Music/RadioRe: Why Do Igbo Artistes Sing In Yoruba? by StFunmi(f): 6:50am On Mar 03, 2009
Please who keeps saying Igbo lanuage is going extinct and Igbo artists are leaving Igbo language to only sing Yoruba?
Timaya is ijaw and he made music in igbo, yoruba, pidgin and ijaw languages. Lagbaja is yoruba and me made some songs in igbo, yoruba, Bini and pidgin english etc. Music is all about the crowd you appeal to.  Most of the songs the OP cited are party music and guess who creates more parties in Nigeria?. have you heard any Igbo highlife musician singing in yoruba or any Fuji musician singing in igbo or hausa?. It depends on the crowd. Have you also noticed that 80% of the gospel music released in Nigeria are igbo music? why?, because the older generation of igbos prefer gospel to high life partying music quite unlike yorubas. Will you release similar gospel music to the hausa market and hoping to make huge sales?. The market in most cases defines the trend for all these songs.

Check out this igbo song below. It should be the hottest Nigerian video in youtube now.  Very nice song and I wish she remix it in english and put some rap into it.:

Chinyere Udoma - Nduru nke Eligwe

tosinaded@:
We re tryn to develop and advance, sum peeps are talking abt culture and keeping it alive!
Bullshit.
For heavens sake of wut good has our culture been to us?
We av bn backwards for like forever and now we tryn to move ahead only for u peeps to cry blue murder!
If to say na1 good and positive culture now i for say!
Your culture is really important for your identity especially your language but it's very rude to speak that language especially when the person next to you does not understand it. They claim our language is going into extinction when the market women in Ikole village do no understand common pidgin english or the over 30 million igbos speaking igbo in the eastern villages will suddenly start speaking english to each other or the ijaw fishermen will soon forget the ijaw language because he watches only english movies,  Coming to the language used in movies, it neither matters to me nor do I think the language in movie helps foster the language itself.

Common, how many people that are non yorubas that will tell you categorically they learnt yoruba from watching yoruba movies unless they originally speak or understand yoruba?. I have french and spanish songs, some of them I've had for over 7 years and can pronounce the lyrics well yet i don't know what they mean. Will the french claim they are propagating their culture because i sing their music?.  Nollywood should receive a collective accolade and a pat and whomever can contribute to it's development should be welcomed. The so called Bollywood is known as Indian movie, nobody knows whether it's ibo Indian or Yoruba indian or Ijaw indian that runs the movie industry yet the credit goes to all of them.

Hollywood is run largely by Jews but who d hell cares?. The credit goes to America as a whole. The mixture of tribalism in criticizing Nollywood is becoming a fashion here and some people are known for that act and they continue to do it no matter how foolish they sound.

Piece the argument together and trell me whether it's criticism or envy at play here:

1. Nollywood is 100% bull crap, argument 1

2. Nollywood is very tribalistic, argument 2.

3. They keep churning out stupid movies everyday even though yoruba movies are better. Think Tunde kelani and Tade Ogidan.

The unanswered question is: If Nollywood is crap and they don't use our govt money to produce their crap, why worry about tribalism?. Who wants to associate him/herself with crap?. Why not let them poison themselves with their crap?. And it's always Yoruba forumites or yoruba movie celebrities that whine about this over and over. No Ijaw, No ibibio, no Hausa, no Benin, no Ishan etc does that except those that will claim one very soon to foster their tribal jargon. What does that tell you about us?. What impression does it create in other peoples mind?. Why not the yoruba movie industry strive and make their movie #1 in Africa which will automatically relegate Nollywood to the back seat?. Do you know that Ghana movies sell more than Yoruba movies. Did they claim the title by envy or by emulation?. The world has evolved and is beyond tribe and country. Culture can be adjusted especially when it's not particularly useful to those that practice it. Those that refuse to evolve like my fellow republicans will be left behind.  If  we Yorubas don't quit whining about Nollywood, others will soon get the message and laugh at us much better.

Why are we fixated on the past?. Tunde kelani may have had his days but it doesn't mean he's the best today even among the yoruba circle. Common, he was even complaining the other day that his last movie was a failure. There was Achebe but the new generation has someone like Chimanada adiche to take over, with time Achebe and Soyinka will be history. I hate it when people claim, haa super eagles used to be the best in Africa, duh, your arrogance pulled you down and other nations came over you, so you are no more the best. I gettam before no be property.

My only regrets is when the younger generation that should stand against tribalism and ethnic hatred are the ones that carry it on their head. It's also more disturbing for someone who is young and grew abroad to be a closet tribalist. I'll give it anyday to my Sauron, Bawomolo, Debosky and Lucabrasi(You may wanna check their ages and generation and see for yourself that it's men with that kind of mind that will survive the test of time because they reason beyond their egba village). david Dylan would've made my list tho but he's yoruba is adulterated tongue tongue tongue.
Music/RadioRe: Why Do Igbo Artistes Sing In Yoruba? by StFunmi(f): 9:44pm On Mar 02, 2009
Um I already went thru this lame and tired question, Funmi. Read thru the thread before jumping in.

and how come Danny Boyle didnt find Indian kids that speak English for movie? Why didnt he just do the entire movie in English?
I hope you know slumdog millionaire was no block buster before this Oscar hit?. There are many things involved in making movies. Even the lame yoruba movie industry can win an oscar next year if you get the right funding and top hollywood director. Africa is still afr behind when it comes to issues like that. I am sick and tired of Yorubas trying to cast aspersion on Nollywood from claiming tribalism to how superior Yoruba movies are to nollywood but they are the first to tell you nollywoods newest release. Talk is cheap and I think you are trying to help them out the more by criticizing their movies instead of looking at yours.

My question to you is, are yoruba movies immuned from crappy ones?. Are they in the same standard as Bollywood?. If the answer is yes, then why are yoruba movies yet to cut across Africa alone talk less of the world?. This whining is getting out of hand and I think we should grow up.

You can never see any Hausa or kannywood  member complaining about Nollywood and that is because they are secure but how secure is the yoruba movie industry because they whine a lot over nollywood. If you don't like nollywood, ignore them and if your fears about them are true, they'll be out of business too.
Music/RadioRe: Why Do Igbo Artistes Sing In Yoruba? by StFunmi(f): 9:29pm On Mar 02, 2009
Be that as it may, it doesnt change the fact that people that dont understand Hindi wwatch these movies (Slumdog Millionair was 90% Hindi 10% English) so I refuse to fall for "oh but we make them speak English for others to understand". Hasnt stopped French, Japanese, South African movies from being critically acclaimed worldwide by those who dont speak these language so Nigeria had better find a better excuse for their shame.
If your assertion is true, why are Yoruba and hausa movies not making waves across Africa alone?. Truth be told, language is a barrier and the so called french and south african movies are still limited to their audience.

You are cutting the problem from the surface, just like our govt, infracstructure, education etc Nollywood is crippled by development which is why it's still at par with the indian industry. Nigeria is not a match to India when it comes to technology. Bollywood is old enough to be Nollywoods mother and so on.

Again, Is slumdog millionaire  really an indian movie?. British director, British producer, British marketer etc. It's almost like calling Blood Diamond a Sierra Leonian movie.

PoliticsRe: Why Are There So Many People In Nigeria Compared To Other Countries In Africa by StFunmi(f): 7:06pm On Mar 02, 2009
Abeg who wants to be a Nigerian? People are running away from the country.
I think it has always been because of our culture. Nigerians used to be polygamous with various concubines and for some reason, this has cause a crazy explosion in population. When you also look at the countries around us, you can understand how Nigeria seems like a better choice.
Polygamy is a standard practice in most African nations especially the muslim ones. So, why is the population in Nigeria growing in geometric progression?. And yes, people still want to be Nigerian no matter what.

IslamRe: Do Muslims Sing In The Mosque? by StFunmi(op): 6:55pm On Mar 02, 2009
I have said it before there is no uniform opinion as regards any type of music but certainly there is uniformity in against lewd, vulgar and shameful lyrics be it hip hop,R&B, Fuji , Juju woteva!!.

Some scholars have allowed music with sensible lyrics
Some have allowed music with restriction on the type of musical iinstruments allowed with the hand drum allowed.
Some have not allowed any instruments.

And Allah knows best!!
Do you have more ju'mah service music on youtube?

PoliticsRe: To Hell With Aso Rock: Pastor Tunde Bakare by StFunmi(op): 6:48pm On Mar 02, 2009
I agree with Pastor Bakare that it's more fruitful to "feed the flock" than to go dinning (in whatever guise) with a VP that may not be God fearing afterall. I mean what is the outcome of that meeting at the end of the day.

Compare that with one troubled believer whose spirit's been lifted from that day's sermon.
Don't mind lagosboy and Nuzo. cry cry cry

Osisi, nobody is been tribalistic here. Eating human parts is not strange in some Eastern parts and they are even very proud of it. I have I guy in my office and he's always proud to say they eat human parts in his home town. Therefore, it is a known fact. The issue of been tribalistic does not come to play at all.
And you are stupid enough to buy his story?. Isn't that same as what african do here in the states whenever Americans ask them silly questions like do you have cars over there?. I also know a guy that swore before them that they truly live on trees in Africa.

that is where the National ID card comes into play. It is just sad that not everyone has it.

Stop this ya yeye SSN. Not all countries use that.
Yet some Nigerians have 5 national ID's already with five different names. You see why numbers will be much more better?
PoliticsRe: Jos Crisis: Hausa Community Shuns Bola Ajibola Panel by StFunmi(op): 11:28am On Mar 02, 2009
I think it is better the Hausa community make their grievances known to the commission by appearing before the commission. Otherwise, whatever decisions the govt of Plateau State takes based on recommendations made by the commission shall be binding on them, whether favourable or not.
Wetin concern almajiri with your decision?. Their dagger is more important to them than your godamn decision.
