I Do Not Come To You By Chance by Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani Imagine This by Sade Adeniran In Dependence by Sarah Ladipo Manyika I read a lot of Nigerian writers, goes without saying; probably because i'm an aspiring author and I know that there are lots of interesting Nigerian stories waiting to be told. It's a shame that most of us would rather read foreign authors. |

In Dependence by Sarah Ladipo Manyika Nice book, even though I think that the author rushed the story. But if it works for her, |

I read Everyday is for the Thief by Teju Cole over the weekend. It's so poetic and richly textured. His prose flows very smoothly. I really enjoyed it, and gladly recommend it. I'm now reading I Do Not Come To You By Chance by Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani. Believe the hype. |

Anthills of the Savannah - Chinua Achebe The Almost Moon - Alice Sebold. I'm this close to dumping this book. It's certainly not as poignant as The Lovely Bones. |

Tatase: Does which, the Mariama Ba? Or the Stieg Larsson?
The Mariama Ba, I'll do a re-read of soon: it wasn't really my thing the first time round but that might be coloured by the fact that I was reading it to analyze and essay and not to enjoy. The Stieg Larsson is really really good, but I'm having a little reader's ADD so I'm kind of reading several things at the same time, even though its my main thing.
I'm not really a Jodi Picoult person, but I loved "Waiting" by Ha Jin and I don't know why I haven't ever checked out any of his other stuff. Let me know if "The Crazed" lives up to "Waiting."
@ topic,
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo- Stieg Larsson (Re-reading) The Last Concubine- Lesley Downer (for the 2nd time this year) (Re-reading) Twilight- Stephanie Meyer (because it was lost for a while and I just found it) Thanks. I was referring to Stieg Larsson's trilogy. Will look out for them now. I've finished reading "The Crazed" and i'm afraid it didn't quite live up to my expectations. I give it 2 stars out of 5. Jin's style is on point as usual - distinct metaphors, near-lyrical expressions and so on. The themes in the book are relevant to China as well. But the plot was a bit too simple for me. I'm just saying. Give it a try all the same. Who knows? I might just be wrong. |

Just finished reading "Keeping Faith" by Jodi Picoult. I loved it, Picoult rarely disappoints. Now reading "The Crazed" by Ha Jin. I hope it's as good as "Waiting" Tatase: I read this in uni for a class, so I don't have the most favourable memories of it, but maybe I should re-read it for leisure and it'll be better. Do you like it??
@ topic,
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo- Stieg Larsson . @Tatase Now this is on my must-read list. Does it live up to the hype, please? |
Literature › Re: How Many New Nigerian Writers Have You Read? by Suzanne84(f): 8:49am On Feb 17, 2010 |
Tatase: It's very difficult for me to read many Nigerian authors. Everything is so heavy-hearted and metaphysical. I mean after some of the Nigerian books I've read recently, Things Fall Apart is like easy reading. Our new authors really know how to depress the soul!
-I read a Jude Dibia book (Walking With Shadows) about a gay Nigerian man who came out and had a wife and kids (it was unexpected since I didn't know what it was about before reading it, and I don't know if I was ready for it). - Helen Oyeyemi- Icharus Girl (why must everything be so weird and metaphysical). - Diana Evans- 26A (again with heroines with psychological problems) - Chimamanda Adichie <sighs> - Nigerian chick-lit author, Abidemi Sanusi (it's not excellent, but at least it's contemporary somewhat light, everyday life stuff that's relatable) - Sefi Attah (Everything Good Will Come. This is the only one I've mentioned that I'd read again.) - Ben Okri (though I wouldn't consider him "new" - I just can't do him. I've tried and I can't and frankly I don't even want to. I understand what you mean. However, not all contemporary Nigerian authors dwell on the weird and metaphysical. Try Sefi Atta's 'Swallow' or 'Lawless', her short story collection. You'll like them. Toni Kan's 'Nights of the Creaking Bed' is excellent. Helon Habila's 'Waiting for an Angel' is another good one and so is Jude Dubia's 'Unbridled'. Chimamanda is a great writer. I'd gladly recommend all her books to anyone but something tells me you're not a fan. Hope this helps. |
