Politics / Re: The Crime Wave Impacting British Of Nigerian Descent by strangerf: 1:21pm On Apr 25, 2012
Katsumoto: @ Cap28

People move from London to the exterior for many reasons but usually to have more room for the same price for what they can get in London. I know someone who moved from Hyde park to Surrey to have more room and less noise and he isn't even married. Others move for schools; there may be blacks who move to be closer to white folks but generally, most do not do that.Besides the white folks in Essex are different from the white folks you will find in Surrey or Berkshire. You will find many Nigerians who live in the suburbs who still travel into London for association, hanging out, parties. Not many move to the suburbs to start hanging out at the pub on Friday. They are likely to be at 805, Presidential, Mama Calabar, Tomi's kitchen, etc When you do find Black folks in white clubs, pubs, they are hunting and you can't blame anyone for hunting. grin grin grin

I have a question and it may seem like a rhetorical question but it isn't. If you feel so strongly about the white establishment in the UK, why do you keep living there? Anyone who feels as strongly as you do should be doing more than trying to educate others on the Internet. Similarly, I don't think a black folk should complain too much about opportunities in the UK considering the UK affords more opportunities than all of Africa put together for the African. I believe that the UK offers a black person the opportunity to make something of himself but I still believe there are more opportunities in the US. I believe there is a glass ceiling in the UK for black professionals. That glass ceiling, however, makes some to strive to be better skilled and educated which may or may not lead to rewards. Thats just my opinion.

Quoted for posterity

Jarus: Corporate communications(or special assistants) unit write speeches, but they will collaborate with Research to supply facts and figures. Isn't that well known? A CBN governor cannot be preparing his speeches, except when he decides to talk extempore like the CFA talk.

That would be true if we were here talking about speeches to be presented to the Senate, President, House of Assembly, Foreign investors and other high-level speeches where the CBN governor was representing Nigeria.

This particular speech was presented at a commencement gathering. No one forced him to deliver the speech. He went there in his private capacity, not as the CBN governor. He alone is responsible for the content.
Politics / Re: CBN's Lamido Sanusi Sued For Plagiarism by strangerf: 8:52am On Apr 25, 2012
Speeches contain facts, figures, tables, data, do they not?

Yeah, all speeches contain a bit of all of that

So at a minimum one might speculate that somebody else is responsible for assembling that data, not him.

Why cant that somebody be Sanusi? Its a commencement speech, not some high-level presentation to foreign investors . . .

Unless we expect him to be pecking away at his computer looking for it himself...

He alone knows what to be included in the speech and the form the speech would take, he knows where to find the data and I expect him to "peck" away as long as the "pecking" is done in his spare time/off duty hours.

Now, does that mean he didn't write the plagiarized material, that it was someone else?

Only he and those involved know for sure.

If he didnt write this particular speech, is it safe to assume that he didnt write his other speeches? So all publicly available speeches credited to Sanusi are in fact not from Sanusi. He is just the reader . . . you see where this is going? So he really doesnt believe "The Yoruba have become Nigeria’s wailing tribe, detaching themselves from the rest of the country and alienating the people they hope to rule; abusing other Nigerians through their vociferous media and hoping for votes from the same Nigerians on ballot day?" And his articles on Fuel subsidy?
http://www.gamji.com/sanusi/sanusi2.htm

So how do we differentiate between what is written by Sanusi that is publicly credited to Sanusi versus What is credited to Sanusi witten by this "ghost" research department? The research department so redundant they have time to write the CBN governor's commencement (personal) speech. WHat else do they do for him that we dont know about, yet funded by the tax payers.
Politics / Re: CBN's Lamido Sanusi Sued For Plagiarism by strangerf: 8:27am On Apr 25, 2012
Jarus: Why will a Central Bank not have a research unit?

A research unit for the CBN writing Sanusi's speech?

Jarus, does that make sense to you?

I can't tell if you're joking or being pessimistic, but what is clear is that the CBN governor a) doesn't understand how to properly cite other people's work and b) doesn't understand the simple phrase "potable water" despite being a Foucault-reading, Marx-quoting "philosopher".

@ Onlytruth, yeah, I totally missed it. Sanusi's statement is close, but slightly altered so my search was too exact and I didn't come across the quote.

We’ll stop and search Aregbesola’s convoy, says Omisore
By Adesoji Adeniyi, Osogbo 23/04/2012 02:15:00

Omisore

A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain in Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore, has threatened to stop and search the convoy of Governor Rauf Aregbesola.
The former lawmaker alleged that the governor was not using men of the State Security Service (SSS) for his security personnel. He addressed reporters in his Ile-Ife home at the weekend.
Omisore said: “We will stop his convoy, search and remove all the arms his thugs are using.
“It is unethical to use thugs as security. Aregbesola should explain why he goes about with thugs. During the last elections, he rigged with the aids of thugs, but this time round, we are ready for him.
“Who wants to kill him? (Asiwaju Bola) Tinubu is more important than he is. He is a common radio technician. If Aregbesola does not trust the SSS, let him resign. We are going to stop his convoy and search him.
“His action is an embarrassment. He is just one of the 36 governors; how can his case be different? Tinubu was governor for eight years, he did not use thugs as security.
“Together with Aregbesola we were in the Alliance for Democracy (AD). We know ourselves very well. Aregbesola was just one of the thugs shouting outside when we held crucial meetings. If not for Justice Ayo Salami, whose judgment favoured Aregbesola and he is now paying for it by being at home wasting away, who knew Aregbesola?”
The former senator said it was not an allegation that Aregbesola was training and using members of the Osun Youth Empowerment Scheme (OYES) to commit alleged electoral fraud.
He vowed “to crush any OYES member found in any voting centre in the next elections”.
According to him, the politics promoted by the PDP in the Southwest from 2003 to 2011 brought succour to the zone and would advance the Yoruba interest faster than the regional integration of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).
But the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Sunday Akere, asked in what capacity Omisore would act, if he plans to stop and search the governor’s convoy.
Describing Omisore’s outburst as a direct confrontation, Akere said: “We shall see how he will do that and get away with it.”
The commissioner, who said no harm must come to the governor, noted that the former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Chief Bola Ige, was murdered despite the security provided for him by the government.
He said: “If Omisore should be bold to say he would search the governor’s convoy, the whole world should note it. And we are demanding that no harm should happen to the governor. We don’t want to take him for granted.”
Akere said the PDP was a bad loser for referring to OYES instead of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the superintendent of elections.
He added that the PDP had performed abysmally.

Well, I hope it is that simple.
Lagos is the one city where Igbo have their biggest investment. My hunch is that they would try to have a peaceful resolution to issues of citizenship. They would want to stay there (at least initially), and would only leave willingly after Biafra or Alaigbo offers something better (which will happen in the future). The problem is that some Yoruba elements may attempt something funny before that peaceful departure.

You mean like Katsumoto? Trust me, that niggerrr has NO liver. There is no way he is leaving his ghetto abode in the UK for some unpredictable Odua cause. He is like Ekt Bear, they like to make noise . . . we know them.

Nwannem I think Lagos will, by default, be part and parcel of Oduaa. The only thing I see is that its status as the financial center of West Africa will take a giant hit as all the new nations will be racing to the top. In the end things will level off and we all will be fine. ekt_bear is very optimistic and there's nothing wrong with it. You know, the easiest way to fail is to fail before you begin.

Anyway, for us in the East it'll be good riddance to bad rubbish, we've not benefited anything from this nation since 1967 so who cares if Nigeria breaks into 1000 tiny bits. What I do know is that in the end people who're culturally compatible will make alliances and do their thing while those that are incompatible will go their separate ways.

Not true, Lagos belongs to everyone!

That's so not true, my first degree was from OAU so I know Ife, Oshogbo and Ilesha are not villages but towns. Those towns have villages but they are usually far from the city centre and you could travel up to an hour in some cases to get there. Although, I can't speak for the other places I haven't been to in Osun state.

Okay so I lived there for a significant amount of time. The only industry in Ife is OAU, once you step out of campus, what is left looks like a village to me. Same with Osogbo.
