Join Us: # PINternetFreedom Chat With Egghead Odewale (@eggheader) Topic: Online Surveillance Policy and Laws in Nigeria: Way forward? Internet surveillance is the monitoring of the online behaviour, activities, or other changing information usually of people and often in a surreptitious manner. It most refers to the observation of individuals or groups by governmental organizations. Surveillance may refer to observation from a distance by means of an electronic equipment such as CCTV cameras, or interception of electronically transmitted information such as internet traffic or phone calls. It may also refer to simple or relatively low technology methods such as human intelligence agents and postal interception. Online surveillance is currently being addressed, as the government has signified interest in carrying out surveillance on citizens. This is coming off even without a legal framework that can protect the rights of citizens, should this be abused. Nigeria currently has no Data privacy law, hence if online surveillance is carried out, this will be done at the detriment of the citizens right to internet freedom and data privacy. NCC, the regulatory body for Nigeria’s communications network is making plans towards creating a secondary regulation for the lawful interception of communications by security agencies. Join us at 2pm as we discuss Online Surveillance Policy and Laws in Nigeria with our guest Egghead Odewale on #PINternetFreedom Chat Egghead Odewale is male, Nigerian and holds a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) degree in Chemistry (with Polymer Science) from the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State. He also holds a National Diploma degree in Chemical Engineering Technology from the Federal Polytechnic, Bida in same state in the north central region of Nigeria. This young chemist has garnered a combination local and international work experiences in social and development work, spanning especially the West Africa sub-region. He has worked variously with regional institutions like the West African Civil Society Forum (WACSOF), the Economic Community of West African States and recently, the West African Bar Association as Programme Officer (Youth), Consultant (Youth and Students’ Affairs) and Integration and External Linkages Officer respectively He prides himself as a pan-Africanist has an excellent understanding of English, French and Yoruba languages. He also has a working knowledge of Arabic, Hausa, Portuguese and Spanish. |
Like I said Ealier, he is not doing Bad but He isn't perfect. Detractors should allow him concentrate. |
After Reading all comments here and digest, I perceived some sentiments, Hence it's important I make some facts cleared. Note:I don't know Prof. Edeoga from anywhere and don't intend to know for any reason. *I am currently serving in the Said institution and my comments here will based on facts and nothing else, I don't give a dqmn of who is interest is affected . *Prof. Edeoga of Recent have been facing challenges upon challenges which is in no way peculiar to Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike, especially in a community filled with intellectuals, challenges and counter challenges, inferiority complex among Profs and doctors, they keep beefing each other on who is superior and who have the command of the day. *Sincerely WE HEARD He was called for questioning but he his yet to be Tagged "guilty" of any offence and to the best of my knowledge, If court didn't label you guilty, no man can,Tinubu, El-Rufai and infact, Bukola Saraki have been invited and still influential in our society today. *Kudos to Efcc for waking up from slumber and living up to responsibility and I think this is in line with keeping public officers accountable for all spent and perceived cheat whole in office. *Kudos to President Muhammadu Buhari who brought about the change, hence the "JonahRIC" EFCC would still be sleeping by now but for the arrival of "CHANGE", it's a different story. *Prof. Edeoga is like anybody who may not be PERFECT just like Jesus, Until he left the sinful world before he was appreciated. *Edeoga is not Just a VC but a father (To his students (undergraduates and post Graduates) though, yet a leader and an administrator per Excellent. I admire him, but sometimes can be unfriendly to his followers though. (By the way, what is my own business) Smile. *I think his problem started from NOT compromising THE STANDARD with some "powers that be" , to loot heavily (if he had loot at all), but his undaunted stance landed him in this mess,Not just in financial aspect but also in admission of students and employment of staff. Thumb up for his courageous stance. *It's important I tell you that Notable projects(buildings Road inclusive and Facilities) are on in this school which some OLDER and NOTABLE universities in Nigeria are yet to dream OF GETTING in years for example The Almighty post graduate building(almost completed) , you need to see it. The indoor games structure, the micro finance bank, the Senate building, many lectures theatres, renovations, the fish pond which am yet to see it likes despite Been a graduate of Fisheries and hydrobiology in my alma mata, the just completed Hostels and many more, if we won't shy away from truth, this man deserves commendations (even if not a big one). * What of security and stability in the school academic calendar Haba! Even the older Nigeria institution like OAU, U. I, UNN et al find it difficult to Maintain school calendar without INTERRUPTION, and the interruption are caused either by Staff internal strike, then maybe cultist attack or students protest as the case maybe but to my daring surprise, I am yet to hear that there will be or there was a break or interruption in the calendar of this school, oh! you think it's rice and beans go to OAU as of NOW that you are reading, you wıll learn to appreciate little offered by this Stern looking man. (Smile). What of security, when last did you hear of cultist attack, rape, gangsterism and other anti-social activities that may endanger both students and staff lifes, OK ooo, you think it's banana and groundnut shebi Then go to Ekpoma, Absu and OOU, maybe u will Learn to give him a tiny kudos instead of none. *Who is talking of cars YES there are unused cars parked littering the school especially in the Chinua achebe complex and guest house but if not for mischievous of the poser (name intentionally withheld) THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT GREEN PLATE NUMBER should conspicuously SEEN on these cars, While I frown at the abandonment of these cars, it's should be CORRECTED to those that must have been mislead about the cars,They are not Edeoga personal cars or for his personal use. BESIDES has got a Prado jeep and Hilux for his official usage. And what cars are we talking here, Kia Picanto, Kia Rio and other cheap cars that Corpers like me will reject as a gift. The cars are suppose to serve as campus shuttle but why they are yet to be used, I don't know, which I frowned at. *Among other things I needed state here is the way he handle his staff, which may have also bring him unnecessary Efcc invitation, Sometimes Edeoga come to school (Admin Building) as early as 7:30 am, while strolling around on the walkways you will see a staff that are been paid for what they do, dragging legs to office at around 9:30am which is not just bad for the school but also is an insult on any organization not to talk of tertiary institutions. And whenever he vexed (which MAY be public insult, which I negate) for the LAZY staff, they retaliate and hence you see Efcc in the school Probing what is not (Smile) . If not for Edeoga friendliness to them, sacking of such staff isn't a crime TO ME. Like my Dad will always say "Time management is the soul of Business". *About the 60,000 naira, as a former unionist, I blame the shit(60000 accommodation fees) on the students union (toothless bulldog), the sole aim of every business man is to make profit, but the sole aim of pressure group is to save her members of exploitation but yet get the best of services. But here, the only time you know they have students 'union is during their Students' union week. Note : Senate sits to approve every payment of whatsoever into the university purse likewise withdrawal from the same, hence it's not a one-man decision, so Edeoga cannot be hold responsible for that. I love Edeoga style of leadership as testimonies both from people in the environment before my arrival and with what I saw with my own korokoro eyes, I have it in authority that he has really transform and still transforming the institution from the GLORIFIED SECONDARY SCHOOL to A UNIVERSITY that's it suppose to be, yet works are ongoing in virtually all strata of the school. I wish him the All the best as a person, but until "powers that be" in that school are rendered unless in that school, after Edeoga's tenure, the school may witness nothing good again. Concerned Onlooker. |

. To us this is a disservice and deliberate extreme partisanship to fight and dishonor Moremi even in death. There are lots of open and undesignated spaces across the state capital that could be used for the so called women centre. African Culture and value do forgive the dead and respect it even the more. We cannot fathom why Mr. Ayodele Fayose has chosen the path of war against the dead all in the name of partisan politics. Don’t we all belong here as sons and daughters of Ekiti Land sharing the same norms, values and the holistic cultural appreciation? We are gravely concerned. If she had indeed offended you please we are ready to appease your Excellency to stop and relocate the woman center to the state secretariat and not in the high civic and business centre of the state capital. The huge golden statue of the indefatigable MOREMI stands boldly right in front of the uncompleted Ultra Modern Aduni Olayinka Civic Centre started by your immediate predecessor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi the former governor of Ekiti State. Ironically there is already a more befitting women centre right inside the abandoned Civic centre. It pained us to the marrows that this edifice could be abandoned only to start from the scratch a mini women centre as you claimed, right on her very tomb. To us this is not honour but an honour slaughtered, on the stab of hatred, bitterness and quite un-Ekiti of extreme partisanship. Her tomb must not be a back yard phenomenon with a potential to be unkempt and overgrown with weeds. 8. The Fajuyi memorial park today has become a monument of tourism pedestals that everyone references with utmost regard. It all started the way Ekiti State Heroes Park took off and ultimately becomes cynosure of all eyes. The founding fathers of this great ideal are today captured in history as men of understanding whose initiative will continue to guide people on what is service to humanity. This is the ultimate essence of governance. Mr. Governor is therefore implored to have a second look at the personality of Late Aduni Olayinka who had served this state meritoriously, her place in history and circumstance of her death, the heroes park and the law that established it and of course its future potential and that a mini women centre heroes is not by all intent and purposes desirable in the park and on the tomb of the Late Deputy Governor. Ekiti State belongs to us all, sons and daughters irrespective of our divergent social and political inclination. It is an onerous task to keep, guide and constantly revitalize the dreams of our forebears to make Ekiti a united, progressing and prosperous land in which all should be proud of being indigenes. The good people of Ekiti State should intervene for the sake of posterity. Signed: D.O ADIGUN CHAIRMAN, ALL PROGRESSIVE CONGRESS, ADO EKITI LOCAL GOVERNMENT EKITI STATE. JULY 13TH, 2015 |
DESECRATING THE LATE FUMILAYO ADUNI OLAYINKA’S TOMB COULD NOT HAVE BEEN THE BEST FROM GOVERNOR AYODELE FAYOSE Humanity, with all strides of life has not been able to conquer death. It is a process that all mortal beings will mandatorily and naturally pass through into inevitable eternity. This aphorism was true to the life of Her Excellency late (MRS) Funmilayo Aduni Olayinka. She was the former deputy governor of Ekiti State From October 16th,2010 – April6th,2013. 2. Cancer, that deadly disease snuffed life out of her at her very prime when the curve of her services rising steadfastly to develop Ekiti was most desirable. Her death was untimely, a pain and anguish to her hubby, siblings, family and Ekiti State as a whole. She was no doubt an illustrious and a leading light daughter of the land of honour. 3. Late Funmilayo Aduni Olayinka was a typical Ekiti woman personified who epitomized patriotism, honour, dignity and respect for all and sundry. She would do everything possible to put Ekiti interest, above all primordial considerations even when her individual interest was involved. She drew no line between people on party partisanship. All she knew was that we all belong to Ekiti and hence the instrumentality of the government must be devoted to the overall interest of the people irrespective of their religion, the party they belong and even where they come from. She believed life is all about service and sacrifice. This earned her the acronym of MOREMI of Ekiti Land. 4. Her death came as a rude serious shock across the country and this again brought into focus the deadly cancer infection and why more attention should be given to its enlightenment, causes, prevention and if achievable it’s cure especially amongst women folks. Experts of international repute on cancer besieged Ekiti State to do the worthiest to expose everything about cancer including the establishment of a cancer diagnostic and wellness facility named after her; Aduni Olayinka was given all honours that she deserved. 5. Burying the former deputy Governor became a big issue largely between the tripartite factors of the Ekiti State Government, the Ado Ekiti community and the Olayinka Family. The primogenitary culture of Yoruba came into play as Olayinka Family was insistent on burying her at Abeokuta. On behalf of the Ado Ekiti community, the kabiyesi, HRM, Oba Rufus Adeyemo Adejugbe Aladesanmi III JP, CON, Ewi of Ado Ekiti insisted and requested that no heroine in Ado Ekiti history is ever allowed to be buried out of the native land. On this very tenable and vigorous persuasion, the Olayinka Family conceded and insisted on a very befitting burial. 6. The Heroes Park was muted by the government of the former governor His Excellency, Dr. Kayode Fayemi in tune with the global best practices to honour all heroes and heroines of Ekiti origin as a mark of honour. In order to sustain this noble idea, the heroes park was created within the prism of the law. It was indeed a creation of the Ekiti State House of Assembly. An infraction will be a disservice and deliberate impunity. As a mark of honour, the late deputy governor was interred in the heroes park in compliance with law. The park was beautifully fenced and decorated with a potential for improvement to accommodate more Ekiti heroes and heroines. 7. The Ado Ekiti Local Government chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC) and its numerous supporters in and outside Ekiti State and other well wishers view seriously with reservation the claim of His Excellency Mr. Ayodele Fayose , the Governor of Ekiti State that he is honouring her by building a women centre within the confine of the park and almost right on the tomb of the late Funmilayo Olayinka. To us this is a disservice and deliberate extreme partisanship to fight and dishonor Moremi even in death. There are lots of open and undesignated spaces across the state capital that could be used for the so called women centre. African Culture and value do forgive th |
