Sincere 9gerian: Great news! What is needed now is for govt to subsidize the procedure so that more people will benefit. These are the things govt should be subsidizing and not fuel.
Govt can also help incorporate stem cell transplant into the health insurance scheme.
But overall, prevention is better than cure. With more health education, we will have less and less cases of sickle cell anaemia.
Well done to all those that made it possible. Yep... |
While some people see it as good news, this is actually bad for the economy of Nigeria and death sentence for local airlines.
No international airline should be allowed to land and take off from four different airports in the country. They should pick two.
Either you take Lagos and Kano or Abuja and Enugu.
Yea. But was that not what Oduah and her team was trying to do? Distribute these International flights to diff Airports and give space to Local airlines. But NO, this is Nigeria where common sense is set on its head and Nepotism raised to the sky.... Imagine Northerners accusing smone like Oduah of 'hating the north', when it was d same Oduah that recently completely Remodeled and expanded d Kano Airport that they just commissioned (after more than 30yrs of no one touching it), and began d building of another International terminal for that Airport. The same Oduah that completed the TRACON centre in that Airport; made it one of d stations for d newly installed Doppler Systems; provided a new Wind Shield System in d Airport; as well as other Infrastructural Upgrades. Yet that Hyncinct Gov of theirs says 'Oduah is against Kano', just so as to further himself as d 'defender of Kano and d North' against 'outsiders'- the same method a tiny Northern Elite hv used to successfully perpetuate themselves on a hapless and gullible majority!!... Politics › Nigeria Records 65% Reduction In Polio Cases- The Guardian by taharqa(op): 4:53pm On Nov 10, 2013 |
Nigeria Records 65% Reduction in Polio Cases; on the path to Eradicating it in the North 29 per cent increase in routine immunisation within one year
DESPITE security challenges in northern parts of the country, Nigeria is the only polio endemic country in the world that has recorded substantial reduction, 65 per cent, in polio cases and 29 per cent increase in routine immunisation this year. Executive Director National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr. Ado Gana Muhammad, told The Guardian yesterday that the country has also not recorded any case of Type 3 polio and only one case of Type 2 in 12 months even as it has improved herd immunity in high-risk areas of the country to 80 per cent.
However, the other two polio endemic countries Afghanistan and Pakistan have continued to report cases of wild polio virus (WPV) throughout the year.
Also, the latest edition of the Weekly Polio Update published yesterday by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), read: “No new WPV cases were reported this week. The total number of WPV cases for 2013 remains 49 (all WPV1s). The most recent WPV1 case in the country had onset of paralysis on 10 September (from Kano). “No new Circulating Vaccine Derived Polio Virus type 2 (cVDPV2) cases were reported in the past week. The total number of cVDPV2 cases for 2013 remains one (with onset of paralysis on 6 June, from Borno).”
Muhammad told The Guardian, “I think the progress we have made is due to commitment from the leadership from President Goodluck Jonathan. We continue to improve on the quality of the immunisation programme and campaigns. We have gone microscopic in terms of deploying measures. We have improved the programme in such a way that we reach every child. “We are still having challenges with Borno and Yobe. The major problem is insecurity but we try to reach every child. We have improved routine immunisation. People are demanding for vaccines now. We are engaging faith based organisations and all stakeholders. There is no longer generic way of dealing with the polio situation. “We are almost 12 months without reporting any type 3 polio case. Nigeria is the only country that has reduced polio by 65 per cent within one year. We have improved routine immunisation from 52 per cent to 83 per cent by September 2013. In addition, we have improved herd immunity to not less than 80 per cent and that is an indicator that we are near eradication of the virus.” http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/index.php/features/science/137729-nigeria-records-65-per-cent-reduction-in-polio-cases |

What he asked for amounts to playing the Godfather that Anambrarians had eschewed

UBTH Records 2nd Stem Cell Transplant; Only such Centre in WA The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) in Edo State, Nigeria on Friday said it had conducted the second successful stem cell transplant for a 15- year-old sickle cell patient in Benin.
Dr Nosakhare Bazuaye, consultant Haematologist and Coordinator of UBTH stem cell transplant centre, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin.
NAN reports that UBTH is the only hospital in Nigeria and West African performing such transplant.
Bazuaye, who spoke on behalf of the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Prof. Michael Ibadin, said the operation was successful and that the patient’s genotype had change from SS to AA.
“In 2011, we announced our first transplant for a patient that had sickle cell disease.
“We have done a second successful transplant for a 15-year-old boy whose transplant took place 102 days ago.
“The first patient that was transplanted is two years post transplant now, his haemoglobin is AA and he is perfectly okay.
“By WHO regulations, patients are certified fit after 100 days of transplant, so the current patient is over a hundred day and his genotype is AA and has not had any crises since then.
“So with this, we are now discharging him to go home”, the consultant said.
Bazuaye said that the second transplant had to be conducted after two years due to inadequate facilities and financial constraints of the patients.
“We have about three per cent of Nigerians who have this sickle cell disease.
“We are hoping that the Federal Government and NGOs would put some money into establishing an international centre in UBTH to provide this mode of therapy for most Nigerians.
“We are happy that we have successfully done a second transplant.
“We are hopeful that with assistance from the Federal Government and NGOs, we will do more transplants and make transplant free and within the reach of most Nigerians.’’
The haematologist said that the therapy could also be used to cure other diseases like blood cancers, bone marrow failure, cancers of the bones and combined immune deficiency syndrome in children.
“For sickle cell transplant, it is better we do the transplant when the children are below 15 years old because at that age, there are usually less complications.
“But for diseases like cancers of the blood, people below 50 years can benefit from stem cell transplant,” he said.
He said that the first patient was paid for by the hospital, adding that ”we are expecting that subsequent patients should pay for their transplants.
“The second patient has been able to pay some part of the medical bills, and we are hoping that the remaining part of the bill would be paid and then he can go home,” he said. http://businessdayonline.com/2013/11/uniben-teaching-hospital-records-second-stem-cell-transplant/ |
