Please, which bank is the best to us for online payment. I want to pay for some stuffs through my account but don't know the bank to use. I'm paying in US dollars and Canadian dollars. Please, who knows the exchange rate of different banks in Nigeria? Thanks

Thanks @bosy. It's quite easy for others. Chemical Engineering is something else o. I pray this evil spirit in that department in Nigeria is not operating in canada as well o. Otherwise what will prevent them not to reply common mails. It's not easy o. God will help us. Thanks anyway.

hi house, this is my first comment since joining the thread. i am an avid reader and a silent observer. when i want to unwind, i just log on to NL and get informed the more.

I got admitted to U of M and UBC for LL.M with full funding, Research based.
Admission March 30th
I have a baby and do not intend leaving her behind.
we did online and May 28th, we were denied.
Insufficient funds; my daughter (naturally), purpose of visit

Of course, I re fired and June 12th, I did biometrics,
online application again.
i'm expectant oooooo. cos my research supervisor sits on the Chair of the school of Graduates Studies and the exchange between us ehn, as been awesome.(im settling for U of M) cos it is 1 yr while UBC is two years.

If i don't chop TRV, na im be say God no want am. cos my sponsor's account opening balance na 42m, closing 18m, i run a partnership law ofice in Lagos Metropolis with some senior friends, my own account closing balance is 2.2m the funding from sch, ( i had three of them) is $28k and there are still some to be grabbed when there.

Confession time, the reasons for typing now is to answer the questions of those seeking for research supervisors.

My humble opinion is this, i checked my faculty, went through their top ogas, wrote down the courses that appealed to me, then i sent mails to them.
I didnt have a closed mind as per the specific area, i made my choices flexible.

PS; maybe going through the faculty would help widen your choice of course as well as supervisors.
All the best to us all.

We will all share our testimonies, Canada good ooooo grin

Yes. I called the HOD and told him my area of expertise and he suggested 3 professors. I only contacted one who agreed to supervise me. But I don't think that is the prerequisite to getting admission.

Brother, I echo for you. How preps for your travel this fall, I hope arrangements are going on well. Please, from my understanding of your message you called the Hod first and did not send messages to him and he suggested 3 professor's for you n you contacted only 1 who agreed to supervise you. Please, how did you contact the supervisor is it through mails or you called him as well. As for prerequisite, the graduate assistant told me specifically that I met all the requirements but if I can't get a supervisor to pick up my file then it will lie there until a supervisor indicates interest. Please, what means did you take in contacting your supervisor (call or mail). I think chemical engineering seems to do alot of shakara even the graduate students of my supervisor I contacted none has replied his or her mails. I tire o. God de sha.

Please who knows @saxywale should tell him that his input is needed in the house. Please call, tweet, watsapp anyhow just tell him to come in n help some peeps on Calgary issue cos there's no time again. @Solo8, do you mean i should add my LinkedIn account, twitter account for them to see.
Travel / Re: Travelling To Canada Part 8 by Team16(m): 10:09pm On Jul 06, 2015
Brother, I'll appreciate it, if you can do that. Please, help us inquire from them what they require. Am going for chemical engineering Ucalgary n Ualberta. Please do you know anyone in either of the schools that can give us or give me guidelines on how to go about it. I mailed some of them n got quick response from a few that they don't have space again n others are yet to reply if there's space or not. My Specialization is reservoir engineering or oil sands. Please, what do you mean by online presence, is it through LinkedIn.

[quote author=Solo8 post=35562644]

I'm not doing post grad so I've never had to look for a supervisor. I have several friends and mentors though that are doing research that I can use in the future if I decide to go that route. I've never asked them for tips on how they pick students because I've known them from yr 1 undergrad. If there are specific type of questions you want me to ask, pass it my way and I'll ask them for you. The only problem is that since you are not here, I can't vouch for you.

My advice is to have a visible presence online. So when you email them and they look you up, they'll know you are serious business and not like the hundreds of others that email them

guy no use dat one give your self hope, if a prof does not give u a reply within one week it means they are not interested in ur application, these professors receive a lot of emails so dey hardly have enough time to give replies to everybody besides if you read the departments website it is stated there that if you dont get a reply within a period of 2 weeks it means the prof is not interested in working with u then they advice you to mail another prof. if a prof has some spaces for grad students and he/she is interested in ur application they would give u a reply and inform u on how to proceed with ur application.

Ok, thanks for that. From your analysis, I guess I still have time to wait cos I mailed them last week, Wednesday and Friday respectively. So it's not up to a week. Thanks, I appreciate.

Mine was even assigned to me by my department. So I wonder what the problem is sef.

I think it's dependent on department and school. If they get high volumes of application, it might be difficult for them to decide. But which school and what department did you apply to. @solo8 please do you have any input on this supervisor issues.

I don't know why all these supervisors will read someone's email and not even reply angry

That is the most annoying part, I don't know if they receive them, they keep them and wait for others to come. When it's about time, they will now select the best amongst all cos am wondering why they don't reply. From my experience, the ones I've mailed. Few replied that they don't have space and others are yet to reply if there's space or not hence my guess. It's a guess not a fact. So i think if they've not replied is because they are still considering your application. I enquired from the graduate assistant n she said it ranges from 1 month to 1year. So i think if they've not replied it means it's still under consideration. The ones with quick responses might not have space. @all IMO

I am doing well. Thanks for checking up. No supervisor yet oh.
You are welcome. Na wa for Canadian schools n supervisor issues, God will help us. Please, what's your research interest and course, if it's chem/mat eng. And your research interest is oil sands related maybe you should try Dr. Zenghe Xu. He has a topic already, so maybe you try adjusting your research interest to his. I've not applied for admission yet, I want to secure a supervisor first b4 I'll do anything. I wasted alot of money in apps fee for USA schools last year, so am being cautious. Also, try sending to as many professors as possible, you don't know who might like your write up. I call it write up cos it's not your interest just that you want to please them with it, get a supervisor and get in. A kind of spraying your seeds in the farm, some may germinate and some may die but your prayer is for 1 to survive. Try it n it might work. My little contribution o. It can be ignored.

Just also wanted to chip in..... I personally would not travel without complete tuition (or a plan for continuous support from a sponsor here) for the duration of the program. You can hustle living expenses but not tuition. You don't want to be too distracted from your studies all in the name of hustling for tuition. I have schooled overseas before, and I know what Nigerians that did not have tuition were going through. And these were very close friends. Some even had to drop out when the going got tough. Some ended up failing masters and graduating with diplomas because they did not give themselves enough time to study. Studying overseas is not the same thing as studying in Nigeria. It's hardwork and dedication. But ultimately, we are responsible for the actions we take and the decisions we make. We r all looking for PR and to get it, you will need to blast your grades, get good work experience and prove to Canada that you are a great asset to them and worth living in and contributing positively to their Country. My brethren, think about it.... Would you employ someone (an international graduate) with bad grades? Let's be wise pls. Nigeria is bad but you can always beg for garri. Out there, it is not the same!!!!
Hello ma, how is going with you. Have you been able to get a supervisor? Just checking on you sha.

So that means he went with money then

He had his 1st year cost defrayed by his brother, hustled for the second year to pay up, he has payed his brother back n got himself a new ride. The guy hustling mind tight. I asked him how he's doing it but he refused to let me in yet that when I land, he'll put me through. His course is oil n gas related though. Sharp guy from medical physiology here in naija to one tight oil n gas course I can't remember the name of the course. I'll ask him n update you later.

Yes, I did say I won't advice any one to go without having their complete tuition for the duration of their studies, and I will kEep advicing anyone I know.
Its an advice, so its not compulsory for anyone to heed to it.
Its something I keep saying based on what I've read on this thread, and experience of the few people I know in canada nw, it is possible but very very stressful and hard.
Everyone is entitiled to their opinion and I'll just keep mute about this particular topic.

Madam T, I hail your dogged nature in fighting for your cause. I echo for you, but remember the life you are living is not an easy one. Going to Balogun market to buy things is not easy as well, life of a jobless graduate in Nigeria is not easy either. I read were someone said something about headache in Range Rover n in Keke (maruwa) which is better? The truth is life is not easy anywhere, the bible says the kingdom of God suffereth violence and the violent takes it by force, it did not say takes it easily, it still went on to say, he has not promised us a life of bliss and that temptations will come but with faith n trust in him we will overcome. (Pls pardon my bible examples, i recognise other religions. I mean no offense pls) What am trying to say is, yes it's not easy anywhere quote me even attending lectures in university was not easy either yet we still graduated with our 1st class n 2 ones amidst the strikes, poor lecture rooms, no laboratory etc d list is endless. I'll prefer to plant grass in canny than do fashola tree planting in naija here. IMO what we should be discussing is ways we can achieve it or surmount it n not saying it's not possible.
Someone suggested tree planting, hair cuts, nightclub hustle please we need more inputs so that those we wish to, but are discouraged cos of fund but was able to get admission n TRV can choose from the available choice presented by the house and begin to develop extra skills in direction. Skills in photography, tailoring, fashion illustration, beads, baking please we need more inputs and the provinces they are going to be beneficial to. Please @ everyone enough of the impossibility and let's see life from the positive side. What can such folks learn here b4 coming in order to help them meet up with their needs and still visit western union cos my guy believe you me that one is important. IMO. Don't kill me but correct me cos it's not only the dead that you can keep its head straight, you can do so to the leaving. #Faith works. Over n out.

But please I plead with the people advicing and encouraging pple to go without tuition, to add that's its very hard and tasking, so they don't think its easy.
The only problem I'm having hereis , encouraging pple to do something without letting them know how hard and challenging it is, its not fair to make pple think its easy to get a job and all.
When there are other bills to pay and rules to abide by.

I was just reading through and i saw....people arguing about the possibility of paying your fees and surviving without bringing enough money from Nigeria. Dearest brethren 90percent of Nigerians and Africans I have meet here are paying their fees themselves with no support from anywhere. I was so confused at first because the mentality I had from here was paying your fees or surviving without input from home(Tuition wise) all by yourself is next to impossible, well my experience here totally flawed all that. There is a way around it; as a matter of fact you wont have to get yourself involved in any form of illegality provided you can work hard....well you wont even need to be told by the time you see all your room mates taking up 2 to 3 jobs closing from one job to resume for another, and having so much in their account to maintain and comfortably pay their tuition, you self go blend quick quick. And as regards the 20 hours per week for international student.....(there is a way around this too) I dont want to share how when you enter you go understand. Its nothing illegal, all i can say about that is where there is a will there is a way.... I am not encouraging anyone to go against the law because rules are rules and they are meant to be obeyed and i will never go against any myself but the funniest thing is even if you go against the minimum hours rules here and you have reasonable explanations, you wont be bounced "reasonable explanations" I have meet uncountable numbers of international students majorly Africans that came to Canada with just few months house rent and they are doing very fine. You may be thinking it could affect their them from concentrating.....you see life is so flexible here.....very very flexible. To cut the long story short, it is very very very very possible infact over possible.

Brother, God bless you for this input. I have read all the arguement and was reluctant to contribute but I think I'll do that now. Please all concerned housemates, Do not Do not, Do not discourage anybody in whatever he/she has set out to achieve in life. We should be careful with the kind of advice we dish out here cos believe you me, you don't know who's reading silently n the impact your advice is having on them. If certain questions are thrown to the house for example the present discussed issue, IMO refer the person to his faith n belief, like it's been said if it's in your heart, pray about it, believe n it will come to your hands. Now back to the matter, some of my men that left this country 2yrs back with few months rent n 1 term tuition are bubbling in canny now doing very okay, the other one just finished paying up the loan he took from his brother who sponsored him to maple land n has bought his car. If he has listened to this kind of conversation n probably his morale was doused by what people had said, he would still be in this scotch sun of Nigeria regretting his ass n complaining, but i loved his spirit he said to me guy am processing my visa to canada n amongst all our friends you are the only one am confiding in, so keep it to yourself i dont need your advice and i dont want anyone to discourage me, this is my dream n I must achieve it. My guy's in d house if after suffering in this country (to those who has suffered o am not referring to those who had diamond spoon in their mouth when they are born) and you find yourself in canada n you are complaining that it's hard n it's impossible, nwanne am still looking for that word in the dictionary to qualify you o (no offense) but get my point n advice, if you are sleeping on a 100 inches Vita or mouka foam in naija, please the day your plane touches down on that land, the first thing to buy is UTE (MAT) cos sleep has gone. Guys are making it over there, paying their bills, does western union bimonthly and you are here telling me it's not possible. Nnaa nwanne enter ekenedilichukwu or young come house cos that thing from village. If you are igbo n you get to maple land n you are making or supporting this issue bros please go n sell your foam get mat cos it's not sleeping time, it's called hustling time. Remember western union, guys are not playing with it across the bridge na sure thing, men ga agba beer nu (men will drink beer 4 ur head now). My own input. My tinklee advice. It's not compulsory you adhere to it. Like i will always say n like I said when my moniker was attacked when i joined. Whatever it is you want in life, let it be done to you according to your faith. Faith works, if you believe it then you can achieve it.

I'm going for Msc Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering. I'm actually a Mechanical Engineer working in the oil and gas industry here in Nigeria. UofC required me to get a sponsor before they offered me admission even though I had enough cash to sponsor a family for 2 years. I tried showing them my account statement but they never cared to listen. So I got a friend who had a company to sponsor me with his company's letter head. Then the admission came!

Thanks Edoblakky. From my understanding, you got a supervisor first b4 the admission?

No you do not need TOEFL if u schooled in the UK. I have an MSc from the UK and English test was waived for me. No I have no supervisor yet. Still searching. But my application has been approved. I will strongly advise you try and secure a supervisor before applying. Don't mind their rule of applying and getting approved first so you don't end up like me. I fell into that trap and it is so difficult getting out of it.
Thanks for the info. About the supervisor am on it now, i am waiting for the admission to come b4 I start. But my little advice, try contacting the current students of your intended supervisor and explain your situation to them and see the advice they would give. It could have worked wonders for you now if you had been in contact with them. My intended supervisor at Ucalgary, I exchange mails with his current students, am following the man on LinkedIn, yet I've not contacted the man yet cos am putting some finishing touches in my applications with the info I got from his students. So get to work, contact the students n explain the urgency. N/B
contact as many of his students as possible cos you know some will not reply your mail cos of personal reasons, don't be discouraged. Keep firing don't quit yet. Check your apps, to see what you are not doing well, repackage n refire. Fire to all supervisor's that meets your interest and forget the notion that they discuss application request with fellow colleagues. They get tons of apps all over the world, so no time to discuss each, my own take though (don't quote me). But make your apps stand out. Wishing you all the best. God's grace to you.
