Lexusgs430: Case Study 1 (sim only) Phone cost - 500gbp (after a couple of months) Iphone 6 plus Sim only contract - 15gbp pcm
400+15*24 = 760 gbp
Case study 2 (with contract) Phone -150 deposit (iphone 6 plus 128gb) Contract - 56*24 pcm - 1344 + 150 = 1494 gbp
My summation.............. Subject to knife and fork dissection You have a few math errors up there. Nevertheless, IPhone 6plus would never be 400 GBP. Currently, Iphone 5s 16GB sim free costs 549GBP The plan being offered with Iphone 6plus would not cost anything less than 20GBP, but then, 15GBP is considerable. He signed a contract that would cost him 940 for the 2 years. Considering that, 940 - (15*24) = 580 Therefore, my theory is still valid. It's cheaper for him with the contract |
Travel › Re: Nigerian Students In The Uk How Do You Survive? by spikesC(m): 10:44pm On Oct 11, 2014 |
Lexusgs430: Best to buy a phone (cash payment) a couple of months after release and opt for a sim only contract (typically 12 months, but can be cancelled anytime, with no penalty imposed). One could save as much as 30gbp a month on sim only deals, with mega bundles (unlimited calls, unlimited internet - no fair use policy attached and of course, unlimited sms - if anyone still uses sms). Not necessary true oo. When you add the sim free cost of the phone and sim deal, you mostly likely will be paying more than when you opt for a contract. Also, the contract helps to spread the cost, which most people cannot afford to shell out at a go. The mistake he made was getting a package that he really didn't need. |

kingsilly: Was quite straight forward..just went to THREE office said I want iphone on contract..she just collect my details like passport address nd my Barclay card details..£100 upfront nd £45 monthly..iphone6......dazall 100 pounds upfront and 45 pounds for 2 years? You just dash three money o Even the iphone 6 is cheaper in other places. You should have made your research very well. For other people, kindly use confused.com to compare plans before ordering |

Dfavouredone: I have been seeing this word "checking bag".
Pls what is the meaning, and how does it differ from other bags that one will be travelling with? You have, basically, two types of bags you can travel with. The checking bag and the hand luggage The checking bag is the one the airline officials will normally scan and load in a separate compartment where you would not have access to it till you get to your final destination. It is usually the big boxes with most of your things carefully packed in it. On the other hand, the hand luggage is the small bag, like your school or laptop bag, where you have a few items that you might need in the plane or waiting area. It would basically contain cash, laptop, phones, toothbrush and paste etc. |

HudsonBanks: My people good evening! Its been a bit since I've been here, trying to settle down took longer than I expected. The experience so far has been good, my Uni is really beautiful with a lake in it and wonderful art pieces everywhere. Oga justwise you were right oo surrey is actually a posh area and things cost! Infact eh I stopped reasoning exchange rate before I get heart attack lol.
SpikesC and Kingsilly I also tried to deposit by POS but both banks I opened accounts with (Llyods & NatWest) said it isn't possible. So na ATM withdrawal and deposit win am oo after all 420naira is barely 1.55quid per withdrawal which is decent I must say, I was able to withdraw 1060quid today so I can pull out another 1k in the morning to deposit in my accounts. I've been making most payments via POS and the exchange rate isn't as horrible as I thought it would be.
GeneralShepherd you should try out SportsDirect for nice winter wears and warm clothing at very sweet prices (remain small I for max out my GTB mastercard cos the prices were too tempting lol).
Finally, who fails to plan plans to fail. Lets all all get out our planning hats and plan the hell out of our future! One love mates. kingsilly: Same here bro...I use atm withdrawal all I need..spike C was lucky I guess Sorry bro. I wasn't the one that did it, it was my bro. He used his GTB atm and deposited with a POS. And yes, i am very sure it worked then. Nevertheless, there's this club i went to on Wednesday that has a POS for free cashbacks. I asked the chick if it's unlimited and she said yes, as far as they have the cash to pay you. I guess it should be the same in most night clubs. But really, this should just be an option for someone who intend to move a huge amount, bit by bit, and really cares about the 420 per transaction. The person should consider security ooo. I for one don't like carrying cash at all. I really prefer running my transactions on cards and internet banking. Luckily for me, i paid all my school fees via my Naira mastercard and moved my maintenance money via international transfer as it was in my pounds domiciliary account, all thanks to University of Derby Infact, make God bless them well well for me |

I wan move.2mill without bank charges Yeah, he said they refused him usage of POS. Yes, you can, but they'll refund the money back to the card That huge sum, in Naira, is best moved via school fees payment on the mastercard or the ugly old change and transfer or you check how much western union will charge you. You don't have to change the money to transfer it and they use standard rates. |

N:B The naija account doesn't have Internet banking enabled..but has a Mastercard linked to it. If they refused to do the POS thing, then you have to do mastercard withdrawals. Last i did, it was 270, less than even when you do online payment. Then they charge you 420 naira. |

Probably flying with KLM. Your airline will tell you if it's a bag or 2 that's allowed. If they said one checking bag of 23kg, you must only checking one bag |

justwise: The section in bold caught my attention and i completely see where you are coming from. Having a lot of Nigerians in one uni may be a good thing but having them in the same class is a tough one to coup with. Avoid all-Nigerian project group, its a bad idea. Tell me about it. The first accommodation i got were occupied by 3 Nigerians and a polish couple. Bills are contributed (not even shared) as the place runs on a meter. The day i went there, the polish woman complained a lot to the point she started crying. The landlady, also a Nigerian, said she wouldn't do anything about the situation, that the occupants will need to settle any issue between themselves. I just had to find my way and kept searching. GeneralShepherd: ...
My sister is a British citizen by birth so she advised me against using shops in the university,so I went to Milton Keynes today to buy the things I didn't bring from Nigeria.A Nigerian friend took me to a farmer's market where I bought tomatoes for 1 pounds(1kg),curry,pepper,palm oil, groundnut oil for under 12 pounds. I forgot to mention that I came to the UK with garri 10 painters, bread fruit(20 cups),dry fish(2kg),Cray fish worth 5000 Naira, 5 packs of indomie hungry man size(I ate three packs for sustenance till I went to market today).
I am also going to apply for my National insurance number tomorrow (you it need to work),I want to get a cleaning job in the school for 7.50 and hour ,2hrs daily ,five days a week. When I got shopping I check for savings as little as .20 pounds( save that five times and you have a pound),every penny counts unless you are on scholarship.
I am about drawing up a comprehensive timetable as this is the most important aspect of your sojourn in the UK. Without a proper plan your academics will surfer.
It is not an easy road but I believe it will end well. The stress will come, loneliness will come but its just a sacrifice I have to make for one year with hopes of a brighter future.
I am going to leave UK next september with an Msc in Offshore and Ocean Technology with Subsea Engineering(and with above 85 percent score). You know why I am so sure? I am Nigerian, we are naturally rugged. Gold is made pure only when it goes through fire!! adversity makes us stronger.
Keep the faith brothers and sisters. Keep calm, and be Nigerian. You can actually call them for the national insurance, they'll ask for your details on the phone and send you a form via mail to fill. After filling it, you post it back. Within 2 weeks, you'll get the NI via post. Remember to also register with a GP. Also, don't restrict your job search to petty jobs. That is mostly what you'll be getting for now, but you can still find very good jobs in your area of study/profession. Get very close to your lecturers and program leaders. If you make a high distinction, they can help you get a scholarship for your PhD, if you're interested. Goodluck to you hustle bro |
