ProgrammingProgramming Section Needs A Vibrant And Active Moderator. by sparkle7(op): 7:59am On Oct 08, 2019
It is an open secret that the moderators of the programming section on Nairaland have all being inactive. There are tons of juicy and useful threads that have been open here in the programming section but it just dies off due to lack of publicity.
I can't still recall the last time a programming thread reached front page here except a couple of days ago, of which I know very much lalasticlala did the needful.
The moderators have not even found time to check up on their responsibilities. A quick research on their monikers will show a last seen of a month back!!
Those who are in charge should look into this matter with scrutiny.
How can the admin be a programmer and his section isn't getting traction on front page.
Respected members of the Nairaland admin table, can you please make an appointment of a new one to add to the old inactive ones.
Pictures of their inactiveness attached below.
lalasticlala you can help us reason The Admin.
Thank you.

And what did they say was the reason for the block?
They never mentioned it. Just apologized for the inconvenience and unblocked it. I vex give them sha. And threatened to use another registrar. Also accused them of trying to scam me.

Don't take it personal, but i believe u tried to be smart and open other accounts to buy at cheap price. If yes, then expect that. If no, then I give up for directnic
Nope. I don't try to be smart. That was my very first account. I don't know what happened o. That is why I don't jump from one registrar to another.
BusinessRe: What To Do To Make Money Online? by sparkle7:
Uhm guys. Directnic just locked my account
I don't know what I did wrong. I have tried to reach to them through email but they don't respond. Just an auto responder talking dust.
If you have am account with directnic, kindly assist mW in submitting a ticket because I can't use their ticket submission. They locked me out there too.
And I already bought a domain there.
These guys are not okay.
Kindly help me if you have an account so that I can reach out to them.
Drop your WhatsApp number, I will contact you to give you my details.
Thanks a bunch.

just woke up this morning to see that Netsol has deducted $11.9 from my account because of a " starter hosting-unix" please has anyone witnessed this? and is it possible that i get refunded.

For the 2 domains I have bought so far from them so far, I made sure I removed the auto renewal

I've checked the renewal center and I noticed that I can't even remove the "starter hosting-unix", I'm yet to call them although I've talked to them on twitter and have gotten a ticken.

Do you work abroad? Or is it a Nigerian firm that pays you that much?

your advice is misleading. I didn't study computer science but I've been on different jobs as a python developer. Now on >400k salary.. please encourage people. All the jobs I had no one ,I mean NO ONE demanded my certificate or School I went to.
Hello sir. What does your work entails? Do you use python for web or data science that earns you that much. I use django tho.

kotlin for native android apps, even google has dropped java as its official mobile app development language a while back.
flutter and reactNative or ionic for cross-platform apps. (flutter is gaining massive traction these days)

Java and spring is still king for enterprise level backend dev though, you can't take that away
Kotlin still depends in java standard library. And most of the useful libraries are written in java. Koitlin just leverages on it's interoperability with java to keep up.
Java still remains king in mobile. Do you know how many thousands of libraries Java has that google haven't yet written a kotlin equivalent.
Koitlin is good. But when it comes the vastness of libraries, toolkits for rapid development and APIs. Java still beats it hands down.
Moving from java to kotlin won't be that hard for a java programmer tho.

When people ask question like the OP, i just advise them to go learn something else. Being a developer goes beyond a job. Its a lifestyle that must be fueled with passion. The tricky thing is that money will always come, but your development skills and expertise will have to matter first.
Yeah bro. Some people think it's plain easy. Not knowing it is a full career that needs 100% focus if you want to succeed. They think programming is a business.

So, what do you suggest?
I studied biochemistry for my Bs.c but now learning programming because biochem isn't yielding any fruit financially. Currently on CSS.

Would you suggest I should continue or do something else?
I won't advise you to be a self taught programmer. Find a reputable software company and enroll into a course of your choice. Make sure you stick to it. With regards to your change of course, I wouldn't advise you to get a computer science degree in Nigeria .
It is just so trashy. Unless maybe you can afford some of those private university where the needed resources are readily available.
So leave that self taught thing for now. It comes with various challenges that if your passion and interest isn't strong enough, you might quit on the way.
So enroll into an I.t school and do the needful. Or better still get someone to give you one on one coaching.
I have seen some people who tried teaching themselves for 8 months but can't boast of any deployed app on their portfolio.
Coming from a computer science undergraduate.
Peace.

Don't misquote me to type rubbish.

I stand by my words -- most good programmers didn't study anything related to computer science.

Also, when finding a job as a programmer, nobody cares about your certificate or class of degree. Companies want results and not paper certificates.

I have been actively involved in the tech industry for close to a decade now. I find it ridiculous that you are mentioning NCS when we are talking about software and related stuff. For goodness sake, NCS is a sham political organization, and no serious programmer takes them seriously.

Go into the real industry and see what people are doing there. Never you ever talk about useless NCS software summit where every year, people come to present electronic voting apps as their highest achievements.
You can't reach conclusion by just what you saw. I never said that it was all paper. The needed skills are the main thing. A certificate is just an added advantage.
How can you make a conclusion without proof that what you say holds water? I ask again on what grounds or research did you reach the hasty conclusion that most good programmers(emphasis on most) didn't study computer science?
You can't just come online and spread prejudiced information that you don't have enough proof on.

Because I'm planning on specializing in Java
If you want to use java then use java. Don't fall for this bullsh.t talk of 'Java is dead'. What killed java if I may ask?
One thing with Nigeria is that we like new and flashy things. You chose a language based on stability of that lang and the needed libraries that can make your life easier. How large the community is, how detailed the documentation is and other relevant stuffs.
Depending on what you want to do, you chose a language. Java remains the undisputed champion on mobile app dev.

Liar.

If you know what you are doing, people will hire you.

The tech industry is the only place where you are not asked for certification or grade before you are hired. Just be good and show previous projects you have done.

Most of the good programmers in Nigeria today didn't study computer science.

Pcguru, a popular programmer on this platform didn't study computer science.

Dhtml18, who has now deactivated his account, another popular programmer here didn't study computer science. In fact, Dhtml18's case is very interesting, because he studied medicine and surgery, became a qualified doctor but he is not practicing medicine, rather he's programming and he has worked with many notable organizations.

Note: there is a world of difference between a web programmer and a WordPress installer.
I beg to disagree on the above. What metrics did you use to come up with the above false conclusion? You haven't even graced any software summit organised by the the National Computer science body. There you will see badass programmers who dhtml can't even untie their shoe lace.
I agreed with your other points but the bolded is simple off track and false.
That you saw some computer science student struggling at the initial stage doesn't mean they didn't succeed in being good with programming.
You saying that MOST good programmers in Nigeria didn't study computer science is simply fallacious from all ramifications.
You just saw 2 good ones and made up your conclusions.
Please endeavor to carry out a detailed research before you make such statements.
Thank you.

ProgrammingRe: [Career Post] "What Are My Chances Of Getting A Job As A Web Developer?" by sparkle7:
Web developer is a type of programmer that builds web applications using frontend and back end tools. So the laguages you need is HTML and CSS (Paramount) JavaScript, a back end language like php or ruby or python or java, then databases like mysql, postgres or nosql databases like mongodb.
So as you can see the learning curve is deep from HTML to CSS to JavaScript to php using a database like mysql or mariadb.
If you enter into web dev just to get a job then you might go hungry and lose the interest in it.
One thing people fail to know is that programming is not like other business where you start seeing returns immediately. It is more of a career than a business. So if you want to be really good, you must have to dedicate your whole life to it.
It takes time bro and experience. Just like an investment you make on yourself and reap the rewards later.
You can work on andela, do freelance works on fiverr or run projects for computer science students.
My 2 cents.

Business To BusinessRe: Kindle Direct Publishing: How Many Pages Should My Book Be? ANSWERED. by sparkle7: 10:06pm On Oct 01, 2019
iLegendd:
To add extra details to the main topic, the bigger your trim size (book size), the smaller the pages. I was battling with a 200k words book - which gave me 1,196 pages on a 6 by 9 trim size.

I need to publish this book on paperback, but it's way beyond what Amazon can handle, so I reduced the font and changed the trim size to 8 by 10 and had 800+ pages. I was excited I have finally reduced the book to below 828, but guess what? Amazon said an 8 by 10 trim size can't be above 440 pages. So, I need to delete half of the book before Amazon will publish it.

They have shattered my last hope on this bundled 6-in-1 book. Anyway, I'll still put it on Kindle, but not paperback. See images.
How do you write a book that large? 200k words!! Are you kidding me?

$9.99. Though, it is currently $2.99.

The Kindle version just went live 20 minutes ago. Go on www.amazon.com and type either Born a Crime or "**t Born a Crime" and it will appear alongside Trevor's book, Mitchell Obama's book, and other big books.

Please, help me modify the title of the book from your post. Most of the Oyibo readers who will buy the book will do a Google search about the author and I don't want Google to show this page.
Jeez this your KATS CRIED formula seems very effective. But I don't get the A - Analysis part. Also, can you throw some light on the E- Email list.
And err... How do you rank your keywords that your book competes with the big guns out there?

I can do T, S, C and D in KATS CRIED. The rest are not so clear.

K = Keywords
A = Analysis
T = Title
S = Subtitle
C = Cover
R = Review
I = Inspection
E = Email-list
D = Description

So, the book has been uploaded to draft and I'll soon submit it either today, tomorrow, or on the 1st of Oct.

I just finished the back cover of the paperback. See image below. I made the book cheap $12.99. Though, I'll increase the price after some hours of going live or a few days. I'll make the Kindle version $2.99 for some days, then increase it to $9.99.
What dimension did you use for your paperback sir?
That paperback is just killing me. Even after making my design to be 5 by 6 inches or so, they still got one problem to say about it.

Good morning domainers
I'm new here, I have been trying to reach out to the experienced men here... but I noticed they are not giving me a helping hand rather ignore my mentions, the person I finally got his number (Geo favour)
Told me to go and read from page 1 to 300, how does it sound to you... most Nigerians don't like helping one another, if the op had this same charisma how many of you will sell domain and make profit today.... let love lead... in life we rose by helping others... I still have my funds to invest a Good Samaritan should put me through Biko ..God bless you as you do
Forgive my typo errors
Reading from page 1 to 300 doesn't sound that hard to me. I read this thread from page 1 to 400 back then it was still not up to the number it is right now.
It took me 5days to do that.
With my pen and paper of course to jot down some salient points.
And am still following it till now. So i read more than 700 pages..
.
So don't make it seem as if it is impossible to do. If you don't want to stress yourself with reading then get someone who read it from 1 to 700 to tutor you.
Of course you will pay him good for saving you the troubles of reading.
The knowledge of domaining is inscribed from the very first page of this thread to the last, so do you yourself a favor by listening to the person who told you to read just from 1- 300.
You are complaining? Some people even read this thread and some other thread of iyke from Beginning to End and they are still alive with loads of knowledge on domaining in their arsenal.
If you are too busy to read, look for someone who had all the time in the world to read it for mentoring.
You will pay him or her for sure, so if you are cool with that then go ahead.
But if not, the information on this thread is all that you need.
BTW I am offering mentoring on domain flipping on WhatsApp. You can contact me on WhatsApp with o80275726..88
I already gave out some freebies in the form of videos there. They are pretty much enough to get you up and running on how the business works. The rest are paid.

Also, you need to have someone who knows English more than you to proofread your book or you can use a proofreading software like PWA or Grammarly.

From your writeup above, I could find some mistakes and this tells me it's one of the reasons Oyibo refused to buy. They'll read it on Kenp and after two pages, they'll dump it. Oyibos hate reading books with lots of typo and blunder.

Though, there will definitely be one or two typos or blunders in all self-published books, but when it's too much, readers get pissed.

From your short comment above, let me show you all your mistakes.

MISTAKES

YOURS

Well this month have been so good to me grin grin Pics below.
I still don't no where am getting it wrong.

MINE

Well, (comma) this month has have been so good to me. (period)

Pics below.

I still don't know no where I'm am getting it wrong. (Wrongly is also good.)

So, in your short line, someone like me who isn't an English major or a native speaker spotted 5 punctuation, spelling, and grammar mistakes.

Now, what do you think an Oyibo man or woman who is a native speaker will spot?

So, you need to proofread, proofread, and proofread or hire a proofreader. Proofreading is the most difficult thing in this business — it's time consuming.
Okay, (comma) I will watch my grammar and spellings next time. Thanks for spotting 'em out.
