Security operatives took over the streets of Kaduna on Friday night few hours to today’s presidential and National Assembly polls.

Detachments of combined military personnel, the police and other security agents were seen patrolling the streets, while members of the quick intervention team occupied strategic places across the city.

Although the state police command asked law-abiding residents not to panic as their rights to vote and be voted for would be guaranteed, many residents are still worried. Zubairu Abubakar, Superintendent of Police, CP and public relations officer, PRO of the command assued residents while speaking with the magazine this morning that law abiding residents in the state had nothing to fear.

“We have briefed our men. We have sensitized them and have cautioned them to protect lives and properties of both electorate and electoral officials. We have also asked them to ensure that lives and property of the people are well guided and human rights are protected. So innocent civilians should not be afraid,” he assured.

Residents on the other hand are calling the attention of the securitymen to identified flash points in the city such as Rigasha, Angwan Sanusi, Tudun Wada, Ayidan Mani, Goni Gora, Television Garage and Malari.

Meanwhile, the All Progressive Congress, APC in the state has raised alarm over planned by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to use security agents to hold down APC stalwarts in the state till elections are over.

Samuel Aruwan, APC spokesman in the state, said those on the target list are Nasir El-Rufai, APC gubernatorial candidate; Suleiman Hunkuyi, APC senatorial candidate for Kaduna North and chairman of the APC Kaduna state campaign council, and Lawal Yakawada, former secretary to the state government during Patrick Yakowa government, now a senior member of the APC campaign council in the state.

Aruwan said the police invited the named politicians yesterday and followed it up with written invitation and telephone calls. But for now, none of the identified APC stalwarts is under arrest.

From my experience the following factors worked against you.

1. No travel history.(Western country preferred)
2. Low income and job profile to support your trip. (Your monthly salary can't pay for a US plane ticket and feed your wife and kid at the same time )
3. You didn't go with your spouse.( If married, this reduces your chances drastically)
4. No convincing reason for your trip (An official trip and hotel booking would have served your circumstances better)
5. General naivety of the whole visa process

Being married should have helped you but with all the factors above the VO was definitely going to bounce you...no two ways about it.

Don't bother re-applying immediately till most of your circumstances (Now a red flag in their records) have changed significantly else you will just be throwing away money.right

I have read so many responses to this write up many of which gave wise tips but the one lamenting the green passport not having respect is annoying.
May I authoritatively inform the writer of that piece that the Nigeria E passport is as date one of the most respected today in the world because of its high security features. It is in fact second to the United States passport in meeting ICAO standard.
Granting or refusal of visa is based not on the Country’s passport but other issues some of which are as follows ;
●Confidence of the appplicant during interview
●Evidence of strong ties at home to prove that the applicant is not abandoning home
●Evidence of livelihood to prove that applicant will not be a public charge in host Country
●Previous travel history hence the question have you travelled before is more important than people think
●It's always a good proof of financial independence when you book a reservation and pay for at least a night rather than filling your relation's address as the place to stay in the States
●Age is also important. Do you look as old as you claim?
●Dress neatly and not to impress
●Never appear desperate, be relaxed.
●Never be in a hurry to produce any document except when it's requested for

@OP, I know a few peeps who have gotten visas with salaries lees than 180k and have not travelled out of the country before. Some likely reasons u were denied visa are:

1. You appear to have no strong ties to Nigeria : Travelling alone without your kid(s) and hubby raises a red-flag. Seems like you are running away. Next time, apply for a visa for the whole family, even if you plan to travel alone.
2. Intention of Visit sounds weak: You may truly have a cousin you miss so much and would love to see, but what stops your cousin from visiting you here in Nigeria (I want to assume your cousin is not yet married)? Rather than you leaving your hubby and kids to make a long trip to the US.
3. What you plan to do during your visit: During your 2 weeks stay, I think it would have made more sense saying you are going for a vacation and u plan to visit wonderful places like, NASA space centre, Musem for Natural sciences, etc (depending on where u want to visit). Then when asked if you know anyone in the USA, u say YES, you have a cousin and may visit her, depending if time permits you
4. Where you will be staying: You can book hotel room(s) without paying a kobo. This gives the Visa Officer the impression you won't be inconveniencing anyone in the USA and you plan to 'spend' your cash in the USA...

If the managers of the Nigerian economy were to be sincere with the nation, they will agree that there is something basically wrong with the continued fall in the value of the Naira. Even when our so celebrated foreign reserve stood at $60billion and an import demand cover of about 20 months, the Naira exchange rate never firmed up. Rather, the Naira was on a slide against other currencies; a situation which negates all known economic principles.

Yet in the early 1980s, when the nation's foreign reserve stood at just $2billion with a four-month import cover, the Naira exchanged for less than one Naira to the Dollar.

So, what is it that went wrong with the economy in these 25 years that the Naira has been so battered to the point of exchanging for as much as N215 to the Dollar? The answer is not far fetched from a mismanaged currency by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in collusion with the commercial banks.

It is obvious, and the warning signs are crystal clear, that Nigeria's economic managers have broken the doors to economic sanity and compelled Nigerians to tow the path of poverty. Before the free fall of Naira which began with the introduction of the Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP), during the regime of military President, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, Nigeria was never rated among the poorest nations of the world; neither did Nigerians crave the Dollar nor did 70% of Nigerians live on a Dollar per day.

As a panacea for the deepening poverty, advocates like Henry Boyo, have proffered a better managed currency for a stronger exchange rate of the Naira as the only solution. It is discernable that the poverty in the land correlates with the depreciation of the Naira; and regrettably, the value of Naira does not correlate with the high foreign reserve.

It is an economic contradiction; an aberration which suggests a deliberate manipulation of the currency - and by extension the economy - to keep Nigerians poor.

Else how did the affluence that resided with the Nigerian and his Naira in the 1970s and early 1980s suddenly vanished into thin air, so much so, over 70% of Nigerians, today, are now suffocating under the yoke of poverty?

The CBN, as the manager of the economy, has as its prime mandate, price stability. That, of course, can only be ensured through a stable exchange rate. But the CBN is known to deliberately devalue the Naira on monthly basis through the creation of excess liquidity and the substitution of Dollar earnings with minted Naira to be shared at the monthly federal allocation; thereby creating scarcity of the Dollar and surplus of the Naira in the economy.

It is only logical, economically, that with a surplus Naira pursuing few Dollars in the open market, the value of the Naira will continue to fall. The CBN is, therefore, deliberately devaluing the Naira, with the prevailing climate. Certainly, this policy needs to be reviewed.

This Newspaper is of the opinion that with this CBN policy, the Naira will never witness any stability. That the Naira is on free fall is not just because the international oil price is down - after all, when oil sold for over $140 per barrel the Naira was never known to have risen in value - but the fact that the CBN acting on the advice of the Brettonwood institute is deliberately keeping Nigerians poor.

That is why, for 25years, Nigeria has been fighting excess liquidity. Nigerians need to hold the CBN and the commercial banks accountable for the downward value of the Naira. That is the only way to arrest the deepening poverty in the land.

I support removal of subsidy but inna country like Nigeria where public officers are not know for being accountable, I suggested it was continued and the reason is simple. The subsidy is the only way the people fells like the government is doing anything reasonable for them.

When the subsidy was removed(even goopartially), how has the money affected the people? What has changed? What has happened to the money saved?

How has the money affected the man on the street? We were told there will be palliatives and some silly buses where are they? Have you rode one before? Do you know someone who has?

If the money saved form the partial removal was used to fix just one refinery it would have been better. What has been done with the money?

Throughout the oil boom of last year what was done with the excess funds? Did we build or fix our refineries? Did we use the money to fix our power supply or make our society more secured.

The subsidy removal will have no effect on Nigerians due to corruption so why not just leave it as it was the only way it would benefit the common man. That is economics a government should look at not some economic theory that will end up a good onefailure

Truth be told... US visa is one of the easiest visa to get. If you have a good reason to go to us, your visa application will be granted. One pointer I noticed is that they prefer certain category of people to enter ie people with ties in US that already av proper jobs, professionals etc. I applied for a visa first time this year and had a very interesting conversation (didn't seem like an interview) with the VO, and I was immediately given my visa. We're too different to live together: women love people and relationships, men love objects (like cars, houses, gadgets, game consoles etc), a man's lot is his career, a woman's is marriage (according to the curse after the fall of man), women are indirect, men are always direct, men want sex before they develop feelings for women, women can't have sex without emotional attachment first(unless they r who.res, even if they are who.res lolzzz), a man wants to hv sex, a woman wants to make love (I swear she doesn't even mind just cuddling), men see having dinner as a time to quench hunger, women see having dinner as time for bonding, let me continue? A married man without money feels unfulfilled, a wealthy woman without a man feels similarly, I can go on and on! But no time, my point, you need a lot of patience, tolerance, understanding, endurance, compromise etc to survive in marriage. Guys, stay alone and worry for one. Apart from financially, marriage drains you emotionally. You have to deal with a partner suffering from PMS five days in a month for life (by the time she reaches menopause, you'd be probably dead) and when she ain't suffering PMS, its worse cos she is pregnant!! Don't forget regular mood swings, test games, among other complicated female emotional ailments. Plus wait till you get divorced before you know how much financially and emotionally expensive marriage could be. That brings us to...

6. It may end up in divorce: possible causes of divorce. She gains weight, sex with one person for years gone stale and boring, the love (or whatever dumb ass name you call it) fades, you want a new woman, (men are polygamous by nature, hard truth. Deal with it), she is no longer the woman you married, (true, women do change after marriage for many reasons, that is story for another day), you cheat on her, she cheats on you, many many more. Don't scar yourself with a painful divorce. Stay single and happy.

7. You get to focus on your dreams without distractions. Like I said earlier, a man's career is his lot (or curse). As s man if you haven't got a successful career, you will probably die unhappy and unproductive. The compromise you have to make to keep her happy will retard you from achieving your dreams to the fullest. Pleasing a woman and pursuing your dreams are mutually exclusive. don't get married.
