Greetings all. So for the past few weeks I've been searching the Agriculture section to see if there is any thread dedicated to Layers Poultry Farmers, but I found none. So I'm opening this thread for the purpose. Please this thread is strictly for Layers Poultry discussion. Please nobody should derail the thread. Thanks and God bless you.
The main stuff I will like to discuss are:
1. Your personal experience as a poultry farmer. How long have you been into actual practice.
2. Percentage production you're able to achieve and how you are able to achieve it.
3. The brand of feed you're currently using, and if you have changed feed brands before, why did you make the change.
4. What type of housing system are you using, Battery cage, Deep litter or any other.
jidestroud: Going beautifully well. Apart from the every minute changes in prices of the feeds, I think every other thing is going according to projections. Hopefully, I will be uploading some pictures tomorrow.
Thanks for the inquiry.
Thanks for the update. The price of DOC has gone up too. The inflation in the country affect almost all commodities.
Please what is the price update for commercial pullets?

Good. God will see you through in the name of JESUS Christ.
PewpewS32: Hmmm... the road is long before this would happen. 1-2 years. Doing due diligence. Not my first time in a country such as Nigeria. But thank you, sound advice to visit first. Something I am planning to do.
Back in the days, after I have studied some particular topics very hard, and the lecturers refuses to set questions from the topics, and I'm unable to answer the required number of questions from the available questions. I will set questions for myself from those topics that I had studied hard and answer the questions. I don't care if the examiner will mark them or not, but it's always satisfying that I didn't not study those topics in vain and I didn't leave empty pages of answer scripts.
Please think very deep about this decision you're about to make, don't sell anything yet, probably come for a short visit first. Things are not how they seems to be. Except of course if God has instructed you to relocate to Nigeria, if not, think very deep before you leap.
Yes, I'm Canadian looking to semi-permanently move to Nigeria for ministry opportunity.
Reading online tells me I'll be fine, but would love to hear a local perspective.
I'll be selling my home, vehicles, furniture... everything and starting over in Nigeria (Lekki, Lagos area).
Everything sold and done I would be coming with around N450,000,000.00 to N500,000,000.00. I know this is a lot in Nigeria. For real, I know. What I would like to know is let's say I don't make any money whatsoever, how long will that last after paying for a 3 bdrm house, car, furniture etc there? Believe me, here in Canada this isn't that much... it's not below poverty, but also not rich either. (Middle Class).
JESUS Christ is the son of the Living God and He is my Lord and Saviour. No argument, no controversy. I will tell them the Truth and let them decide what they choose to believe.
I wish I got married at 25. Got married at 31, No regret at all, except I wish I had married 6 years earlier when I first met my wife, but who knows it may not turn out well, because those 6 years forged me into a more responsible man and my wife gained more emotional maturity too. I told her several times that I wish I married her earlier, but she always replied that I would have married a "baby" who is not mature emotionally. In all, God made the difference in our marriage and we're deeply grateful to God.

jidestroud: Nope. Omawunmi (the goat) as known no man. She purely a virgin.
Present Age (A year & 3months of age) Parent breed (A SR Father & a Sahel mother) Price: N35k gaskiya.
(Please Not for consumption Biko)
I will gladly buy this and add to my backyard farm. Can you please send to Akure? I will pay for the transport also. My only fear is, how will the goat safely reach Akure without any harm.
Jakumo: You should consider milking those goats and producing cheese to sell to supermarkets. Nobody is producing goat milk in Nigeria currently, but in the USA Nigerian pygmy goats are highly regarded sources of goat's milk which is more nutritious than cow's milk. You are sitting on a gold mine, my brother, so MILK it for all it is worth.
Goats are worth FAR more valuable as milk suppliers than having them slaughtered for meat. I have 24 pygmy goats as I speak, but before I start milking them I will allow them all to have one birth before commencing to milk them after their second birth. I have both manual milk pumps and an electric milking machine ready to go when the time comes.
Please kindly make an update and tag me, when you start milking the goats. I'm in the process of building a goat pen at my farm, currently I have 7 goats at the backyard farm, which I plan to move to the main farm once the pen is completed. I'm interested in milking them.
Also where can I get the milking machine and any idea of the price for both manual and electric type?
ceaser: That model will definitely have power saving. If I'm to hazard a guess, I'll say you can get as low as 40 watts consumption at full power saving mode, give or take 5 watts
For you to confirm the details of the power saving capacity, you will need a watt meter. While it is plugged in to the wattmeter, note the consumption indicated at full blast and then the consumption at maximum power saving mode.
I think it sells for around 7k. You will need this vital device handy in your journey with solar energy.
ceaser: First thing, is the TV panel of Plasma, LCD, LED or OLED?
The types are improvements one over the other, generation after generation and so is also the power consumption improvements (sometimes significantly) from one generation to the other.
Midway into the LCD generation, manufacturers of panels and TVs have begun to include power saving options in their products so you can get much reduced consumption depending on your choice. You only need to sacrifice some brightness of the TV panel to acquire that reduced level of consumption and this option is usually in the picture settings.
By the generation of LED, this feature has gotten so much improvement because a LED panel in itself does not consume as much power as an LCD panel does, size for size, brightness for brightness. Then there is the added feature of power saving which further reduces the consumption to as much as 20% of the nameplate consumption. As is with LCD, you also need to sacrifice some brightness to acquire that. In modern TVs, other smart features like background operations, WiFi, Bluetooth etc may also be turned off temporarily to get much more power saving level, just like you would do with your mobile phones.
By OLED (called QLED in some products) generation, further improvements expectedly over LED has been developed.
So your 120 watts nameplate consumption 70 inch TV may end up consuming as little as 35w to 40w if you activate the power saving modes.
Solar power users are encouraged to procure power saving appliances and I have seen situations where users have decommissioned fully functioning appliances in favour of modern power saving counterparts. Yours truly is one of such people.
So again to my opening statement. Which of those TV panels is your own TV?
Thanks for your comment.
I don't know much about technical or electrical aspect of the TV. This is the full name: LG 70” UHD 4K Smart TV with AI ThinQ 70UN7380PVC
Actually, I now realized that wattage I saw was for audio, I guess that's the speaker wattage.
olopan: Recommended inverter size will be 3-3.5 KVA inverter but sadly this where all your information stops, as without the hour of their usage there is no way that your solar panel and batteries size can be effectively determined as you may end up with a system not properly sized due to the above.
If you can update your. A4. Paper with two column showing daily and night hours of usage then, your journey just dey start proper.
Thanks for your comment Sir. I'll update the paper, though the priority here are the workstations, and router charging, other won't be running for more than 4 hours per day, except maybe the TVs on weekends.
GloriousGbola: I think I have the same TV and I can tell you despite what is written, the wattage is definitely higher than that. I connect it to a ups and even with new batteries, max is five mins. Also it puts a noticeable strain on the gen. 3.5kva.
There is something slighty iffy about these fouani LG TVs - (maybe a unique naija spec) as their model numbers don't work.in Google, but that's another naija story.
Your zbook is an hp.workstation laptop. Should have a quadro gpu. That's why the charger is 200w.dl laptops with gpus (typically gaming or workstation) come with anything from 130 to 230 w chargers.
You're absolutely right, the TV draws lots of power from the generator whenever it's starting up. The wattage I saw was definitely wrong.
For the laptop, you're also right, it's a workstation.
FEGEITOK: Someone said that the wattage is suspect, so get a watt meter so you can be accurate.
About the fridge and freezer, they have starting current and running current. In plain English, when you turn on the fridge or freezer, it draws more current to start operating than it draws to keep operating.
That starting current draw can be 3 to 10 times the running current draw.
So let me repost what an internet resource I stumbled on said:
"As a general rule, the inverter you choose needs to be rated at 5 times the running current wattage of your refrigerator. In most cases, this will make sure the inverter can handle the running power of the refrigerator, and the surge power required to start."
So make sure you get these facts:
1. Continous power rating (Watts) 2. Surge power rating (Watts) 3. Input voltage (Volts)
Before you can conclude it is appropriately sized for your application
FEGEITOK: Can you get the wattage of these devices?
The more accurate the load, the more accurate the determination of the most appropriate inverter setup
Sir, I've checked the wattage. My calculations shows it's 1014.9 Watts altogether.
I'm surprised at the wattage of a few of the devices: Zbook laptop 200W (charger), I don't know it should be this high. Also, LG 70" UHD 4K is 20W, I was expecting this to be higher. So I'm confused, maybe I'm not checking the right info.
