I'd suggest a book for every body here suffering from anxiety or depression. At least it will put things into perspective, for most of us suffer from what is called Cognitive Distortion. We are always worried about what people think of us and it is a very erroneous way of thinking. Send me your email or add me on BBM. Book Details Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy by David D. Nairaland / General / Re: 10 Things Happy People Don’t Care For by TheDauraMallam: 8:44am On Sep 20, 2015 |
“To Egyptians, the things that have held them back include an ineffective and corrupt state and a society where they cannot use their talent, ambition, ingenuity, and what education they can get. But they also recognize that the roots of these problems are political. All the economic impediments they face stem from the way political power in Egypt is exercised and monopolized by a narrow elite. This, they understand, is the first thing that has to change. Yet, in believing this, the protestors of Tahrir Square have sharply diverged from the conventional wisdom on this topic. When they reason about why a country such as Egypt is poor, most academics and commentators emphasize completely different factors. Some stress that Egypt’s poverty is determined primarily by its geography, by the fact that the country is mostly a desert and lacks adequate rainfall, and that its soils and climate do not allow productive agriculture. Others instead point to cultural attributes of Egyptians that are supposedly inimical to economic development and prosperity. Egyptians, they argue, lack the same sort of work ethic and cultural traits that have allowed others to prosper, and instead have accepted Islamic beliefs that are inconsistent with economic success. A third approach, the one dominant among economists and policy pundits, is based on the notion that the rulers of Egypt simply don’t know what is needed to make their country prosperous, and have followed incorrect policies and strategies in the past. If these rulers would only get the right advice from the right advisers, the thinking goes, prosperity would follow. To these academics and pundits, the fact that Egypt has been ruled by narrow elites feathering their nests at the expense of society seems irrelevant to understanding the country’s economic problems. In this book we’ll argue that the Egyptians in Tahrir Square not most academics and commentators, have the right idea. In fact, Egypt is poor precisely because it has been ruled by a narrow elite that have organized society for their own benefit at the expense of the vast mass of people. Political power has been narrowly concentrated, and has been used to create great wealth for those who possess it, such as the $70 billion fortune apparently accumulated by ex-president Mubarak. The losers have been the Egyptian people, as they only too well understand. We’ll show that this interpretation of Egyptian poverty, the people’s interpretation, turns out to provide a general explanation for why poor countries are poor. Whether it is North Korea, Sierra Leone, or Zimbabwe, we’ll show that poor countries are poor for the same reason that Egypt is poor. Countries such as Great Britain and the United States became rich because their citizens overthrew the elites who controlled power and created a society where political rights were much more broadly distributed, where the government was accountable and responsive to citizens, and where the great mass of people could take advantage of economic opportunities. We’ll show that to understand why there is such inequality in the world today we have to delve into the past and study the historical dynamics of societies. We’ll see that the reason that Britain is richer than Egypt is because in 1688, Britain (or England, to be exact) had a revolution that transformed the politics and thus the economics of the nation. People fought for and won more political rights, and they used them to expand their economic opportunities. The result was a fundamentally different political and economic trajectory, culminating in the Industrial Revolution.” Excerpt From: Acemoglu, Daron. “Why Nations Fail: The Origins of Power, Prosperity, and Poverty.” Crown Business, 2012-03-20T00:00:00+00:00. iBooks. This will help us to understand if the situation in Egypt has changed today and whether the revolution that overthrew Mubarak will lead to a new set of institutions capable of bringing prosperity to ordinary Egyptians. Egypt has had revolutions in the past that did not change things, because those who mounted the revolutions simply took over the reins from those they’d deposed and re-created a similar system. It is indeed difficult for ordinary citizens to acquire real political power and change the way their society works. But it is possible, and we’ll see how this happened in England, France, and the United States, and also in Japan, Botswana, and Brazil” Excerpt From: Acemoglu, Daron. “Why Nations Fail: The Origins of Power, Prosperity, and Poverty.” Crown Business, 2012-03-20T00:00:00+00:00. iBooks. This was another scheme designed to force people into the labor market and reduce wages for Spanish landowners. Another institution, the repartimiento de mercancias, also became widespread during de Toledo’s tenure. Derived from the Spanish verb repartir, to distribute, this repartimiento, literally “the distribution of goods,” involved the forced sale of goods to locals at prices determined by Spaniards. Finally, de Toledo introduced the trajin—meaning, literally, “the burden”—which used the indigenous people to carry heavy loads of goods, such as wine or coca leaves or textiles, as a substitute for pack animals, for the business ventures of the Spanish elite. Throughout the Spanish colonial world in the Americas, similar institutions and social structures emerged. After an initial phase of looting, and gold and silver lust, the Spanish created a web of institutions designed to exploit the indigenous peoples. The full gamut of encomienda, mita, repartimiento, and trajin was designed to force indigenous people’s living standards down to a subsistence level and thus extract all income in excess of this for Spaniards. This was achieved by expropriating their land, forcing them to work, offering low wages for labor services, imposing high taxes, and charging high prices for goods that were not even voluntarily bought. Though these institutions generated a lot of wealth for the Spanish Crown and made the conquistadors and their descendants very rich, they also turned Latin America into the most unequal continent in the world and sapped much of its economic potential.” Excerpt From: Acemoglu, Daron. “Why Nations Fail: The Origins of Power, Prosperity, and Poverty.” Crown Business, 2012-03-20T00:00:00+00:00. iBooks. Nairaland / General / 15 Terrifying Animals And Where They Live Destinations by TheDauraMallam: 8:04am On Sep 10, 2015 |
There are millions, even billions of different types of animals and species. They all have special abilities and characteristics that help them survive in their habitats. Humans are still learning about the animals we see everyday. There are a lot of creature that we really don’t know about. Part of the reason we don’t know much about them is because they are terrifying. Whether it’s the way they look, or the way they act, these animals probably will never be on anyone’s list to have as a pet. This list will show you some of the mos terrifying animal on earth and where they are. Poodle Moth There isn’t much information on the poodle moth. We know that it is possibly a fairly new species of moth discovered in 2009 by Dr. Arthur Anker of Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. He found it in the Gran Sabana region of Venezuela. It bears similarities to the Muslin Moth, but is not classified the same. We also know that is it scary looking and that I will not be making any trips to Venezuela anytime soon. Cyclops Shark Seeing a cyclops shark is very rare. Once you do see it you will wish you didn’t. It just freakishly terrifying to look at. A shark should have two eyes that’s the way thing should naturally be. Cyclops sharks are not a normal occurrence it is a deformity known as Cyclopia that can happen to humans and other animals as well. This one-eyed shark was found in Mexico when a fisher found it in the stomach of another, bigger and normal shark. Goliath Tiger Fish There are too many types of fish to even count. There are some species of fish we have yet to see. One type of fish that we don’t want to see is the Goliath tiger fish. The Goliath tiger fish is found in the Congo River Basin and Lake Tanganyika in Africa. The Goliath tiger fish has big sharp teeth to feed on other fish. There have been some incidents in the Congo, where people have been attacked. Marabou Stork The marabou stork is a large wading bird. It is not the stork that is usually animated and used as a way to tell kids where babies come from. This stork is ugly. It is often times called the “undertaker” bird. These large birds can be found in Africa south of the Sahara, in both wet and dry habitats, often near where humans live. Lobster Moth Caterpillar The lobster moth caterpillar’s name is self explanatory. This caterpillar has resembles to a lobster, but not the lobster that is served on a plate. The caterpillar looks much worst. It lives in the whole Palearctic ecozone which cover Europe and Asia, and Africa, except the North of Africa. In England it is more frequent in the Southern counties. Asian Sheepshead Wrasse Lucky for us we don’t really get to see the terrifying and weird looking animals that live in the ocean. The Asian Sheepshead Wrasse is one of those animals. It is the largest species of wrasse, and is native to the western Pacific Ocean. It is only known from the Korean Peninsula, China, Japan, and the Ogasawara Islands, where it inhabits rocky reef areas. Tube Nosed Fruit Bat Regular bats look scary and this one is one of the scarier ones. The tube nosed fruit bat looks like a sneak and devilish animal. It lives in subtropical or tropical dry forests. They can be found in the Philippines, Australia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands. Due to deforestation, the tube nosed fruit bat is facing extinction Cthulhu Larva Named after a fictional deity, the cthulhu larva are baby sea cucumbers. They look like alien babies ready to hatch and take over the world but they’re harmless. They are normally found 1,000-4,000 m below sea level eating mud, algae and other debris on the ocean floor. They can be found in almost every ocean on earth. Naked Mole Rat It’s a mole, a rat and it’s naked. It can’t get any more freaky than that. The naked mole rat spends most of its life underground. Also known has a sand puppy, it is native to East Africa. Despite its looks the naked mole rat is quite fascinating. Naked mole rats are remarkable for their resistance to cancer and its longevity. They also have a lack of pain sensation in their skin. Satanic Leaf-Tailed Gecko The name it self is terrifying. The satanic leaf-tailed gecko has a tail that looks like a leaf allowing it to blend in with the trees and shrubs in its habitat. It relies on this camouflage to hunt his food at night and to keep from becoming food during the day. This little guy can be found only on the island of Madagascar. Frilled Shark If you thought a great white shark was the most terrifying of the species, you obviously have not seen the frilled shark. Frilled sharks are found in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. They stay close to the bottom of the ocean, and rarely make their way to higher depths. The long, extremely flexible jaws enable it to swallow prey whole, while its many rows of small, needle-like teeth make it difficult for the prey to escape. It feeds on fish and other sharks. Wolf Fish The bottom of the ocean is another world. It is home to some vicious fish like the wolf fish. This fish is far from your pet gold fish. As a matter of fact it will probably eat your pet gold fish. They produce a natural anti-freeze to keep their blood moving fluently as they swim in the cold waters of the Atlantic and North Pacific Oceans. The wolf fish has sharp teeth to snag its prey as it swims by. Trogloraptor Spider The trogloraptor is a large spider with long legs and a distinct yellow-brown hue. It is a new species of spider found in 2010. The trogloraptor was found deep inside caves in Oregon and others found in debris of old growth redwood forests of northwest California. Trogloraptor possess venom glands. However, the venom is not known to be harmful to humans. The spiders themselves are very shy and non-aggressive, they just look terrifying. Star Nosed Mole The star nosed mole looks as if it was not from this planet. It can be found in wet low areas of eastern Canada and the northeastern United States. The star-nosed mole is easily identified by the twenty-two pink fleshy appendages ringing its snout, which is used as a touch organ. The star nosed mole is a good swimmer and like other moles, it borrows under ground. Honey Pot Ant The honey pot ant has the ability to swell up to three times its original size. Honey ants, are ants which have specialized workers that are gorged with food by workers to the point that their abdomens swell enormously. They are like storage units for the colony. These ants stay underground, mostly in the hot and dry areas of the Southwest in the U.S. Spiders, Spiders, Spiders! All spiders scare us, don't they? 1 Like 1 Share |

Macdove02: All actors get different prices. I'm sure you know that. And there is no way you would use Fine Akindele as a 15 year old girl...if that's what your story wants. The thing is, it's the story that determines budget. Not otherwise. So that's the difference between Paranormal Activity (15K) and Furious 7 (190 million) You get it now? That's film business 101 for you. If Kunle shot October 1st for 2 million dollars as he said, then Titanic or Furious 7 was probably shot with 1 billion dollars. For perspective, you should see Paranormal Activity first. It's on youtube. |
