A family that is prepared to kill their child for monetary gain will be prepared to sell their children. In the next few years as the Nigerian economy continue to tank, many greedy and unscrupulous Nigerians will revert to mass slave trade.

The type of power plant matters a lot. In the case of Siemens I think that was gas powered plants. They are much cheaper because of the technology involved. As for hydro, it requires lots of on site contruction and building of water turbines and also the settlement of displaced people. The construction part adds to the cost of hydro technology. In the case of Nigeria, they borrowed money from China and that attracts interest. I'm thinking the deal is more like hire purchase deal where you buy now and pay a huge sum over the years - something like what car dealers are doing.
Ethiopia Grand Millennium Dam will cost $4.8 billion and generate 6GW two time Nigeria capacity at less the cost.

$6 billion will generate 10 GW using Siemen combine cycle power plant which can be delivered in less than 3 years.

Originally, in 2011, the hydropower plant was to receive 15 generating units with 350 MW nameplate capacity each, resulting in a total installed capacity of 5,250 MW with an expected power generation of 15,128 GWh per annum.[29] However, due to the upgrading of the power plant and the housing facilities, its generation capacity was uplifted to 6,000 MW from 5,250 MW, with a power generation of 15,692 GWh per annum through 16 generating units with 375 MW nameplate capacity each. In 2017, the design was again changed to add another 450 MW, with a power generation of 16,153 GWh per annum.[4][30] That was achieved by upgrading 14 of the 16 generating units from 375 MW to 400 MW without changing the nameplate capacity

The estimated US$4.8 billion construction cost, apparently excluding the cost of power transmission lines, corresponds to about 5% of Ethiopia's gross domestic product of US$87 billion in 2017.

Africa should consider the nuclear option for its energy needs? Hmmmm...... that's not only scary but it doesn't make sense for now. Nukes have the following challenges

1. They are very expensive: Have you seen the costs of nuclear power projects across the world? The price can go as high as 6 dollar per a watt if you pay for it without borrowing. If you need some financing, then it's going to be as high as 10 dollar per a watt. Just an example: the United Kingdom is currently having a Hinkley C power plant being built in sommerset. That plant costs about 23 billion pounds. The initial price is just around 18 billion pounds but it was later revised to 23 billion pounds so that the project could be completed in time. Whats the power rating of hinkley C? Just 3 gigawatts. Now compare that to the planned Mambilla hydro power project costing just 6 billion dollars with a capacity of 3 gigawatts costing just around 6 billion dollars!!!!! For now african countries don't have the financial horsepower to fund a nuclear power plant project.

2. They are quite risky: Anything goes wrong with nuclear and you will be looking at an almost irreparable damage and reputation. For now, the nuclear tech currently in use are not advisable since they generate long term waste (lasting millions of years). Even in developed countries, where to dump the nuclear waste is currently being challenged and communities in the us are protesting against it.

The only good thing about nuclear power is the fact that they have an almost perfect capacity factor (producing power round the clock 24 hours in a day 7 days in a week) This is unlike natural gas, nuclear, wind, hydro or solar energy systems which could run out of "fuel" for the long term. Yes, it is true that nukes don't emit carbon, but they have far more dangerous waste that could last for an eternity.
The Mambilla hydropower project costing just 6 billion dollars with a capacity of 3 gigawatts is over price . Siemen supplied 3 x 4.8GW power plants to Egypt at the cost of $9billion. Ethiopia Millennium hydroelectric dam will cost $4 billion and generate 6GW

Winning POWER’s highest honor is a set of three gas-fired power plants and related infrastructure — the Egypt Megaproject — which was the single biggest order ever in Siemens’ long history. Completed in a record-setting 27.5 months from financial closure, the three plants added 14.4 GW to Egypt’s power grid, heaving the country away from persistent power shortages that would have crippled industrial growth and setting it firmly en route to long-term power security.

But if we allow private sector to pioneer it with strict policy, it has better chance of improved efficiency.
Private sectors cannot function without an effective governance platform to ensure governance, standards and regulation. The reason why the private energy sector (refineries, oil exploitation and power supply) is in complete meltdown, is due to lacks good governance, leadership and institutions.

Jonathan tried to remove subsidy in less than 1 year after he was elected. That tells you how serious he was about putting the right policies in place.

GEJ didn't try at all. He let down his ministers and his government.

You clearly ignored the production output aspect!

Your claims on the power plants isn't true, there were several power plants he increased capacity from the previously planned output. According to what we were told under late Yar'Adua, $16billion allotted for power by Obasanjo disappeared without anything to show for it.

Under Jonathan there was salary increment for the civil service, subsidy payments increased significantly in the government's bid to avoid product scarcity, the CBN had bail out banks.

Blaming Jonathan for not "saving " is wrong!
He did all within his constitutional powers to make that possible but Nigerians and their governors refused.

Russia built up her massive reserves only after 2016.
The problem in Nigeria is that we are not one, if Jonathan was a Fulani man he would have probably gotten the political support he deserved to change things.
You just confirmed my position, GEJ wasted the increase in oil price and reserves on wasteful consumption and subsidies.

In 2012 he had the chance to cut subsidies but backed out against the advice of his senior ministers. What kind of government increase workers salaries in 2013 and then starts borrowing to pay workers salaries in 2015.

Even you can't deny that GEJ government has no logic, only 5% of Nigerian work for the government so increasing their salaries doesn't even make political sense.

By 2015 ...

Nigerian govt borrowing billions to pay salaries – Okonjo-Iweala

In the face of dwindling oil revenues, Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said the Federal Government has borrowed about N473billion to pay salaries and fund the 2015 budget.

Despite past efforts to reduce government borrowing level, she said the acute cash flow problems forced the government to take the decision to curb the negative impact of revenue crunch.

The Minister said about N380billion came from external sources, while the balance is for domestic borrowing.

You are either ignorant or deliberately trying to be mischievous! In the history of Nigeria no one has built as many power plants as Jonathan did in 5 years.

Oil legislation is passed by parliament and not the president or petroleum minister. That is the area the Fulani and their lookalike core Northern brethren come to fore. Diezani tried all she could to make them see the benefit of passing the PIB, all to no avail because of Fulani short sightedness.

You fail to also add the fact that oil output was down by a 3rd when GEJ took over. Politicians like Amaechi, Oshimole and Fashola sued Jonathan to court for his attempts to create financial buffers.

If the core North wasn't part of Nigeria, Nigeria would have been, at the very least, a middle income country like Ghana or Kenya.
I wouldn't insult you and I am not ignorant.

You are correct that both Fashola and Amaechi bullied GEJ to access the $32 billion excess crude oil funds and wasted the funds on state consumption and corruption. The five power plants were all bought and paid for by OBJ government, between 2006 and 2007 and delivered by GEJ

But GEJ government still had access to high oil prices plus $68 billion in reserves and less than $5 billion external debts.

Angola and Eq Guinea have the same problem with Nigeria, one person or one family wanted to control all sectors of the country.

if Fulani's and Hausa are removed from Nigeria then Nigeria's population is cut by half which means southern Nigeria Per Capita income will be over $6000 annually compared to the over $2000 it currently stands out. plus the other investments southern Nigeria will invest into.

OBJ left close to £100 billion and low external debts, it was left to yardua and gej to boost the economy and infrastructure. Obj's goal was to steady Nigeria's economy after years of military rule, he didn't invest heavily in infrastructural projects.

the Ijaws and Igbos according to history, always squander opportunities that can boost the economy and infrastructure of their regions, but if you remove Fulani's and Hausa and Yoruba they will have much more to spend on their regions.

most of Nigeria's money comes from the oil rich eastern Nigeria, revenues that will be spent for a population of over 140m people will now be spent for a population less than 50m and those revenues will remain the same.

with or without the Fulani's and Hausa and Yoruba, eastern Nigeria will still have at least a £300 - £400 billion economy, they just need to learn to squandering opportunities.
Chief,

If Yoruba's, Igbo's and Ijaw's have their own nation, one family will control all the wealth just look at Lagos state and Tinubu.

The best time to demonstrate that the South will be better without the North is now with the North as the opposition, but I have not seen any evidence that they will be better off without the North.

Regional Southern leaders have failed to mobilise their regions to improve roads, rails and power construction despite being blessed with the majority of Nigerians in the diaspora. Ethiopia was able to build the $4 billion Millennium II dam by issuing bonds to Ethiopian in Europe and USA, Eritrea entire economy is based on direct remittance to their government.

The Lagos state government cannot even finish the Blue rail line without a loan from the federal government, yet Tinubu has three private jets valued at close to $200 million

You mean blade propelled scam when everyone is flying jet turbo now grin
This must've been dug up from ww1 archives museum grin

NB :they should invest in drones instead of flying coffins
Have you considered the cost of building expense runway and using jet fuel? Turbo -Prop fighter are cheap and easy to manoeuvre and operate.

the problem is not just the "leaders". its their goals..

they (in this case the fulanis) want to own and control all sectors of the economy, they have the "If its not owned by someone from my ethnicity then no one should own it" mentality.

meanwhile, if the ijaws, efiks, igbos, yorubas e.t.c... were allowed to extract oil in their oil producing states and the FG takes a percentage Nigeria will have been better. they want one person to control agriculture, politics, economics e.t.c..

nothing can reset their empty heads... it is also in the interests of some foreign countries that Nigeria remains a "corrupt country" so that they proudly say Nigeria is a fastastic corrupt country and other stereotypes they can think of.

even this covid19 will be used to stereotype Africans... All the foreigners that they interview on international news always say Africa will be the hardest hit.

its not just the leaders its also the external interests they are working for..
Is Angola or Eq Guinea any better than Nigeria today, they are both majority Christian countries with an oil rental economy and both fantastically corrupt and backward like Nigeria.

Remove the Fulani's and Hausa from Nigeria and Nigeria will still remain poor and backward as long as it operates an oil rental economic, the rental economy is the reason why we have many useless states and government departments.

Why didn't OBJ sort out the energy issues in his eight years in government, I will cut OBJ some slack as he left close to £100 billion in reserve and low external debts.

GEJ was an Ijaw, he had an Ijaw as minister of petroleum resources and an Igbo finance minister, how many power plants did they build despite $62 billion in reserve , oil price at $100.00 p/b and $36 billion in reserve. $15 billion would add 15GW to Nigeria electric grid.

This is true. On a different thread, someone with a recent bachelor's GIS qualification was not aware that GIS has moved on from just regular surveying to Python programming and databases. I was shocked at first but then realise he genuinely was not aware. I still don't know how to reply to a question he raised on how to bypass his deficiencies in programming.
Maybe those with the profile you suggested can also help with training. I remember power improved a bit when Barth Nnaji was a minister.
Madam Ngozi too was not used to her full capacity.
The likes of Ngozi and Barth Nnaji are the academic that Nigeria must avoid, to much hot air and no substance, Iweala wasted her good record under OBJ to become a rubber stamp minister that tolerated GEJ excesses. Barth Nnaji was brilliant academically but greedy, a minister responsible for Nigeria power resources also involved in building his own utility company. I am interested in Nigerians that are Chief Architect, Chief Engineers, COO, CEO and Directors in private sector organisations.
