If you check CE on page 19 of the thread that was runing throughout the whole issue(cairo on fire), After I heard his first speech to the demonstrators I told them there that he was looking for a violence response from the people so he would have a reason to hand over to the Army and That this would also appease the US, Isreal and Saudi and most Importantly for him (If you are 82), a respectable funeral,

Googler:
All that should have been thrashed out BEFORE the elections, my friend. What you are saying is that there were imperfections in the system which are now haunting it - I would say which Gbagbo is now taking advantage of. You see, the world is ruled by chaos - we thrive in spite of it. In a war situation, it's much worse. Gbagbo had delayed those elections for 10 years and had brought CIV to a situation where the "powers" just wanted the elections, any elections, to go on, just as they accepted Gbagbo in 2000 just as long as as Guei, who had become the symbol of the problem, was gone. If I agree to go into an election I would abide by the rules and hand over to the WINNER, rebels or no rebels. The issue is not about handing over to rebels - are you saying Mrs Perry should not have handed over to Charles Taylor? Or that Frelimo should have rigged and cancelled results if Renamo had won in Mozambique? When did being a rebel take away anyone's citizenship? I observe it is convenient for Gbagbo supporters to try to present Quatarra as a rebel even though it was Gbagbo that has created the conditions that have led him to become joined at the hips with the rebels whom he was never affiliated with from the beginning.
My Guy are you for the military intervention? that I'd assure would just bring more chaos, because even If we assume that the Election result is correct, it means that 45% of the country supports Mr Gbagbo faction and do you think that they would sit down and allow "Northerners" like Quattara and his brother across the border Campore run their affairs just like that without a fight?(after all they also rejected their Gbagbo). My view is that if the UN was serious about allowing peace in that country they should have insisted Gbagbo (66/7 yrs, sitting president) and Quattara(68/9 ex-prime minister/acting president) act as elder state men and not run. But the greed of the west(note am not saying their the only greedy ones, me sef dey greedy, lol) wanting the resources(soon to be tapped and allocated oil and gas field) wanted them to impose their trusted man(I guess you have access records of Quattara contract and sale of public property during his short time as acting president).

Googler:
All that France and the much vilified West are doing is pitch their tent with the winner in the belief that would secure their national interests, fair enough.
Whatever problems Quatarra may have are to his profile as a person and Gbagbo has far more issues. Ivorians voted for Quatarra and that should be respected. Gbagbo never asked for a recount in the beginning - he simply had his council declare himself the winner. Are you saying that at the time his council was doing that the UN should have been asking for a recount? No. It simply stuck with the winner and that is what it continues to do, even now that Mr Gbagbo is stalling for more time by asking for a recount. Mr Ban is playing by the rules.
Googler, while I don't like dueling or living in the realms of conspiracy, it does happen and that seems to be the case in this one. Go check Quattara history with the French and Gbagbo history with the west. Clearly if I where the west I would choose to back Quattara in a 50/50 case which this election seem to be now( note that Gbagbo won the first round).
When the plans of this elections were being laid out by the UN regional "powers" like Nigeria should have complained like Mbeki(then president of RSA did!!). How do you plan an election between a rebel half of a coountry and the other half in government with the main heads as contenders? who would accept the result? How do you conduct an election when rebels are still armed in a country(If they win do you think the army would hand over to dissents?). How do you plan an election when one party have an overwhelming majority(Quattara party) in the electoral commission and the other party the Majority in the constitutional council(Gbagbo, has powers of Nigerian Supreme court in election matters)?. Only Mbeki asked Questions then and rightly so but the UN in my opinion continue to be incompetent as they always are when they intervene in country soveringty. Googler If you are president would you hand over to rebels who won in areas they control with overwhelming number?. If I post some docs I have seen on other forums i would be tagged a spammer.

The rest of Africa can be irrelevant to them, fair enough, but should they then keep sabotaging the rest of Africa just for a mess of porridge?
How does going to Addis to sabotage the progress already made on Ivory Coast amount to a repudiation of harlotry? Even if as you have been arguing the correct position is that Quatarra should forget about his mandate and let Gbagbo rule forever, the point you are missing is that RSA is not acting in Ivory Coast's interest but its own. This is a pattern that has run through their foreign policy since Mandela stepped down. Read up on their shenanigans on Morocco and other places. They are doing exactly what Regan and Thatcher did with UN sanctions and Mobutu and the others did with African resolutions during apartheid.
Googler you write like you are not conversant with this Quattara guy who is now claiming to be Mr Democracy. Let me not paint the picture for you try read about him and his antecedence from various medium and draw up your own conclusion, all Gbagbo said is that let them be a more neutral Umpire to recount the vote. No why Ban Ki moon and co would be fair in a case involving a former collegue. When they set up the elctoral panel in 2005/6 Mr Mbeki told them the election wouldn't work with it composed like that and it would probably end in dispute. Guess Mbeki is also a prophet or the UN "big-wigs" wanted it to be this way knowing we would all say remove another african sit tight leader!!!

Googler I guessed you haven't followed my position on this issue. I believe even Nigeria should follow our own selfish national interest, which would be what weaken french influence in West Africa would afford us. But our leaders are not strategic thinker and are a hopeless bunch. Do you know the positive effect that dropping of the CFA franc by Cote D'ivorie would have on Nigerian Economy if we were to organise or selves? If Cote D'ivore breaks that ancestral cord with france more CFA zone countries would follow and if Nigeria Business Positions well we would rip from this. I would give you an instance(make e be like say na talk I dey Talk),
From the about the 70s to the year 2000 or there about they was a unified national airline for all French west africa( Air Afrique), this airline was as inefficient as our nigeria airways but almost all the money and later its equipment and profit was french, therefore most of the passengers it carried from its about 11-12 member countries were paying money to the french. This airline got liquidated at about the same time with our Nigeria Airways, however without proper government backing or plans our Nigeria private airlines are now performing strongly on this routes are make their main profits on this routes by providing services that was vacated by the defuct air afrique. Imaging the effect of losing a business of about 250 million people would have on the french central bank? why do you think they need Quattara there badly(I don't blame them fighting for him, but my problem is us (Naija) fighting for ourselves).

No surprise there! South Africa has been set against the rest of Africa since the end of apartheid. No, Mandele's era was actually different - it started with Mbeki. From refusing to cooperate with the rest of Africa on the issue of Morocco and Western Sahara to congratulating Yar'Adua when materials meant for our elections were at a printer's office in Johannesburg, their foreign policy has been driven by, how did John Atta Mills put it? "Mind your own business!" It seems the new rulers of the country don't care if the rest of Africa burns as long as there is "peace" and South African companies are allowed to trade and bread and butter is repatriated. The role they are playing now is the same role played by the likes of Mobotu and Banda during the apartheid era. It's quite sad when you consider the history of the country.
Not the whole of Africa countries are harlot to the west. And the South African ship is just a supply ship in its Navy and it is there to take out south African citizens if crazy Ecowas try their invasion. But trust ECOWAS leaders to engage in fearmongering.

Alleged corruption: EFCC invites ex-Gov Muazu

By Emma Ovuakporie
ABUJA—The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission,EFCC, has invited former Governor of Bauchi Adamu Muazu to appear before its operatives to answer questions on fresh alleged corruption charges.

It was reliably gathered that the former governor had to clear himself before the operatives or he would be re-arraigned by the anti-graft agency.

The anti-graft body had two weeks  ago issued a statement denying media reports that the ex-governor was never at anytime cleared by the it as reported in some dailies.

The EFCC in the statement issued and signed by the anti-graft agency’s spokesman, Mr Femi Babafemi debunked reports that suggest that the body had concluded investigation on the corruption charges against the former governor and found nothing against him.

The anti-graft body said it has to issue the clarification as a response to persistent enquiries coming from members of the press and the general public on its alleged clearance given to Muazu.

“We wish to state emphatically that ex-governor Adamu Muazu is still being investigated and as such could not have been cleared of graft allegations against him.

“The former governor who until recently has been out of the country is still expected to honour an invitation to interview a team of operatives investigating the case against him”, the statement added.

While urging the media to always cross check their information through the open communication channel provided by the Commission, it further explained that none of its officials has been mandated under any guise to speak on a case that is yet to be concluded.

Spokesman of the commission, Mr Femi Babafemi confirmed that the ex-governor has been invited to appear on Thursday

http://www.vanguardngr.com/2010/10/alleged-corruption-efcc-invites-ex-gov-muazu/#
Well although I do not support Goodluck, I can say that during his tenure Muazu was one of the most effective Governor. He left a lot of Infrastructure and was very religious tolerant, which was one  reason he was not re-elected for the senate(the said he respected the "arines" more than his "elders"wink.  The Efcc was probably after him because the current governor had petition before them against him, am not saying he is a saint but since he left Bauchi state the current governor has left no basic infrastructure and you all know the security suituation.

Other African countries are taking their time to make a good judgement, unlike us wey rush to talk. In the end we would probably reverse our initial position like we did after FIFA Threatened us after world cup. What Gbagbo is saying is simple, If Quattara believe he won he should agree to a recount with international monitors from different power block not just France, US and their proxy country like Burkina, Nigeria et al. I feel this a resonable request. Nigeria should stop advocating for military intervention into another countries political issue because it may just justify our military intervening if thing are not too clear next year, Our president should think more strategically than the average man on the street but he is not.

EGYPT NEEDS A MILITARY COUP

This standoff between the people and Mubarak has gone on for too long. The society is descending into chaos and anarchy while the army just sits there and watches. It won't take sides with the people. It won't take sides with Mubarak. It won't impose its authority on anything.

What's the point of having a military when they are so impotent in the face of the state collapsing in on itself?

The Egyptian military needs to seize power, establish military rule for a period not more than 6 months, following which elections can be held and a democratically elected government installed.
JEN33 Thats what exactly mr Mubarak, US and Isreal want, they only trust the military apart from mubarak. They know if mubarak stays longer they people will become more restive then the military will step in and the people will be happy. But if mubarak just hand over to them they will be rejected. So it's a game play and some like you has already fallen for it,lol.

S.Africa sees 'discrepancies' in Ivory Coast vote

* Diplomats worry that South Africa may not press Gbagbo

By Jon Herskovitz

PRETORIA, Jan 21 (Reuters) - South African's president said on Friday there were uncertainties over the Ivory Coast election about both main candidate sides, although global powers believe the vote was clearly won by a rival to Laurent Gbagbo.

The statement from Jacob Zuma, the leader of Africa's biggest economy, could add to worries his government may be a weak point in regional efforts to force Gbagbo, who became president in 2000, to step down.

"We believe that there also some discrepancies in the manner in which the election , has come to the final pronouncement of the vote," Zuma said at a news conference after holding talks with Uganda President Yoweri Museveni.

The African Union's mediator for Ivory Coast planned talks with the leaders of Angola and South Africa this week, trying to prod them into taking a firm stand in ending Gbagbo's rule.

"Angola is the weakest partner in AU unity," said a diplomat on Thursday who is following the Ivory Coast crisis, adding South Africa has also not weighed in as strongly as some had hoped. [ID:nLDE70J17B]

The United States, European Union, United Nations and others have stated that Alassane Ouattara won the Nov. 28 vote. Ivory Coast, the world's top cocoa grower, has been paralysed since the presidential election.

Ouattara was proclaimed winner by the electoral commission and is internationally recognised as president-elect, but Gbagbo, who retains control of the military, has refused to go, alleging the vote was rigged.

Ivory Coast's pro-Gbagbo Constitutional Council cancelled hundreds of thousands of votes in Quattara strongholds to reverse his win.

Military chiefs of West African regional bloc ECOWAS met in Mali on Tuesday to discuss the planning of an ouster of Gbagbo.

Zuma did not throw his support behind a proposal floated by diplomats for Gbagbo to go into exile, a move they believe could help end the crisis and ensure a peaceful transition of power.

"If we believe that somebody has lost the election, why do we call for somebody to leave the country?" Zuma said, without making any critical comments of Gbagbo.

Zuma said he felt an African Union meeting next week in Ethiopia might be able to "deal with the matter". (Reporting by Jon Herskovitz; Editing by Matthew Jones)

For your info, it was France that stopped them taking over the whole country by blocking all rebel routes to Abidjan.

Ghana justifies position not to use force to resolve Cote d'Ivoire crisis
English.news.cn
2011-01-18 20:11:43

ACCRA, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Ghana on Tuesday justified its position of no military intervention in neighboring Cote d'Ivoire to resolve the post-election crisis.

Ghanaian President John Evans Atta Mills felt vindicated by the position taken by the AU envoys at the United Nations on the political crisis in Cote d'Ivoire, Director of Communications at the Presidential Office Korku Anyidoho told the media here on Tuesday.

African envoys said in a declaration issued earlier that dialogue instead of military action should be used to resolve the post-election crisis in Ghana's western neighboring country.

The evolving refugee situation as a result of the crisis had become a matter of concern in the sub-region as media reports here on Tuesday said over 150 Ghanaian nationals had returned home from Cote d'Ivoire.

Ghana has made it clear that military action should be the last solution to the political crisis that broke out after the national elections on Nov. 28 in the West African country.

"Prior to taking that stance, the president had consulted widely with his service chiefs and former president Rawlings. And everybody knows the role Rawlings played in fostering peace in Africa and in Liberia in particular," Anyidoho said.

He said when the genocide was going on in Rwanda in 1994 and other nations were recalling their troops from the UN operation in the country, Rawlings insisted that the Ghanaian troops remained there to save lives.

Meanwhile, the managing editor of a pro-government newspaper, the Enquire, Raymond Archer, said the position of the AU ambassadors had proved that ECOWAS had goofed badly in deciding to take the military option.

"ECOWAS was not in the position to carry out a successful military campaign, the incumbent's position would have been strengthened," said Archer, who had just returned from Cote d' Ivoire.

Instead, Archer said, ECOWAS should rather explore all diplomatic avenues to resolve the issue since the Ivorian problem went beyond incumbent Laurent Gbagbo and his presidential rival Alassane Ouattara.

"It is a systemic problem which, if not dealt with properly, could resurface in future elections," Archer added.

The historical ties between Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire went beyond just boundary issues. Ghana and its western neighbor produce over 50 percent of cocoa in the world.

When half of the country is under rebel control and that where he gets majority of his vote from? If he is sworn in do you think the southerners will not give him a taste of his own medcine?(starting their own war like he did) What ECOWAS should be thinking of doing is how to hold a confrence on Ethnic nationalities and how to create a political structure that is unique to each country and not this cut and paste systems every where (including Nigeria which is causing wahala)
