Education / ASUU: Union's Demand Is N3tn, Not N130bn by tdade(m): 11:27am On Oct 02, 2013
The National President of the Academic Staff
Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr. Nasir Fagge, has
accused the federal government of not telling
Nigerians the truth about the demand of the
union as regards the government’s statement
that the union's demand has been met.
According to Fagge, ASUU had a Memoranda of
Understanding (MoU) with the federal
government for it to spend over N3 trillion to turn
around the fortune of all federal and state
universities and also to better the lot of the
educational sector in the country.
“The agreement is for the federal government to
spend N800 billion yearly for the next four years,
but what we have is government talking about
N130 billion which is very insignificant," he said.
Fagge made the revelation Tuesday, while
fielding questions from journalists, at the end of
the congress of the Benue State University
chapter of ASUU, in Makurdi.
He said: "Our demands are genuine, and it is
based on the mutual agreement entered into in
2009 by government and ASUU. We urge the
government to be responsible to that agreement.
"President Goodluck Jonathan said the strike is
being politicised but the truth is that it is
government that is playing politics with our
demands. It is as if every problem in this country
is now being politicised.
"I want to ask one basic question: Is it political to
ask government to be responsible enough to
implement an agreement she willingly entered
into.
"It is important to state clearly that we are a
union of intellectuals, and we cannot accept a
situation were the tail will wag the dog. Whatever
we do is for the betterment of the Nigerian
university system.”
In addition, the ASUU national president said: "It
is important to place on record that the struggle
is a continuous one but the implementation of the
2009 agreement is key to improving on facilities
in our universities and placing it at par with what
we have in other parts of the world."

I believe that you are one of the best mods I've seen on nairaland. You are strict but fair. I'm not surprised that people always complain about you because I know that Nigerians do not like strict people, neither do we like restrictions, but restrictions are absolutely necessary to prevent chaos and anarchy.

However, you have just one flaw. You should know that it's not everything that you should respond to. You also need to evaluate your responses. It doesn't help if you try to caution an uncouth fellow by using provocative and insulting words. But this just shows that you are human and thus have flaws like everyone else.

Keep up the good work and continue to enforce the rules in a strict but fair manner and remember, you don't need to respond to everything that's said.
Fairly said, mate.

Good work by the prof. One key thing he pointed out is that Nairobi shows that, irrespective of where you are, you are still unsafe. Believe it or not, it could have been right in the 1 square mile city of London, or in Manhattan itself, just like it was in Mumbai, just like it is everyday in Pakistan, just like it is in Borno, just like it was in Boston, and if drastic measures aren't taken, just like it'll be for decades, maybe even centuries to come.

not necessarily so. I'm introverted and yes, I'm creative, but that's not to say most extroverts aren't. The problem is, the tend to want to 'have fun' ever so often that they may not harness their creative ability to max potential. It requires quiet time, total attention amongst other things, and those aren't traits peculiar to extroverts.

Localamos: These appear more like the traits of a melancholic person.
.
A mel is creative, but other external factors influence his natural traits and as such, he may not exhibit all these traits while still being creative.
.
One thing that makes normative studies interesting is that behavioral patterns are not a cast on stone. Rather, they are varied , vast and dynamic.
Exactly my thought! I'm 100% melancholic according to the shrink who gave me an iq and personality test and I have to say, its more a mel thing in my opinion. I also doubt most extroverts exhibit these traits.

Islam for Muslims / Re: Between Western Ideals And Islamic Identity by tdade(m): 3:04pm On Sep 27, 2013
tintingz: Lol... So what happens to the war fought by David, solomon, moses, Joshua the battle of jericho to mention the few, all in the command of Jehova in the bible.

Did they runaway or turn the other cheek? grin
Christianity started from Mathew because that's when Christ was born. The old testament is mainly about the Israelites.

Honestly, I've seen muslims who are quite liberal, and now I'm starting to consider them as fake muslims. Why? Well because even in Nigeria, you have some of them pointing to the lifestyle of Mohamed to justify BH's antics.

The problem with Islam is that it leaves no room for modernization. Islam came to Nigeria through jihad, and spread through the mid east and north Africa through Jihad. Let's face it: there is NO such thing as 'peaceful' jihad. My question is: if they point to Mohamed as a role model, doesn't that make the terrorists justified over the 'liberal muslims?'

The fact that they consider democracy, feminism, human rights, etc to be synonymous with being western already creates an us-versus-them feeling in the Islam community, and that's why you have the OP posting something as callous and ludicrous as this at this sensitive period.

You're not allowed democracy, wives are like servants to their husbands amongst other things....

PS: I am not trying to compare Islam to Christianity as the first paragraph might imply. Simply just replying - and educating - the lad.

of course the nuclear bomb had no bearing on the outcome of the war - because it had nothing to do with the war!
If I remember correctly, you vilified US for nuking Japan when the war was practically won already and here you are saying you never said that. See how you contradict yourself?

I know the kind of person you are; never bold to admit you're wrong.

Well face it: YOU ARE WRONG!!!
As to your 'Japan wasn't strong' crap: I can't be bothered to argue with you anymore. You lack the intellectual capabilities to handle such an argument. You can't even type coherent english!

And every thing you wrote up there is utter crap! Stop forming that you read those books because I know you still went through google and wikipedia - that's why you gave reference.

Now, you reply me. Do you see that Japan deserved what they got? Do you see it had nothing to do with WW2? If yes, then your 'when the war was practically over' line shows you are, simply put, daft.

I have lots of things to disprove in what you wrote but I won't, cause I know you won't agree even though its correct. Read about the cold war and learn. Henceforth, I won't reply you on this topic again. If you like, write your foul english till you get to Jupiter, I won't reply.

Another good explanation:

This was the scenario back then.
Japan was at war with China. Despite being a
military superpower, their war with China was
using up their resources. During that time, most
of their resources especially oil were coming from
the US. The US did not approve of Japanese
aggression in China and they declared an
embargo on Japan. This means they would stop
supplying Japan with raw materials. So where
would Japan get their resources to continue the
war now?
The Japanese High Command carefully discussed
this and came up with the conclusion that the
Dutch East Indies would be the best place to gain
resources. But they knew that an attack on the
Dutch East Indies would probably bring the US
into the war. So they had to find a way to prevent
the US from fighting with them until they
conquered the Dutch East Indies. That's when
they planned Pearl Harbor. The goal of Pearl
Harbor was to disable the American fleet for a few
months to give them enough time to conquer the
Dutch East Indies and to absorb its resources to
finance their war in China and the US once the
US' navy was rebuilt.
Foreign Affairs / Re: McCain Fires Back At Putin With America's Own Letter To Russians by tdade(m): 8:07pm On Sep 24, 2013
^^^^ I don't see how US attacking Japan has anything to do with WW2 because that's what you claim to be talking about. The perfect explanation of why Japan attacked US:

Here is the real reason why
The escalating conflict between China and Japan
influenced U.S. relations with both nations, and
ultimately contributed to pushing the United
States toward full-scale war with Japan and
Germany.
At the outset, U.S. officials viewed developments
in China with ambivalence. On the one hand,
they opposed Japanese incursions into northeast
China and the rise of Japanese militarism in the
area, in part because of their sense of a
longstanding friendship with China. On the other
hand, most U.S. officials believed that it had no
vital interests in China worth going to war over
with Japan. Moreover, the domestic conflict
between Chinese Nationalists and Communists
left U.S. policymakers uncertain of success in
aiding such an internally divided nation. As a
result, few U.S. officials recommended taking a
strong stance prior to 1937, and so the United
States did little to help China for fear of
provoking Japan.
In 1940 and 1941, President Franklin D.
Roosevelt formalized U.S. aid to China. The U.S.
Government extended credits to the Chinese
Government for the purchase of war supplies, as
it slowly began to tighten restrictions on Japan.
The United States was the main supplier of the
oil, steel, iron, and other commodities needed by
the Japanese military as it became bogged down
by Chinese resistance but, in January, 1940,
Japan abrogated the existing treaty of
commerce with the United States. Although this
did not lead to an immediate embargo, it meant
that the Roosevelt Administration could now
restrict the flow of military supplies into Japan
and use this as leverage to force Japan to halt its
aggression in China. After January 1940, the
United States combined a strategy of increasing
aid to China through larger credits and the
Lend-Lease program with a gradual move
towards an embargo on the trade of all militarily
useful items with Japan.
The Japanese Government made several
decisions during these two years that
exacerbated the situation. Unable or unwilling to
control the military, Japan's political leaders
sought greater security by establishing the
"Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere" in
August, 1940. In so doing they announced
Japan's intention to drive the Western imperialist
nations from Asia. However, this Japanese-led
project aimed to enhance Japan's economic and
material wealth so that it would not be
dependent upon supplies from the West, and
not to "liberate" the long-subject peoples of Asia.
In fact, Japan would have to launch a campaign
of military conquest and rule, and did not intend
to pull out of China.
At the same time, several pacts with Western
nations only made Japan appear more of a
threat to the United States. First, Japan signed
the Tripartite Pact with Germany and Italy on
September 27, 1940 and thereby linked the
conflicts in Europe and Asia. This made China a
potential ally in the global fight against fascism.
Then in mid-1941, Japan signed a Neutrality
Pact with the Soviet Union, making it clear that
Japan's military would be moving into Southeast
Asia, where the United States had greater
interests. A third agreement with Vichy France
enabled Japanese forces to move into Indochina
and begin their Southern Advance. The United
States responded to this growing threat by
temporarily halting negotiations with Japanese
diplomats, instituting a full embargo on exports
to Japan, freezing Japanese assets in U.S. banks,
and sending supplies into China along the
Burma Road.
Although negotiations restarted after the United
States increasingly enforced an embargo against
Japan, they made little headway. Diplomats in
Washington came close to agreements on a
couple of occasions, but pro-Chinese sentiments
in the United States made it difficult to reach
any resolution that would not involve a Japanese
withdrawal from China, and such a condition
was unacceptable to Japan's military leaders.
Faced with serious shortages as a result of the
embargo, unable to retreat, and convinced that
the U.S. officials opposed further negotiations,
Japan's leaders came to the conclusion that they
had to act swiftly. For their part, U.S. leaders
had not given up on a negotiated settlement,
and also doubted that Japan had the military
strength to attack the U.S. territory. Therefore
they were stunned when the unthinkable
happened and Japanese planes bombed the
U.S. fleet at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.
The following day, the United States declared
war on Japan, and it soon entered into a military
alliance with China. When Germany stood by its
ally and declared war on the United States, the
Roosevelt Administration faced war in both
Europe and Asia.

Why are you so obtuse? Because power changed hands, mate. The Japan of WW2 was considered a military superpower - and they were. Had they succeeded in destroying US' fleet, they would have conquered China - and much of east Asia - and fought with US to the last. Unfortunately, US' pacific fleet wasn't in pearl harbour at the time. My point is Russia would've been overwhelmed by Japan at the time.

PS: stick to your question. Why did US bomb Japan? I've replied that mate.

To further educate you: the world war ending wasn't a factor for the US to consider cause that's not why Japan bombed them in the first place. I hate pax americana; I prefer pax Briticana.
I side with Russia on this one; but I think the world would be better off with US as the only 'superpower'
The thing with US is that everything they do is always marred by selfish interests; Thing with Russia is that they are worst than Americans in that regard.
Can you see the paradox?

One country is free on the outside but highly dictatorial on the inside; one country is the absolutely opposite.
To those who believe anyone can stand US' military might: wake up from your slumber.
Russia is no Vietnam, and they would not be treated as such.

................
On a more serious note: Those of you calling for the fall of the 'Empire' known as US really should be careful what you wish for. Who would you rather have? China? Russia? Do you know the way these countries are? Be careful o!!!
I'm not sucking up to the US here, but I just consider them to be lesser of the two - or three- evils.
Before attacking me, please understand that I'm with Russia on this one - just not with Putin. He's too anti-western, not just anti-American. Mendelev was better.

After analyzing the situation properly, I find that 50% of Nigerians are of the animal-like mentality that this man exudes - the 50 who support Jonathan, that is.
1.They keep laying claims to Amaechi insulting Jonathan. Now, I think this stems from lack of understanding, the illiterate-driven belief that the president is above criticism or insult and a total travesty of power with regards to the federation.
Take Obama for instance: he his constantly criticized by lawmakers and governors alike, some even call for his resignation(!) But he dare not cause political tensions in their states. Why? Because he doesn't have the power to do so. He is an elected official and thus, making him subjective to valid, albeit constructive, criticism and insult from anyone in the US.
Now come back home to Nigeria - the country where not only the president, but his wife, her imperial majesty who is not in anyway recognized under the constitution as nothing but a mere civilian, can go to a state and try to reduce the authority of the CEO of the state. And all this for what? As Bipi and his likes claim, the Governor insulted the royal family.
My point? Even if Amaechi insulted the king and queen, what is the big deal?
Why not reply him in a diplomatic approach that will show he is spewing rubbish?

Have you seen the land mass of the old soviet bloc. That should never have been one country. There are too many small groups in Nigeria and a break up will expose them to further oppression. My position is not anti-breakup. I am simply stating that the problems in Nigeria can be solved by common sense and tolerance. Do you think Nigerians will develop common sense and tolerance after breaking up? They will simply find new ways to oppress other new fellow citizens.
The only thing that can save Nigeria is true federalism. Please, how do you suggest we achieve that, eh?
The entire point of a break up is so we can have countries where the citizens are homogeneous and that will reduce the oppression significantly.
