MY ENCOUNTER WITH HAJIA FARIDA MUHAMMED – WOLE ADEDOYIN

Hajia Farida Muhammed embodies qualities of ease, humility, and quiet strength. In a previous article titled "Breaking Barriers: The Pursuit of Female Leadership in ANA," I passionately advocated for supporting her presidential aspirations. Despite her admirable qualities, I am cognizant of opposing forces at play, which I intend to expose in due course. Stay tuned to uncover the motivations behind these regressive efforts.
Upon delving into Hajia Farida Muhammed's literary background, it becomes evident that she has been rigorously assessed and proven to be dependable. She fits seamlessly into her role, having served various positions within ANA Niger (her chapter) with distinction. Moreover, her substantial contributions to the Association's advancement will be unveiled in my upcoming article. Stay tuned for the details.
I first crossed paths with Hajia Farida Muhammed in 2015 in Kaduna, during the election that marked the beginning of Denja Abdulahi's tenure as the 11th President of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA). During this period, Hajia Farida Muhammed publicly endorsed Mallam Denja Abdulahi. Consequently, this endorsement stirred an internal crisis within ANA Niger, a situation that remains unresolved to this day.
The turbulence within ANA Niger during that time was widely discussed within the ANA community, both on social media and various WhatsApp platforms dedicated to ANA discussions. One particular article caught my attention, describing Hajia Farida Muhammed in a way that piqued my curiosity, motivating me to meet her in person.
I was serving as the official publicist and media consultant for Mallam Denja's ANA Presidential Campaign back then. Interestingly, ANA Niger posed a significant challenge for us during the campaign period. Despite the internal strife, ANA Niger stood out as one of the most vibrant chapters in the country, primarily due to its rich literary activities, innovative programs, and impactful projects. Adding to its strength was the chapter's financial backing from the former Governor of Niger state, His Excellency Babangida Aliyu.
It was noteworthy that Mallam Denja’s main competitor in the election also hailed from the same state. Learning about the challenges faced by Hajia Farida Muhammed from some staunch members of ANA Niger, even before the 2015 ANA Presidential Election, I could empathize with her decision to support Mallam Denja Abdulahi over his primary rival from her own state.
While in Kaduna, I observed Hajia Farida Muhammed actively campaigning and rallying support for the Denja/Camillus ticket. I also witnessed the intense public confrontation that unfolded between her and Mallam Denja Abdulahi's sole opponent both during and after the election.
Those acquainted with ANA's history and politics will remember ANA Niger's significant involvement in the 2011 ANA Presidential election, which led to Professor Remi Raji's appointment as the 10th President of ANA. This success was attributed to the chapter's unity and cohesion. However, in 2015, the division within ANA Niger played a pivotal role. This division ultimately worked in Mallam Denja Abdulahi's favor, securing his victory against his sole opponent from the same chapter.
In the 2019 elections, influential members of the chapter extended substantial support to the opponent of Mr. Camillus Ukah, the outgoing President of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA). Camillus Ukah's backing in Niger state was solely through Hajia Farida Muhammed. She staunchly stood by Camillus Ukah both before and after the election, assuming a pivotal role akin to the Director General of Camillus Ukah's ANA Presidency in the entire Northern Region. It's no surprise that Camillus Ukah chose her as his running mate.
The selection of Hajia Farida Muhammed as Camillus's Vice Presidential candidate sparked hope among many of us that the 2019 ANA Election would favor the Camillus/Farida's Camp. However, the situation turned sour as the election had to be canceled due to an internal crisis.
The unfortunate turmoil that marred the 2019 election will be discussed in detail in my subsequent writing. The association's elders made sincere efforts to prevent the crisis from escalating.
The delegates brought by Hajia Farida Muhammed from Niger and other Northern states provided us with confidence that Camillus would emerge victorious in the election. The atmosphere on the election ground was intense, with fervent campaigning from both Camillus Ukah's supporters and his opponents, each group striving to persuade the Congress regarding the best candidate to vote for in that election.
It's no secret that the current ANA President is actively supporting Hajia Farida's sole opponent, even going to the extent of aiding in the selection of the candidate's team. I possess evidence supporting this claim. My sincere advice to the outgoing ANA President is to allow the Congress to make the decision. I mentioned to a member a few days ago that the outgoing ANA President obtained the ANA Presidency on a platter of gold, without any competition. As far as I know, Camillus Ukah didn't participate in any ANA Presidential election. In 2020, he assumed the ANA Presidency through an emergency Congress meeting convened by the BOT, and he ran unopposed. Similarly, in 2022, there were no contenders; he once again emerged unopposed. There is a need for him to respect the opportunity he has been given and not misuse it. This position is a result of nothing but the grace of God. As mentioned earlier, I intend to delve deeper into the events of the 2019, 2020, and 2022 elections before the convention.
Camillus Ukah ought to refrain from pressuring ANA Chapter Chairmen to vote for his preferred candidate. He should demonstrate leadership by being fair to both candidates. I'm not suggesting that Camillus Ukah must repay Farida's support for his past campaigns, but he should maintain a neutral and transparent stance before, during, and after the election. He should allow the candidates to present their agendas to the Congress and win their votes based on merit, rather than selecting candidates and leveraging his presidential power for personal gain.
I extend my best wishes to Hajia Farida Muhammed for a successful outcome in the upcoming election.

BREAKING BARRIERS: THE QUEST FOR FEMALE LEADERSHIP IN ANA

With the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) election drawing near, candidates are actively campaigning across different state chapters to garner support and endorsements. Notably, this election marks a historic moment as a female writer is stepping forward to vie for the top leadership position within the Association. It's worth recognizing that women have not previously sought the highest office in ANA.
The significance of this milestone can be traced back to the invaluable contributions of women to Nigerian Literature. This journey began with trailblazers like Flora Nwapa, widely regarded as Nigeria's first female novelist. Born in January 1931 in Oguta (or Ugwuta), a town nestled on the eastern shores of the stunning Oguta Lake in Imo State, southeastern Nigeria, Flora Nwapa achieved a remarkable feat in 1966 by becoming the first African woman to publish a novel in the English language.
In an interesting twist of fate, the outgoing ANA President also hails from Imo State, further highlighting the rich literary heritage and potential for transformative change that this upcoming election holds for the Association.
Numerous esteemed female writers subsequently joined the literary scene. These authors included luminaries such as Buchi Emecheta, Mabel Segun, Hafsat Abdulwaheed, Catherine Acholonu, Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo, Stella Oyedepo, Sefi Atta, Karen King-Aribisala, Sarah Ladipo Manyika, Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani, Molara Ogundipe, Ifeoma Okoye, Chinelo Okparanta, Osonye Tess Onwueme, Molara Wood, Balaraba Ramat Yakubu, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Ayobami Adebayo, Nnedi Okorafor, Helen Oyeyemi, Chika Unigwe, Lola Shoneyin, and Toyin Adewale-Gabriel, among others.
In the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), numerous accomplished women writers have enthusiastically pursued various positions at the national level. However, it's worth noting that very few have ventured to run for the esteemed position of ANA Presidency. Among these talented female authors are individuals such as Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo, Maryam Ali Ali, Joy Esuku, Chinyere Obi-Obasi, Prof. May Nwoye, Charry Ada Onwu Otuyelu, and Farida Muhammed, just to name a few.
A quick examination of ANA's Past Presidents list reveals a historical absence of female leadership within the organization. The roster includes notable figures such as Chinua Achebe (1981-1986), Kole Omotoso (1986-1988), Femi Osofisan (1988-1990), Ken Saro-Wiwa (1990-1993), Odia Ofeimun (1993-1997), Abubakar Gimba (1997-2001), Olu Obafemi (2001-2005), Wale Okediran (2005-2009), Jerry Agada (2009-2011), Remi Raji (2011-2015), Denja Abdullahi (2015-2019), and Camillus Ukah (2019-present). Notably, there has not been a female president in the history of ANA.
It's hardly a surprise anymore that Hajia Farida Muhammed has set her sights on the top leadership position within ANA. Her campaign trail has already taken her through states such as Osun, Oyo, Nasarawa, and more states like Benue and Abuja are poised to be included in her itinerary. The undeniable truth is that within the realm of ANA politics, Hajia Farida Muhammed holds considerable sway. Her influence played a pivotal role in the rise of Denja Abdulahi in 2015 and Camillus Ukah in 2019. In 2015, Farida's unwavering support for Denja Abdulahi was not only evident but also served as a testament to her dedication and commitment to the cause.
ANA Niger once held a significant role in ANA Politics on a national scale. It played a pivotal role in the emergence of Prof. Remi Raji in 2011, a time when Denja Abdulahi assumed the position of Vice President in ANA. However, this chapter later experienced a division when a prominent figure within it contested for ANA's top position in 2015, challenging Denja Abdulahi.
In 2015, at the Kaduna convention, Hajia Farida stood firmly alongside Denja Abdulahi, resulting in a noticeable split within ANA Niger. One faction supported the presidential candidate from the state, while the other rallied behind Denja Abdulahi. Many of us bore witness to the events in Kaduna, and this marked a significant turning point for ANA Niger.
Since that tumultuous event, ANA Niger has struggled to reunify and regain its former cohesion.
In 2019, when Camillus Ukah announced his bid for the ANA presidency, he selected Hajia Farida as his running mate. However, some influential figures from Niger state and the northern regions, who supported Camillus Ukah's opponent, began to mobilize against his presidential aspirations. Although the election did not take place that year, the ANA Niger delegation was notably divided, with Hajia Farida leading a substantial group to garner support for Camillus Ukah. I was amazed by her ability to approach members of the northern chapters in support of Camillus Ukah’s candidacy. At the Enugu Convention ground, she tirelessly moved from one northern chapter to another, seeking endorsements for Camillus Ukah.
Recently, while reviewing video clips I recorded during the Enugu Saga, I came across a segment where a member of one of the ANA Northern Chapters accused Hajia Farida Muhammed of abandoning one of their own for an unfamiliar candidate. The man was expressing his grievances in Hausa, a language I didn't understand at the time. It was only after I shared the video with a Hausa-speaking friend that I learned the reason behind the accusation. If there is interest, I am willing to share the video, along with other captivating short clips related to the Enugu Saga.
I am aware that certain political entities she has displeased due to her association with Mallam Denja Abdulahi and Camillus Ukah are now joining forces with prominent figures within ANA to thwart her presidential aspirations. I find it rather astonishing to witness a well-known personality leading the charge in this campaign.
At present, my belief firmly holds that Hajia Farida Muhammed should not be dismissed simply because of her gender; instead, her admirable actions deserve recognition and reciprocity. It has come to my attention that there are those who doubt Farida Muhammed's capabilities. However, it is essential to acknowledge her impressive track record, including her roles as Vice-Chairman and Chairman of ANA Niger, her tenure as a national treasurer, and her current position as the outgoing Vice President of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA).
Similar comments were made about Camillus Ukah in the past, with many giving him various labels. Some claimed he was too reserved, incapable of delivering results, or even called him a puppet. The question remains: Is Camillus Ukah truly a puppet? I leave it to my readers to provide their answers.
I believe it is high time that female writers within the ANA (Association of Nigerian Authors) become more prominent in ANA politics. Elections often involve politics, and this phenomenon is not unique to ANA; it occurs in other similar professional associations such as NUJ (Nigeria Union of Journalists), NMA (Nigerian Medical Association), NBA (Nigerian Bar Association), and so on.
For instance, in NUJ, there exists NAWOJ (National Association of Women Journalists), which actively safeguards the interests of female journalists across the country. During elections within NUJ, NAWOJ consistently supports their female candidates. However, we haven't seen a comparable support system within the writers' community. The Women Writers Association of Nigeria (WRITA), which was once vibrant, seems to have fallen into disuse. In the past, a majority of WRITA members were also ANA members, making it a potentially valuable resource to support individuals like Hajia Farida Muhammed during times like these. It's time for ANA to recognize and empower its female writers within its political landscape.
If WRITA were to be inactive, I strongly recommend its revival to champion the cause of women in the field of writing. There are numerous talented female writers across the country who are outperforming their male counterparts. It is essential to direct attention towards female writers and their well-being. ANA, in its current state, may not adequately cater to the needs of all writers.
The upcoming ANA National Election will be a litmus test to determine whether female writers within ANA are truly valued beyond being used solely for garnering votes for their male counterparts. I firmly believe that deserving individuals like Hajia Farida should also be considered for the top leadership positions within the association.

ANA PRESIDENCY: HAJIA FARIDA MUHAMMED TAKES CAMPAIGN TO PROFESSORS EGBOKHARE, RAJI, OSOFISAN, AND MRS. BUKOLA LADOJA

On Friday, the 1st of September 2023, Hajia Farida embarked on her second Presidential Campaign visit, this time to Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.

It's worth noting that Hajia Farida Muhammed had previously visited Osogbo, the capital of Osun State, to announce her presidential candidacy. During her visit to Osogbo, she engaged with key stakeholders in ANA Osun and effectively communicated her agenda to them.
As part of her ongoing presidential campaign, Hajia Farida made her second visit to Ibadan, where she focused on engaging with critical stakeholders within the state. In contrast to her initial visit, during which she connected with dedicated and committed ANA members to garner support for her ANA Presidential bid, this time, Hajia extensively toured the city of Ibadan to establish connections with influential ANA stakeholders and seek their support.

ANA Oyo members gathered at the U.I. Staff Club to extend a warm welcome to Hajia Farida during her visit. The distinguished ANA Oyo critical members present included: Dr Phil Nwoko, the author of 'Dancing With the Ostrich' (A novel), Mr. Taslim Abiola Layonu (Current ANA-Oyo Chairman), Mr. Freeman Okosun (Assistant National Secretary of ANA), Mr. Ebika Anthony (Former ANA Oyo Chairman and the former National Publicity Secretary of ANA), Mr. Funso Omotoso (Immediate Past ANA-Oyo Chairman), Mr. Kehinde Rufus (Current ANA-Oyo Vice-Chairman), Mrs. Clementina Kezie-Osuagwu (Current ANA-Oyo Secretary), Fakunle Busayo Publicity (Current ANA Oyo Publicity Secretary), Mr. Wasiu Saka (Former Assistant Secretary of ANA-Oyo), Olasumbo Adeogun (Current ANA-Oyo treasurer), Funmi Akinwande (Current ANA-Oyo financial Secretary), Adekunle Olarotimi Ojo (ANA-Oyo Member).
Mr. Taslim Abiola Layonu, the current Chairman of ANA-Oyo and also the Director General of the Hajia Faridah Campaign Organization, extended a warm welcome to Hajia Farida Mohammed and the ANA Oyo members. He expressed his gratitude for their willingness to attend the meeting despite their busy schedules.
He proceeded to introduce the members of the House individually after which Hajia Farida Muhammed was given the opportunity to address the gathering and share her message.
Hajia Farida Mohammed expressed her appreciation to the members of ANA Oyo for their enthusiastic support of her ANA Presidential campaign. She fondly remembered the warm reception they gave her during her previous visit to launch her bid for the ANA Presidency. In particular, she extended her heartfelt gratitude to Mrs. Clementina Kezie-Osuagwu, Olasumbo Adeogun, Funmi Akinwande, and Dr. Phil Nwoko for generously dedicating their valuable time from their busy schedules to engage with her agenda across various ANA Publicity Platforms.
During her address, she took the opportunity to outline her four-point agenda, which includes Inclusive Governance, Human Capital Development, Infrastructure Enhancement, and Revenue Generation. She concluded her speech by assuring the members of the House that she would not let them down if they chose to elect her into office.
In his own remarks, Mr. Freeman Okosun portrayed Hajia Farida as an emblem of harmony, peace and Unity within the ANA community. He proceeded to recount his personal encounters, highlighting how Hajia Farida adeptly resolved potential conflicts that could have escalated into significant crises within ANA. Mr. Okosun affirmed his unwavering commitment to align with her vision for progress and expressed his willingness to set aside his own ambitions to support her success.
Mr. Funso Omotoso and Kehinde Rufus provided their unequivocal support to Hajia Farida and extended their heartfelt prayers for her triumph in the upcoming elections. Similarly, Dr. Phil Nwoko and Mrs. Clementina Kezie-Osuagwu, representing other women writers in ANA-Oyo, expressed their enthusiasm at the prospect of having someone like Hajia Farida Mohammed as the President of ANA. They viewed this potential development as both historic and praiseworthy. Furthermore, they pledged their commitment to mobilizing support from female writers within ANA and beyond to bolster her candidacy.
Mr. Ebika Anthony openly disclosed his strong connection to Hajia Farida Muhammed during his address to the House. He informed the House that they hail from the same state and pledged his commitment to actively support her campaign for victory. Additionally, he emphasized the compelling rationale behind him and fellow ANA Members in the South South region rallying behind her candidacy, emphasizing her status as a beloved native daughter.
Mr. Adekunle Olarotimi Ojo, a dedicated member of ANA Oyo and the Oyo State Chairman of the National Association of Nigeria Theatre Arts Practitioners (NANTAP), expressed his admiration for Hajia Farida Mohammed's decision to run for the ANA Presidency. He offered valuable suggestions to Hajia Farida Mohammed, urging her to prioritize these initiatives once she assumes the role of ANA President. He also extended his best wishes for her success in her presidential campaign.
Mr. Busayo Fakunle and Mr. Wasiu Saka emphatically urged Hajia Farida to prioritize the promotion of peace and unity within ANA once she assumes the presidency. They highlighted the absence of these vital elements in the outgoing national administration of ANA. They counselled Hajia Farida to work towards reconciling all disgruntled members and uniting the association under her leadership.
Following an engaging interactive session with ANA Oyo members, Hajia Farida Muhammed's campaign team, led by her Campaign Director General, Mr. Taslim Abiola Layonu, proceeded to the office of a distinguished Fellow of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA). This eminent figure also happens to be the former president of the Nigerian Academy of Letters (NAL), Francis Egbokhare. Prof. Egbokhare holds the esteemed position of a Professor of Linguistics and serves as a lecturer at the University of Ibadan.
Professor Egbokhare extended a warm welcome to Hajia Faridah Muhammed and her campaign team. During their meeting, Mr. Taslim Abiola Layonu provided Hajia Faridah Muhammed with a brief opportunity to present her agenda to Professor Egbokhare. He explained that their visit was motivated by their desire to secure his support for her presidential campaign within ANA.
After discussing her agenda with Prof. Francis Egbokhare, he offered his full support to Hajia Farida Muhammed. He expressed his strong commitment to promoting women in positions of power and emphasized that the time is ripe for a female writer to lead ANA. Prof. Egbokhare encouraged Hajia Farida Muhammed to inform him of any concrete ways he could assist her in her presidential aspirations beyond mere words. He highlighted that witnessing someone like Hajia Farida Muhammed become the first female ANA President would not only be a momentous occasion in history but also serve as an inspiring example for other women to pursue similar achievements in various fields.
Upon departing from Professor Francis Egbokhare's office, Hajia Farida Muhammed proceeded to Professor Remi Raji's office. Professor Remi Raji, an accomplished poet and Professor specializing in English and Creative Writing at the University of Ibadan, also held the esteemed titles of Fellow and former President of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) from 2011 to 2015.
Professor Remi Raji commended Hajia Farida Muhammed for her decision to enter the Presidential race of ANA. He took the opportunity to reflect on his own experience when he contested against the late Professor Jerry Agada, a former President of ANA and a former Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Professor Remi Raji went on to offer valuable advice to Hajia Farida Muhammed and her team. He stressed the importance of devising a well-thought-out strategy, forming a dedicated team, and engaging with key stakeholders of ANA at the grassroots level. In his view, the ANA Congress, composed of financial members of ANA, holds the power to determine the next President of ANA. Therefore, he urged her to ensure that her campaign reaches all the state chapters and establishes connections with their leaders to secure their support.
Following her departure from Prof. Remi Raji's office, Hajia Farida Muhammed's campaign entourage proceeded to the residence of Prof. Femi Osofisan in Bodija. Prof. Femi Osofisan, an Emeritus Professor of Drama and a former President of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), currently serves as the Chairman of the Association's Advisory Council.
Prof. Femi Osofisan warmly received Hajia Farida Muhammed's campaign delegation and applauded her for entering the ANA Presidential race. He affirmed his commitment to impartiality and ensuring that the upcoming election would be both fair and credible. Prof. Femi Osofisan also highlighted several critical issues that ANA should address, including the need to audit her membership, enhance the development of young Nigerian writers' skills, create platforms for the sale and dissemination of Nigerian writers' works, particularly through electronic channels etc..
Furthermore, he encouraged Hajia Farida Muhammed to intensify her campaign efforts by extending her outreach to other ANA chapters across the country's six geopolitical zones.
Likewise, Prof. Nike Osofisan, the wife of Prof. Femi Osofisan and herself a distinguished professor of computer science, lauded Hajia Farida for her courageous decision to run for the top position within ANA. Prof. Nike Osofisan, who holds the distinction of being the first Nigerian woman to earn a Ph.D. in this field, expressed her admiration for Hajia Farida's candidacy. Notably, she had recently participated in an ANA event commemorating the 10th anniversary of Chinua Achebe's passing. Prof. Nike Osofisan noted that it would be a momentous occasion if Hajia Muhammed were to become the first female President of Africa's largest writers' association.
Lastly, the campaign convoy of Hajia Farida made a halt at Mrs. Bukola Ladoja's residence in Bodija. Mrs. Bukola Ladoja, the wife of the former Governor of Oyo State, Senator Rasheed Ladoja, the President and Founder of the Reading Awareness Society for Development in Africa (RASDA) and serves as an ambassador for the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA). She graciously hosted the campaign team and offered them delightful refreshment.
Mrs. Bukola Ladoja praised Hajia Farida Muhammed for her courageous decision to vie for the top position within ANA. She said, upon learning of Hajia Faridah’s ANA Presidential ambition, she immediately began campaigning on her behalf. According to her, she has since taken Hajia Faridah’s campaign to Kogi and several states in the South East through her 'One Child One Book One Week Project.' The 'One Child One Book One Week Project is specifically designed to kindle a passion for reading among primary and secondary school students in Nigeria. The project was formally introduced during the annual Convention of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) held in Abuja last year.
As she’s taking the project to other chapters of ANA in the South South and South East chapters of ANA, she promised to campaign for Hajia Farida Muhammed and promotes her 4-points agenda to members of ANA in the concerned states.

HAJIA FARIDA MUHAMMED’S HISTORIC VISIT TO ANA OSUN: UNITING WRITERS AND SHAPING ANA'S FUTURE

Hajia Farida's visit to ANA Osun yesterday was not only historic but also praiseworthy. She is a well-known figure in ANA, with an impressive track record of service. She previously held the position of Vice Chairman in ANA Niger and later assumed the role of Chairman for the same chapter. Her dedication and commitment to ANA led her to become the National Treasurer during Denja Abdulahi's leadership. In 2020, she achieved another milestone when she was elected as the Vice President of ANA in an emergency election organized by the association's highest governing body. She is now in her second term, continuing to contribute significantly to ANA's growth and success.

It's worth noting that the outgoing President of ANA, Camillus Ukah, had previously undertaken a similar visit in 2019 when Mr. Muriola Awosemo served as the Chairman of ANA Osun. However, the leadership of ANA Osun, led by Mr. Muriola Awosemo, later aligned themselves with Barr. Ahmed Maiwada, leaving Wole Adedoyin as the sole supporter of Camillus in the entire ANA Osun chapter.

Some candidates hold the belief that visiting ANA Osun is an inefficient allocation of their time and resources. They argue that the state lacks significant electoral influence in the upcoming ANA Presidential election.

Hajia Farida Muhammed's visit to Osun State yesterday brought significant positive changes to the chapter. Her presence had a transformative impact in several ways. Firstly, it resulted in Dr. Femi Ademiluyi attending the meeting, marking his first appearance since the contentious events of 2019 witnessed in Enugu. Secondly, her presence fostered unity within ANA Osun. For those familiar with the dynamics of ANA Osun, Dr. Femi Ademiluyi holds a prominent position in the chapter. Not only was he the founding Chairman of ANA Osun, but he also served as the National Publicity Secretary during the presidency of the Late Alhaji Abubakar Gimba and as National Treasurer during the presidency of Professor Olu Obafemi. It was a pleasure to have the former Deputy Rector of the Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, present at yesterday's meeting.

The Caretaker Chairman of ANA Osun, Mrs. Nikeagbeja Adesanya, took the floor to extend a warm welcome to Hajia Farida Muhammed and Dr. Femi Ademiluyi, opening the meeting with gracious words. She proceeded to provide the attendees with an overview of the meeting's purpose and expressed her appreciation to Hajia Farida for choosing to bring her campaign to Osun.
In a similar spirit, Dr. Femi Ademiluyi commended Hajia Farida Muhammed for her decision to enter the ANA presidential race, noting that no female writer had previously attempted such a feat. He emphasized the historical significance that would accompany the election of a female writer to the highest position within ANA. Dr. Femi Ademiluyi then shared insights from his experience in ANA politics, recounting the strategies and dynamics during the presidencies of Mallam Abubakar Gimba and Prof. Olu Obafemi.
He highlighted the pivotal roles played by notable figures such as Prof. Femi Osofisan, Prof. Olu Obafemi, Odia Ofeimun, Dr. Wale Okediran, and Denja Abdulahi in ANA's development and growth. Additionally, Mr. Femi Omoniyi, the Caretaker Secretary of ANA Osun, expressed his appreciation to Hajia Farida for choosing to launch her campaign within the ANA Osun chapter. He remarked that her presence in Osun signified her genuine intentions for the chapter's welfare. Mr. Omoniyi also addressed the issue of reconciling ANA factions within the state, noting that a reconciliation committee had been established and was actively working towards reuniting the disaffected members with the larger ANA Osun community.
In a further effort to promote reconciliation, Mr. Femi Omoniyi encouraged Dr. Femi Ademiluyi to leverage his influence and resources to support the reconciliation committee's efforts in reintegrating the aggrieved members into the mainstream ANA Osun.
Hajia Farida Muhammed was allotted an hour to address the gathering and share her vision for ANA should she assume the role of President. With her customary eloquence, she presented her background and qualifications to the assembly. Subsequently, she elaborated on her comprehensive four-point agenda, which encompassed:
1. Inclusive Governance: She emphasized the importance of an all-inclusive approach to ensure the smooth running of the association.
2. Human Capital Development: Hajia Farida stressed the need to invest in the development of ANA's human resources, recognizing that people are a valuable asset.
3. Infrastructure Enhancement: She discussed her plans for improving the association's infrastructure to provide a better platform for ANA's activities.
4. Revenue Generation: Hajia Farida highlighted her strategies for generating revenue to sustain and support ANA's initiatives and growth.
Her presentation offered a clear roadmap for her potential presidency, outlining her commitment to strengthening ANA on multiple fronts.

CHIEDU EZEANAH EXTENDS APOLOGY TO DENJA ABDULAHI OVER DEFAMATION ALLEGATIONS REGARDING ANA LAND

In a heartfelt gesture, Chiedu Ezeanah has tendered a sincere apology to Denja Abdullahi for his previous statements that inadvertently cast aspersions on Mr. Abdullahi's character.

The apology is in relation to the contentious issue of ANA Land, and serves as an attempt to mend the rift caused by the divisive politics of leadership succession within the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA).

Chiedu Ezeanah reflected on his long-standing acquaintance with Mr. Denja Abdullahi, which dated back to 2008 when they first met after Ezeanah's relocation from Lagos to Abuja. The two enjoyed an amicable friendship devoid of any confrontations, with shared interests in the literary world.

The camaraderie took an unfortunate turn in 2019, during the period of ANA's leadership transition. Ezeanah and Abdullahi found themselves supporting opposing factions, leading to a rupture in their friendship. The ANA Land matter was seized upon by both camps as a rallying point, inadvertently contributing to a divisive atmosphere among ANA members.

Acknowledging his role in exacerbating the situation, Ezeanah expressed regret for amplifying the call for accountability regarding ANA Land. He candidly admitted to frequently invoking Denja Abdullahi's name, believing that his insights would provide ANA members with valuable information. In particular, Ezeanah alleged that Abdullahi had received funds from the ANA Land Developer.

Founded by visionary artist Tom Block, IHRAF has emerged as a powerful catalyst for change in the artistic and literary realms across Africa. Through its various initiatives, IHRAF has nurtured, published, and showcased the talents of numerous African writers and artists, fostering a sense of community and a platform for expression.
At the heart of IHRAF's impact is IHRAF Publishes, a platform that has tirelessly championed African voices. Countless African writers have found their works published and shared with a global audience, amplifying diverse narratives and shedding light on the rich cultural tapestry of the continent.
A defining moment for IHRAF came in 2020 when it collaborated with the Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW) to organize the END SARS National Poetry Competition. This innovative contest was a response to the urgent need to address police brutality and assault through the arts. The synergy between IHRAF and SYNW resulted in the publication of "END SARS Rhythms," an anthology of poems capturing the essence of the protest and its impact.

This monumental change reflects the organization's evolution and expanded focus, solidifying its commitment to advocating for human rights through the power of art.

In an inspiring move, the International Human Rights Art Movement aims to amplify its impact and reach as it continues its noble journey of using art as a vehicle for social change. The rebranding reflects the organization's dedication to fostering a global movement that harnesses the creative expression of artists to shine a light on human rights issues worldwide.

As part of the rebranding process, the organization has introduced a fresh and dynamic logo that symbolizes its renewed vigor and purpose. This emblem encapsulates the essence of the International Human Rights Art Movement's mission - to promote awareness, understanding, and action surrounding human rights through various art forms.

Visitors to the newly revamped website will notice a transformation in the nomenclature, with all references to IHRAF now replaced by IHRAM. MY ENCOUNTER WITH THE LATE ALHAJI BALARABE MUSA – WOLE ADEDOYIN

The name Alhaji Balarabe Musa is synonymous with Nigerian politics, deeply ingrained in the collective consciousness. My initial introduction to this towering figure came through my father, himself a committed socialist and politician. Additionally, my government textbook provided insights into his significance. Little did I know that I would eventually establish a meaningful political connection with the late statesman. In the realm of progressive politics and politicians in Nigeria, Alhaji Balarabe Musa takes a preeminent position.
My inaugural interaction with the illustrious statesman and former Governor of the former Kaduna state traces back to 2010, coinciding with my formal enrollment into the People's Redemption Party (PRP). My entry into the party was facilitated by the late Comrade Laoye Sanda, who extended a personal invitation to me and entrusted me with the position of State Secretary of the party. Over time, I also assumed the role of State Publicity Secretary.
Upon my association with the Oyo State Chapter of the People's Redemption Party (PRP), the party's membership was sparse, to say the least. Nevertheless, a modest party Secretariat existed at Labiran.
Guiding the party then were Elder Ibrahim Gazali as the Chairman, while Comrade Laoye Sanda assumed the role of Southwest Chairman.
The People's Redemption Party, under the leadership of the late Balarabe Musa as National Chairman, exemplified principled values and a commitment to the welfare of the masses.
Upon my entry into the party, I introduced a cohort of dedicated young politicians and assumed responsibility for correspondence. The late Alhaji Ibrahim Gazali entrusted me with considerable autonomy, and I upheld this privilege responsibly.
Within the People's Redemption Party, it was solely Comrade Laoye Sanda who engaged directly with Alhaji Balarabe Musa on matters pertaining to the party's requirements or significant actions to be taken in its name.
On a particular occasion after a swift party Secretariat meeting in Labiran, where a crucial matter necessitated discussion with Alhaji Balarabe Musa, Alhaji Ibrahim Gazali and I journeyed to Comrade Laoye Sanda's residence. There, Comrade Laoye Sanda connected with Alhaji Balarabe Musa via phone, conveying our message. Following the meeting, Comrade Laoye Sanda presented me with Alhaji Balarabe Musa's contact, granting me direct communication privileges. He explained that further visits were unnecessary and encouraged me to engage with him personally.
This marked the genesis of my amicable rapport with Alhaji Balarabe Musa. Whenever information required transmission to the PRP's national headquarters, and with Chairman Alhaji Ibrahim Gazali's consent, I briefed Alhaji Balarabe Musa accordingly.
One day, Alhaji Balarabe Musa and I engaged in an extensive phone conversation that lasted nearly an hour. Our dialogue revolved around topics of socialism and progressive politics, and the insights I gained from that discourse profoundly altered my perspective on Nigerian politics.
I was taken aback when I discovered that Alhaji Balarabe Musa, whom I had known primarily through phone conversations, was actually a farmer. Despite often telling me he was in his farm and would call back later, he consistently followed through on his promises to call.
While fulfilling my role as the Oyo State Secretary of the Coalition for a New Nigeria (CNN), the Late Alhaji Balarabe Musa would often reach out to me to inquire about the progress of the Coalition within Oyo State. He consistently displayed eagerness to hear updates about our efforts in advocating for the liberation of the masses, who were placed at risk by the actions of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) under the political leadership of the former President Goodluck Jonathan.
In addition to his responsibilities with the Coalition for A New Nigeria, Alhaji Balarabe Musa was also actively coordinating the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP).
Throughout my political engagement spanning the People's Redemption Party (PRP), Coalition for A New Nigeria (CNN), and Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP), I shared a robust political relationship with the late Alhaji Balarabe Musa. He imparted invaluable wisdom and knowledge, contributing significantly to my understanding of Northern Politics.
Following the 2011 governorship election, Alhaji Balarabe Musa contacted me with a proposal to encourage Comrade Laoye Sanda to contest on the PRP platform in Oyo state. Given that Comrade Laoye Sanda had retired from active service, both the late Alhaji Ibrahim Gazali and I encouraged him to run under our party, PRP. However, Comrade Laoye Sanda declined our persuasion, revealing later that he had provided substantial support to the previous Governor of Oyo state, Senator Abiola Ajimobi in 2011. Notably, Comrade Laoye Sanda was subsequently appointed as a member of the governing council of the Polytechnic Ibadan by the late former governor.
The decision of the late Comrade Laoye Sanda to decline the opportunity to become the governorship candidate for the People's Redemption Party in Oyo state caused significant distress to Alhaji Balarabe Musa. He expressed to me his dissatisfaction with Comrade Laoye Sanda's choice to not contest under the party's banner during the 2011 elections.
After the Coalition for A New Nigeria concluded its mission, Alhaji Balarabe Musa encouraged us to embrace the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) and carry forward our endeavor. At that time, he held the position of national Chairman within CNPP. Subsequently, I had the privilege of being appointed as the Oyo State Secretary of the Conference.
The late Alhaji Balarabe Musa provided continuous support, serving as both a mentor and a source of political guidance during my time in PRP and CNN. His passing on November 11, 2020, deeply saddened me, leading me to reflect that his departure marked the conclusion of an era of progressive politics in Nigeria.
I feel fortunate to have been mentored by such a prominent and forward-thinking political figure whose impact on Nigerian politics will always be remembered in history.

She is currently pursuing a degree in English at a Nigerian university and holds a National Diploma Certificate in Mass Communication. Boluwatife believes that every individual is a character in the grand narrative of life.

Bamidele Shakiroh Adewumi, a distinguished graduate of Ekiti State University, Oyo Campus, specializes in English Language and Literary Studies. A fervent poet and gender advocate, Bamidele ardently supports UN Sustainable Development Goals 4 (Quality Education) and 5 (Gender Equality). She is the driving force behind Black Girl's Tale, an initiative dedicated to boosting the confidence of secondary school girls and empowering them to excel both academically and socially. Bamidele's tireless efforts also extend to championing the rights of the girl child, working relentlessly to eradicate abuse and discrimination.

Babatunde Dorcas Oluwanifemi, an alumnus of Yinbol College, Orogun Ibadan, and a current student at the University of Ibadan, is a passionate poet with a penchant for advocacy. Her dedication to amplifying the voices of the voiceless has led her to the world of poetry and art. In addition to her literary pursuits, Babatunde is the creative mind behind Dorkey Bae Bag Designs, showcasing her entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to multifaceted creativity.

UDENTA@60: A SHORT PROFILE OF PROF UDENTA O. UDENTA

Professor Udenta O. Udenta is a distinguished scholar renowned for his expertise in African and comparative literature, cultural studies, and aesthetic theory. Presently, he holds the esteemed position of Professor of Cultural Studies and Creative Writing while serving as the Director General of the African Writers Institute located in Abuja.
Having ascended to the role of Senior Research Fellow in African Studies and Senior Lecturer at the School of Humanities at Abia State University, Uturu in 1996, Professor Udenta O. Udenta's academic journey has been marked by notable achievements. Over the span of 2001 to 2008, he underwent specialized training in various institutions such as the University of Bradford (UK), University of Melbourne (Australia), Massey University (New Zealand), Singapore Mediation Centre, United States Institute for Peace (USIP), Inter-Governmental Agency on Development (IGAD), and the Institute of Security Studies (South Africa). These endeavors equipped him with proficiencies in conflict indicators, early warning signals, alternative dispute resolution strategies—particularly restorative justice—and post-conflict reconstruction and development modalities.
Professor Udenta O. Udenta boasts a substantial literary output comprising more than 21 authored and edited books. His influence extends to over 100 papers presented at both national and international conferences, seminars, workshops, and expert gatherings. Noteworthy among his works is a comprehensive collection encompassing his formative fictional, dramatic, poetic, philosophical, and cultural creations across six volumes. His scholarly contributions span various themes, including "Crisis of Theory in Contemporary Nigerian Literature and the Possibilities of New Materialist Direction," "Revolutionary Aesthetics and the African Literary Process," and "Heroism and Critical Consciousness in African Literature," among others.
Beyond his academic achievements, Professor Udenta O. Udenta has played pivotal roles in organizations such as the Centre for Alternative Policy Perspectives and Strategy (CAPPS) as the Director of Strategy and Communications. He also serves as a Distinguished Fellow at the Abuja School of Social and Political Thought. In his consulting capacity, he has lent his expertise to international institutions including the World Bank, DFID, UNDP, EU Nigeria Mission, USAID, and numerous others, addressing matters ranging from culture and development to conflict mitigation strategies, democratic institution strengthening, and organizational capacity building.
Professor Udenta O. Udenta has been a prominent advocate for pro-democracy and civil rights causes in Nigeria. He was actively involved in the resistance movement against the autocratic regime of General Sani Abacha, demonstrating his commitment to democratic ideals under the banners of Eastern Mandate Union (EMU) and NADECO. His activism led to several arrests and detentions, culminating in a significant period of confinement in June 1998. Following General Abacha's demise, he was released by General Abdulsalami Abubakar and assumed the role of National Secretary of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) during Nigeria's transition to the Fourth Republic.
His influence reaches beyond Nigeria, as he participated in international leadership programs and addressed global audiences on political, strategic, and leadership matters. Notably, he presented before the National Leadership Councils of prominent organizations including the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), National Republican Institute (IRI), International Foundation for Election Systems (IFES), and the National Democratic Institute (NDI) in Washington DC in August 1999.
Professor Udenta O. Udenta hails from Mgbowo in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State, Nigeria. He is married to Princess Vivian Udenta and is the proud father of two sons, Chidera and Chinweikem.

MY ENCOUNTER WITH THE LATE PROF. J.P. CLARK - WOLE ADEDOYIN
My first encounter with the Late Prof. J.P. Clark happened during my secondary school days when we studied his renowned poem, "The Casualties." Little did I know that I would have the opportunity to meet the poet in person.
"The Casualties" by J.P. Clark sparked my love for poetry. During my secondary school years, I also delved into his other two beautiful poems, "Ibadan" and "Abiku," which captivated my heart. I was so taken by these works that I committed them to memory and can still recite them to this day.
As I later participated in the ANA Oyo meetings and the Olaudah Equiano Poetry Reading Sessions of Educare Trust Exhibition Centre, I fondly read Prof. J.P. Clark's poems with the attentive members. His verses resonated deeply with me and inspired me to share the beauty of his words with others.
Fast forward a few years later, the Society of Young Nigerian Writers which I founded in 2016 initiated the esteemed JP Clark Society as a heartfelt honor to the iconic Nigerian poet and playwright, Prof. J.P. Clark.
The JP Clark Literary Society is a dedicated organization committed to preserving and promoting the literary legacy and works Prof. J.P. Clark.

Through various initiatives, the society hopes to celebrate Clark's profound contributions to African literature and culture, organizing events, seminars, and conferences that explore the themes in his poetry and plays. With a focus on fostering critical discussions and supporting aspiring writers, the JP Clark Society stands as a vibrant community that continues to inspire and elevate African literature for present and future generations.
Besides establishing the Society to promote the legacy and works of Prof. J.P. Clark, I also wrote an article highlighting his remarkable body of works. To my surprise, it was this very article that caught the attention of the renowned poet and playwright himself.
One day, as I was blogging on my notebook at home, my phone suddenly rang. When I answered the call, a voice on the other end asked if I knew who was speaking. Not recognizing the voice, I replied with a "no." The voice then revealed itself to be that of Prof. J.P. Clark. I was utterly shocked and overwhelmed to hear from one of Africa's greatest literary figures.
Prof. JP Clark informed me that he had read my article about him and was also aware of the JP Clark Society that I had established. To my excitement, he extended an invitation for me to visit the University of Lagos to discuss the new initiative further.
The very next day, I found myself at the JP Clark Centre of the University of Lagos, where I had the privilege of meeting Prof. J.P. Clark and his Personal Assistant. He had been eagerly awaiting my arrival. During our meeting, he graciously offered me beer and snacks like cashew nuts and groundnuts.
As we sat together, Prof. J.P. Clark attentively reviewed the membership documents of the JP Clark Literary Society. During the discussion, he decided to rename the initiative, now calling it the JP Clark Society. He also took the time to edit and refine the mission, vision, and objectives of the Society, adding his invaluable insights and wisdom to the project.
On that eventful day, Professor J.P. Clark generously donated all of his complete works to the JP Clark Society, taking the time to personally autograph each book before presenting them to me. Alongside this, he expressed his desire to introduce me to Professor Hope Eghagha, who was then the Head of the Department of English at the University of Lagos.
Together, we headed to the Department to meet Prof. Eghagha, but unfortunately, we were informed that he had already stepped out. Disappointed but undeterred, we returned to the JP Clark Centre.
During our time together, Professor J.P. Clark wholeheartedly endorsed the JP Clark Society, and this remarkable visit was even featured in the Nigerian Tribune on April 22nd, 2016.
Before his passing, Professor J.P. Clark reassured us of his intention to provide financial support to the JP Clark Society, ensuring its continued growth and impact.
I was humbled and honored when Professor J.P. Clark commended me for the numerous Literary projects I was undertaking at that time. He also shared insightful stories of his days in the Mbari Club, which was once headed by the late Professor Ulli Beier.
Today, the JP Clark Society is taking strides towards its mission. We have already established a vibrant Facebook group, where members enthusiastically share articles, news, papers, and essays related to the life and legacy of the late Professor J.P. Clark. Additionally, we are currently working on creating a blog that will showcase his exceptional works and feature articles about his life and accomplishments.
Through the JP Clark Society, we are committed to preserving and promoting the life and works of Professor J.P. Clark, keeping his memory alive for generations to come.
As we move forward, we are hopeful that this year will see the JP Clark Society holding physical meetings, fostering a sense of community and collaboration among enthusiasts and scholars alike.
May the soul of Professor JP Clark rest in perfect peace. Amen.

CAUCASUS JOURNAL OF MILTON STUDIES SET TO PUBLISH MORE NIGERIAN AND AFRICAN WRITERS – WOLE ADEDOYIN
The Milton Society of Georgia, under the visionary leadership of Professor Edward Raupp, Professor of English Language and Literature at Gori State University has announced its commitment to amplifying the voices of Nigerian and African writers in the literary landscape. Following the successful release of Vol. 2 No. 2: June 2023, the Caucasus Journal of Milton Studies (CJMS) will now feature more works from the vibrant Nigerian and African literary community. The recent issue showcased the brilliant poetry of Nigerian Poet Michael Chukwudi, marking the beginning of this inclusive literary journey. The CJMS, published by the Milton Society of Georgia and helmed by Editor-in-Chief Danna Raupp, is an internationally acclaimed, peer-reviewed journal dedicated to the life and works of English writer John Milton.
Caucasus Journal of Milton Studies (CJMS) e-ISSN: 2720-8222 (online) is a prestigious platform for high-quality, original research with a focus on manuscripts in English. The journal welcomes submissions of various types, including original research articles, review articles, and poetry inspired by the life and works of John Milton.
In a significant step towards fostering literary diversity, the Milton Society of Georgia, under the guidance of Professor Edward Raupp, played a pivotal role in establishing the Milton Society of Africa last year. As part of their commitment to promoting African literary voices, the Milton Society of Georgia sponsored the inaugural Milton Writers Conference held in Ibadan, Nigeria, and the John Milton Writers Competition.
In the Editor's Note from the Vol. 2 No. 2: June 2023 CJMS, the journal's team expressed their delight in featuring contributions from young women pursuing their Master's Degree in Anglistics at Gori State University. Notably, these remarkable students chose to write their theses in English, marking a groundbreaking moment for the university. The recent issue included English translations of two final miniatures from Niko Lortkipanidze and a short poem by Paolo Iashvili, provided by Eter Churadze. Additionally, the translation section introduced a new contributor, Lela Ebralidze, who presented her scientific research on the renowned American poet, Edgar Allan Poe, delighting readers with her Georgian translation of Poe's beloved work, "Annabelle Lee."
The highlight of the issue was the poetry section, featuring the powerful and thought-provoking poem, "DENIAL," penned by Michael Chukwudi, an author of Nigerian-Indonesian heritage. Chukwudi's poem passionately addressed the prevailing injustice in Nigeria, urging for a restoration of justice and an end to the evils plaguing his homeland.
Wole Adedoyin, the driving force behind the project and President of the Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW), played a significant role in fostering this collaboration. His dedication to promoting literary diversity and providing a platform for African writers has been instrumental in making this endeavor a reality.

MEMBERSHIP REVALIDATION FORMS: ANA BEGINS ACCEPTING SUBMISSIONS FROM STATE CHAPTERS

The National Secretariat of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) has officially commenced the acceptance of revalidation of membership forms from state chapters.
In a statement released by Maik Ortserga, the General Secretary, authors and literary enthusiasts who are yet to submit their revalidation forms are urged to act swiftly, as the deadline for submission is rapidly approaching.
The revalidation process is a crucial step taken by ANA to update and maintain accurate membership records, ensuring that the association continues to serve its members effectively. ANA takes pride in being a diverse and inclusive literary community, welcoming authors and readers alike to participate in its events and activities. However, only those who have successfully revalidated their membership will be considered in good standing to attend Annual General Meetings (AGMs), Extraordinary General Meetings (EGMs), and any other upcoming programs.
The decision to enforce revalidation of membership aligns with the resolutions reached during the Extraordinary General Meeting held in Makurdi in July 2020, as well as the AGM of 5th December 2020 in Ilorin. Furthermore, the recent meeting between ANA's national executive committee and the Chairmen/Secretaries in Ilorin in 2023 also endorsed this move.
By ensuring that members revalidate their membership, ANA aims to enhance engagement, foster a stronger literary community, and provide its members with access to a myriad of opportunities and benefits. This revalidation process also supports ANA's commitment to promoting Nigerian literature and supporting authors in their literary pursuits.
