Hmmm ..... |
Rape happens everywhere, on a daily basis and
a lot of people have come to believe that it was
their fault they were raped.
There are widely held beliefs (myths) about rape,
which not only adds to the pain of the victim
but can also put others at risk of same crime.
In many societies, people have false beliefs
about what rape is and what causes it. It is
easier to blame the victim, believing that he or
she must have done something to deserve being
raped.
No one deserves to be raped and victims should
not be blamed for the offender’s behavior. It is a
crime to sexually assault anyone and the blame
lies solely on the perpetrator.
Hopefully, the common myths about rape listed
below, will help someone protect his or herself
from false beliefs. 1. Women incite rape : Sometimes, you hear some men say they were seduced by the victims. How does a woman seduce you to rape her? Rape is the responsibility of the rapist alone and he has no excuse. 2. A married man can’t rape his wife : Sex should be consensual and if it is not, it is rape. Sex without consent is always rape, no matter what the circumstances. In Nigeria, most people will argue that a married cannot rape his wife because he has a right to her body whenever he wants. The idea that a man can’t rape his wife suggests married women do not have a right to say no to sex as do married women. If a woman says no, then her husband should respect her decision. 3. Rape is an impulsive, spontaneous act: The truth of the matter is that a vast majority of rapes are carefully planned. The rapist would have mapped out his plan and seize the opportunity when it presents itself. 3. Rape only happens to indecently dressed women : Some people believe women dressed in revealing clothes are the only ones who get raped and are to blame for it. Just because a woman is skimpily dressed or exposing parts of her body does not always mean that she is sending out a signal that she is available for sex. No person, irrespective of what they are wearing deserves to be raped Anyone can be raped, no matter what you are wearing, be it a baby in diapers, a grandma in wrapper or a nun fully covered. Ones dressing has no bearing on who the rapist chooses to attack. 4. Women say ‘No’ when they really mean ‘Yes’ : Nobody enjoys being forced to do things they don’t want. No man, woman, or child enjoys being raped. It is an assault, which can have a lasting trauma on the victim. People should learn to respect other people’s decisions. When she says NO, she really means NO. If you force her, then it is rape and you have no justification. 5. Men can’t be raped : Most people believe that it is only women who get raped. Just like women, men can also be raped. Because they are seen as strong, doesn’t mean they can’t be overpowered and forced into having sex. 6. The best way to get over rape is to act like it didn’t happen : Some people believe the best way a rape victim can get over the incident is to forget it happened and move on with their lives. Most of the time, talking about a problem helps a lot. In the case of rape, talking about it might just be what the victim needs to recover from trauma. However, the victim should not be forced to talk about it before they are ready. 7. You want it because you didn’t struggle : Some men believe if a woman does not struggle hard enough then she wants it. Sometimes, she knows her struggling would yield no result so she resigns herself to fate. Whether she struggles or not, if she has said no, then let her be. Don’t have satisfy your sexual desires and have your way just because she didn’t struggle hard enough. No one asks to be sexually assaulted. Everyone has the right to choose if, when and with whom he or she has sex. Nothing justifies the actions of a rapist. Opportunity is the most important factor determining when a given rapist will rape. |
The CHURCH and the WORLD! I have not been in the church for a long time.... I was not there on the day of Pentecost... I was not there when Brother Stephen had to endure the cruel stones of angry religious people who were mad at his bitings words... I was not present when the church rose in unison to save the head of Peter who was already in the dungeon of Herod Agrippa 2 who had silence the first son of Zebedee among the twelve... I was not among the congregation that listened as elders read from the handwritings of Paul, Peter or John... I have not been in the church for a long time! BUT!!! I have been in the church for some time. Long enough to see the era when the world was different from the church. I saw the days when the world looked at the church with RESPECT and REVERENCE. I saw the days when "BORN AGAIN" experience was the SINCERE BRIDGE through which men cross from the world to the church. I saw the days of "SU" revival when all truly converted people were so labelled by the world. I saw the days when men respond to altar calls ● NOT WITH CHEWING GUMS in their mouths but with TEARS in their eyes broken and truly submissive before the altar of God. I have not been in the church for a long time! I have not been in the church for a long time. BUT!!! I saw the days when MEN OF GOD were ● not MEN OF GOLD. I saw the days when Reverends were not ● LAUGHING STOCKS (FABLES) in the society but men given the honour of the God they truly represent. I saw the days when men went to church to meet preachers and ● NOT ENTERTAINERS. I saw the days when the pulpit was not a place for ● COMIC RELIEFS or centers of ● BUSINESS DISCUSSIONS but God's holy altars from where holy fire proceeded to consume evil works in men's lives. I saw the days the Spirit of God would expose the secret evils of men when they came to worship and men would not dare come to His presence with SINS NOT YET REPENTED. I saw the days when the church was a centre of transformation and God's workshop where men's lives were fabricated and MOLDED AFTER HIM. I have not been in the church for a long time. I have not been in the church for a long time. BUT!!! I saw the days when churches were not ● BUSINESS CENTRES and ● HUMAN EMPIRES. I saw the days when humility was the hallmark of Christian service and men of God were contented with that SIMPLE LIFE OF CHRIST and will not hoodwink their hungry congregation to pay through their noses for the ● LUXURY and EXTRAVAGANCE of PULPIT BUSINESS MEN. I saw the day when ● COLLECTION OF MONEY was never a means for motivating God to answer prayers. I saw days when men pray lifting holy hands and ● NOT 1000 Naira notes/packs of 200 Rand notes/£50 notes in prayer meetings. I saw days when men of God were empowered by the Holy Spirit to raise men and not trained by godless ● MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKERS to raise offerings. I saw the days when Jesus was the centre of all messages, heaven was the centre of all focuses and HOLINESS was the CENTRE of all CHRISTIAN CHARACTER. I have not been in the church for a long time! I have not been in the church for a long time! HONESTLY, I don't know for how long I will remain in the church on this side of eternity. NAY, I do not know for how long the church will remain before the harvest of her Lord. BUT, But my heart bleeds for the modern day church. Oh the church of the computer age. Nay, the church of the ICE age. The church where men play more than pray. The church where holiness is a denominational doctrine. The church where those who speak the truth are extremists and biased! I weep for the modern day church as I see SELF ADVERTS and miracle hawking in the name of ministry. I weep as I see the church married to the world and the world enjoying the driver's seat of the church. I weep when I see a church that is a million miles wide but less than a meter deep. Although I have not been in the church for a long time, I weep brethren for what I see the church turning to in my generation. I weep because my children and their generation do not see what I saw in the days past. I have not been in the church for a long time! I have not been in the church for a long time. BUT!!! I notice everyday that the Bible is the same in every age and generation. I have read times without number what is written in 1 Peter 2:9: "BUT YE ARE A CHOSEN GENERATION, A ROYAL PRIESTHOOD, AN HOLY NATION, A PECULIAR PEOPLE; THAT YE SHOULD SHEW FORTH THE PRAISES OF HIM WHO HATH CALLED YOU OUT OF DARKNESS INTO HIS MARVELLOUS LIGHT". I keep wondering the peculiarity of the church in today's world. Well, I have not been in the church for a long time! I have not been in the church for a long time. BUT!!! I have been there long enough to know that the Foundation of God still stands sure and also long enough to know that the Lord still knows those who are His and everyone that is named with Christ must depart from iniquity. *I have been in the church long enough to understand that not everyone that calls Jesus Lord will enter His heavenly home. For said He "MANY WILL SAY TO ME IN THAT DAY, LORD, LORD, HAVE WE NOT PROPHESIED IN THY NAME? AND IN THY NAME HAVE CAST OUT DEVILS? AND IN THY NAME DONE MANY WONDERFUL WORKS? AND THEN WILL I PROFESS UNTO THEM, I NEVER KNEW YOU: DEPART FROM ME, YE THAT WORK INIQUITY" (Mat 7:22-23). Beloved, ● how long have you been in the church and ● what gospel have you been made to believe? I hope it is not one that will put your eternity in serious jeopardy? Think on these things and heed the warning of God from a sincere believer. I have not been in the church for a long time but I desire to be with the Master; my loving Saviour and my Lord throughout eternity. |

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
yesterday wrote off the economy, accusing the
Buhari administration of destroying it since
assuming office on May 29.
In a statement by its National Publicity
Secretary, Chief OlisaMetuh, the party said the
“shambolic state” of the economy within the
period represented the worst in the nation’s
contemporary history.
The situation, the party said, was a fallout of
uncertainty created by the government’s
inability to chart a clear-cut economic policy,
adding that the matter is worsened by abuse
of regulations, and flagrant violation of
constitutional provisions.
According to the PDP, official reports showed
that the last three months under the APC-led
government had brought a sudden decline in
the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), with
attendant losses and hardship to the citizens.
The government, it said, embarked on
propaganda of imaginary achievements, in
addition to attempts to foist harsh economic
regime to cover its ineptitude.
The statement reads: “If not for crass
incompetence or a possible ulterior motive to
subjugate Nigerians for selfish reasons, what
else explains the adamant stance of this
administration in running a government
without the statutory components of a full
cabinet and precise fiscal policy direction,
even when the negative consequences of this
strange totalitarian approach are taking
serious toll on the economy and the polity in
general?
“Whereas the APC led government is busy
with its propaganda of imaginary
achievements, official reports from the
National Bureau of Statistics show that that
the economy is being grounded with Nigeria’s
real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) plunging
with about 2.35%, while job creation has
dropped by 69 percent.
“In the last three months under an inept and
poorly coordinated APC-led government, our
nation’s economy, which before now, held the
record as the largest in Africa and one of the
fastest growing in the world, suddenly
plummeted as officially evidenced in the lull in
the capital and money market sectors which
have lost billions of naira; spiral rate of
inflation, and stagnation in domestic and
foreign direct investments, with investors
scared away due to the uncertainty arising
from lack of economic direction and apparent
confusion in the polity.
“This is in addition to the halt in infrastructure
development projects in most parts of the
country with associated massive job loss,
closure of auxiliary small scale businesses, low
purchasing power of citizens, among other
negatives that have bedevilled the economy
since the coming of this government, despite
the much APC celebrated promissory notes
from the President’s diplomatic shuttles,
especially his recent visit to the United States.
“Nigerians would recall that we recently raised
alarm on the negative consequences of the
recent foreign exchange transaction
restrictions, wherein this government is
making it impossible for honest Nigerians to
engage in free trade and regulate their
personal activities as guaranteed by the
constitution.
“We also warned about the consequences of
foisting a communist economic regime with
bans and clampdowns on free trade and the
freedom of Nigerians to freely open and
operate domiciliary accounts as provided by
the Foreign Exchange Monitoring And
Miscellaneous Provisions Act, otherwise known
as Decree No. 17 of 1995 and wondered
whether the nation was not heading back to
the era of import duty licenses and regulation
of commodity prices.
“Only recently, Fitch Rating, which, under the
previous administration, affirmed Nigeria’s
long-term foreign and local currency IDRs as
well as senior unsecured bond and Short-term
foreign currency IDR ratings respectively at
‘BB”s, had now alerted that Nigerian banks
and other businesses in the sector would be
adversely affected by the economic slowdown
occasioned by the incompetence of the
President Buhari-led APC government.
“This is more so as the absence of ministers
have left the coordination of important
government policies in ministries, departments
and agencies in tatters, while creating
loopholes for overzealous persons claiming
closeness to the President to invade the
system for inflated concessions, allocations,
jobs and other financial sleazes, including
misleading the President for approvals outside
his limits.
“We invite Nigerians to note that whereas the
Presidency has gone ahead to unilaterally
deplete the funds inherited in the Excess Crude
Account (ECA) and other government savings,
as well as reports of engaging in discussions
with the World Bank for loans without recourse
to appropriate statutory arms of government,
no corresponding improvement has been
witnessed in the economy. Indeed, we are
worried that the damage already done in the
last 90 days may linger with us for years to
come.
“Nigerians are no longer in doubt that they
have been scammed with long list of empty
promises which the APC government has no
intentions or capacity to fulfil. The free meals
for school children, allowances for discharged
Corps Members, N5,000 monthly allowance for
indigent Nigerians, free houses, bringing the
dollar to the same value as the naira and
other bogus promises for which they were
voted into power, have become streams of
mirage.
“Instead, what we continue to witness is the
outworn excuse of clearing the so-called
Augean Stable, loud propaganda and artful
move to appropriate the achievements made
by the PDP-led administration; such as the
effort in ending polio, the improvement in
power supply, the reopening of the refineries,
among others which are a dividend from
numerous investments by the previous
administrations.
“Finally, we state categorically that Nigerians
are becoming tired and weary of the diversions
and propaganda of creating imaginary
achievements, dramatisation of routine
appointments, offering mundane excuses for
crass incompetence and orchestrating a
selective and witch-hunt of anti-corruption
crusade” |

Everybody has one thing or another to share when
it comes to love and relationship but not all
advice are meant to be followed. People give
advice according to their experience but it will
not necessarily work for you the way it worked
for them.
Let us take a look at seven love advice that you
should think twice about: 1. Forgive and forget: Yes, forgiveness is a very important aspect of every relationship, but this is usually easier said than done, especially the part about forgetting. When you have been hurt, letting-go takes time and you never forget. A worried woman If you try to rush this process, you will end up finding that all you did was sweep everything under the carpet and soon after, things will only blow up in your face. Take your time, talk it out with your partner and do not rush so that when you do forgive, you forgive for real. 2. Love conquers all: Love conquers a lot of things, no doubt, but it does not conquer every single thing you will face in your relationship. With some issues, only patience, time and maturity or even a breakup will help you solve it. A lot of people are in relationships that are not working out simply because they stubbornly believe that just because they are in love, everything should be okay. You need to recognize the things that love is incapable of dealing with and work on them with what is needed. 3. Never go to bed angry: This advice is basically saying you must solve all problems and deal with every argument all within the day. Frankly, this is just impossible. Sometimes, some problems need time to be solved. Sometimes, all you need is a break, to sleep on your argument and get some much needed space for things to get better. If you have a time limit on all your fights, a lot of things will not be tackled and at the end of the day, you will say good night when you know you are not really at peace with yourself and your relationship. 4. Love hurts: Betrayal hurts, pain hurts, heartbreak hurts, but love is the one thing that should make you feel good. A lot of people repeat the “love hurts” mantra to themselves to justify being in a hurtful relationship. True love should never bring about pain and despair. Yes, there will be stormy waters, but true love should be the only light during this time. 5. Love is blind: Finding someone you love should never be a decision to be made blindly. You cannot go through the true challenges of any relationship if you entered into it blindly. 5. Money does not matter: Money is never everything, but it sure matters. You cannot have a strong relationship without having some sort of financial stability. You might not have it all, but in a relationship, you have to both be content with where you are with the belief that things can and will get better. Pretending money is not an issue will only lead to each of you feeling discontent and not being able to discuss it or find a solution. 6. True love is forever: There will be times in your relationship when you are not even sure you love your partner. There will be times you feel numb or unhappy with them but this does not mean what you have is not true love. Love ebbs and flows. Sometimes you love them so much you cannot imagine life without them, and sometimes, you just want to run away, but underneath it all, you both share a bond that will never be broken. That is love. 7. Follow your heart: Your heart is important in determining what you feel for someone but you should not make all your love decisions based on how you feel. It is important that you use your brains and intuition to also determine whether or not someone will make the best fit for you. Naij.com Home Page |
The Lagos State Task Force on Environmental
and Special Offences Enforcement Unit
yesterday raided some black spots at the
famous Oshodi in Lagos arrested 223
suspected miscreants, including nine under-
aged and five women.
The team which stormed Oshodi in the early
hours, also removed illegal structures erected
by recalcitrant street hawkers and roadside
traders around the market.
Chairman of the Task Force, Olubukola Abe, a
Superintendent of Police, said the raid was a
follow-up to the sensitisation visit to the
market by officials of the taskforce a week
ago, as well as the stakeholders meeting
organised by the Task Force to warn all street
hawkers and traders to desist from carrying
out their illegal activities around the market.
He said most of the suspected miscreants
were arrested between 2am and 4am on the
Oshodi Bridge between Anthony and Charity
bus, stations.
Among those arrested were nine under-aged
boys, 189 adults and five women.
The Task Force boss expressed concern about
the under-aged boys who were out at such
‘ungodly hour,’ urging parents and guardians
to monitor their children to prevent them being
used as tools by criminals.
On the removal of shanties and extensions, the
chairman said the state government had no
choice but to enforce the “zero tolerance” for
street-trading rule since the traders had
remained recalcitrant and the taskforce would
not fold its arms and watch such illegality
continue unabated.
He warned that the exercise would be
extended to other parts of the state where
such act was being perpetuated.
According to him, the Oshodi exercise would
be sustained.
A trader Bola Olakunle decried the Task Force
action, saying most of them were petty
traders.
“They have demolished the shops we rented at
N500. We voted them in yet they are making
life unbearable for us. They have been here
since 20am, we did not have N8 million to rent
a shop. At least, we do pay tax. There are lot
of troubles in this Oshodi, the poor cannot
afford such huge amount to rent a shop, we
are all hustling. They should consider us. They
should allow us allow to trade freely, we have
children to take care of with the little we are
making here,” she said.
Another trader, Aliyat Omolayo told The Nation
that their goods had been taken away to
Alausa.
She pleaded with the state government to
return their goods.
Omolayo said: “They were moving from one
place to another, goods were seized and taken
to Alausa. Most of us don’t have money to
buy shops because they are expensive, and
the little we have, are being taken away by the
government. This is where we make money to
feed our children and send them to schools;
we shouldn’t be treated like this.”
A distraught Aduke described the task force’s
action as unacceptable.
She said: “The thing they did this morning
was extraordinary; people were crying because
of it; does the government want them to
steal? The government should provide
affordable shops for us to sell our goods. The
reason why touts are everywhere is due to
lack of social amenities and the poor are not
treated well.”
It would be recalled that Governor Akinwunmi
Ambode enjoined traders to immediately
vacate the right of way to ease free flow of
vehicular movement in the area.
The Governor, who walked through the stretch
of Brown Street, Oshodi, said the road was
germane to the economy of the area.
“Nobody should trade on this road henceforth
and stop spreading your market on the road. I
have seen what you experience on daily basis,
that is why I took it upon myself to walk
through Brown Street and I can assure you
that work would commence within the next
seven days,”, Ambode said. |

It’s the middle of the rainy season
when the harvesting of new yam tubers is
celebrated. Naij.com ‘s contributor Ifeyinwa Nzeka
tells us 10 interesting facts about yam, including
traditional practices attached with the fleshy
tuber.
As the new yam comes into season and various
Nigerian ethnic groups at home and in diaspora
herald the harvest with New Yam festivals, here
are ten fun facts about yam and its harvest in
Nigeria! 1. Nigeria is by far the world’s largest producer of yam accounting for over 70% of the world’s production, making Nigeria the “Yam Lord” of the world. Nigeria, with its over 250 ethnic groups and distinct languages and despite its diverse culture share similarities especially when it comes to food. 2. Yam should in truth be Nigeria’s national food; as in, it should be served at state banquets in the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Why? Because yam is grown all over Nigeria, from Abuja to Benue to Bayelsa to Onitsha to Ondo to name a few. Yam is indeed the universal food language all of us Nigerians understand. The importance and popularity of yam in our diet cannot be over emphasized. 3. The New Yam Festival (also called Ijesu, Iwaji, Iri ji, Ima Ji, Obiora, Ofala, Leboku or Orureshi) is celebrated almost all over Nigeria in various ways. The festival is celebrated at different times within the various ethnic groups and communities both at home in Nigeria and in diaspora from August until October every year. The New Yam Festival is a celebration of the harvest, the thanksgiving, the culmination of a year and the start of another. 4. Die hard traditionalists will not touch new yam until after the New Yam Festival. Once the new yam is out, food vendors can often be seen labeling dishes containing new yam “new yam and beans” or “yamarita with new yam” “asaro with new yam” for example so that customers who are waiting till after the New Yam Festival in their various ethnic groups can just walk on by and eat something else. This is particularly common among chiefs and titled men and women. So remember that when next you are entertaining at a time when the new yam is just coming out, ask your guest if he or she has started eating the new yam. 5. In some parts of the country, during the period of the New Yam festival, some events including burials cannot be held until after the period of celebrations which could be as little as one day and up to two months. 6. With the arrival of new yam, just as with any food that comes into season, yam prices crash to rock bottom. This means that for many Nigerians today, asking that the “rituals” of the New Yam festival be observed before they begin to buy and eat new yam is like story for the gods! This however doesn’t take away from the importance and significance of the festival. 7. Yam is a very extravagant vegetable to grow. Yes, yam is a tuberous root vegetable! Each tuber requires a full square yard of land, which is a huge demand. So biko, when next you pick up that tuber of yam, remember how much of a “king” crop it is because that yam in your hand, has had a full square yard of space for itself for almost a year. 8. In the olden days, in some parts on Nigeria, wealth was primarily determined by the size of one’s yam barn and the number of yams in the barn. In the pre-colonial Igbo land, yam was so much respected that a special title of king of yams (Ezeji) signifies an elevation to a special status in the community. To qualify for the title at the time, one must be a very energetic farmer with outstanding barns of yam. A common question asked by a bride’s father when a young man signifies his intention to marry his daughter is “how big is your yam barn?” In those days, the bigger the yam barn, the better for the suitor, as it means that he is prosperous and can take adequate care of the bride. Yam porridge. 9. Before the advent of cocoa, yam was the major cash crop of the people Yam still plays a major role in our lives both as cash crop and staple food. 10. Professor Chinua Achebe of blessed memory in the novel “Things Fall Apart” has a hilarious description of the hype that surrounds the New Yam Festival. He says: “Men and women, young and old, looked forward to the New Yam Festival because it began the season of plenty- the New Year. Furthermore, “The pounded yam dish placed in front of the partakers of the festival was as big as a mountain. People had to eat their way through it all night and it was only during the following day when the pounded yam “mountain” had gone down that people on one side recognized and greeted their family members on the other side of the dish for the first time.” |

A fugitive radical preacher Ahmad al-Assir, also referred to as an “ISIS leader”, was over the weekend arrested at a Lebanese airport while attempting to flee to Nigeria using fake travel documents. The story generated multiple reactions, fears and allegations among Nigerians who still remember the dangerous claim made by Boko Haram earlier this year. Recall that the dreaded sect pledged allegiance with the richest and one of the most powerful terrorist groups in the world: Islamic State (ISIS) . Ahmad al-Assir, the eloquent speaker The recent development has revived these fears, which were confirmed by a source who disclosed: “We are worried because Boko Haram has pledged loyalty to ISIS. And the botched trip of al-Assir is reawakening because it has confirmed Boko Haram’s claim.” We have gathered the most notable facts about al-Assir, his criminal activities and allegations posed against him, and about the situation in general. Specifically, we ask what he has to do with ISIS. 1. Who is al-Assir and why was he declared wanted? Two years ago he was a charismatic preacher vigorously speaking against Hezbollah (the military organization and political party dominating Lebanese affairs), which sought to limit his influence in the country. His followers often had clashes with Hezbollah proxies. In June 2013 al-Assir’s followers were involved in a gunfight at an army checkpoint and killed at least 18 soldiers. The army insisted the bloody clash had started with the provocation of the cleric’s supporters at the site. 2. Disappearance and charges Following the incident he mysteriously disappeared leaving his forces on the verge of defeat. The Lebanese military judge accused al-Assir of having formed armed groups that attacked an institution of the state, the army, killed officers and soldiers, took explosive materials and light and heavy weapons and used them against the army. Military prosecutors sought the death penalty for him. 3. Purported links with ISIS It is believed that the preacher has ties with the group. The information is, however, unconfirmed. He was once referred to as the “emir” of the ISIS branch in Lebanon. Interestingly, it is mostly the Nigerian sources that headlined the story using the “ISIS leader”. 4. Two years later, he tried to flee, unsuccessfully The cleric not only obtained a fake passport, but also changed his look in an attempt to board a plane in Beirut en route to Nigeria. However, the plan was uncovered. Changed his look to escape from Lebanona. 5. Destination – Nigeria He was arrested with a forged Palestinian travel document on him. However, Nigerians wondered how he had managed to obtain the Nigerian visa. And actually whether is was a real one. 6.
