with your mates like Westham and Charlton.

All you cHELLsea lunatics can continue to delude yourselves. You money can NEVER buy you the respect and recognition you so desperately crave. In this sport, Pedigree comes with age, tradition and consistent success. IT CAN NEVER BE BOUGHT. END OF STORY.

Orikinla:
SMC,
The process is cumbersome and I just want a publisher that can increase the mileage of my writings. Most of the requirements are not applicable to a writer in Nigeria, such as SSN, EIN, or TIN.

I have an attorney, but I won't bother her.

They asked for my agent and manager.

I am my own agent and manager.

I just want to be published by a notable publisher, because the major publishers like Random House and Jonathan Cape have the network to attract top flight literary critics and reviewers.
We don't have all these in Nigeria.

I am trying to learn how their system works. How their books sell in millions.
I don't want to wait for 20 years to sell millions of copies.
At this stage, I'd like to say that based on what you have written above, I think the title of this thread is quite premature. Nevertheless, let me give you some free friendly advice. You will be committing financial/commercial and intellectual suicide if you decide to go through the process without having one expert or the other oversee things. I do not know how involving your solicitor will be "bothering" her, as surely this is her job. It is very important that you have her check the contract out especially as you say that you neither have a manager nor an agent.  You say that you want to learn how the western publishing system works, anyone worth their salt will tell you that it is a very bad idea for the author to act alone without professional advice. Remember you will be coming against people/establishments that have a great legal team going over everything and they can smell an easy target a mile off.

Talk to your solicitor, if it is an issue regarding her remuneration, you can come to an agreement with her as to gradual payment or payment when you receive your royalty. This may end up being an investment that will save you tons of money or which will prevent you from signing away your sweat.

At the end of the day, it is your work and your decision so you can do as you please. All I can say is think carefully before you act. Wishing you the best.

I got three rejection slips and then the same American publishers accepted my childhood recollections of the Nigerian civil war and the publishers will give me 40% of the royalties if I don't give the story to another publisher.

I have given them the rights to the print, audio, video and film rights to the true life story of a Biafran child.

I won't mention the title for security reasons, because the title alone is a best seller.

This is a major literary break through not only for me, but for Nigerian literature.

The story is from my yet to be published 480 pages novel, Man of the Earth.
I believe Congratulations are in order!!! Hopefully, we will be seeing your book on the shelves everywhere. grin

For your sake, I hope you have not signed away all rights to the book, especially exclusive movie rights because if the book is as good as you say it is, somebody somewhere might be interested. As a lawyer, I'd advice you to read the contract carefully (especially the small print) and make sure that your solicitor goes through every documentation on the matter.

PS: Your attempt to be a whistle blower on Hints did not pan out, because you choose to direct your grievances towards the same medium, that you claimed were perpetrating the plagiarism scandal. What were you expecting? That they would publish your rebuttal? I doubt it, especially, when some of those stories were their meal ticket. An alternative would have been to write to other media houses, to expose Hints magazine. I am sure, your response would have been given attention from other competing media houses. There was one magazine called Akapa's top Magazine that published ludicrous claims about Michael Jackson having a Nigerian girlfriend, and all sorts of stories. He was exposed by some magazines like Classique, after their journalist(s) revealed that those pictures were lifted from Ebony magazine. The magazine eventually went out of business.
.

FYI, I was not attempting to be a whistle blower, I just wanted them to know they were not fooling all their readers and maybe a little apology [ridiculous I know now but I was only in my early teens]. I remember Apata's magazine too, back then it claimed that the song 'Liberian Girl' was originally 'Nigerian Girl'. I remember reading that story till this very day

ASS-NAL? You would have mentioned it earlier and i would not have bothered replying. You are just sad that your trophy cabinet has been empty for the past two seasons and you want to pick on your more successfull london rivals.

I said premiership so i want even reply to your irrelevant history lessons. But that Arsenal are our leaders is just laughable. They've done 3, we've done 2 (BACK TO BACK). They've won Fa cups so have we, and carling and cup winners(when it was still on).

Yes our coach moans (sometimes i get tired of him talking) but ferguson is far worse if you know your history and he always gets refs support but your Wenger fights (remember Alan Pardew?) and teaches his team to do dsame (do i need to mention examples?)

I can assure you, it would take a far much longer period for Wenger to claim he has built a team (out of his warring youngsters - 3 years and counting by the way) than for us to win the Champions League (thank God you qualify for next season without food-poisoning another club).

Carling cup is a cup love it or hate it. And remember 2 seasons ago we beat you in the final for the em "bournvita cup". All you have is luck. Pedigree? Trash. Luck helped you through Barca, you had an easy PSV and your first real test ends in penalty. Class? You have only one tournament to contend with and you rest 8 main players on the weekend. You have lost both home and away to all top the big 4 teams in england except chelsea at anfield thanks to injuries.

I can't deny your supremacy thanks to your European trophy cabinet but i'll be sippin bournvita from my favorite cup and maybe the FA too while you go ahead to loose the final.

PS You would always look up to us in the Premier league.
FYI, I am not a Liverpool fan (I am a Gunner). I just currently support ANY team at all over cHELLsea. And regarding your off the cuff remark about Liverpool looking up to cHELLsea in the premiership, it shows the extent of your ignorance because Liverpool has won the league cup 18 times (more than any other club I must add) and just because it was not called 'Premier League' then does not matter as that is just the title but does not affect the form. If your argument is that the 'Premier League' started in 1992, then Man-U and Arsenal are definitely your leaders.

Whether Liverpool fall at the final or not. They have reached that stage several times. A stage your sorry team can only dream about. WEEP NOT CHILD. Your time may come someday [in the next 100 years maybe].  grin grin grin grin
