Education › Re: ASUU: Be Ready For Financial Autonomy If You Want University Autonomy by texazzpete(m): 9:37am On Aug 28, 2017 |
While the article does make some good points, it's worth noting that University Autonomy isn't exactly the highest on ASUU's list of demands. Funding is.
IMHO, Nigerian Universities are criminally underfunded. Lecturers are severely underpaid and their welfare is not given the priority it deserves. Part of the blame must rest on the shoulders of Nigerian students who see this rot first hand, yet keep quiet and expect their lecturers to toil in silence. You see the dilapidated infrastructure, the rotting laboratories etc and say nothing. Unfortunately, it seems the main contribution of most Nigerian students to this dilemma is to lambast ASUU anytime they go on strike.
Financial autonomy is not the solution. Unless, of course, people are ready to see school fees rise to nearly the level of the Private universities.
Perhaps this may be for the best. Perhaps Nigerian parents and students would be more invested in making sure our universities work when fees of around 400k per year are levied. |
Education › Re: ASUU: Be Ready For Financial Autonomy If You Want University Autonomy by texazzpete(m): 9:19am On Aug 28, 2017 |
hedonistic: Nigerian lecturers have always been an arrogant bunch with a misplaced and grossly exaggerated sense of entitlement and delusion of self-importance.
I encounter them often, prancing about with a chip on their shoulders, expecting everyone to bow before them because they are "Dr" this or "professor" that, and expecting to earn mammoth salaries for the reason that they are "intellectuals". They are quick to remind you that "ordinary" local government councilors earn xyz, while undeserving National Assembly members earn xxyyzz, so that should justifiably earn multiples of that.
Seriously, these characters need to be put in their place. Most of them are incompetent hacks anyway, with much of their research papers highly plagiarised or full of inconsequential gibberish, while their impact on their students is close to zero - rehashing outdated theories and spending much of their time in class massaging their own egos rather than imparting any knowledge on their hapless students. So why don't you take up an appointment as a lecturer so you can 'show them how it's done'? |

This is the most senseless statement from ASSUU so far.
I also read an article this week where Adame (the education minister) lamented that Covenant University is now ranking better than Federal schools on Webometrics, and I wonder if he is just the minister of education for public institutions only.
We really need to change our mentality in this country because however we view it, private institutions are a plus to the educational sectors and not a minus. And any impact they make as a result of growing to match world standard will be credited to Nigerian educational sector. Hence, government at all levels must rise up and support private higher institutions just like they do for their federal and state counterparts. How can you quote something and fail to read it? |

Politics › Re: What Do Buhari, Dos Santos And Mugabe Have In Common? - BBC by texazzpete(m): 12:30pm On Aug 14, 2017 |
While I agree the leaders bear the lions share of the blame, the average Nigerians joins hands in treating medical doctors with disdain. For example, You see that the Lagos state Govt employs barely 2000 doctors for a population of 15+ million, yet you join in criticizing and abusing overworked, underpaid and unappreciated doctors anytime they come out to protest for improved welfare packages.
Health care improvement in Nigeria transcends improved infrastructure. It also involves making sure we remain an attractive place for experienced, skilled doctors to work. If not, brain drain will continue to happen. |

Health › Re: Nnamdi Obasi Is Dead! Son Of IMSU VC Dies After Surgery In Owerri Hospital by texazzpete(m): 12:23pm On Aug 14, 2017 |
Sad story, but why would someone with appendicitis not go for immediate treatment?
An appendectomy is a routine operation. Risk of complication is very minimal if a competent doctor is in charge. And this operation is well within the capability of even relatively inexperienced Nigerian doctors.
the post in the OP seems to indicate he held off on treatment until it was - perhaps - too late. |

Education › Re: ASUU Strike Looms Over Controversial 2009 Agreement by texazzpete(m): 9:51am On Aug 11, 2017 |
OAUTemitayo: Honestly I have never seen a useless group as ASUU. They are the one managing the Universities and the massive corruption going in our citadels of learning is heart breaking. OAU collects 18,000 as development fees every year from freshmen and there is not a single project initiated by the school management. All new projects are either by Education Trust Fund or PTF. I am really tired of ASUU. They will be shouting poor infrastructure before going on strike and when they want to call off the strike, it is salary increment agreement you will be seeing. Quick correction. ASUU isn't in charge of running the universities. The VC, registrar, bursar etc aren't ASUU members. However I do expect ASUU to monitor what the universities are doing with the share they've received thus far. General impression is that the money provided so far is making minimal impression. |

ShyCypher: Air to ground? Where?
Do you think you can just whip up intimidatin' pictures to fool us? You could just google up, you know. According to Wikipedia, virtually all export models of the F7 (our main fighter jet) have been used for air-to-ground operations. Standard load out includes a rocket pod for firing air to ground rockets...And the F7 can carry and drop unguided bombs. I reiterate again that the F7 is primarily designated as a 'fighter jet'. Take correction and do more research. |
