vcole: I'm also up for any good info as regards getting affordable furniture. I was/am hoping for a warehouse or auction kinda store with really good furniture cos the prices I can see online for new sofas and stuff are a bit pricey. @fusion23, I wouldn't buy a used mattress though, I don't think you should. Also, what would you recommend for a bank account? taking into consideration monthly fees, credit card annual fees and limits, etc etc. What bank would work best for a newcomer? cc: maternal, fusion23, shinarambo1, salford, dogice, et al
You can take advantage of the program offer to new immigrants by RBC bank. You will get a credit card and they can also help buy your first home or car in Canada. I know someone who benefited from this program 2 years ago.
Prettiepearlz: I know this thread is old but I have got to say this. Justwise, What about a friend who didn't tell me she travelled abroad, but I checked instagram and from the picture she posted her environment already changed because she was on the beach with some Korean babes and I happily liked the photo and commented that she is looking beautiful. The next thing I remembered my friend did was block me off her Instagram and made her page a private page after blocking me (as someone who didn't really know my way much around Instagram, I just noticed I tried searching for her and couldn't find her on my follower list or even in the search list, I then used my sister's instagram account and I searched for her and her details came out. I then realized she had blocked me off her Instagram page because I happily and innocently commented because I was happy to see my friend doing well (I am no advocate for staying in Naija,I also have my plan. Anyone who wants to stay and develop the country can develop it as for me I am tired of rejection and segregation we often experience in our own country) but she humiliated me by blocking me off like I was a nobody. She isn't just a friend, we have been friends since when we were young, and we are also family friends. What she did pained me that for days I cried. I cried not because she didn't tell me she was travelling, at least thats the trend in Africa, you don't tell people you are travelling so that they don't abort your travelling plans (African thinking) but I cried because I felt humiliated and rejected( well it was only for a while), because other people commented and she replied them, I took a quick peak at the profile of those who commented that she replied, I saw that they are also based abroad. Because I never pass border does not mean I won't pass border. And I vowed to stay in my lane at the same time wishing her well. Now if that my friend eventually tries to contact me and I show little or no concern or even try to ignore her, does it mean I am jealous of her? No! I am not because I was taught to always rejoice with those rejoicing, so that I can be blessed. But I doubt if I would ever want that friendship to continue again. I won't be friends with someone who doesn't respects me and thinks so little of me. I know If I post a picture of myself wearing a winter jacket in an environment filled with snow today, she would contact me because that way she feels I am already up to her level and by his grace I will testify soon. At the same time, I am not disregarding the fact that I also have nice friends abroad who treated me like human and tried to keep in touch too. And I understand them even when they don't keep in touch anymore because I know it's a busy world and everyone is trying to find his path to success. But in their silence, they care about me and I care about them. That's the way the term friendship should go.
OMG, very sad. We all have been through rejection one way or the other. The worst thing is when your loved ones reject you because you aren't doing good financially. But then again, no situation is permanent and the earth is spinning constantly. Those who were first at one point may find themselves been last. Conversely, the last ones may find themselves be the first ones. Therefore, never underestimate anyone because we don't know what tomorrow may bring about.
Just take it as a learning process and move on. One day, she may be embarrassed to look at you in the eyes. She may even pretend she never had an instagram account.
I remember when I was growing up in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a primary school friend of mine befriended some white people in the neighborhood. He started to mingle with white people in Secondary school. One day I met him on the streets and the guy pass me as if we never knew one another. He even put on a very serious face. I was hurt but there was no much I could do. I had to accept the fact that he was in a different world. I even started to thing that maybe he didn't remember me after all.
Then all of the sudden BAM, I was in the United States of America. This news became a sensation in the city where I grew up among all my peers. The next thing I knew the childhood friend ,who I thought didn't remember me, was looking for me. OMG, it means he never forget me all this time but preferred to ignore me because of the fact he had white friends.
You live and learn. And one thing I have learned is you never know who will help you and when.
I have come across this thought on Karma online:
"When a bird is alive, it eats ants. When the bird is dead, ants eat the bird. Time and circumstances can change at any time. Don't devalue or hurt anyone in life. You may be powerful today, but remember, time is more powerful than you. One tree makes a million match sticks but only one match is needed to burn a million trees. So be good and do good."
smartleo: Please I want to travel to the Bahamas, please anybody with valid information on how to go about getting the Visa?.The information is needed urgently.
Just wait for your answer on here and don't call anyone. Else, you will come back crying on Nairaland with another thread.
eji1979: Call me with this number let's discuss:09030197458, or you send message through whatsapp.
You are defeating the purpose of this forum by asking people to call you. The purpose of the forum is to share the info on here . Not that the information you provide would benefit other but also your information can be validated by the "experts". If everything on here have to be share through private channels then there is no need to be here.
Its harder to make an honest living abroad than in Nigeria because the chances of you living on stolen money and brag about it is remote but in Nigeria stealing is a full time job with a recognized position.
May be only few of you knew those opportunities available to ordinary Nigerian because people in the attached picture will disagree with you
This is a picture of job applicants in one state, the govt sold the form to them but many died trying to get the immigration job, this is the same Nigeria?
Justwise, is this truly a picture of job applicants or a football game?
maternal: Congo I think you're taking things to personally. Many people have attempted to educate her, but she'll only respond with insults, mocking, or belittling anything that isn't pro Nigeria. Can you imagine getting bullied or insulted because someone decides to leave Nigeria and find better opportunities abroad, which is their right ? Go and look at our previous interactions. You're being bias.
Yes people on welfare, their rents are subsidized based on income. What happens when someone makes 0 dollars ? People who are below the poverty line and have children at age x or younger, qualify for provincial dental care coverage and prescription drugs. I currently know individuals in this situation. In regard to post secondary education, I was talking about their children. In the province of Ontario if your household income is 50k or less, you're eligible for free tuition. I'm pretty sure people living in poverty don't make over 50k. Other provinces plan to follow. As for adults, if you're current in the news, in the new federal budget, those unemployed or on welfare will be able to attend a post secondary institution while getting a small salary. I don't know when it'll be enacted. Furthermore, even mature students who make 50k or less are also eligible for free tuition. Remember on top of being tuition-less, citizens/PR are eligible for certain grants (free money), one would still be getting their child benefits (if they have kids), and a potential size-able tax return at the end of the year. There are ways one can make it happen, though you'll be on a shoe string budget. Either way I'm just ranting. I guess pidgin girl is getting her education ? You can do the research about the dental care and prescription drugs yourself. If I post more links then you'll accuse me of being ignorant or cocky. You seem to be in your feelings today. I fail to see your objective today, but if you're going to point a finger at me, you better point the same finger at your friend.
Kudos to you on this post At least this is how an educated person should debate. No names calling, no bashing anyone. You just use arguments to prove a point.
salford: if someone is ignorantbof something, you can educate without using some strong words.
Thanks salford, that is what I have been trying to bring. There is no needs to humiliate someone just because the person has a different opinion on a topic. (You are an IDIOT, you are ignorant, you need to be educated ... )
maternal: If you want to debate, debate. Call me out. It's not that serious. Not taking nothing personal. Going through my posts (you have time) is taking things a bit personally don't you think ? We both know what pidgin is saying is ignorant. You live in Canada, so stop it. How can she be making such statements without ever living here ? She's calling people here parasites who benefit from hardworking citizens sweat to feed their children. That's not condescending ? That's not a ME attitude ? She also claims people who collect government support don't strive for a better means of income. Again that's not condescending ? My friend if you're going to call me out, call everyone out. I think you're the one taking this (or me) personally. I have a right to my 2 cents just as she does.
Me attitude means ONLY MY OPINION Counts or ONLY MY OPINIONS ARE FACTS. If anyone doesn't agree with me, he is either an IDIOT or should educate Himself. This is a very wrong attitude to be displayed by someone who called himself educated. You should handle debate on NAIRALAND the same way you would handle academic discussions. I don't know which school you went to, but in an academic discussion, you don't call someone an IDIOT or tell them they are IGNORANT and should educate themselves. You would get a zero mark and can even be suspended from school. Pigrin2 doesn't understand how Child Care Benefits work in Canada. You could educate her the way FelizO1 did without been condescending. You further told Pigrin2 that "I know you're use to having a child starve to death ...". How do you even know that Pigrin2 is used to see hungry children?
On a different note, you indicate that "With welfare they'd get free housing, medical, dental, prescription drugs and tuition when they're in University". That is untrue. I don't know where you get the concept of free housing from. People on welfare pay housing even though the amount is subsidized. In terms of medical care, what the Canadian government covers is just the basics that doesn't even include the dental care. Welfare recipients have to pay for the cost of dental care. Also, there is no such thing as welfare recipient getting free tuition in school. Someone can't be on welfare and be a full time student at the same time. In Ontario for example, anyone on Welfare who is attending university would be automatically removed from Welfare and would be asked to apply for OSAP.
maternal: Your ignorance is comical and appalling. You shouldn't make your opinions look like facts. Seriously, educate yourself before making such statements.
maternal is back again with his condescending ATTITUDE. It seems to me that you can't handle a debate without bashing people. Com'on man, this is just a discussion forum and no one is making a living out of it. Most of us are here to chill. No point of taking things personally. Here you are telling Pidgin2 not to make his opinion look like facts. However, going through your posts, this is what you have been doing yourself, taking your OWN opinion for facts. And when someone doesn't agree with you, he is either an IDIOT, IGNORANT or LACk EDUCATION. LOL, seriously bro, you are something else. This world doesn't revolve around you alone. And the world is way bigger than you. So, please stop your ME, ME, ME ATTITUDE. It is not always about you, it is about everyone. Have some respects for your fellow Nairanders.
Lily4star: Quarter baked news, there's no evidence implying the man is a pastor, try harder
Actually he is a well known Haitian pastor based in Florida, USA. You can watch this video made by some member of the Haitian Community discussing the topic. They are speaking Haitian Creole at the beginning of the video but from 3:00, they have switched to English.
Interesting title "white tourist". Does the ethnicity of the person makes any difference? Yeah I forget that this was Africa, given that this happens to a white man, this event becomes a sensation ... smh
A fake US embassy in Accra was issuing LEGITIMATE BUT FRAUDULENT visas for 10 years before been shut down in 2016. How could this be possible in this century?

lionlee216: A nigger or nigga from the mouth of a white man to a black is a racism word
The word nigger is still a racial slur even even when it goes from one black man to another. In Canada, under the Human Right code, if a black man refers to another black man as a nigger in a working environment, the employer could be liable and could end up paying monetary compensation to the claimant.
However, under the criminal code, no one could ever be arrested or charged for using that terminology whether the person is black or white. There is no crime committed when someone uses that word.
Originalsly: As an idividual... it's a hate crime... same goes to calling someone a gay. Happens all the time.
I challenge you that there never been any case where a person got arrested for the mere fact of calling someone a nigger or gay. This would go against the freedom of speech.
A hate crime would be a combination of a crime (assault, theft …) and racial epithet. Using racial epithet alone could never lead to an arrest. You may ask a police officer.
automatic1: How can I travel to Haiti. Do I need visa, direct flight cost if any? Hotel cost, duration for stay and becoming Haiti citizen, any thing u know about Haiti
Where are you travelling from? What is your nationality?
Originalsly: Naturalized, Permanent Resident or Illegal.... doesn't matter... no one will know... but as soon as you speak with a foreign accent.... you are perceived as a foreigner and should be expecting the question 'where are you from'?. If you were born in the US.... and at age 4 for whatever reasons taken to Nigeria and returned to the US at age 21 with a Nigerian accent... you will be perceived as a foreigner... then the question..'where you from'?.... if the answer is given without explanation.. you would be strengthening the belief that foreigners cannot be trusted... they are liars! If you were born in Nigeria... migrated to the US at age 5... illegally... by age 10 and above... no one would ever even think you are a foreigner.....accent is everything.... until it comes to documentation.... status documentation. On descrimination..... yes... there is subtle discrimination in the US because open discrimination can send you to prison or companies sued. Punch a guy... you are charged for assault.... call him a nigga/white thrash then punch him.... you would be charged for assault and discrimination. On Nigerians in the Police Force... you have to have College and above qualifications to be recruited. Not many Nigerians reaching that level of education would even consider being Police officers. Most likely, most of the ones whonare.. we're brought up in the US.
You can never be charged with discrimination for calling someone a nigger unless you are running a business or you are an employee. In that case, there is ground for lawsuit against the company ( on the ground of racial discrimination/harassment).
As an individual, there is nothing illegal in calling someone a nigger. Maybe immoral and reprehensible but not illegal. There is no ground for lawsuit when someone call another person a nigger.
unipol: Let me use this forum to pass this important message to Nigerians in Italy to be mindful of their movement. Since last week when one Nigerian by Name Desmond, who lives in Bologna Italy killed a 76 years old woman and dumped her corpse in a bush. The Italian carabiniere and polizia has been searching and arresting every Nigerian in Italian street especially the drug pushers, load worker (ashawos) and sholoti boys. Many Nigerians have been deported and many others are in deportation camps. So all Nigerians in Italy should please stay indoor for now till further notice.
You mean a nigerian had killed a 76 years old woman last week and already many nigerians have been deported as the result of that crime? Com'on bro, I don't think the deportation process could go that fast.
As for your assertion that the Italian police has been arresting every Nigerian on the street of Italy, how do they make a difference between Nigerians and other Africans?
zanogo: God bless you, i watched the documentary too, the players were complaining inside the plane of horrible smell because of the things those babalawos brought with them, they were beaten like thieves in the world cup, lost all 3 matches heavily , went back to zaire with no government representative to welcome them back....and most players went back to their initial profession like shoe making, taxi driving etc
... but one Zaire player ended up playing professional soccer in Germany. His name is Emmanuel Kakoko Etepe
According to the Bible, King Solomon was the richest in mankind history (2 Chronicles 1:11-12 )
11God said to Solomon, "Because you had this in mind, and did not ask for riches, wealth or honor, or the life of those who hate you, nor have you even asked for long life, but you have asked for yourself wisdom and knowledge that you may rule My people over whom I have made you king, 12wisdom and knowledge have been granted to you. And I will give you riches and wealth and honor, such as none of the kings who were before you has possessed nor those who will come after you."…
