mygladness:
Good day good people on this forum, please I need your counsel.
I desire to migrate to Canada with my family through the permanent residency program
I have done the initial assessment through a Canadian immigration agent who is now asking for $4000 to assist with the processing.
Please, is it possible to progress without an agent as I do not have such amount readily, given other commitments presently?
What other alternatives are available?
Is it true that chances of being picked for Permanent Residency is rather slim for applicant or spouse over 50 years of age?
Which count stronger, grades @ degree levels or years of experience?
Please what is the difference between the skilled-labour express entry immigration and the express entry Nova Scotia Program?
Any other information will be appreciated?

Thanks for your anticipated kind counsel.
It is possible to progress without an agent?
As with for all applications relating to immigration, you don't need an agent. In fact, some people have found themselves in deep trouble because they have used an agent. By doing your homework you will realize how easy immigrations related matters are. They are all designed to do it yourself.

Is it true that chances of being picked for Permanent Residency is rather slim for applicant or spouse over 50 years of age?
Not true given that age is only a slice of all a lot of other factors. Please visit this link and use the tool that will help you calculate your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score based on the answers you provide.

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/crs-tool.asp

Feel free to ask any question in this forum and we will assist you. Don't use an agent, instead USE NAIRALAND and you will have greater chance of succeeding.

Coming on NL with a new moniker to solicit for handouts does not require 'swallowing one's pride'. That is keeping one's pride while begging. And it is worrisome that many people now resort to this gimmick in order to make some quick cash. If they aren't accosting a celebrity on Social media, they're casting a wide net on a faceless forum with one sob story or another threatening suicide.

Our culture has institutionalized begging in every sector: from brown envelopes in public offices, to the police and airport personnel. And now this. When does necessity have the opportunity to become the mother of invention when all people do in their needful moment is ask for handouts? To pay rent, nonetheless. It is not as if he's worked out a sustainable plan that could even become a good investment opportunity.

MrBrownJay1 did not even condemn begging per se. He did advise the Op to approach his church, family, friends and neighbors. The Op isn't an island, cut off from the real world. Asking for charity from real people would even help him be more prudent and accountable to himself because his creditors would expect their charity to take effect. But here, if he discovers how easy it is to obtain charity on social media, with no one caring to see how he spends the handout, he could mismanage his resources and open a different moniker tomorrow and do it all over again. And eventually, he would get used to living like that because, frankly, who doesn't like free food?

A lot of us may be able to afford carrying someone like that along, donating fixed amounts for every tale that draws a tear from our eye. But is it ultimately fair to him to make him so dependent? It is not wickedness to question and even criticize his decision to come on NL to ask for handouts, it is rather a show of love and respect for human integrity. It would be wickedness to enable these unproductive ploys. In life, one often has to be cruel to be kind in order to keep people from digging themselves into holes. We should have a deeper sense of humanity than to fear our own astute judgement of this issue. You want to get points for caring? At least do it right.

If we genuinely want to help this op, encourage him to put a face to his plight. Let him table a bankable idea that can be supported by the NL group of friends. It will do him and society a lot of good.
Mon cher, tu es tres fort ... lol. (I wish there was a way to say that in English but I couldn't come up with any)

Giving you money WONT help you, it will just fool you into believing that what you are doing is RIGHT, when it is NOT.

You have NO income, therefore you can't Feed yourself and definitely shouldn't have a home... (When rent is paid then will you now beg for food?!?!)

I suggest you go back to the village (or wherever you came from) stay with a relative there, or some friends/acquaintances, and get back on your knees. BEGGING strangers is a failed way to try to succeed in life... It's cheap, it's a lazy state of mind, but most importantly, it's WRONG!

Someone in Canada on a study permits wants to travel outside of Canada for a holiday, what does he need to do to be able to come back into Canada? Does he need to apply for visa again? Or the study permit is enough document? Is the temporary resident visa multiple entry?

@salford1 @chimah3 and other senior bosses
From Canada Immigration website http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/study-extend.asp#student_travel

As a foreign student, can I return home or travel outside Canada during my studies?
Yes. However, a study permit isn’t a travel document. It doesn’t give you the right to travel to Canada. Along with your permit, you need either:

a temporary resident visa or
an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)
Having an eTA or a visa, along with your study permit, doesn’t guarantee that we will let you back into Canada. You must show the border services officer that you meet all the requirements before we will let you re-enter.

Yes, it's true that some landlords and buildings managers will ask for credit history and to see your Canadian job payslips before they will rent a unit to you. I encountered that problem as well but I simply moved on to the next address on my list until I found a building where they waived those requirements after they met I and my wife. The building manager saw that I and my wife were experienced professionals, people who could settle down quickly. It is all about how you carry yourself. We told her we have enough money to pay our rent and with our experience can find something reasonable to do and earn a living, she just said bring 3 months rent. We ended up giving only 2 months, first and last and that was it for our 1 year lease. If one door closes, another must open but you must keep moving to find the open doors. It was from that apartment I moved into my own house. God is good, He can do all things and He is in Canada.
I love that. Very inspirational.
Indeed, God lives in Canada.

If your Yahweh or Allah told you to kill an atheist, would you?
In the eyes of God there is no difference between an atheist and a believer. If I hear a voice asking me to kill someone, I would surely known that it is not the voice of God. God can't ask me to kill given that in his own word (the Bible) God says you shouldn't kill. How can he contradict himself? Only the devil can twist the word of God the way he did in the Garden of Eden. God said this and the devil came to Adam "Did God really said this?"

An Akudaya is a person who is dead but is still be sighted by people. In other words, he is a dead living.
Some people believe that the concept of Akudaya is a myth whereas some other strongly believe it is real?
Can anyone share an experience or encounter with an Akudaya. It doesn't have to be a personal experience.

Oh Ok. So people really do commit accident fraud? why is Montreal different from Quebec? It is also French speaking? or they are just not as paranoid as Quebec?
Montreal is the biggest city in Quebec and the second biggest city in Canada after Toronto.
Montreal is much more multicultural than the rest of Quebec.
You will find people from almost every corners of the planet in Montreal whereas the rest of Quebec is mostly White (French-Canadian)
There is a huge English Speaking community in MOntreal.
Some English speaking people in Montreal can't speak French at all.

Bear in mind that Quebec has a French language police for businesses.
If you run a business in Quebec and don't label any of your products in French, you will get in trouble with the province’s language police that will result in a fine.
Quebec’s Charter of the French Language requires that public signs, posters and commercial advertising be in French. If another language is used, French must be “markedly predominant.”

Good question...In Calgary, some people having been walking away from their mortgage payment and dropping off the keys at the bank. Their is a law in Alberta that does not allow the banks to go after their other assets. Not sure if the law is still in effect.
One time I asked one of my bankers how to find a foreclosed home, he had no idea neither.
His advise was to check with real estates companies.

No mention of RBC ,
Any new immigrant who walks into a RBC branch will automatically be given a credit card with at least $1000 regardless of job status and there is no credit check. The person has to be in Canada for less than 2 years.
RBC also have program to help new immigrant purchase their first home in Canada with no credit check.

I can't think of any jurisdiction in the world where one works there but isn't required to pay taxes. Moreover, you'll be using Ontario's infrastructure to and from work, so why wouldn't you have to pay the province of Ontario taxes ? Lastly people lie. Nobody really knows the case between that person you read about and the CRA (Canadian revenue agency). He must have had a nice lawyer or got tax credit through some sort of business. But if CRA caught him living in Quebec but working in Ontario, he's paying those taxes period. Well all have to deal with rent/mortgage, child care, etc but we're not breaking the law. If you've gotten your PR, remember any illegal activity can get you deported. Is it worth it just to save some money ? Lastly, despite what people think on here, the cost of living isn't really that much cheaper in Quebec.
You may have a good point. Things may seem cheaper in Quebec, but the question to ask is how are the salaries in Quebec compared to the rest of Canada? I have heard Quebec offers some of the lowest salaries in Canada.

Try not to get one of this. This cost me $200 plus tax and 3 points on my license for going 18km/hr over the limit on HW1 at Medicine Hat. Canada has wide roads, so there is always this temptation to drive fast...lol.
There are radar cameras everywhere. Its a good income generator for provinces. Sometimes, these fines triple depending on where you are caught.

I was lucky my drivers abstract history wasnt pulled up when my insurance was due for renewal. My premium would have gone up too if the abstract was pulled.

Most jobs that requires driving would set a maximum limit of 5 points on your license for employees, and its very easy to rack up multiple tickets. A work colleaugue racked up 6 points in one day...one for speeding, and the other for not coming to a complete stop at a stop sign.

There are many jobs outside city limits that can only be accessed if you have a car. Some smaller cities do not even have a public transit system, hence; you dont want your license withdrawn.

Another important thing to note is "do not drink and drive". We do this a lot in Nigeria. We get on the wheels after downing bottles of beer or wine at events or parties. Problem is how do you know when you are over the limit or the amount of alcohol in your system despite not feeling tipsy?

In Canada, dui is a criminal offence. If you have a dui, your PR would not be renewable and you are considered no longer inadmissible to Canada. It could cost up to $10,000 too by the time you are done with legal fees. If you have an American visa, you automatically become inadmissible to the US as well as DUI is a felony in the states. Lots of Nigerians(newer immigrants) are already victims of dui.
In addition to that, if you are involved in an accident in which someone die , you may be charged with murder if alcohol is found in your blood (breath) even if it the accident wasn't truly your fault. (I am not sure about the legal limit on this one)
In the eyes of the police, the dead person was killed by a drunk driver even though the accident was due to weather condition, mechanical failure etc ..

Okay, I say you will be charged with murder, but you may or may not be convicted. You have to convince the judge that the accident wasn't due because of the effect of alcohol.

But one is supposed to pay tax to the province they are resident in and not one they work in. I read of someone who lives in Quebec but works in Ottawa who was double taxed but got his Ontario tax refunded after he filed a complaint.

Again, other than rent/mortgage being significantly lower in Quebec, i read it also has the lowest childcare costs and car insurance. For a new immigrant, especially one with little children, any money saved would be gold.
In addition to that, car insurance is wayyyyy cheaper in Quebec.
A new immigrant may pay $300 to $400 per month in car insurance in Ontario. However, in Quebec, they would only pay $20 per month. That is a huge gap.

Congo made some recommendations. Personally I feel all the 5 major banks are all the same. They just rape you differently. I'm personally with TD, I find they have a branch everywhere in the country which is very accessible. They also open late and in odd hours which I love. You never know your work schedule. If/when you get a credit card, do not mess up your credit. You'll be sorry. Your credit score/history is your life line in this country. I am not joking.
Oh yes, I have learned it the hard way. We have to be extremely cautious with our credit rating. Even some employers, including the Canadian Army, check the credit score for their applicants.
