Religion / Church Arrests, Detains Saharareporters’ Publisher Sowore & Crew In Nigeria by stormm: 8:29am On Jan 06, 2013
Security and Task Force team at the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries, MFM, harassed, molested and detained illegally a renowned citizen journalist who attempted to report a New Year’s Eve crossover night service at the church headquarters along the popular Lagos-Ibadan express road.

Omoyele Mr. Sowore, publisher of Saharareporters, accompanied by Lagos-based citizen journalist, Segun O’Law another journalist, who report for the site from Lagos, stopped over at the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Church to cover the said crossover night service, but a joint task force of the church made up of personal church security, armed police and the State Security Service turned the church into a rights violation ground.

The journalists did a stopover at MFM, as they were hinted that the church has one of the largest gatherings within the city that night.

The crossover night event is one of numerous church services in which every church establishment gets its largest congregations in the night preceding the New Year, seeing the congregants waiting ecstatically with prayers for a new year of blessing and miracles.

But authorities of the church declined to respond to the allegations. A man who answered our reporter’s call declined comments, saying we should come physically to the church’s headquarters in Lagos for any enquiries. He insisted that the telephone number listed on the church’s website was meant for those interested in prayer consultation. He also declined to give his name.

“I can’t make any comment,” the official said. “Just come to our office and that is the only way we can respond to your enquiries.”

Mr. Sowore arrived the church bearing a 5D Canon Camera, with a frame holder on his shoulder. The accompanying citizen journalist, Mr. O’Law, held a dual purpose shots and video-taping mini Panasonic Camera.

Upon entering the church’s main gate, which outlooks the busy Lagos end of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, the crew moved into the auditorium and identified themselves to the security officers and ushers they encountered every inch of their way, and telling their mission.

The crew’s mission was to take photos and cover the crossover night service. Ushers and protocol officers allowed them in and motioned them towards the altar after scrutinizing their identity cards. But as Mr. Sowore reached the front of the General Overseer, Pastor D.K. Olukoya, who at that moment was giving his sermon, he was mobbed by several church Task Force officers guarding the altar, some of them wearing aprons with inscription ‘Prayer City Army’.

Mr. Sowore was then dragged to the back of the altar by a mob that threatened at first to smash his camera. The mob later handed him over to the police and the SSS operatives attached to the church.

Accompanying citizen journalist, Segun O’Law, rushed to the scene to identify Mr. Mr. Sowore as a journalist and explain the team’s mission to the church. By this time, a larger crowd had gathered behind the altar minutes as Mr. Sowore argued that he was only doing his job. The mob was unimpressed.

The argument attracted more church members, one of who ranted that he would wear down the Jesus in him and transform into Satan to kill Mr. Sowore.

For wearing neck beads designed of cowry shells (which he wears to showcase his ‘Africanness’), some of the church security operatives described Mr. Sowore as a ‘sinner’, ‘satan incarnate’, among other vilifying christening.

Moments later, the crew were pushed into a security van and whisked to a detention post within the church’s expansive premises. The Task Force, who had demanded Mr. Sowore’s identity card had also seized it, forcefully detained the crew and invited the Division Police Officer of Ibafo Police station, which oversees security in the area.

The D.P.O., upon arrival, inspected Mr. Sowore’s local identity card, which he uses as a special correspondent for one of the numerous Nigerian media he collaborates with. The D.P.O. confirmed it was genuine after making some calls through to the media office. The D.P.O. however disappeared after confirming who Mr. Sowore was, declared he would rather not get involved and advised the church to allow for amicable settlement to avoid possibly blowing the issue beyond reasonable proportion.

The church task force however adamantly refused. Instead, they repeatedly requested to delete the photos and video recordings in the cameras before releasing the devices and the journalists. The crew remained in the church detention for four hours.

Within the period of the journalists’ illegal detention, one of the MFM pastors in the task force emerged with a cane and attempted to flog Mr. Sowore, but he was cautioned. The pastor and his task force team members had to the sight of the two journalists, flogged, slapped and humiliated some teenage boys and girls who were arrested within the church premises for selling bible literatures, prayer books, printed praises and worship songs and sachet water.

The online advocacy and anti-corruption whistle-blowing website publisher was shocked when he realized that MFM maintains an illegal detention security post.

Mr. Sowore said his intention was to maintain a low profile all through, so as to experience what an ordinary journalist would go through, while fighting against authoritarian attitude of established local African institutions towards journalists.

The low profile style of Mr. Mr. Sowore however ended when one of the senior ministers in the church, who had spotted Mr. Sowore among the crowd behind the altar before they were whisked away to the detention post, waded in and enlightened the task force that Mr. Sowore was the publisher of the international advocacy site, Saharareporters.com.

The mobs, security and task force men quickly opened the website and googled Mr. Sowore’s name. They were weakened and pleaded that all footages taken in the church be deleted, but Mr. Sowore turned down their request.

The church had a crowd of about one million people at the service and series offerings, including ‘last offering for the year 2012’ and ‘first offering for the year 2013’ among others were obtained from the over one million crowd praying away their emotions in the night heralding the New Year.

On January 2nd, the crew also stopped by a festival of Masquerades while travelling through Ondo State to cover a traditional African masquerade dance in Erekiti. This time also,Mr. Mr. Sowore and his crew introduced themselves and presented same identity cards they showed the church security. The masquerades welcomed and warmed up to them. After their coverage, the crew contrasted between the attitudes of the MFM church and the masquerade practitioners in the same circumstances of filming an event of public interest.

The MFM church sits on massive hectares of land along the popular Lagos-Ibadan expressway. It also runs an expensive private university attached to it.

The church’s university, Mountain Top, is unaffordable to most of the offering-paying members of the MFM church, members say.

Some members of the Redeemed Christian Church of God and the Living Faith Church, otherwise known as Winners’ Chapel, also complained they cannot afford tuitions in the Redeemers’ University for Nations [RUN] and Covenant University [CU] respectively.

Universities founded by Islamic organisations are also believed to be too expensive than members can afford.

Before the emergence of the prosperity pentecostal churches, schools created by early churches were more affordable than most of the public schools, those who attended those schools said.

But there is now a reverse in the trend with schools owned by religious organisations now imposing overwhelming tuitions on students, encouraging state-owned institutions to increase their tuition by up to 200 percent to compete with expensive faith-based schools.

Business / Ifeanyi Ubah Is A Fraudster – Cosmas Maduka by stormm: 10:35am On Nov 05, 2012
Managing Director, Coscharis Group of Companies, Dr. Cosmas Maduka, has vowed to ensure that he collects back all the money due to him that Managing Director, Capital Oil and Gas Industries Limited, Mr. Ifeanyi Ubah, has allegedly fraudulently appropriated through a failed business transaction between the duo.

Maduka, in a statement Sunday from the Coscharis Group, which he owns, detailed his encounter with Ubah, saying he had entered into partnership with Ubah in response to his request for ehe entrepreneur to assist the oil dealer grow his business.

He also denied the allegation Ubah made last week that he and Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Access Bank Plc, Mr. Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, who chaired the Presidential Committee on Verification and Reconciliation of Fuel Subsidy Payments, were plotting to take over Capital Oil.

According to Maduka, the stage for the failed business transaction between him and Ubah was set during the celebration of his (Maduka’s) 50th birthday when the oil marketer, in the company of others, sought him out to assist with his business, explaining that he had been victimised by competitors and the banks.

“In spite of the numerous warnings against having anything to do with him, Maduka felt the urge to assist the young man because he felt no one could be as bad as he (Ubah) was being portrayed and after all Ubah is his kinsman from Nnewi,” the statement said.

The Coscharis Group highlighted some of the warnings its chairman, Maduka, was given against dealing with Ubah to include his failure to remit sales proceeds to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) after selling petroleum products stored in his tank farm; failure to remit sales proceeds to Mrs. Uju Ifejika, who had a through-put-arrangement with Ubah, after he had sold the petroleum product in his care; alleged refusal to settle his indebtedness to several banks; and his exposure to Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON), which has taken over his bank debts.
Maduka said because of Ubah’s reputation, no bank was ready to grant him credit and he had sought his assistance to help him access credit for his oil business.

“On the strength of this, Dr. Cosmas Maduka entered into a joint venture business agreement with Capital Oil (Ifeanyi Ubah) for the importation and sale of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

“The basis of the joint venture agreement was that Dr. Cosmas Maduka would provide the funding for the importation while Capital Oil would be responsible for the logistics, for the importation as well as handle the sale of PMS.
“Capital Oil’s role was therefore to provide its Petroleum Import Permits from the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) and The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) which are required to import PMS into Nigeria.
“Capital Oil would also source the products, open Letters of Credits to the supplier who must deliver the product to Capital Oil storage tank in Nigeria, arrange for the sale of the product in Nigeria, and pay the proceeds and subsidy element into the joint venture account to repay the loan obtained by Dr. Maduka,” the statement added.

Maduka’s greatest mistake was to believe that Ubah was a reformed character despite his track record of allegedly defrauding several persons, as shortly after the business transaction was sealed, he revealed his true character, the group said.
According to the statement, based on the agreement, Capital Oil covenanted that Coscharis Motors would be entitled to immediate possession of the products while the oil company would lease the tanks in which the products would be sold to Coscharis, as part of measures to ensure that Coscharis had proper storage for the products that Capital Oil had pre-sold to it, based on the agreement.

“This agreement provided for an account to be opened into which Capital Oil would domicile proceeds of subsidy collected by way of Sovereign Debt Notes for the products imported, which together with proceeds of the sale of the products would be used to repay the bank’s credit facility,” Coscharis said.

The company explained that given the fact that all the banks approached to finance the deal refused to have anything to do with Capital Oil, Maduka approached Access Bank for a facility to fund the importation of petrol.
The bank, the company added, consented and later raised the facility granted to Coscharis Motors to $164 million to accommodate additional requests by Ubah and Capital Oil for additional importation, leading to the opening of 10 Letters of Credits (L/Cs) that were established and fully negotiated.

“However, shipments were made and products were partially received for six out of the 10 Letters of Credit while products for the remaining four Letters of Credit established for the importation of 130,000 metric tonnes of petrol were not delivered at all,” it explained further.

The statement said even for the six L/Cs for which shipment was made, not all the products were delivered to the tank farm as expected by Capital Oil while there was no delivery of products for the remaining four L/Cs.
It said when the petrol that was expected to be discharged into Capital Oil’s tank farm at Ibafon, Lagos, did not arrive as scheduled and the company could not satisfactorily explain the delay, Maduka knew that Capital Oil in collusion with shippers had diverted the product.

“This belief is strengthened by the fact that under Letters of Credit, the products covered by the Bills of Lading were supposed to have been delivered within three weeks from the date of the Bills of Lading (on or before January, 2012) but till today, the products have not been seen,” the statement said.
“Capital Oil’s diversion of these products in collusion with the shippers has made the repayment of the facility scheduled to come from the sales proceeds impossible.

“Accordingly, the exposure to Access Bank Plc stands at about N21 billion while interest accrues. Also, Capital Oil has refused to release the 56,568,587.11 litres of PMS in the designated tank for this transaction under the management of our warehousing agent in its tank farm for disposal to facilitate the payment of our financial obligation to Access Bank,” Coscharis added.
The perceived fraud, Coscharis explained, compelled Maduka to petition the Special Fraud Unit (SFU) of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), which invited the duo to give statements and was followed by interrogations.

Maduka, the company said, has vowed to collect every farthing owed by Ubah, adding: “Ifeanyi Ubah may have defrauded the Federal Government and other individuals and gone free but given the fact that I earned every kobo through my sweat, I will collect my money to the very last kobo.

“Allowing a fraudster of this magnitude off the hook will send wrong signal to the international community about the sincerity of the government’s prosecution of the anti-corruption campaign. I vow to pursue this matter to the end.”
The company’s chairman observed that the alleged fraud perpetuated by Ubah was similar to the destruction of Banco Noroeste, the Brazilian bank that was defrauded to the tune of $242 million by Mr. Emmanuel Nwude, Mrs. Amaka Anajemba and other accomplices in a space of three years.
“I and my family will fight with everything to ensure that Ubah repays all the money he owes me. God is my witness,” he said.

Update: I have been reliably informed that Mr Olayinka, a journalist, and the Chief Press Officer to the National Vice Chairman of PDP SW, Chief Segun Oni, who was arrested yesterday, 09/10/12, by policemen attached to the Ekiti state Govt House remains in detention. Available information is that he was tortured, dragged on the ground, subjected to inhuman and degrading treatment by these policemen. He has so far been denied access to medical treatment for his injuries sustained at the hands of the Ekiti state Govt House security men. It is unbelievable and unacceptable for a journalist to be so subjected to such level of brutality and degrading treatment in a democratic Nation like Nigeria.. This is an affront on democracy , freedom and free speech that must be condemned, resisted by all well meaning Nigerians. Ekiti people and Nigerians will hold Ekiti state Gov. Dr Kayode Fayemi and the ACN leadership responsible for this affront on Mr Olayinka's freedom and fundamental human rights. We are using this medium to appeal to the IGP and the Ekiti state CP to ensure that Mr Olayinka is no longer subjected to any form of maltreatment physically or psychologically, granted access to medical treatment, access to legal services, and released immediately and unconditionally , without further delay.

When on September 15, 2012, Ugochukwu Ozuah, married Joan, his girlfriend of nearly two years; family and friends rejoiced with them at The Redeemed Evangelical Mission, Lagos.

The 36-year-old man and Joan then stayed at the Whispering Palms, a beach resort in Badagry, for three days for their honeymoon.

The couple’s joy was however cut short on September 20, 2012, when the groom was allegedly shot and killed by policemen attached to the Anthony Division.

Ozuah, an indigene of Anambra State and Mechanical Engineering Graduate of the University of Ado Ekiti, was allegedly killed close to the UPS Bus Stop along Oworonsoki-Oshodi Expressway while dropping his friend off.

My point is this let the police investigate the case and our claims. It is not enough for the IG to sit in Abuja and exonerate his men. I as a friend of Ugo, stand by our story. He was shot by a policeman without the slightest provocation.

And I maintain, for those who make reckless and unguarded statements about a person they do not know or an event they did not witness, may they be killed 5 days after their wedding.

I think folks here should be careful in their contributions. Ugo is a personal friend of about a year and people should be cautious before spewing their gibberish on people or events they know nothing about. Ugo is a young man that recently finished his Msc in Unilag. He got a job for which he should resume in October 2012 after several months of being without a job

A thoroughly detribalised young Nigerian, he moved into the house around UPS area, Gbagada after he got back from his 3-day honeymoon on Wednesday. Only for the police to kill on on Thursday.

Please, lets be mindful of other people's sensibilities and not doubt the veracity of this particular story. I am personally touched because, I saw him that day around 4pm. He was in the company of the same friend mentioned in the story. The friend came in from the UK to attend Ugo's wedding. And they met again when he came back from his honeymoon.

The Director General does no take into consideration the policy on approval limit and threshold issued by the Bureau of public procurement and thus, approved various expedition beyond her approval limit of N2.5million.
For example, she approved N7,384,006.25 in December, 2011 for media publicity support for the maiden Capital Market retreat in Uyo Akwa-Ibom State. (See anex 3A & 3B). She also approved N10,179,00 paid to Message Wise Limited without evidence of due process in awarding the contract for assisting the Security and Exchange Commission on a 3-day issuer/investor outreach programme in Port Harcourt, River State (see anex 4A & 4B).
The Director General also approved for herself a two rent of N66million for her Official residence at Maitaima District. The house for which the rent was approved was not known to anybody in the Commission and thus there was no prior inspection of the house before payment was made.
Subsequently, the Director General further directed that additional payment of 66million be made to make it four years rent for the unknown property. The attention of the Director General was drawn to the Federal Government Monetization policy urging her to return the initial payment of N66million to the Commission, but she did not take it kindly. This is a proof that the Director General whimsically take decisions that exposes the Commission to enormous financial implications without due process.

I am not a fish farmer but got close to them enough to be able to contribute here. Like somebody said, the pond is a fixed asset. But there is no way you will ever get 100% of your initial purchase of the fingerlings to grow and weigh the same. It is very possible to buy a thousand pieces and not realise up to 400kg over a period of 6 months. Infection is also a major problem of fish farming and sometimes mortality rate can be high when not properly looked after.

If you are in Lagos, you can save money on feeds by going to Agege(beside the abattoir), they'll teach you to mix and pellet your feeds by yourself

bashr8: Osun State Government has accused the Olagunsoye Oyinlola administration of spending N450m to pull down a state-owned hotel.

Bolorunduro recalled that the Oyinlola administration embarked on white elephant projects of building six stadia while the education, health, transport and water sectors suffered.

He said, “It’s only a visionless PDP government like that of Oyinlola that could go cap in hand to borrow N18.38bn and use a chunk of the money to build stadia when a majority of the people languished in abject poverty.”
