I concur with you on the documentary
Thanks. I believe it is important, because there is quite a bit of misconception about this great man - SLA. A large number of young people born in Western Nigeria after 1970, really have very little info on him. Many have been fed with stories from their parents about what SLA did or didn't do and the factors that led to his rift with Chief Obafemi Awolowo. shocked

The old generation within the pro-Awolowo group still like to hold SLA and his ideals in contempt, while the pro-Akintola group see the pro-Awolowo people, as inflexible, unprogressive and bitter. It is sad. Both men were great in their own separate ways, yet SLA's role has been largely misunderstood by the majority of the public.

It would be interesting to trace the history of both men, chart their political ideals and see where the divergence began and address the misconceptions that have defied time and history, which their supporters still cling to tightly. sad

Nigerian history has not given SLA the respect and recognition he deserves, neither have his associates been properly recognised for their actions which changed the face of Western Nigeria in the sixties. undecided

By the time Shagari's regime was toppled, the economy was in such a bad state that Nigeria had to resort to counter trade in order to be able to service its offshore obligations and import products, for its citizenry. Great news! If there is any area that needs to be overhauled, it is the health sector. Thank God for at least one high-quality tertiary hospital in our country that seems to be able to offer succour and appropriate treatment to the sick.

The management of the hospital needs to find a way to publicise their location, their services, facilities, fees, and the calibre of expert personnel available in their premises, to treat different kinds of ailments. cheesy

This would allow patients and doctors in other hospitals in different states to make patient referrals to the appropriate consultants there. undecided

… A daughter remembers an accomplished and beloved father
Maria Abimbola Akintola

Growing up I came to behold my daddy Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola as a colossus. In my infant eyes he was full of life, very effervescent and I had, in my child like innocence, thought that he will be around forever. My father was my personal hero and my world, to an extent, revolved around him. I grew up knowing him as a wonderful father, teacher, counselor and friend who helped everyone around him to be a better person.

Akintola the man that I know was sagacious, personable, erudite, urbane, suave, industrious, energetic and intelligent. He was a great organizer, talented mobilizer, an outstanding orator and a man of the people in the truest sense of the word. These attributes made him a very successful politician.

As a politician he had friends and foes in legion but his main pre-occupation was a united Nigeria in which every tribe especially his beloved Yoruba race will partake in the common patrimony as equals.
Fifty years after his passage, I still reminiscence of a father with a heart of gold, one who could hardly hurt a fly and who refused to pay his opponent in their own coin even when political exigencies demanded just that. Often times, I marvel at the concerted demonization of his memory for political pottage. At such times I am reminded of the old story as recounted by the Nigerian nationalist and prolific author Mokwugo Okoye of the great Athenian general and statesman, Aristides, hero of the Marathon War, noted for his valour, incorruptibility and magnanimity and nicknamed The Just.

When out of his rival, the venal Themistocles’ machination, he was banished from his country by the ostracism that was the bane of Ancient Greece, Aristides met an illiterate citizen who, not knowing his identity, wanted him to inscribe “Aristides” on the shell which he wanted to vote for the general’s banishment. The latter asked him “Whether Aristides had ever injured him?” The dutiful burgher replied in the negative, adding “nor do I even know him, but it vexes me to hear him everywhere called the Just.” The great man, we are assured by Plutarch in his Lives of Greek Heroes, said nothing but inscribed his own name on the “ballot paper” as he was directed and later suffered his banishment, praying as he left Athens “that the people of Athens might never see the day which should force them to remember Aristides.”

But his prayer was signally unanswered and three years later Xerxes of Persia, terror of the Greek world, was at the gates of Athens with his grand armada, which obliged the frightened citizens of the city of culture to revoke their decrees of vengeance: all the exiles were recalled, and subsequently Aristides, now reconciled with Themistocles, distinguished himself at the Battles of Salamis and Platea. Unlike Aristides my father did not have a second chance as he was brutally murdered by a band of misguided and mutinous soldiers on January 15, 1966. Like Aristides’ illiterate voter, many of the writers, politicians, carpetbaggers and renegades who calumniate the memory of my father could not claim to have been offended by my father or even to have known him closely; yet when it became expedient and their Themistocles sounded the battle cry and accused him of all sorts of crimes, they sheepishly cast their votes with scurrilous castigation and venomous damnation of his memory and his place in history.

Thank goodness history is hardly partial and there still abound in Nigeria men of goodwill and good conscience. I am re-assured by the resurgence of unbiased record, review and analysis of my father’s place in history even as I remain amused by the apparent consternation of some dye in wool partisans who still cling to distorted facts. Lord Acton, a celebrated British historian while quoting an Italian counterpart noted that “the gods have placed upon the earth two judges of human actions; conscience and history”. While people are left to live with their conscience, the verdict of history remains forthright and palpable. The facts of history are clear. My father was a prominent lawyer in his time. He was an accomplished teacher, frontline journalist, first Nigeria Minister of Labour, Minister of Health, Minister of Communications, first leader of opposition in the Federal House of Representatives, 13th Are Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, brilliant parliamentarian, astute administrator, nationalist, Patriot, Statesman and Visionary.

National treasures like the National Stadium in Lagos, Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Ikeja industrial estate, Surulere Housing estate etc. bespeak the deft touches of his administrative acumen and his ingenuity as a parliamentarian. Historians are settled on his preeminent role in the fight for the nation’s independence and his prodigious contribution to post independent Nigeria. No amount of later day red herring will obliterate the facts.
As ebullient as they come, my father was soft at heart.

A good family man, he dotted on the love of his life and only wife; my dearly beloved mother Chief Mrs. Faderera Abeke Akintola (of blessed memory) with whom he bore five children. He loved his children equally and for different reasons largely based on unique attributes specific to each child. The last of his children Olatokunbo till his death in 1973 was “the soul of the family” and had earlier achieved fame as the first African to attend the highly regarded British public school Eton College. A large-hearted man he extended unaccustomed benevolence to his family, friends and associates as well as charity and goodwill to all men.

Most times when I think of my father, I often ruminate on the import of the inspiring admonition of Rudyard Kipling in the inimitable poem IF. “If you can keep head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you; If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or, being lied about, don’t deal in lies, Or, being hated, don’t give way to hating,

And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise; If you can dream – and not make dreams your master; If you can think – and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with triumph and disaster And treat those two imposters just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

Or watch the things you gave your life to broken, And stoop and build ‘em up with worn out tools; If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your hearth and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you.

Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on,” If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with kings – nor lose the common touch; If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you; If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run--- Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it, And – which is more - you’ll be a Man my son!”
The poem could have been more than enough consolation only if my father was alive to share it with not just me but with all his loved ones today January 15, 2016. But since he is no longer around to share in the witty cadence of the ennobling verses so meticulously weaved together by Kipling, I shall continue to read alone and reminiscence on the time we shared together; precious time, now distant in memory, yet ever-green.

Thank you, o jare! Alabukun is 5 times more effective than panadol. Quote me anywhere. The only thing is that you must not take it on an empty stomach. It is actually sour, not bitter. And it has worked efficiently and effectively for me and my family for over 20 years. My grandmum, introduced it to the family and since then we have been using it. Its' efficacy is not in doubt! cool

I take it everywhere with me even when I am travelling abroad. On one of my foreign trips, I discovered the nearest pharmacy was several miles from my hotel. Thank God for Alabukun. I ended up not needing their services.

Honestly, Pa Odulate's life story and business skills, should be used as a case study in our universities. Till date, the supply chain mechanism used to distribute Alabukun never ceases to amaze me. You can find it in every part of Nigeria, in every Mallam's shed, and every chemist's shop. This is actually giving me some ideas...hmmn ...maybe, I should do a documentary on him! wink

Lol. What are their 'British manners'?
Their 'British' manners? Serving very 'stingy' miserly portions of cheap food, snotty air-hostesses that take forever to attend to your simple requests (despite the fact that you paid in full for the trip , o!) and little baggage allowance.

I once flew BA Lagos-London flight. Immediately we boarded, I developed a headache. I asked for panadol / painkillers from an air-hostess, as soon as we were mid-air. She initially ignored my request. I called the attention of another one, who promised to get me the pain killers. Despite several promptings, none of them provided me with panadol until about 30 minutes before touchdown. In fact, they started looking at me as if I was a pest! By the time we disembarked, the headache had become something else. sad

That was how I boycotted BA till date. I would rather fly any other airline but BA. Anyone who dashes me an airline ticket should not be surprised if I reject it, once it is BA. My hard-earned money will never enter their pocket again! angry I would rather fly Qatar Airlines or Etihad, than look in their direction.

Qatar Air has good service by the way... undecided

I think some respondents have given you an idea on the safest, well-structured estates to look at. i have lived on the island for over 22 years and I think the following estates appear to be well laid-out and safe.

Carlton Gate Estate off Chevron Drive, Lekki (lots of greenery, secured entry, stable power, well-laid out plots etc);

Pinnock Estate, Lekki (well-structured and secure);

Parkview Estate, Ikoyi (secure, but you would have to make your own arrangements for power generation etc);

There are also various high-rise buildings in Ikoyi, Victoria Island and Lekki, whose owners are selling off the individual flats within the blocks. Security and power have been fully provided. You will see some of these in 1004 Estates in Victoria Island, as well as Safecourt Estate in Ikate, Lekki, very close to Spar Shopping Mall. Graces' Court in Parkview Estate, Ikoyi as well as Adejoke's Court in Ikoyi were built by Gibraltar Construction. These are fine examples of great structures that have all the conveniences you can think of.

You could also look at Lekki Horizon Estate, owned by Lekki Gardens at the 4th Roundabout in Lekki. Richmond Gate Estate has a better layout and great security. It is also in the same axis and is worth a look. Hope this info helps. Good luck.

PoliticsRe: Facts About The Yoruba Enclave In The Heart Of Aniocha In Delta State - by Tequilah: 6:04pm On Jan 05, 2016
Here is another article that talks about the Olukumi communities in Delta State, and tries to relate it to the Igbo - Yoruba interaction over the past few centuries.

Author: Dr. N. Tony Nwaezeigwe - It is on record that both the Igbo and Yoruba cannot write a complete history of their respective roles in the development of the Nigerian nation without mentioning the other in one positive sense or the other.

Apart from the fact that both the Igbo and Yoruba were equal stake-holders in the nation’s Independence struggles, their contacts long pre-dated the arrival of the British colonial adventurers. The Yoruba were the first to establish effective direct contacts with traditional Igbo society long before European incursions. They had penetrated the Igboland before the Igbo themselves thought of coming to Yorubaland.

The evidence to this pre-colonial contact is today found in the existence in Igboland of a group of ancient Yoruba-speaking Igbo sub-group called Olukunmi made up of Ugbodu, Ukwunzu, Ubulubu and Idumuogo towns in Aniocha Local Government Area of Delta State.

Although these people could pass as normal Igbo in their general definition of ethnic identity when outside their communities, but they still maintain their Yoruba identity, speaking Yoruba language as their primary mother-tongue alongside Igbo and bearing mixed Igbo-Yoruba names. Most of these people claim to have migrated from Owo in the present Ondo State many centuries ago.

Similarly many Yoruba, mainly of Oshogbo and Ogbomosho origins, Nupe and Igala settlers today constitute a substantial portion of Asaba and Onitsha indigenes. These people had settled among the Igbo long before the coming of the Europeans accessing their present abode through the River Niger.

Above all, one cannot deny the positive roles such Yoruba missionaries as Bishops Samuel Ajayi Crowther and James Johnson played in the evangelization of Igboland during the nineteenth century.... http://247ureports.com/femi-fani-kayode-haunted-by-a-nupe-ancestry-fighting-a-foggy-yoruba-identity-complex-dr-n-tony-nwaezeigwe/
PoliticsRe: Facts About The Yoruba Enclave In The Heart Of Aniocha In Delta State - by Tequilah: 5:47pm On Jan 05, 2016
For those who still need the source of the story....here it is:

Delta State of the federal republic of Nigeria is made up of 25 Local Government Areas (LGAS) and like every other state, it is represented in the Nigerian senate by three senators; Delta Central, Delta South and Delta North.

Delta Central comprises eight LGAS and is inhabited by the Urhobos while Delta South also comprises eight LGAS and is home to the ethnic Ijaw, Isoko and Itsekiri while Delta North is home to the Ika, Enuani, Ukwuani sub-groups who are spread across nine LGAS.

The principal towns of Delta North are Agbor, Asaba (the Delta State capital) Ogwashi-Uku, Issele-Ukiu, Ibusa, Ubulu-Uku, Obiaruku, Kwale, Ashaka, among others. Its peoples are predominantly farmers, fisherfolk, businessmen, academic, bureaucrats and members of the defense and security forces. It is on record that at the dawn of Nigerian Independence on 1st October 1960, nine (9) of the fifty-eight (58) Indigenous commissioned officers of the Nigerian Army were from Delta North alone.....

As of April 2010, the Chief of Defence Staff of the Nigerian Armed forces and the Comptroller General of the Nigerian Immigration Service both hail from Amiodia North LGA of the said Delta North...

Today, the predominant speaking language in the area is a hybricized dialect of Ibo but the people somehow do not refer to themselves as Igbo for the simple fact that over eighty –five percent (85%) of Anioma people are said to have emigrated from Bini empire during the 14th and 15th century reigns of Obas (Kings) Ozolua, Ewuare and Esigie of the Benin empire which lies immediately to the west of Aniomaland. The festivals language, kinship systems of the people of Delta North appear to bear testimony to this fact even to this day. Possibly they may have lost their mastery of Edo Language on account of loud separation from the Benin Empire and became subsumed in the dominant Igbo culture as a result of the fact of greater proximity to Igboland.

Delta North also, has albeit unbelievably, an indigenous and living community of Yoruba and Igala speakers.

Aniocha North Local Government Area is the smallest, most northerly and most rural in the Delta state. It consists of 16 communities grouped into the three clans of Ezechima Odiani and Idumuje.

Odiani clan comprises 8 communities which are said to have historically emigrated from the Akoko area of Yoruba during the wars which raged in that part of precolonial African, during the 18th century when they arrived at their present day Delta State, the Yoruba Edo (Benin) émigrés and Ibos from the east of the Niger river had been on ground for a minimum of three centuries. Unable to communicate with the hostile people all around them, they courtesied all had Sunder who they came into contact with “Olukumi” a word in the Akoko of Yorba language which means “my friend”.

To this day, the variant of Yoruba Language spoken by my people is called Olukumi by neighbouring communities further east at Ebu, a migrant community of Igala who came from central Nigeria in search of prime fishing grounds had developed and to this day, the people of Ebu still speak Igala Language.

Deep in the heart of the Igbo Speaking people in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State are Ugbodu and three other communities where Olukumi, a derivative of Yoruba language is the language of the people. Read the rest here:
