The above has nothing to do with The concept of IVORITE in terms of who started it. Quattara and soro mutinied because of the very concept introduced by the South against the north. Again the southerners did not know how to handle the inclusion of the multi ethnic make up introduced into their country psot 80's and started staring up ethnic tensions which are evident in today's politics, France or no France.
Fact is a lot of Northerners are truly Burkinabe or Mixed, and a lot of northerners are closer ethnically to Burkinabe than to the south.
That is why a sensible voice like Thabo Mbeki way back in 2005/6 told the UN to trash out the nationality issue before holding any elections or it might lead to civil war, especially if the Rebels were not disarmed. As we have seen what he said have proved prophetic. Lets remember also that it was Gbagbo that gave Quattara back his CIV citizenship in 2000. Ultimately all these guys are just pawn in a resource war.

If you had been following the Ivory Coast crisis on a daily basis, you would recall that Quatara's first act was to appoint Soro his deputy and that Soro is the public face of the 'rebels' who have now been co-opted into the new Republican force wchich includes militias and deserters from Gbagbo's army. And that they will be the bulk on Ivory Coast's new army.
Guy if you have been following CIV since 2000 you would know that after Gbagbo was sworn in Quattara made a promise to make the country ungovernable for him. In 2002 a rebel movement led by Soro started in the north backed and armed by France and logistically supported by Campore(Burkina Faso). The rebels openly said that their leader was Quattara and they would not be peace in CIV until Quattara rules,
See go search for Quattara policies and Economic decision then you would see why the French will kill for him, Nuff said

If civilian carry arms they are no longer defenceless(as per Gadaffi) or why did you think NATO bombed them(Benghazi gang) too.
As per Gbagbo the fact is France and UN are desprate to put in their guy as president. They armed rebels(like in libya) and are killing souther Civilians that support Gbagbo. Watch not that am happy about this, But as Thabo Mbeki said in 2005/6 This election would cause a long civil war like the Congo.

I applaud the fact that a dude who lost the presidential election choose to baulk @ the result and do a Ghadaffi upon his own people--killing protesting women and shelling a market.

If U know your history well, you should know your African hero -Gbagbo- along with Henri Bedie[one time president] were the very ones who started the instigation of ethno-religious sentiments primarily against Alassane Quatara [one time prime minister and winner of the election] all in their quest to become president.
Ochuko nay you need to cleanse your self from your CNN induced history lessons,
Ivorite was introduced first when Quattara was prime minister and acting president and he probably did it to impress the late dictator and the thing boomaranged on him like the coup law and Obasanjo.
I am not a Gbagbo Fan as you put it but I believe in Soveringty of any Nation and the French and UN in case have clearly dug thier own pit because when China and Russia start to do their own they no go fit talk.

Why should French troops hand him over to the rebels? Do they not think the rebels might "Samuel Doe" him?

Nik Sarkozy is a real f*ggot. What happened to UN tribunals and all that? Or are the rebels supposed to hold the tribunal?

Sarkozy has been pursuing some nonsensical imperialist foreign policy in recent weeks in order to take minds off his impending defeat at the polls.

First off, he backed an unorganised "Al-Quaeda-influenced" rebel group in Libya.

Then he attempts to force through election results in a country that needed balkanisation, not elections.

Then he arrests Gbagbo and instead of following due process and shipping the dude to The Hague, he hands him over to the rebels.
And on top of that the UN said Quattara should investigate the genocide accusation against himself(Quattara) and his troops, These people are F>u>c>k>I>n>g african bad and alot of us are enjoying it undecided undecided

Even if the negotiations for the departure of Laurent Gbagbo succeed, Ivory Coast is entering a highly dangerous phase.

The use of poorly trained but deadly militias by both sides in the war - and question marks over exactly which forces back Alassane Ouattara - make the future highly uncertain.
Perhaps Ivory Coast will return, in a few years' time, to being a relatively successful economic centre for West Africa.

But perhaps the model to be followed will be here in neighbouring Liberia - where a decade of violent ethnic balkanisation is only now beginning to be resolved.

The coming days and months are likely to be perilous for civilians as possible reprisal attacks take place.

The massacre at Douekoue in the west - where some people were savagely attacked while being burned alive as crowds looked on - was appalling in itself. But it was also a wider warning.
The United Nations is investigating who was responsible for the deaths of at least 160 (and maybe many more) people in Douekoue.

The killings began just hours after the Republican Forces, loyal to Mr Ouattara, swept through on their advance south towards Abidjan.

'Being a foreigner'

On the political front, if and when Mr Ouattara formally takes office, he will face continued opposition. This may include a possible crisis of legitimacy, in some Ivorian eyes, because he was helped to power by foreign military forces.

Start Quote
He may have been elected to office - but in the end he only finally came to power through the use of local and foreign force”
End Quote Although the French and the UN say they attacked Mr Gbagbo's bases as part of their mandate to protect civilians from heavy weapons, the coincidence of this action with the sweep south of the Republican Forces will have escaped no-one.

Given Ivory Coast's long history of political and ethnic tension, it may not be enough for Mr Ouattara to have won the election and be "the internationally recognised" president.

Indeed, this international seal of approval may be a disadvantage in local political terms.

For almost 20 years Mr Ouattara's political opponents have accused him of being a "foreigner".

He hails from the mainly Muslim north.

But southern politicians have long sought to exclude him from power by saying part of his family is in fact from neighbouring Burkina Faso.

This nationalistic accusation has been very effective in the south even if in the north - and in many urban centres nationwide - Mr Ouattara won a majority of votes in last November's elections.

Controlling his own forces may prove to be a huge challenge for Alassane Ouattara 'Invisible commandos'

If and when the northerner Mr Ouattara formally takes the sash of office he will face enormous challenges. These include:

explaining why he resorted to using militias known as "dozos" - when he had just a few weeks earlier made a speech, while holed up in the Golf Hotel, calling for a new professional, "Republican" armed forcesconvincing radical nationalists in the south that he has not been foisted on them by a conspiracy of foreigners. This was the accusation consistently made by Mr Gbagbo - whether it is true or not it has been an effective political tool
controlling all of the military forces that nominally backed him. It is known that some of the commanders who swept southwards are not part of the formal army officer corps. Some are known on occasions to have disobeyed senior officers' orders - but to have nevertheless retained their power bases
finding a role for the "invisible commandos". Weeks before the main force swept south, these men conquered a large swathe of Abidjan. They were certainly fighting against Mr Gbagbo. But some of them are reported to have denied they are pro-Ouattara
deciding which crimes committed during the fighting should be investigated and prosecuted. Douekoue is just the latest, albeit most shocking example some 500 people were killed or "disappeared" in the months before the big offensive. Most of the known cases were killed by Mr Gbagbo's army and militia. But some of the officers in charge subsequently defected to Mr Ouattara's side. Whether they should be rewarded with jobs in the Republican Forces or taken to court will be a complex political calculation.
Political tightrope

Alassane Ouattara has a reputation as a rigorous, hard-working man.

He's relaxed around conference tables, in formal ceremonies, and while giving speeches.

But this war has thrust him into a world of fighters who wear coils of ammunition around their shoulders and bandanas on their heads.

If and when he takes power he may try to distance himself from the men of violence, even while praising their role, in his words, in "restoring democracy to Ivory Coast".

It's a political tightrope that Alassane Ouattara hasn't walked before.

He may have been elected to office. But in the end he only finally came to power through the use of local and foreign force.

It's all a long way from the boardrooms of the IMF. Mr Ouattara faces a steep learning curve if he is to survive this new world

MY BROTHER, I ENJOY YOUR PERSON. BUT NOTE THIS;WE SHOULD NOT BE TOO EGOTRIC IN LIFE. IF YOU HAVE A WIFE AND YOU KNOW ,YES YOU ARE THE HEAD OF THE HOUSE. IF YOUR WIFE BECOMES VIOLENT, AND PEOPLE NOW COME TO YOU AND SAY, STAY OFF AND ALLOW YOUR WIFE TO BE FOR PEACE TO REIGN. YOU MUST LISTEN AND COOL DOWN BECAUSE OF YOUR CHILDREN. WE SHOULD UNDERSTAND THAT WHEN 2 ELEPHANTS FIGHT, THE GRASS SUFFER. WE ALL SHOULD LEARN TO BE VERY CAREFUL IN DOING THINGS. FIRST CONSIDER THE INTEREST OF PEOPLE ARROUND YOU. JUST LIKE WHEN YOU ARE ON A WHEEL  DRIVING YOUR CAR, CONSIDER THE INTEREST OF OTHER ROAD USERS. THE SCHOOL CHILDREN, PREGNANT WOMEN, THE BLIND AND EVEN OTHER CAR USERS. LET US LEARN TO KNOW THAT WE MUST NOT ALLOW PEOPLE TO BE KILLED AS A RESULT OF OUR OWN SELFISH INTEREST. IT IS ONLY GOD THAT HASSUPREM POWER
We must understand that Gbagbo was not fighting a personal battle alone(yes basic human greed was involved). we should remeber that even with the election results that the UN used to declare Quattara winner Gbagbo won 46% Of the votes and Quattara won 54% of the votes.
If Gbagbo had immediatly stepped down and collected french settlement he would have been labeled a traitor by a lot of people calling him hard headed now.
note even with the removal of Gbagbo peace would not reign in CIV for a long while thanks to weak regional leadership.

MY BRODA, TWO WRONGS CANNOT MAKE A RIGHT. LET US LOOK AT THIS,EVEN YOUR COUNTRY, NIGERIA ACCEPTED QUATTARA AS THE RIGHTFUL PERSON THAT WON THE ELECTION. MUST HE GBAGBO BE RIGHT BY TAKING UP ARMS SINCE HE HAS BEEN TOLD TO VACATE HIS POST? AGAIN, IF YOU AS A PERSON IS HAVING PROBLEM WITH YOUR BILOGICAL BROTHER AND THE WHOLE ELDERS PLEADED WITH YOU BY TELLING YOU TO DROP YOUR ACTION AGAINST YOUR FAMILY FOR THE INTEREST OF YOUR CHILDREN OR RELATIONS, AND THEN YOU SAY, NO. SHOULD IT BE THAT WAY? YOU MUST CONSIDER THE CHILDREN AND YOUR WIFE AND OTHERS AND ALLOW PEACE A CHANCE SINCE THE ELDERS HAS SPOKEN.
You have to understand this Gbagbo have been willing to dialouge but it is Quattara that have refused to talk to Gbagbo because he knew he could kill his way through the country and remove Gbagbo. If Ecowas was as strong as SADC this wouldn't have come to this stage, But the biggest boy in the Block(our Nigeria) is being ruled by a little man angry angry(as one female analyst put it) who does not see the implication of a rebel army taking over government protend for the region in future.

IF THE UN/ INTERNATIONAL ELECTION MONITORING TEAM HAS DECLARED QUATTARA AS THE RIGHTFUL PERSON THAT WON THE ELECTION, WHY CAN'T GHAGBO STEP DOWN AND ALLOW TO GOVERN? WHY MUST HE ROLE OUT ARMY AGAINST HIS PEOPLE? NOW THAT HIS HOME HAS BEEN SUROUNDED, WHY THEN HAS HE AGREED TO LEAVE?
My Advice to you Andyanders is this, Go and read about this issue from different sources.
Read from as far back from Circa 1994 when Quattara was acting president/prime minister and sold almost all public utilities in CIV to the French and other western companies at 1 CFA franc each and tell me how western based UN would not say he won a election,
And mind you it is Ivorians that also voted and are fighting for Gbagbo. And it was Quattara and his boys that have been killing people since 2002 with UN and French supplied weapons( They even burned down Drogba village recently but since it not Gbagbo it is okay).

so why is Gbagbo not appealing with evidence an election that he is widely believed to have lost?
why is he holding the country hostage?
whether Quattara is a stooge or not, if Gbagbo had conceeded the election and proceeded to appeal, do you truly think the blood of the masses would have been so aimlessly spilled?
He loves Ivory Coast so much that his desire for power is worth blood?

Gore beat Bush as was widely believed but he chose not to pursue a case tht could cause yield a constitutional crisis and decided that it was not worth it?
when will we have African democracy that would com to terms with the fact that their desires are secondary in the scheme of things?
I hope the kind of home grown democracy you are imagining is not the c rap that was done in Kenya where Kabaki lost but the AU in an invention of African type of democracy decided that the loser and the winner should share power and form a govt?
whatever form of democracy we settle for in Africa, it must be a form that makes the will of the people paramount and the wil and desires of politicans must be a distant second.Anything else is a farce, simplistic and will always end in bloodshed.
Mbubela, Gbagbo did appeal and won the appeal at the constitutional court as required by the agreement signed by all parties to the election in South Africa in 2006(Then RSA president Thabo Mbeki was against the agreement predicting that it can't work unless rebels are disarmed before the elections, and the constituted membership of the electoral commission(highly pro Quatara) and the constitutional court(Pro Gbagbo) be changed, But the UN and France had other Ideas(yea yea am blaming the west again). This election was doomed to fail from the start, What result did we expect when a sitting president who has half of the country as his Ethnic group runs against A rebel leader whose Ethnic group forms the other half? Of course a disputed election. If the UN were a serious organiztion and not a body of weapon dealers and contractors they would have insisted in mediating and solving the Ethnic issues first before asking for elections, as Mbeki and co recommended.

What is our thing?

dude, democracy is overated but until you can espouse a better option,we have to make it work.
the reasons why it is not working here is largely due to the lack of strong institutions and the overwhelming presence of selfish, power drunk and greedy leaders who never for a moment think of anyone else but themselves and their pockets.
They don't even pretend to.
That is why it is not working in the continent.
The bashing of democracy is short sighted and overly simplistic.
Look at South Africa. The reason why that country has not tipped over is because of strong institutions that are still limiting greedy, selfish leaders who are exploiting every available opportunity to violation the country dry.
The moment they are able to weaken and destroy the strong institutions they inherited, someone will say democracy does not work there too.
I am no supporter of Quattara but i could not care less if Gbagbo rots in hell.
killing your people to remain in power can never be justified.
at least no one claimed he won the elections.
Mbubela please read what I wrote well!! I wrote Western Democracy,
We can probably evolve our own effective model(like the Asian) if we take the time to define who we really are by define what is the true purpose of what our various countries are.

So, which is the best form of political government might be best suited to the interests of Africa?
For us to know the best form of Government we would(African countries) first have to have a national/ethnicity talks in all our various countries. Fact is most elections in the past decade have been contested in almost all African countries where they have a plurality of ethnic groups/cultures and were the population of this divide is a almost a balanced equilibrium (as in CIV). The fact is that If the UN had even declared Gbagbo the winner, Quattara would not have accepted the result as he did at 2000. That why I think the problem is not Going to be solved by demonizing people but getting to the root of the problem, which is to redifine and restructure the nature of the present African states.

This is not selfishness, but stupidity and greed of france and the UN!!! the conducted an election in a country that was ethnically divided and both side armed!! what did the expect? that even if the first result had said Gbagbo won That Quattara would accept(he refused the election result that declared Gbagbo president in 2000, and him and his "people started a war since 2002.) the only reason that Quattara forces have gone this far is because the west have backed and armed them against their southern brothers and as soon as the west relaxes their presence the south will probably arm from the east(china/russia, who are at the side line watching as UN is fastly losing it moral currency),
And remeber even though the elction result was the truth, Gbagbo has almost the same amount of adult vote as Quattara(i.e 46% to 50%) and when you add error it almost amount to the same thing.
