Another week of protests. Another week of frustration for the common man. Many of us that are not in Lagos might not understand. People were placed in a position where they had to spend additional 4-5 hours in traffic piled up upon the previously existing ungodly Lagos traffic.


“These guys really get time o.”
I thought to myself condescendingly when I saw many of the people protesting.
“They are obviously jobless.”


A co-worker of mine mentioned and I agree. Only a jobless person would leave his source of daily bread to come and be engaging in these wanton acts of public disturbance and tomfoolery. Constituting a public nuisance to the common salaryman who cannot relate to their struggle, but is just trying to make a living to feed and support his family. Or the petty trader carrying her perishable tomatoes from Ijebu ode to Obalenede, to make her almost negligible gain of 3000 nairas so her sons 8 and 5 years old, that have an absentee father can have a chance in this cold, unforgiving world.
I am not a SARS apologist. But I would never partake or support these protests. This continuous blocking of roads and especially the toll gate here in Lagos is not affecting the key stakeholders who are to be held responsible. The key policy and decision-makers, who through a series of outrageously terrible lawmaking, have brought us to this very point. Every political office holder, appointed or elected, who has stood by and partook in the unhindered looting and pillaging of this country’s resources, natural and human alike are not feeling the pains. Me and you. Your fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters, uncles and aunts are the ones experiencing the growing pains from this pseudo-revolution (yes, I said pseudo, Nigerians have a bad rep when it comes to seeing things to the end. Eventually, they are going to sell out, just like other movements and protests before them. I hope they make a fool of me and push on to the end). But that statement my co-worker uttered really put things into perspective.

But 6 in every 10 young boy/girl is a direct or indirect beneficiary of “yahoo money”. If you know, you know. We cannot come and be deceiving ourselves. With this rise in the number of young people engaged in online fraud, an equal, opposing force had to rise to help curtail their money laundering schemes and keep everything perfectly balanced, as they should be.

Maybe it’s an African thing. Or it’s a Nigerian thing. I am not well-traveled enough to make an educated guess on the subject, so I’ll be out of place to base my findings on assumptions rather than facts. But the evidence on the ground points to the glaring disregard for time in this nation. It seems the saying “time na money” is only applicable when needed to be framed and placed on the wall of an office. Applying such sentiment to our day-to-day lives is out of the question. We cannot seem to keep to time in anything we do. It is at a point we might need to apportion some blame for our abysmal timekeeping skills to the unseen forces holding this country captive. After all, what else could keep you from making an appointment for 2 pm regardless of who you are meeting and stick to that time? Must be the gods of our land who for some reason are holding a vendetta against all Nigerians, making sure we do not progress in any aspect of our lives.

I remember when I was invited for an interview in Lagos. I was in Abuja and in less than 48 hours I had to be in Lagos. To avoid stories that touch by risking making my journey on the day of the interview, I embarked on the journey the day before and I can categorically say everything that could go wrong went wrong. (well, I made it out alive, so not everything I guess). Left Abuja around 7 am and got to Lagos by 11:47 pm. At that point, there was no way I could have gotten home that day, so I passed the night in a motel. First thing in the morning, I checked out and boarded a bus heading to Tafa Balewa square. From there, I ordered an Uber (a brother needed to look relatively fresh for the interview) to Ikoyi where the meeting was to hold. An interview slated for noon, I got there 9:50 am. Now, I could have taken my time and said “you know what, let me just chill till 11 before going to the interview location”. But I decided against that for two major reasons.

Like, just tired and frustrated. I should warn you, there is no cohesive topic to be discussed in this piece. This is nothing more than a rant. Why are we like this in this country? I am not one who believes that one good turn deserves another. If you want to do good, do it because it is the right thing to do. Not because you expect something in return. But I believe in any position we find ourselves, we should always strive to do the right thing. It is very easy for us to sit in our different homes, on the bus on our way to work, in our offices, arguing about how the politicians have ruined this country and how they are mortgaging our future. But the fact of the matter remains that If we do not change our attitude and start acting like better human beings, treating people with respect, dignity, and love from the kindness of our hearts, we would get nowhere. It’s just so sad at times when you realize what we can achieve as a country if we stop thinking of what we can do for ourselves and what we can do for others. Like for once in your life, put the needs of others above yours. It won’t kill you to just do the right thing for once.

Some people reading this would already be like “oga calm down. What did they do to you that has not being done before”? And this kind of thinking is one of the contributing factors to the malaise affecting this country. When we feel like “well. E don dey happen” or the most annoying one “na normal”. What do you mean by “na normal”? Are you people normal like this? Stealing from your organization and robbing your employer na normal? Office hours where you are being paid on the clock. You are using it for personal business and you are saying na normal? Seeing your neighbor’s kids engaging in unhealthy activities and instead of doing something, you turn a blind eye with the “e no concern me. Na my child?” philosophy. Don’t worry you hear? Karma is coming for all of you. I love what the present government is doing to us. Una never see anything. Since every man is thinking of always outsmarting and defrauding his neighbor at every turn, then we have no right to castigate those in power for giving us a taste of our own medicine.

Now, to the main issue that warranted this shedding of tears. I was picked up by an Uber on Saturday. Nice guy, or so I thought. We had a long convo on the travails of being an Uber driver in Lagos. The amount of insult and disrespect you have to face left, right, center? Even from those whose net salary is nothing compared to what you pull in in 2 weeks. But because we are a judgmental set of people who like to look down on individuals in the blue-collar industry, we would continue to deceive ourselves. Acting all high and mighty, thinking we are better off than the so-called drivers. Or is it those girls that go by that degrading (empowering for the feminists) Yoruba word that starts with o and ends with o? In short, he confessed to me that those girls are the ones keeping the industry moving. Once you can get a few of those ladies to have your number on speed dial, you don hammer be that. Anyway, before I digress further, it was a great ride and the insightful conversation with the man opened up my eyes to see the ride-hailing industry from a fresh perspective. Now, I am not alaroror. I understand how important ratings are in a gig economy. I’d rather not rate you at all if the ride was not pleasant than to give you a bad rating that would affect your chances of getting more riders. I also have a principle that if you tell me to rate you 5 stars, I am not doing that. That statement right there is another symptom of one of the numerous diseases plaguing the average Nigerian, which is our entitlement mentality. As in, I don’t understand. You offered a service; you are still telling me how well I should rate you for the service. Whether I like it, whether there were some things I felt you could improve on? All those are none of your business. Your own na just “oga before you comot, give me my 5 stars abeg”. Some would even hold you hostage, insisting that you give them a 5-star rating before you alight from their vehicle. On top of my money again? You then wonder “which kind market I don buy like this”......

I just finished from there. It is legit. Key thing to note is all that every information you need is in their email. Read and digest every information in their mail and you're good to go.It is a residential area. I believe the company is a new tech firm that just got funding from a VC so they are literally just setting up shop in Nigeria hence the somewhat lack of organization on their part.

They are letting people into the building/house/test centre. If you applied for any previous positions and you were invited for the assessment test and you did not come for the test. Don't bother coming. You won't be allowed to enter the building let alone write the test.

I'm at the location. Been here since 8 am. It is a residential area. No one has come to address us yet. We are all hanging around the street.

Alert! APC has taken the lead in Oye after collating the major polling units. So Ikere goes to PDP, Oye is looking more like APC. Two strongholds down, Ado, ISO, Ikole to go. Keep your fingers crossed as there are two things involved. The winner of this elections win by a slim margin or it might end up being inconclusive. This can swing anyway, don't let anyone fool you with bloated figure.

APC seems to be taking the lead here in Iye -ekiti. Hopefully, after the dust has settle things would change. But from the way things are going, PDP can kiss ilejemeje local government goodbye. Now like Nigeria during world cup, PDP has to start permutating and hoping results in other local government favour them. Though anyone with an inkling of politics Ekiti know that Ado, Ikere, Ikole, Oye and Ido are the hotspots. Win those places and you've won Ekiti.

Very tightly contest election. Iye ward 1 won by PDP. 46-40. Another word llefun ward 1 won by APC. As predicted,there is no way 16-0 is happening again. But I still hope that PDP win. Suffering get grade and from what we suffered under Fayemi's first tenure. I'll take PDP over and over again.
