ednut1: the world as you have it today is a western concept. Africa was never meant to be developed . Imagine i need a loan to do poulty gtb would give me at 22%. But in the uk i can get it at 3%. Will ship it to nigeria through cotonou and its still cheaper than the nigerian ones. Corn cannot grow in a desert except there is irrigation in the desert. Government is the irrigation
The excuse of a Nigerian
Nigeria culture evolution is the reason why the country has failed to develop. Nigeria cultures whether its Yoruba, Hausa, Fulani or Igbo bring out the worst in any ideologies (Islam, Christianity and Western modernity)
Powersurge: Well, I was born in a place worse than this. My primary education was in that place. Today I am a graduate from one of the first generation federal universities.
The journey is far from palatable. But when your government fails you, try not to fail yourself. I am not where I need to be but I am definitely far from whence I started.
To everyone trying to weather the storm, may God be for you, a light when other lights have gone out. God's speed!!!
Powersurge, I hope you fulfil your journey and become a leader of change. An animal should not be living in Makoko.
Na wa for Nigerian useless parents, Government pays teachers teaching your own children, they build the schools buy the stationery and still provide feeding for some..
yet this good for nothing useless nigerian parents cant get their children mere chiars and tables .... And they can drink ogogoro and fvck all day
anyways kudos to the NYSC corper God would continue uplifting him ...
Why should tax-paying parent pay for chairs and tables?
The responsibilities for the children parents is to provide books, uniforms and food to the children. The parent should also be member of the Parent-Teacher Associate -PTA and contribute to the social welfare of the teachers and school students.
geosegun: Why should he be ashamed? You and I know that most establishments of government is very corrupt including most citizens. Even you, have also been involved in one corruption or the other, either directly or indirectly. So Alli is calling a spade a spade.
The problem has to be corrected 1. by discouraging patronage of smuggled cars and 2. closing the borders where smuggled cars thrive. 2 has been achieved successfully and hence the achievement of daily revenue generation averaging 5Billion Naira.
The 1st has to be achieved too by discouraging you and I, including well meaning citizens from buying smuggled products. By that, we can grow the country economy together holistically. Once a potential buyer knows that He will still pay, a whopping fine by buying/using a smuggled product, such will desist from patronizing smugglers and this will discourage every smuggler out there killing our economy.
Nigerians and their entitlement mentality. You want the economy to thrive like that of the US or the Europeans and you don't want policies that encourages such? you want to eat your cake and still have it. Sense fall on all of you.
If he said 30% of the cars were smuggled then it can be considered an operational problem, but at 90% where do you start to find solution.
It doesn't help when the president ignores the judiciary institutions that he should be supporting. When the legal institutions are compromised, it affects other security institutions such as the customs office.
Ify05: The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Col. Hameed Ali (rtd), on Thursday said 90 per cent of cars in the country were smuggled into the country by unscrupulous elements and Custom Officers.
geosegun: You have to start form some where. learn to craw, first , then walk, then , run , then you fly....you that can not manage a manual process effectively. you want to start with automation? This is a good move from the President. It is one of the best thing that have happened in this dispensation.
But, why build a $15 billion monstrosity like Ajaokuta Steel plant, that requires multiple operational inputs such as energy, when you can't operate a simple electricity power plant.
You craw by building the energy capacity, then the logistics( roads, rail and ports), then the mines and then small steel fabrication units and finally viable steel plant. Let's learn from the mistakes of the past.
chukel: guy, what is it. Stop being rigid and understand what these guys are saying. Steel may be a finished product, but it's still a raw material for production of other stuff needed in manufacturing industry
Steel is an industrial product or component in the manufacturing industry, I have 25 years in the manufacturing space especial in supply chain and materials for large European automobile manufacturers and I have never used the word "raw material" in relation to steel or any product in the automobile industry.
Steel is usually produced on demand, the tensile strength of steel has to be agreed before supplied.
9jaRealist: Ajaokuta Steel and NIOMC Itakpe are DIFFERENT entities... Beneficiation at Itakpe has NOTHING to do with the energy efficiency of the Ajaokuta steel plant. >
I am well aware that the Itakpe mine is a separate entity, but as I have illustrated before the concentrate grade is of low-quality iron ore will require more energy demand, but if the energy inefficiency issues can be overcome, then I have no objection to Itakpe mine.
The Simandou mine is a large iron mine located in the Simandou mountain range of southern Guinea's Nzérékoré Region. Simandou represents one of the largest iron ore reserves in Guinea and in the world, having estimated reserves of 2.4 billion tonnes of ore grading 65% iron metal https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simandou_mine
9jaRealist: Technology has made beneficiation an energy efficient process...
Nigeria initially invested in mines in Liberia and Guinea until they were depleted... Then we started importing from Brazil, but beneficiation has since proven considerably CHEAPER.
Btw, there is a wide disparity in the quality of Nigerian iron ore (even in Itakpe)... As the Australians discovered when they ventured into Nigeria, it ranges from 32%Fe up to 70%Fe. >
Like I said before, Ajaokuta is not energy efficient, the blast furnace requires constant electricity operate, an operation that is beyond the capability of Nigerian.
The Thermal Power Plant The Thermal Power Plant (TPP) which is a Captive Power Plant has two turbo-generators of 55MW each with a full capacity of 110MW. It supplies electricity to the steel plant and the steel township. The Steel plant cannot do without constant power supply due to the types of equipment which need cooling to maintain its lifespan. The blast furnace uses electricity and as earlier discussed if lit, it will remain on for about ten years and it needs this power to keep it on. The Ajaokuta Steel Plant cannot exhaust the 110 MW produced. It actually consumes about 65MW. At a time, the excess was sold to the national grid but due to non-maintenance and lack of gas, the plants do not supply to the national grid any longer. Are you for real? Raw materials do not just include unprocessed stuffs but also the core requirement for the production of certain tech. That way I can say for petrochemical coys, the late stage products of crude oil refineries are raw materials. Without them, there is nothing like petrochemicals. The word 'raw material' has evolved bro. Not just something mined or drilled!
Use the correct terminology when discussing technology and manufacturing subjects.
Refined oil is an industrial product, crude oil is the raw material. The word "Raw Material" hasn't evolved beyond what it was created for. Please accept that you are wrong and move on.
He said 'raw material in some industrial products' not a raw material in steel production?
Or steel is never needed before making some industrial products?
You're disappointing me this morning!!!
Steel should not be used in the context of "raw material". Steel is an industrial product or component of industrial production.
Raw Material: the basic material from which a product is made.
Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon, and sometimes other elements. Because of its high tensile strength and low cost, it is a major component used in buildings, infrastructure, tools, ships, automobiles, machines, appliances, and weapons.
9jaRealist: Hence the beneficiation process... When it’s working properly, it’s CHEAPER than importation ($65 vs $89 per ton). >
Low-grade iron ore will require more processing energy to refine the material into steel. Steel manufacturing is dependent on energy efficiency to work as a viable business, access to cheap electricity such as natural gas, followed by logistics (ports, rail, road and manufacturing hubs) provide added value.
Nigeria should focus on being higher up the industrial value chain, let Guinea Republic supply the good quality raw material, Nigeria will manufacturer the steel.
9jaRealist: Not necessarily, that’s why there’s a beneficiation plant at Itakpe... Further, the bigger mines being exploited by the Australians at Agbaja has ore of 65% Fe. >
Itakpe mine has low-grade Iron Ore. It will be less costly to import Iron Ore from Guinea
Itakpe represents one of the largest iron ore reserves in Nigeria and in the world having estimated reserves of 3 billion tonnes of ore grading 32% iron metal.[1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Itakpe_mine
Opexzy: Steel is an integral raw material in some industrial products... This will be a plus to the economy of they succeed and not just another audio company or investment
Steel is not a raw material!
Iron ore, coal\coke or natural gas are the raw materials for the production of Steel. Nigeria has low-quality coke and iron ore hence the iron ore and coke will have to be imported, although coke can be replaced with the GAS.
Ajaokuta Steel technology is out of date in the era of robotics and automation, energy efficiency is paramount and the antiquated Russian built Ajaokuta steel plant will not work in the 21st century. Nigeria should scrap the Ajaokuta steel plant and turn the site into a technology park for new technology such as semiconductors, biotechnology and AI.
Small automated steel plants, like the old Delta Steel plant, can replace Ajaokuta Steel.
Freeko4: Dis is the problem with Nigerians, instead of dem to criticize the bad move by the governor, but jus as I foretold dey re here defending party affiliation..... If the needful is not done soonest Nigeria will neva be great.... Shalom
It is not a bad move, taxing business is the correct move.
Stan2330: The worst is in abia state....the levy imposed by the governor on the traders, you will think he is not from abia state Tufiakwa
How do you expect the State government to generate revenues?
Traders and Okada are generating profits, its the responsibility of the state government to tax their profit and incomes to provide social services. Nigerian want something for nothing
24. Lagos State Lagos, sometimes referred to as Lagos State to distinguish it from Lagos Metropolitan Area, is a state in the southwestern geopolitical zone of Nigeria.
Day2logic: Protest is not the solution to Nigerian problem, we can try revolution but only if we have the northern youth on our side. Maybe if we can dabaru everything and then the world power come to rearrange this country, I don’t see a solution. Way it is even the north don’t want the south but their leaders need the oil money.
The Northern youths that have been brainwashed to accept poverty and ignorance
Wickedtruths: Historically, the South has always gotten better and more developed, the North has always gotten worse.
As terrible as the North is today, it is still better than it's gonna be in a few years.
Diseases, wars, hunger, poverty, insecurity, illiteracy, kidnapping, banditry, cattle rustling, etc. With the above in place, there is no way they can ever develop.
TheAlchemist: I have to agree, for those doubting see how we drive during traffic in Lagos. Is it the politicians that told us to be so heartless to our fellow road users?
Rubbish, if the laws was not enforced in London, Londoners would be driving at 70 mph on 30 mph roads. Nigerian disobeys the law because the laws are not enforced and the police are corrupt and incompetent.
itu404: Thanks sir, i second you; indeed, i can do what the OP has just done, but i can also choose to show some good things, too. I would rather showcase the good while praying for peace for without peace there is no progress in any form. it is only we Nigerians that can fix Nigeria, coming here to be emotional and divisive just to earn "likes" from the 'bank full', of haters does not change the dire need for unity and peace. unfortunately, when men like FFK and Reno Omokri, keeps fanning the embers of hatred , strife and divisions we still have a long way to go. We all must see the continuance of the geographical landmass known as Nigeria as non negotiable and non debatable. moreover, if Jonathan or Atiku were to come back today, does that guarantee peace, harmony and progress which you and i crave like a thirsty man, water?
Nigerian cannot fix Nigeria until they accept that Nigeria has failed. Fixing Nigeria will require both structure and cultural modification.
Dee60: Fulani population in the whole of Africa is possibly less than 20 million.
They are not all herdsmen as people usually assume. You have the nomadic fulani, the semi-nomadic and the town fulanis. The town fulanis have settled and are no more nomadic. They are very strategic and always fight for the interests of their nomadic brothers. That fight has taken them into the politics of governance and of money where they try to have strategic influence. While other tribes seek relevance in education and trade (which are the main targets of the south) the town fulanis take strategic place in the security segment and in the dominant sectors of the economy.
Nigerians should not frown at efforts to make the fulani herdsmen to become sedentary and possibly become semi-nomadic or even settle as town fulanis. The argument that fulanis will always be nomadic is faulted by the fact that many of them are no longer nomadic. The herdsmen can settle and Nigerians should support efforts to make that happen.
What should not be supported is throwing the borders open for all herdsmen.
Actually, there are very rich fulanis, so rich that they can set up their own development fund, without waiting for funding by government. They can use their own funds to settle herdsmen where they are and let them start to enjoy the benefit of development and education like their counterparts in town. A plan by fulanis for the fulanis may be easier to sell to the herdsmen nomadic fulanis.
Government is needed in the aspects of policy and education (not necessarily some funding that may be hijacked by the wrong people) and this is what the government plan should focus on.
About 70% of Nigeria's population lives in poor settlements which lack basic amenitiesImage caption:
Nigeria is facing a housing crisis, with conditions among the worst in the world, the UN has warned.
More than two-thirds of Nigerians are living in poor settlements with a lack of basic amenities, the UN's housing rapporteur, Leilani Farha, said.
She is quoted by the Reuters news agency as telling journalists in the capital, Abuja, at the end of her 10-day visit to investigate the housing situation in the country's cities:
Quote Message: Nigeria's housing sector is in a complete crisis. Existing programmes will hardly make even a small dent in addressing the ever-growing housing need.
Quote Message: Informal settlements are ballooning where conditions are inhumane and perhaps the most severe I have seen worldwide." Informal settlements are ballooning where conditions are inhumane and perhaps the most severe I have seen worldwide."
She said some settlements lacked access to potable water, toilets and rubbish disposal – and many were exposed to the health problems because of the dangers of stagnant water where bacteria breeds.
The population of Nigeria - already the biggest in Africa - is expected to double to four hundred million by the middle of the century.
The West African nation already lacks more than 22 million houses for its citizens.
An insurgency in the north-east has forced two million people from their homes, causing further strain.
Ms Farha warned that corrupt money flowing into the housing sector had led to a boom in the building of luxury homes, beyond the reach of the vast majority of Nigerians.
She also criticised poor housing policies and the use of force by states and developers to evict communities, which mainly affected women and children.
The UN rapporteur is quoted as saying in her preliminary recommendations:
Quote Message: A national-level moratorium on forced evictions should be declared by the federal government until adequate legal and procedural safeguards are in place to ensure that all evictions are compliant with international human rights law." A national-level moratorium on forced evictions should be declared by the federal government until adequate legal and procedural safeguards are in place to ensure that all evictions are compliant with international human rights law." https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/world-africa-47639452?
shadelek: Osinbajo shouldn't be treated like this, he deserves more. I'm wondering where our economy would be without him. Even when the PMB wasn't around, with osinbajo, the economy was stable and favourable. I think Tinubu plus some cabals are behind this coz they believe Osinbajo may emerge as the right candidate for the party comes 2023.
Let the will of God be done
.... Nigeria economy is in the doldrums. Osinbajo's economic leadership has been a complete and utter failure, his main policies is to blame the previous government.
vaxx: The use of that word is just crazy and alarming . it is rested on pride. Nigerians are hard-working no doubt, so are the citizens of other nation. Nigerians tends to dominate fast base on the population. if one Nigerian is successful in a particular trade , he invite tens of his brother into the same buisness and that continue .
If Nigerian are hardworking, why is the country a mess? Majority of Nigerian in SA are Igbo's and they have political and economical control of South-Eastern, Nigeria but have failed to develop their own region despite 20 years of democratic rule.
Why? Name a specialised technical university after an individual, the strategy was to create the Federal University of Technology to further the industrialisation of Nigeria, this was based on the successful India model initiated by their first prime minister Nehru in 1945.
Till this day all Indian IITS universities have retained their regional and technical name with an academic standard based on scholarship and merit.
It's so depressing that Nigerian lack vision and direction.
