INTERNATIONAL WRITERS’ DAY: SYNW CALLS FOR GOVERNMENT SUPPORT WITH ENDOWMENT FUNDS
The Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW) has issued an urgent appeal to the Federal Government of Nigeria to provide endowment funds for young writers in the country. The society believes that supporting the development of young writers will contribute to the growth of the country's literary scene and create a new generation of writers who will be well-equipped to tell the Nigerian story to the world.
In a statement released today, the President of SYNW, Mr. Wole Adedoyin, said that young writers in Nigeria face numerous challenges, including the high cost of publishing their works and the lack of opportunities for them to showcase their talents. He emphasized that the government's support will play a critical role in addressing these challenges and helping young writers reach their full potential.
"We believe that the future of Nigeria's literary scene lies in the hands of young writers, and it is imperative that we invest in their development," Mr. Adedoyin said. "Endowment funds will provide them with the financial support they need to publish their works, attend literary events, and receive mentorship from established writers. This will not only help them improve their craft but also give them the exposure they need to reach a wider audience."
The SYNW is calling on the Federal Government to create a dedicated endowment fund for young writers, which will provide financial support for their projects, workshops, and other literary initiatives. SYNW SET TO START HER ANNUAL WEBINAR LECTURE SERIES
SYNW (Society of Young Nigerian Writers) is excited to announce the start of its annual webinar lecture series, beginning on February 28th, 2023. This year's series will focus on various aspects of creative writing, publishing, e-book production, editing, children's literature, indigenous literature, copywriting, and more.
The lecture series is designed to bring together aspiring writers and seasoned professionals to share their knowledge and experiences with each other. The series will provide a platform for attendees to learn from experts in the field and gain valuable insights into the writing and publishing industry.
According to Mr. Wole Adedoyin, the President of SYNW, "We are excited to kick off our annual webinar lecture series. This year's series will feature a range of topics that are relevant to the needs of both aspiring and established writers. We are confident that the attendees will find the series informative, engaging, and inspiring."

HOW SYNW PUBLISHED OVER 300 YOUNG WRITERS THROUGH ITS DIGITAL PUBLISHING PROJECT
The Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW) was established with the objective of promoting literary creativity and intellectual discourse among young writers in Nigeria. One of the ways that SYNW has achieved this objective is through its Digital Publishing Project. Through this project, the society has been able to publish over 300 young writers in Nigeria and beyond.
The Digital Publishing Project of SYNW was established as a means of providing young writers with a platform to showcase their literary works. The project has enabled young writers to publish their works and reach a wider audience. The project has also enabled SYNW to contribute to the development of literature in Nigeria and beyond.
To date, SYNW has published several e-books through its Digital Publishing Project and three hardcopy publications including the END SARS RHYTHMS published by the International Human Rights Art Festival (IHRAF). These publications are available on the Obooko website at www.obooko.com. The e-books cover various literary genres such as poetry, short stories, and essays. Some of these titles include Rising Voices, Songs of Freedom, Songs of Sorrow, Voices from Oja Oba Market, Moonlight Songs for Pa Nelson Mandela, Moonlight Tunes for an African Child, Upcoming Voices, among others.
One of the advantages of the Digital Publishing Project is that it has provided young writers with an opportunity to publish their works without having to go through the rigorous process of traditional publishing. This has given many young writers a chance to showcase their talent and contribute to the development of literature in Nigeria.
It has also provided young writers with a means of reaching a wider audience. Through the Obooko website, readers from different parts of the world can access and read the works of these young writers. This has helped to promote Nigerian literature and showcase the creativity of young Nigerian writers to the rest of the world.
Another benefit of the Digital Publishing Project is that it has encouraged young writers to improve their craft. By providing a platform for young writers to publish their works, SYNW has encouraged them to write more and improve their writing skills. This has helped to develop a new generation of talented writers in Nigeria.
It also provided a means of promoting social justice and addressing social issues in Nigeria. Many of the works published through the project focus on issues such as corruption, gender inequality, human rights, and social justice. Through these works, young writers are able to raise awareness and contribute to the ongoing conversation on these important issues in Nigeria.
Finally, the project serves as a means of empowering young writers in Nigeria. By providing a platform for young writers to publish their works, SYNW has empowered them to take control of their own literary careers. This has helped to create a new generation of writers who are confident in their abilities and are able to take charge of their own destinies.

HOW SYNW TRAINED OVER 500 YOUNG WRITERS THROUGH THE IBADAN WRITERS TRAINING CENTRE
The Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW) has been making great strides in developing young writers in Nigeria. With their Ibadan Writers Training Centre, SYNW has been able to train over 500 young writers in various aspects of writing, publishing, and editing. This project started in 2012 with the aim of honing the writing skills of young Nigerian writers and has since been making significant progress.
The quarterly workshops organized by SYNW cut across various aspects of writing, including poetry writing, short story writing, children's literature, publishing, radio playwriting, and literary journalism. These workshops were free for participants and also offered free certificates of participation and membership into the Society of Young Nigerian Writers. This gesture is a testament to the commitment of SYNW to develop the writing skills of young Nigerian writers.
Over 500 young writers have benefited from this project so far. These writers have gone on to become published authors, editors, and poets. The impact of this project on their writing skills cannot be overemphasized, as many have attested to the positive impact it has had on their writing journey.
The Ibadan Writers Training Centre was created for this purpose, to serve as a writers' training institute for honing and grooming the skills of young Nigerian writers. The center was equipped with state-of-the-art facilities to ensure that participants had the best learning experience. The trainers were carefully selected from among the best writers, publishers, and editors in Nigeria. This was done to ensure that participants had access to quality training and mentorship.
Over 50 writers, publishers, and editors were invited to lecture during these workshops. This was to ensure that participants had access to a wide range of experts who could offer insights and practical advice on writing, publishing, and editing. This exposure to industry professionals has helped to broaden the horizons of the participants and opened up new opportunities for them in the world of writing.
The success of the Ibadan Writers Training Centre has led to the establishment of other writers' academies across Nigeria. The Ibadan Writers Training Centre has been dissolved into the Ibadan Publishing Academy and the Osogbo Writers Academy. These academies offer similar training and mentorship opportunities to young Nigerian writers. The establishment of these academies is a testament to the impact of the Ibadan Writers Training Centre and the commitment of SYNW to develop young Nigerian writers.
The Ibadan Writers Training Centre has also played a significant role in promoting the culture of writing and reading in Nigeria. By training young writers, SYNW has helped to create a new generation of writers who are passionate about telling their stories and preserving the rich cultural heritage of Nigeria. This has helped to promote literacy and education in Nigeria, which is crucial for the development of the country.
The Ibadan Writers Training Centre has also created a network of young writers who can collaborate and support each other in their writing journeys. This network has helped to create a sense of community among young Nigerian writers and has encouraged them to work together to achieve their writing goals.
SYNW has also organized various writing competitions and festivals to promote the work of young Nigerian writers. These events have helped to showcase the talents of young writers and provided them with opportunities to interact with industry professionals. This has helped to boost the confidence of young writers and encouraged them to continue writing.

SYNW SALUTES TOYIN ADEWALE-GABRIEL ON HER BIRTHDAY
The Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW) has expressed its felicitations to Toyin Adewale-Gabriel on the occasion of her birthday. Toyin Adewale-Gabriel is a distinguished Nigerian writer, a prolific poet, a critic, and an accomplished literary icon. Her impressive contribution to Nigerian literature has brought her numerous awards and accolades. As a result, the SYNW, on behalf of its members, congratulates Toyin Adewale-Gabriel on her birthday.
Toyin Adewale-Gabriel was born in 1969 in Ibadan, Nigeria. She is a well-known poet and a literary critic. She has worked with The Guardian, Post Express, and The Daily Times. She writes in both English and German, and her literary works are a testament to her exceptional talent. Toyin Adewale-Gabriel is an alumna of the prestigious Obafemi Awolowo University, where she obtained her M.A. Lit. degree.
As the co-founder and co-ordinator of the Association of Writers of Nigeria for several years, Toyin Adewale-Gabriel has contributed immensely to the development of Nigerian literature. She has also worked with numerous organizations and institutions, helping to promote literature and foster creativity among young writers. Her published works include Naked Testimonies (1995), Breaking The Silence (1996), Inkwells (1997), Die Aromaforscherin (1998), Flackernde Kerzen (1999), 25 New Nigerian Poets (2000), Aci Cikolata, Gunizi Yayincilik (2003), and Nigerian Women Short Stories (2005). Her poetry and short fiction have won several awards, including the prestigious ANA/Cadbury Poetry Prize and the BBC World Service Short Story Competition.

IBADAN READS SET TO HOST THREE STUDENTS OF GOD’S COMPREHENSIVE COLLEGE ON SATURDAY
Ibadan Reads, a collaborative effort between the Ibadan Book Club and the Conference of Southwest Writers, is set to host three exceptional students of God’s Comprehensive College on Saturday, the 4th of March, 2023. The event will hold at the Oyo State Library Board, opposite Cocoa House, Ibadan, by 12 noon prompt.
The three students, Awolowo Nifemi Elizabeth, Adegoke Azeezat, and Inioluwa Victoria Olowe, have been selected to participate in the event as a result of their impressive performance in the Ibadan Book Club's monthly readings and other activities. They will be given an opportunity to share their thoughts and experiences on the importance of reading and education.
God’s Comprehensive College is one of the best schools in Ibadan, and it is one of the supporters of Ibadan Book Club. The school has been consistent and dedicated in participating in IBC’s monthly readings and other activities. Marcus Ugboduma, a staunch member and one of the patrons of the club, facilitated the membership of the college into the club.
Mrs Ayobami Odunyemi, the Coordinator of Ibadan Book Club, expressed her delight in hosting the students. She emphasized the importance of reading and education in the development of individuals and communities, and she encouraged everyone to participate in the event.
The event promises to be a memorable one as it will feature various activities such as book reviews, spoken word performances, and interactive sessions with the students. Participants will also have the opportunity to purchase books from various genres and authors.

NIGERIAN BOOK FAIR TRUST MOURNS THE PASSING OF ICONIC PUBLISHER AND MENTOR, PA GABRIEL ONIBONOJE

Nigerian Book Fair Trust (NBFT) has expressed its deepest condolences to the family of Late Pa Gabriel Omotayo Onibonoje, who passed away recently. In a statement issued by the council and management of NBFT, the organization commiserated with Onibonoje’s family, management, and staff of G.O Onibonoje Publishers, Nigerian Publishers Association, and the entire players within the Nigerian book ecosystem on the death of this illustrious personality.
NBFT Chairman, Dare Oluwatuyi, and Secretary, Abiodun Omotubi, expressed their deepest condolences on behalf of the organization to the family of Pa Onibonoje and everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.
According to the statement, Pa Onibonoje was a man full of wisdom, enviable character, and hospitality, who was on record as being one of the eminent pioneers that set the pace for modern indigenous book publishing in Nigeria and Africa. For NBFT in particular, Late Pa Onibonoje was not only an icon within their ranks, but also a former recipient of the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award of the organization.
Pa Onibonoje was a man full of passion for the development of indigenous book publishing in Nigeria and Africa, and was an author of many books, the pride of many scholars. He was a trainer and developer of minds, and many great owners of indigenous book publishing firms in Nigeria today were nurtured and mentored by him. He was a man full of vision and vigour during his very active days in the book publishing business.
In his honour, NBFT acknowledged that the evergreen works of literature he authored and published will always make his memory fresh in the minds of lovers of books in many generations to come. Pa Onibonoje lived a fulfilled life, and his legacy will continue to inspire many in the Nigerian book industry.

HOW DR. WALE OKEDIRAN FUNDS AND SUPPORTS SYNW IN ORGANIZING BOOK READINGS IN 24 STATES THROUGH THE READ ACROSS NIGERIA PROJECT
In April 2016, Dr. Wale Okediran, a renowned Nigerian author and physician, donated funds to sponsor the Society of Young Nigerian Writers' (SYNW) first national reading campaign project in celebration of his 63rd birthday. The project, called Read Across Nigeria (RAN), aimed to promote the culture of reading among young Nigerians and to commemorate 63rd birthday of Dr. Wale Okediran.
With Dr. Okediran's support, the SYNW was able to organize book readings in twenty-four states of the federation, including Oyo, Ogun, Abuja, Kano, Ebonyi, Imo, Anambra, Kogi, Osun, Ogun, Lagos, Kwara, Sokoto, Ondo, Rivers, Bayelsa, Edo, Delta, and Akwa Ibom. This was the first time book readings were held simultaneously in 24 states of the federal republic of Nigeria.
The RAN project was a huge success, with hundreds of young Nigerians participating in the book readings across the country. The readings were conducted in schools, libraries, halls, and other public spaces, and participants were given certificates of participation. The project was widely covered in the media, and pictures taken in those states were updated on Wikimedia.
Dr. Wale Okediran's personality drove the RAN programme, and his love for writing and reading inspired many young Nigerians to participate in the project. Lovers and fans of Dr. Okediran volunteered to organize readings on that day, and his support helped to make the RAN project a huge success.

HOW PROF. REMI RAJI @ 50 NATIONAL POETRY COMPETITION ELEVATES SYNW TO NATIONAL RECOGNITION

In November 2011, Prof. Remi Raji @ 50 National Poetry competition was organized to commemorate the 50th birthday of renowned Nigerian poet, Prof. Remi Raji. The competition was a huge success, attracting over two hundred entries from over twenty states of the federation. The competition not only celebrated Prof. Raji’s milestone, but also gave the SYNW a wider recognition and platform to showcase their literary prowess.
The Prof. Remi Raji @ 50 National Poetry competition was a unique initiative, and the first of its kind from the Society of Young Nigerian Writers. The competition was aimed at discovering and promoting young and talented poets, while also celebrating the works of Prof. Remi Raji, who has made significant contributions to Nigerian literature over the years.
The competition was open to all Nigerian poets, and entries were submitted only in English. The quality of entries received was impressive, and the judges were impressed with the creativity and originality of the submissions.

HOW SYNW STARTED IN THE FORMER HOUSE OF PROF. WOLE SOYINKA

The Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW) began its journey in 2011 with its inaugural meeting held in the former house of the Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, behind UI Main Gate. The Late Dr. Remi Adedokun, former HOD of Theatre Arts at the University of Ibadan, had graciously provided the venue for the meeting. Since then, the SYNW has come a long way, evolving into a dynamic literary organization that supports and promotes the works of young Nigerian writers.
One of the significant achievements of the SYNW is its affiliation with the International Authors Forum (IAF), a global platform for writers and literary organizations. The SYNW has also collaborated with various international organizations, including the Alliance Francaise (Nigeria), 100 Thousand Poets for Change, Woman Scream International Poetry and Arts Festival, International Women Writing Guild, International Writers Association, and International Human Rights Art Festival (IHRAF).
In 2019, the SYNW was recognized and mentioned in a book titled “TEEN LIVES AROUND THE WORLD: A GLOBAL ENCYCLOPEDIA (2 VOLUMES)” edited by Karen Wells. The book described the SYNW as the only active young writers’ body in Nigeria, highlighting the organization's significance in promoting literary creativity among young Nigerians.
The SYNW has initiated several literary projects aimed at promoting reading, writing, and publishing processes. One of such projects is the Fagunwa Day, which involves an Inter-secondary Schools Creative Writing Competition in Yoruba Language, reading contests, and the Fagunwa Memorial Lecture. The SYNW quarterly Workshop, which started via the Ibadan Writers Training Centre in 2012, has trained over 1,000 young writers. The Digital Publishing Project has published over 500 young writers, while the Annual Chinua Achebe Memorial lecture, now in its 7th edition, has published over 300 young essayists and poets.
Another SYNW project is the Read Across Nigeria, which aims to promote the reading culture across the country. Through this project, the SYNW took readings to over 20 states of the federation in 2016. Additionally, the SYNW’s 2000 E-Books per school project, also known as the Paperless Book Club project, encourages and assists public secondary schools in building E-Libraries and Electronic Book Clubs.
The SYNW has established several book clubs in various locations, including Ibadan Book Club, Osogbo Book Club, Iseyin Book Club, Ogbomosho Book Club, Eko Book Club, Atiba Book Club, Arewa Book Club, Akure Book Club, Ilesa Book Club, Abeokuta Book Club, Ekiti Book Club, and Edo Book Club. These book clubs aim to promote reading culture and literary creativity among young Nigerians.
The SYNW has also established initiatives aimed at promoting the works of renowned writers, including Khalil Gibran Society, Ulli Beier Society, J.P Clark Society, Fagunwa Society, and John Milton Society of Africa. For instance, the Khalil Gibran Society was established with support from the Gibran National Committee in Lebanon while the John Milton Society of Africa was founded with support from the John Milton Society of Geogia.
The SYNW has developed correspondence courses on creative writing (Poetry, Prose, and Drama) and the life and works of the Late D.O. Fagunwa. These courses aim to promote literary creativity and provide aspiring writers with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in the field.

SYNW MOURNS ONIBONOJE GABRIEL OMOTAYO, THE FOUNDER OF ONIBONOJE PUBLISHERS
The Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW) mourns the passing of Onibonoje Gabriel Omotayo, the Founder of Onibonoje Publishers, who died on February 23, 2023, at the age of 92. Omotayo was a renowned educationist, publisher, and farmer who contributed significantly to the development of education and publishing in Nigeria.
This was contained in a release issued by Wole Adedoyin, President of the Society of Young Nigerian Writers in Ibadan, Oyo State Capital.
Omotayo was born on September 10, 1930, in Ijebu Jesa, Oyo State, and attended St Matthew's Primary School in Ijebu Jesa from 1940 to 1947. He then proceeded to St Luke's Teachers' Training College, Ibadan, where he studied from 1951 to 1956. Omotayo went on to study at the University of Ibadan from 1958 to 1961, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree.
After his education, Omotayo started his career as a teacher, serving as a Pupil Teacher in Ikoton from 1948 to 1950. He then became a Grade Three Teacher and Head Master at St Philips, Aiyetoro, Ile-Ife, from 1953 to 1954. He later became a Grade Two Teacher at Anglican Boys' Secondary Modern School, Ibadan, from 1957 to 1958. Omotayo became a Graduate Teacher at St Luke's Teachers' Training College, Ibadan, from 1961 to 1963, and at Ibadan Boys' High School in 1964.
In 1958, Omotayo established Onibonoje Press in Ibadan, which later became Onibonoje Press and Book Industries Nigeria Limited. He served as the Chairman and Managing Director of the company from 1968 to 1979 and as Chairman/Publisher since 1980. Omotayo was also the Chairman/Farmer of Onibonoje Agricultural Industries Nigeria Limited since 1978. He was a member of the Executive Committee of the International Publishers Association in 1972 and 1973.
Omotayo was a prolific author, having published several books on history, civics, and book publishing. His publications include Africa in the Ancient World: A History Book I (Ibadan, Onibonoje Press, 1958), Africa From the Rise of Islam to the End of the Slave Trade: A History Book II (Ibadan, Onibonoje Press, 1958), Africa in the Modern World: A History Book III (Ibadan, Onibonoje Press, 1958), Civics for Nigerians (Ibadan, Onibonoje Press, 1959), and The Indigenous Book Publishing for National Development (Ibadan, Onibonoje Press, 1965).
Omotayo was a recipient of several awards in recognition of his contributions to education, literature, and agriculture. He received the Ife Book Fair Merit Award in 1985 and was awarded the Outstanding Farmer of the Year by the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, in 1985-86 and 1986/87.
In his personal life, Omotayo was a lover of reading, writing, current affairs, and community development. He was married to Josephine Olufunlayo Arojojoye in 1958, and they had four sons and two daughters.
Onibonoje's passing is a great loss to the Nigerian publishing community. His contributions to the growth of the industry cannot be overemphasized, and he will be greatly missed. However, his legacy lives on through the many young publishers he mentored and the works he published.
The President of SYNW, Wole Adedoyin, expressed his condolences to the family of Omotayo and the Nigerian literary community. Adedoyin described Omotayo as a visionary educationist and publisher whose contributions to the growth of publishing in Nigeria would be greatly missed.

The Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW) is thrilled to celebrate the birthday of Lola Shoneyin, an accomplished Nigerian poet and author, born on February 26, 1974, in Ibadan, Nigeria. SYNW congratulates her on her special day and acknowledges her significant contributions to the literary world and African literature in particular.
Lola Shoneyin has established herself as a bold and daring writer, often exploring feminist themes, female sexuality, and the struggles of domestic life in Africa in her works. Her debut novel, The Secret Lives of Baba Segi's Wives, published in the UK in May 2010, quickly became a bestseller and has been translated into several languages. Lola has also published three volumes of poetry, showcasing her exceptional talent in writing.
In recognition of her talent and potential to shape African literature, Lola Shoneyin was named as one of the 39 Sub-Saharan African writers under 40 with potential and talent to define trends in African literature on the Hay Festival's Africa39 list in April 2014. She has won several awards, including the PEN Award in America and the Ken Saro-Wiwa Award for prose in Nigeria, and was also shortlisted for the Orange Prize in the UK for her debut novel.

Razinat is a renowned feminist literary critic, award-winning author, and influential academic with numerous publications to her credit.
Razinat Talatu Mohammed's journey in the world of literature has been remarkable. Her extensive research and writing have had a significant impact on the study and understanding of African literature, especially in the areas of feminist literary criticism and gender studies. Her critical insights and innovative ideas have enriched the discourse on African literary studies and contributed to the development of literary scholarship in Nigeria and beyond.

She was a two-time judge for the prestigious Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Prize for literature in 2015 and 2017. She was also a Resident Writer in El-Gouna, Egypt, from May to July 2011. Since 2013, she has been the Chief Adjudicator for the annual Senior Secondary Schools National Essay Competition tagged, Wole Soyinka International Cultural Exchange (WSICE) in honour of Prof. Wole Soyinka.

"AN URGENT CALL TO ACTION: EXERCISE YOUR CIVIC DUTY AND BUILD A BETTER NIGERIA"
Dear Fellow Nigerians,
On behalf of the Society of Young Nigerian Writers, we would like to urge all eligible voters to go out and exercise their civic duty by voting in today elections. The future of our great country lies in our hands, and it is our responsibility to elect leaders who will represent us and work towards building a better Nigeria.
We must all shun vote buying and any form of electoral malpractice. Our vote is our power, and we should not allow anyone to buy it. We must vote based on our conscience and for the candidate who we believe will work towards our collective goals.
We commend the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the security agencies for their level of preparedness for the election. They have worked tirelessly to ensure that the election is free, fair, and credible. We urge them to remain impartial and ensure that the election is conducted in a peaceful and transparent manner.
As young writers, we are concerned about the state of our education system, which has been plagued by inadequate funding, poor infrastructure, and low morale among teachers. We call on the elected leaders to prioritize education and work towards improving the standard of education in Nigeria.
We also call on the government to address the issue of youth unemployment, which has become a major challenge in the country. The government must create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive and provide opportunities for our youth to be gainfully employed.
We are also concerned about the security situation in the country, particularly the activities of insurgents, bandits, and other criminal elements. We urge the government to take decisive action towards ending the insecurity in the country and ensuring that Nigerians can go about their daily activities without fear of attacks.
We call on our leaders to prioritize the welfare of the Nigerian people. The government must ensure that basic amenities such as electricity, water, and healthcare are available to all Nigerians.
We also call on the government to address the issue of corruption, which has hindered the progress of the country for many years. The government must take steps to ensure that corrupt individuals are brought to justice and that public funds are used for the benefit of the people.
We believe in the unity and diversity of Nigeria and urge our leaders to work towards fostering unity and promoting national integration. The government must ensure that all Nigerians are treated equally, regardless of their ethnicity or religion.

WHY WE STOPPED FAGUNWA DAY AFTER THE 7TH EDITION - SYNW
The Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW) through its initiative Fagunwa Society started Fagunwa Day in 2011. This event was formerly known as Fagunwa Night, and it was created to celebrate the life and works of Late D.O. Fagunwa, a renowned Nigerian writer who authored several books in the Yoruba language.
During Fagunwa Day, students were tested in Yoruba writing and reading skills. The event also featured impromptu competitions in Yoruba poetry, prose, and drama. In addition, Fagunwa Memorial Lecture was part of the event. This lecture was delivered by renowned scholars who shared their knowledge and experience on Yoruba literature.
The first D.O. Fagunwa Memorial Lecture was delivered by Dr. Bayo Adebowa, Founder of the African Heritage Research Library and Cultural Centre at Adeyipo, Ibadan. The second Fagunwa Lecture was delivered by Prof. Dotun Ogundeji, while the third edition of D.O. Fagunwa Memorial Lecture was delivered by Mr. Jare Ajayi.
Fagunwa Literature Prize (https://fagunwaday./2014/03/29/fagunwa-literature-prize/) was also inaugurated, and winners were awarded cash prizes and certificates. The event was sponsored by various organizations, including Fagunwa Foundation, Nelson Publishers, University of Ibadan Press, among others.
The annual event ran from 2011 to 2017, and it has published over 200 Yoruba teen authors. Fagunwa Day was an avenue of testing the Yoruba writing and reading skills of secondary school students. It was a platform that promoted Yoruba language and culture among young Nigerians.
The event also attracted two of the children of Late D.O Fagunwa, Mrs. Diwura Fagunwa and Mr. Diipo Fagunwa. It also attracted important personalities like the Late Prof. Akinwumi Isola, Late Chief Supo Kosemani, Late Dr. Adebayo Faleti, Prof. Dotun Ogundeji, Late Remi Adedokun, Mr. Jare Ajayi, Akin Bello, to mention but a few.
The total of 50 schools had so far participated in the event before it stopped. Wole Adedoyin is the Coordinator of the event. The event created a platform for secondary school students to showcase their talents and improve their Yoruba language skills. The Fagunwa Day was a unique opportunity for young Nigerians to learn and appreciate Yoruba literature.
Unfortunately, Fagunwa Day stopped after the 7th edition due to lack of sponsorship. The event was costly to organize, and it required a significant amount of funds to run. Despite efforts to attract sponsors, the event could not secure enough funding to continue.
The Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW) appreciates the support of all sponsors, partners, and participants who made the event a success. We also extend our gratitude to all the distinguished scholars and personalities who delivered the Fagunwa Memorial Lectures and graced the events with their presence.

IBADAN READS TO HOST AWOLOWO, ADEGOKE, INIOLUWA AT THE FEBRUARY EDITION
Ibadan Book Club, in partnership with the Conference of Southwest Writers, is set to host the February edition of Ibadan Reads, featuring three of the city's most promising teen writers. The event will be headlined by Awolowo Nifemi Elizabeth, Adegoke Azeezat, and Inioluwa Victoria Olowe.
The event is scheduled to hold on the 4th of March, 2023, at the Oyo State Library Board, opposite Cocoa House, Ibadan, by 12 noon prompt. The Ibadan Reads initiative is a monthly gathering that seeks to promote literacy and foster a reading culture in the ancient city of Ibadan.
The Ibadan Reads event promises to be an exciting and enlightening experience for lovers of literature and the arts. The audience will have the opportunity to engage with the writers, ask questions, and network with like-minded individuals. The event is open to the public and admission is free.
The Ibadan Book Club is a literary organization based in Ibadan that aims to promote reading culture, improve literacy, and foster intellectual growth in Ibadan and beyond. The Conference of Southwest Writers is a professional organization that provides support and networking opportunities for writers in the Southwest region of Nigeria.

HOW IBADAN BOOK CLUB HOSTED 62 WRITERS IN 2021 AND 2022
Ibadan Book Club, one of the leading literary organizations in Nigeria, successfully hosted 62 writers in 2021 and 2022. The monthly readings were held at the Oyo State Library Board, and the events drew a diverse range of writers and book lovers from all over Ibadan and beyond.
The Coordinator of Ibadan Book Club, Odunyemi Ayobami, recently expressed her delight at the success of the readings, stating that the events had not only promoted a culture of reading and writing but also provided an opportunity for the club to engage with writers and authors from different backgrounds and genres.
Established in 2011 by the Society of Young Nigerian Writers, the Ibadan Book Club has consistently sought to promote a love of literature and reading among Nigerians, especially the youth. The monthly readings, which are open to the public, have become a fixture of the literary scene in Ibadan, attracting writers, poets, journalists, and book enthusiasts from across the city and beyond.
Last year, the Ibadan Book Club executed a project tagged "Read Nigeria Project" in conjunction with Adwinsa Publications (Gh.) Limited, a publishing firm based in Ghana and Nigeria. The project was aimed at promoting local literature and authors and encouraging the reading of Nigerian books. The monthly readings, which were part of the project, featured various writers and authors from within and outside Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital.
According to Ayobami, the Read Nigeria Project was a huge success, and the monthly readings, which were one of the key components of the project, were very well received by the public. "We are thrilled that the project was able to bring together various stakeholders in the literary industry to promote a reading culture and celebrate Nigerian authors," he said.
The monthly readings, which are free and open to the public, have featured an impressive roster of writers and authors over the years.
Ayobami noted that the monthly readings have become an important platform for emerging and established writers to showcase their work and engage with readers and other writers. "We are proud that the Ibadan Book Club has become a hub for literary excellence and a platform for promoting the work of Nigerian writers," she added.
The Ibadan Book Club has also been at the forefront of promoting a reading culture among young people in Nigeria. Ayobami noted that the club has organized several book clubs for children and teenagers in Ibadan, which have been successful in promoting a love for reading among young people.

FAGUNWA SOCIETY LAUNCHES CORRESPONDENCE COURSE ON FAGUNWA LIFE AND WORKS
To mark this year’s International Mother Language Day, the Fagunwa Society, another interest group of the Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW) and the initiator of Fagunwa Day which ran from 2011 to 2017 is proud to announce the launch of its correspondence course on the life and works of one of Nigeria's most celebrated authors, D.O. Fagunwa. This exciting new initiative aims to increase awareness and appreciation of Fagunwa's legacy among a new generation of readers.
The correspondence course, which will be conducted entirely through the Fagunwa Society's blog, is open to students of all ages and backgrounds. Participants will have access to a wealth of resources, including detailed biographies of Fagunwa, critical essays, and analysis of his most famous works, such as Ireke Onibudo (1949; “The Sugarcane of the Guardian”), Irinkerindo Ninu Igbo Elegbeje (1954; “Wanderings in the Forest of Elegbeje”), and Adiitu Olodumare (1961; “The Secret of the Almighty”); a number of short stories; and two travel books.."
"We are thrilled to offer this unique opportunity to study the life and works of D.O. Fagunwa," said Mr. Wole Adedoyin, Coordinator of the Fagunwa Society. "Fagunwa's stories are an integral part of Yoruba's literary heritage, and we believe it is important to preserve and promote his legacy for future generations."
The correspondence course will be structured around a series of modules, each of which will focus on a different aspect of Fagunwa's life and works. Participants will be able to work through the course at their own pace, with support and guidance from the Fagunwa Society's team of experts.
Upon completion of the course, participants will receive a certificate of completion from the Fagunwa Society, which will be a valuable addition to their educational portfolio. They will also be eligible to join the Society as members and participate in its various activities, including conferences, workshops, and events.

SYNW URGES YOUNG WRITERS TO WRITE IN THEIR NATIVE LANGUAGES

On the occasion of the 2023 International Mother Language Day, the Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW) has issued a press statement urging writers across the world to write in their native languages. The society believes that writing in one's mother tongue is an essential aspect of cultural preservation and linguistic diversity.

In many parts of the world, there are hundreds of languages spoken by different ethnic groups. However, due to globalization and the dominance of a few languages, many of these languages are at risk of becoming extinct.

SYNW believes that native languages are an essential part of cultural heritage, and the use of these languages in literature is essential for preserving the uniqueness and diversity of cultures. According to UNESCO, over 6,000 languages are spoken in the world, and about 43% of them are endangered. In Nigeria, over 500 languages are spoken, with some of them on the verge of extinction.

According to the President of SYNW, Mr. Wole Adedoyin, "Language is a critical part of our cultural identity. When we lose our language, we lose our connection to our past, our ancestors, and our cultural heritage. Writing in our native language is not only a way of preserving our culture and heritage, but it is also a way of expressing ourselves fully and communicating effectively with our communities."

The SYNW is calling on writers, particularly young writers, to embrace their mother tongue and use it in their literary works. The society also encourages schools and educational institutions to teach and promote the learning of indigenous languages. This way, the younger generation can appreciate their cultural heritage and preserve their mother tongue.

Furthermore, the SYNW recognizes the challenges that writers may face when writing in their native language, particularly in a globalized world. However, the society believes that the benefits of preserving language and cultural identity outweigh the challenges. As such, the SYNW is offering support and resources to writers who wish to write in their mother tongue.

Creative Writing
Definition - A creative writer is one who goes outside the bounds of normal professional, Journalistic, academic r technical forms of literatures.

He is a positive disruptor usually identified by an emphasis on narrative craft, character development, contents creation and the use of literary tropes or with various traditions of poetry and poetics.

In a nutshell a creative writer can best be described as a rebel, a non- conformist and radical of some sort. He steps beyond the boundaries to carve a niche in his chosen area or wherever he has the highest comparative advantage.

The basic role of creative writing.

You are free to convey whatever idea, thought or image you want, but must be written with intention.

The core of this is the ability to communicate an idea effectively, you must consider the purpose for which your message is intended and must be explicit.

A creative writer must be able to construct for various audiences.

The main purpose of creative writing must be intentional, in entertainment, information and persuasion .

Freedom of information act

Definition: The freedom of information act makes public records and information more freely available, provide for public access, the public record and information to the extent consistent with the public interest and the protection of personal privacy, protect serving public officers from adverse consequences.

This act was passed on May 28th, 2011 when it was signed into law after a very long legislative debate that lasted over 12 years. The law was passed, essentially to enable the public, access government information in order to ensure transparency and accountability.

Under the freedom of information act anyone can request, subject to certain exceptions, information held by a public authority.

Benefits of Fol act and limitations

1. To make government more transparent
2. To make government more accountable
3. To improve decision making
4. To assist the public to better understand decision making process
5. To engage public participation in politics limitation.

Limitation

If it would cost too much or take too much staff, time to deal with the request, the request is vexatious, the request repeats a previous request from the same person.

Under fol records, that are available under an existing scheme, free or for a fee are excluded from the fol act.

The marriage between fol act and creative writing

Going by the definitions of both benefits and limitations: it is safe to conclude that a marital union of some sort is totally inevitable.

The Fol act is all about transparency and accountability in governance whilst creative writing is all about radicalism and originality in thought processes with applicability to governance as a watch dog.

My believe is that, as a writer, we are the watchdog of every society, we use our writing prowess to convey different messages to different audiences, not minding whose ox is gored.

The Folact creates an enabling environment for open expression of thoughts on governance, transparency, accountability and ultimately dealing and exposing untoward situations in governance.

It is a clarion call on both sides to work together in giving the nation a rebirth in governance.

It is a marriage of positivity and ultimately addressing the ills of the society.

SYNW CONGRATULATES MARK A.C. OGBODO ON 40TH BIRTHDAY

The Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW) has extended her warm congratulations to Dr. Mark A.C. Ogbodo on his 40th birthday. Dr. Ogbodo is a practicing Medical Doctor and a prolific writer.

This was contained in a press statement issued by Wole Adedoyin, President of the Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW).

Dr. Ogbodo is the author of the acclaimed book Amour Maternel: 2021, which has been certified and approved as a Supplementary Reader by the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council. It is also the main text for the Junior Secondary School (JSS II) in Benue State.
His essay, The Broken Black Spell, was published in There Was a Man, the sixth anthology of poems/essays in memory of Chinua Achebe, by the Society of Young Nigerian Writers, Anambra State Chapter, in 2021. In addition, his novel The Journey; A Flight to Greatness After a Long Walk, was published in 2017.
As a natural leader, Dr. Ogbodo currently holds several key positions in the medical and educational sectors. He is the Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Benue State Branch, and the Assistant Secretary of the Association of Government General Medical and Dental Practitioners, Benue State Chapter and Assistant Secretary; Association of Nigerian Authors, Benue State Chapter and was the National President of the Unique Secondary School Old Students Association (UNISECOSA) from 2006 to 2017.
Dr. Ogbodo's contributions to the literary and medical fields are well-known and respected. His works have been widely read and appreciated by both the young and old. As a medical doctor, he has devoted his life to helping people and providing quality medical care. As a writer, he has touched many lives with his words and ideas.
The Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW) recognizes Dr. Ogbodo's outstanding achievements and contributions to the literary and medical fields. His dedication and commitment to promoting education, health, and wellness are truly remarkable. We congratulate him on his birthday and wish him continued success in all his endeavors.

Mr. Adedapo is a respected figure in the Nigerian publishing industry, having served as the Immediate Past Chairman of Nigerian Book Fair Trust, former President of the Nigerian Publishers Association (NPA), and a serving member of the Data and Statistics Committee of the International Publishers Association (IPA).

The Mbari Series, a monthly literary discussion series that focuses on creative writing and Nigerian Literature, is pleased to announce its lineup for the February Edition.

The Mbari Series is an initiative of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) under the leadership of Mr. Camillus Ukah, the current ANA President. It is a platform that promotes literary discourse and provides a space for critical engagement with Nigerian literature. It has played a significant role in shaping the discourse around Nigerian literature and in promoting the development of the literary scene in Nigeria.

OKEDIRAN’S ‘WEAVING LOOM’ TO BE ADAPTED INTO MOVIE

'Weaving Loom,' a finalist for the 2008 Wole Soyinka Prize for African Literature, explores themes of sibling rivalry, wife inheritance, widowhood dispossession, cultural and religious conflicts, and conflicts between traditional and modern healing methods. The story is set in Eleyin, a fictional town where the weaving of traditional Aso Oke is a source of livelihood and industry.
The film will be directed by Niji Akanni, an accomplished filmmaker with an extensive portfolio of successful works. The adaptation promises to be a cinematic masterpiece, with a storyline that will captivate and inspire viewers.
The conflict in the story arises from the death of Chief Bature, the owner of the looms. Bature involves his sons Matthew and Peter in the loom business, while his eldest son, Cletus, is sent to acquire the skills that will transform the weaving looms into a modern-day factory. However, the father unknowingly creates a sense of rivalry, which erupts after his death.
The conflict intensifies when Chief Bature, a member of the Ogboni cult, is taken to the hospital, against the cult's wishes. He dies, and the Ogboni demand severe punishment for the sons, who allowed their father to die in the hospital. The situation culminates in a major crisis, with the sons attempting to bury their father without completing the necessary rites.
Josiah Bature's youngest wife, Arike, faces the dilemma of living without her husband and dealing with her hostile mother-in-law. She learns that she must be inherited by her husband's elder brother, Kasali, while the family quarrels over the rightful ownership of the weaving looms.
As the story progresses, social vices such as wife inheritance, traditional healing methods, and cultural conflicts are explored in detail. The film promises to shed light on these important issues and raise awareness.
