AFCON Qualifier: Super Eagles Camp Opens on Monday – Gernot Rohr

The Super Eagles head coach, Gernot Rohr has said that the Nigeria senior national team’s camp will open on Monday 9th November, 2020 ahead of the 2021 African Nations Cup qualifier double header against Sierra Leone, BSNSports.com.ng can exclusively report.

Rohr in an exclusive interview with BSN Sports on Thursday confirmed the resumption date adding that the two friendly matches against Algeria and Tunisia helped him to discover new talents who will be invited for the next two games in Nigeria and Sierra Leone.

“We will open Super Eagles camp on Monday 9th of November to prepare for our game on the 13th and 17th.” He told BSN Sports.

The Franco-German coach said he is not bothered about his team dropping from 29th to 31st on FIFA rankings following their inability to win in either of the friendly matches.

“It doesn’t matter if we are number 29th or 31st on FIFA Rankings. The friendly games are the only possibilities to test our players and wears happy about it.

He however admitted that the positive in the the friendly games is that they helped in discover talents.

” It is more important to find good players like Okoye, Sanusi, Ejuke and others in the friendlies. We wish to win absolutely but it is not the most important. The most important is to discover players to fortify our team.”

“Now, there is possibility to be efficient in our competition games. Of course, Sanusi will be in my list and have chances to play in the two games. We are very optimistic in our next games.”

Nigeria is topping group L with six points in two games. Having defeated Lesotho and Benin Republic in their previous matches, another maximum six points from the home and away games against Sierra Leone who could only manage to garner one point from two matches will automatically qualify Nigeria for the 2021 African Nations Cup in Cameroon.

Eagles camp opens November 9 ahead Sierra Leone clash–Rohr
sportinglife.ng

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has confirmed November 9 as the opening date for the team’s camp in Edo State’s capital, Benin, for next month’s 2021 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) double header against Sierra Leone.

The German coach said he was fine-tuning the squad list for the two encounters to be held in Benin on November 13 and Freetown on November 17, adding the injured Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi and Bordeaux’s Samuel Kalu would be major omissions.

“Yes; we are playing in Benin,” Rohr told NationSport yesterday.

“On Monday, November 9, we will open the camp,” he added.

Early this month, Rohr blooded some new players for the Super Eagles during the two preparatory matches against Algeria and Tunisia in Austria ahead of the AFCON qualifiers against Sierra Leone.

The experiment saw some newly-invited including the likes of Zaidu Sanusi (FC Porto, Portugal), Frank Onyeka (FC Midtjylland, Denmark), Samson Tijani (TSV Hartberg, Austria), Cyriel Dessers (KRC Genk, Belgium), and Chidera Ejuke (CSKA Moscow, Russia) being handed their first outings in the national team colours.

But the experienced 67-year-old Rohr has now hinted that some of the new players would be included in the squad to face Sierra Leone, with the inclusion of fresh new players he refused to disclose yet.

“Some of the new players will be there,” Rohr said about the long-awaited list. “But still missing is Ndidi and Kalu; and one (player) will come for the first time.”

The Super Eagles are currently leading Group L with six points after winning their opening two matches at home against Benin (2-1) and away against Lesotho (4-2).

×Southampton Nathan Tella, Fulham Adarabiyio Cleared To Play For Nigeria In AFCON 2021 Qualifiers*
owngoalnigeria.com

Per reports exclusively gathered by Owngoalnigeria.com editorial team, the duo of Tosin Adarabiyio and Nathan Tella are free to play for Nigeria in the next AFCON 2021 qualifiers.

Both players are in the English Premier League and eligible for England as well but at the moment a call up by Nigeria looks more likely considering they won’t be needing any form of approval by FIFA to play for Nigeria.

21 year old Nathan Tella was mentioned by the trusted assistant of the coach of the Nigerian team Tunde Adelakun while speaking on players likely to switch allegiance to Nigeria.

It is believed that for Adelakun to publicly speak about him means he is on the radar of the coaches and if he could make himself a mainstay in the team of Southampton then he will no doubt get a call up. Tella hasn’t been capped at any level by England.

So far he has made the matchday squad five times for Premier League games but has only played three games coming on as a substitute against Tottenham Hotspur, Burnley and Chelsea respectively.

Adarabiyio has been on the radar of Nigeria for a while but the former Manchester City defender who only recently moved to Fulham wasn’t keen on committing to Nigeria.

However he has had a change of heart and he is open to accepting a call up if handed one by Rohr. Despite playing for England at three different youth levels he doesn’t require an approval from FIFA as the games were only friendly games.

The decision to call the players lies in the court of Rohr who is expected to name his squad for the back to back AFCON 2021 qualifiers game against Sierra Leone next week.

Exclusive- Southgate Urges Lookman To Make U-Turn On Switch To Nigeria From England
owngoalnigeria.com Oct 23, 2020 6:38 PM

Coach of the senior national team of England Gareth Southgate has told on loan RB Leipzig winger Ademola Lookman To pause the documentation of his switch of allegiance to Nigeria.

Owngoalnigeria.com exclusively gathered that Southgate want Lookman who has already started the process of his switch of allegiance to Nigeria from England to hang on till the end of the season.

The coach who is a big admirer of the talent of the 23 year old want him to make the best use of his time on loan at Fulham to force his way into his plan for Euros 2021.

Lookman has already started on a bright note with Fulham with a goal to his name last week and Southgate has assured him that more of same performance could earn him a spot in his team.

It’s not the first time that Southgate has urged the winger to shun Nigeria as he did so in 2018 publicly while at the helm of the U20 of England. Back then he said England will do anything to stop Lookman from playing for Nigeria.

However , Lookman has already submitted his papers to FIFA for a switch with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) keen on speeding up the process to have him available next year.

Rohr’s assistant Tunde Adeleke confirmed in 2019 that Lookman has already started the process of his switch of allegiance from England to Nigeria.

komekn:
I doubt he will change.

However, if he did, will you blame him, the double-standard standard within the NFF is nauseating.

Kevin Akpoguma who has openly and publicly said I only want to play for Germany. Changes his allegiance to Nigeria within weeks he is on the team.

Meanwhile Ovie and lookman have committed to Nigeria for over two years and a year respectively. But NOTHING done.

For those who put their education to good use will know that FIFA operates to regulation and a clear cut process management.

And will not give credence to those nonsensical excuses of its taking time.
But I thought players switching from English teams takes longer time and process because the four different football federations within the UK have to also sign to that effect unlike the case of Kevin Akpoguma.
