PoliticsNigerian Lawmakers Are Highest Paid In The World! by tdade(op): 3:02pm On May 31, 2013
Nigeria ranks among the highest exporters of crude
oil in the world. Billions of dollars accrue to Nigeria
from the sales of crude oil and the economy of the
country is built on the revenues from crude oil
exports. In spite of the huge revenues that come
into Nigeria on daily basis, the Nigerian government
is among the borrowing nations of the world. Nigeria
is among the poorest nations in the world with risky
level of infant mortality rate; malnutrition and child
killer diseases, poor educational and health systems;
crime and other social mischiefs are on the increase.
In the midst of these calamities torturing the people
of Nigeria, the Nigerian lawmakers goes home
monthly with a whopping and staggering amount.
Recently, the lawmakers met to increase the basic
salary for civil servants from 7,000 to 18,000 naira
monthly; that is from about 46 to 120 US dollars per
month. Millions of others are unemployed while few
are employed in the private sector where the take
home pay is far bellow the civil servants’. The
pressure in the Nigerian society has become so
tensed that people are being forced into different
kinds of crime for survival. How much is the pay
package of the Nigerian lawmakers?
How Much Do Nigerian Lawmakers Earn?
Professor Itse Sagay, a renowned scholar of law in
his lecture titled; ‘Legislating for the Common Good:
Contemporary Issues and Perspectives’, to mark the
47th birthday anniversary of the Lagos State
Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Comrade
Opeyemi Bamidele, berated the attitude of the
Nigerian lawmakers as being cruel and tantamount to
betrayal of the trust placed on them by the
electorate. He explained that Nigerian lawmakers at
the lower and upper chambers of the National
Assembly are the highest paid legislators in the
world. Professor Sagay explain that a senator in
Nigeria earns 240 million naira (about 1.7 million US
dollars) in salaries and allowances and a member of
the House of Representatives earns 204 million naira
(about 1.45 US dollars) per annum. There are 109
Senators and 360 members of the House of
Representatives. He went on to explain that an
American Senator earns 174,000 US dollars while a
UK parliamentarian earns about 64,000 US dollars
per annum. Going by the above analysis, a Nigeria
Senator earns almost ten times the salary of his US
counterpart and more than twenty times the salary
of a UK parliamentarian.
He also said that in 2009, the federal legislators
received a total of 102.8 billion naira, comprising 11
billion naira as salaries and 90.96 billion naira as non-
taxable allowances. He wondered how justified it is
for a Nigerian lawmaker to earn more than the
president of the United States of America which is
undoubtedly the largest and richest economy in the
world. President Barack Obama, earns $400,000 per
annum; 1.3 million US dollars lesser than the salary
of a Nigerian senator. He said that the British Prime
Minister, Mr. David Cameron earns just $190,000 a
year which is more than 1.5 million US dollars less
than a Nigerian senator’s salaries. Professor Sagay
also said that the Senate President is on a special
monthly salary of 88.33 million naira, while his deputy
is on 50 million naira; 1.24 billion naira is paid as
quarterly allowances to the 10 principal officers of
the Senate, while other principal officers earn 78
million naira every three months. The situation has
gone so bad that more than 70 per cent of national
income now goes into paying salaries and allowances
of political office holders who form less than one per
cent of the Nigerian population.

olire: Hello please can any one show me the anywhere onthe internet or any source or link to show that our plitical office holders earn more than the U.S president. I am asking because som1 was arguing wit me. I searched the web and i saw somtin like senators earning. 1 million naira as basic salary and Barack obama earning 400,000 dollars. Which is more than 1 million naira.
. Obama's basic salary is $400000. I think his allowances are provided on a needs basis. Our law makers pocket their salary and allowances which amounts to roughly $1.5M their basic salary though is between 10-15 thousand dollars. The remaining 1.4M is bonuses and allowances. Crazy right? Google it to confirm though, it may be more than that.

My last ex still comes around even though she is engaged.
The ones before as follows.

NK (1992-1994): I miss her abstract drawings.

eGuerrilla: Thanks for your reasoned and balanced response.
If what you've provided is an accurate summary Desola's position, I can see how it portends a problem.
There is little - if any - direct connection between the events unfolding in Northern Nigeria and the actions of these conflicted youth.

Having said this, I refuse to detract from the trust of her argument - which highlights the misplaced 'sense of entitlement' that ultimately failed these youth. The statistical data out there does not lie - and there is plenty of evidence that points to major flaws in the socio-personal development of Nigerians kids (in Britain) over the past 20 years.

To suggest - as some commentators have - that this is simply a problem for British society, is to abnegate our responsibilities. In a sense, this kind of thinking also dehumanises our experience, since it foists a permanent victim-complex on our collective consciousness. Can you imagine the Jewish, Polish, Chinese or Indian communities doing the same?

This is a time for introspection, I am afraid.

eGuerrilla: Although I saw this thread begin life, I have been unable to provide any input hitherto due to other distractions...

In my opinion, @Desola is one of the few commentators who has gone straight to the heart of the matter on this subject.

Look at this way folks, unlike Obama, these lads can be deported to Nigeria (which recognises them as citizens under its federal constitution) for the crimes they committed.

Anyone in doubt needs to read the following article: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crime/british-terror-suspects-quietly-stripped-of-citizenship-then-killed-by-drones-8513858.html
Truth is, if you go back to the original threads, you'd find that Desola is attributing these boys' antics to the fact that Nigerians are 'criminalistic' in nature. That is why her and other people keep pointing to BH as justification to their claims. Agreed, We've seen worse in Nigeria but the truth is these boys are what they are because of Britain's tolerance with Islam(as is Nigeria w.r.t BH). And our constitution allows them to be regarded as Nigerians but that doesn't make them less accountable for their crimes as Brits. My point is: unless you're claiming that they committed the crime because of their 'Nigerian blood'(which sounds ridiculous), then their link with Nigeria ought not to be stressed.

kulgee001: I like the answer of this German Scholar when he was asked about terrorism and Islam: He said:

• Who started the First World War, which killed 37 million and injured 22, 379, 053 that includes 7 million civilians? Muslims?
• Who started the Second World War, which killed over 60 million, which was over 2.5% of the world population? Muslims?
• Who killed about 20 million of Aborigines in Australia? Muslims?
• Who drop the nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which killed 166,000 people in Hiroshima and 80,000 in Nagasaki? Muslims?
• Who killed more than 100 million Red Indians in North America? Muslims?
• Who killed more than 50 million Indian in South America? Muslims?
• Who took about 180 million African people as slaves and when 88% of them died, threw them into the Atlantic Ocean? Muslims?
NO
They weren’t Muslims! First of all, you have to define terrorism properly…. If a non-Muslim does something bad… it is crime. But if a Muslim commits the same, he is a terrorist. So first remove the double standard… then come to the point.
*** Just for your information ***
' If truly it is a religion of peace, then i
have nothing against the religion. its the people
who practice it who seem to have a twisted
understanding of it'..... That was my previous post. Now you're being paranoid. Have i mentioned Islam breeding terrorists? My initial post was that the so-called 'real muslims' should do something about it. How can you compare the world wars to extremists? The entire point is that extremists do it in the name of religion so everything you cited is of little meaning with regards to Islam and terrorists.

now with over a billion potential suicide bombers. Don't castigate us over a few extremist.
yeah sure. No biggie. They are only a few extremists who have killed over ten THOUSAND people - just a few!

kulgee001: Oh really. I thought that was already clear for everyone to see.
The only thin clear for everyone to see is the fact that Islam is becoming a menace to the society. How can you say there is an agenda against Islam when we have islamists committing these atrocities in the name of Islam? Stop being deluded man. If truly it is a religion of peace, then i have nothing against the religion. its the people who practice it who seem to have a twisted understanding of it.

If they did, we would see it on the news. All the Imams do after attacks like this is come out and dissociate themselves from the terrorist. You make it sound like there's a hidden agenda against Islam.
Foreign AffairsRe: How Michael Adebolajo Became Radicalized From Schoolboy To Jihadist by tdade(m): 11:39pm On May 24, 2013
One thing that bugs me is how, when things like this happen, you see some muslims tweeting(and posting) 'islam is a religion of peace'. Now, I get their good intentions but I feel, they should instead go on rallies and week-long protests on how islam is a religion of peace so the extremists can understand their version of Islam - rather than sitting in a comfy chair and posting without action. Its gotten to a stage where those who believe in the peaceful version start proving how it is INDEED peaceful.

shymexx: You're right on the money, bruv.

The unemployment rate among black boys between age 17-24 is around 60%(girls have it better). Most of these guys are idle and they're raised within a system that sold them a dream from a young age - only to end up finding out it's a nightmare.

It seems those spreading radical Islam have done their research and they know young black boys are the most vulnerable, hence why they've been going after them. It's just sickening, to be honest.
Alarmingly true. But what exactly can be done to curb this trend?

Krucifax: We should all stop trying to deny what the reality of the situation is. Yesterday some Nairalanders were putting op posts denying that they are Nigerians etc.

We have just found out that these two are yoruba men born in Nigeria and then emigrated to the U.K! My point is,they are very much Nigerians and we as a nation need to look in the mirror and ask ourselves some very hard questions. Why do we seem to breed some of the worlds most vile characters? Why do we consistently seem to be known for more bad things than good ones. The moral fiber of many Nigerians is very questionable and if you deny it,you are only deceiving yourself as the rest of the world seem to have made their minds up about us.
get your facts right. One of them was born in Nigeria and the other was born in Britain.

The second cretin had to bare my name, didn't he?I'm starting to really worry about the fickle-minded youths who revert to Islam. This is entirely about Islam, has nothing to do with nationality. The UK really need to put their house in order. Take this for instance: Abdulmutallab went to UCL and was the leader of some muslim organization there. He is the fourth president of a London student Islamic
society to face terrorist charges in three years.

You and all those supporting your pointless arguments remind me of the proverbial Ostrich with it's head in the sand.
those bringing up Abdulmutallab should check out his history. The guy was a nutter from Nigeria but UK took that to new heights. Its the Muslim population in London that seems to be a problem.

justwise: That is completely statement of fact, Agbolahon grew up, developed his footballing skills in the UK, paid by the UK tax payers so its only fair they want him to play for the UK. Any country will do the same. How come Nigerian govt is not investing in her citizens as the UK do but we only jump up to claim his origin when he becomes somebody?
you contradict yourself, my man. If they can claim Agbolahon because he grew up there, why not Adeboloja?

justwise: Yes they will, Omar Farah's history was traced when he won gold at the Olympic, his twin brother were traced to Somalia and interviewed, a lot was written about his journey from Somalia to the UK.
when the Agbolahon issue started, what did they say? They said although he was born in Nigeria, he developed as a footballer in Britain, hence, must play for Britain. The same is happening with Zaha and Sterling.
