I knew they were going to look for a thread like this. It is a normal trend on this forum. Whenever Tinubu or Fashola is taking a serious bashing or GEJ is scoring a major point, they will have to look for something fast to counter it even if the thing is a post from 2009. We understand. grin grin grin grin grin grin

Dudu_Negro:

Afam,

I dont mean this response to insult and i hope you or anyone else do not view it as such. Your view here highlits the difference between "individualism" and "collectivism".

Yoruba social contract is a collective one. When the central authority issues an order the citizens uphold its tenets. This is not so in Igboland.

If an Igbo person is in Yorubaland the individualism must give way to collectivism.

This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard! This is the same kind of thing that fuels Boko Haram.

Lets even assume for example that there is regional integration in the south west under say a regional minister or the equivalent. are you saying the final laws that will govern the people will come from the Obas instead of the constitution guiding the integration? Is that how you intend to run a modern society? I am so disappointed in this kind of Boko Haram reasoning. NA WA!

Since the whole Lagos became the subject of Oba of Lagos which preceded the colonial era.

Nobody is a subject of Oba of lagos! He has no such constitutional powers. Even the sultan of Sokoto was removed and replaced by Abacha and nothing happened! This your 1902 theory is funny. He might have some influence as per his personality, but he has no such constitutional powers. If it boils down to the constitution, he will be served his due! shioor! na wa for the kind thing wey we dey hear for this forum oh!

Does that also mean you have no respect for our traditional rulers since they are no longer the government of the day?

Anyways Iyalojas and her team are part of Local government recognized market administrators. You might need to confirm at your nearest Local government office.

When did the whole Lagos become one big market? I dont understand this argument honestly!

She was not just the mother of Tinubu, long before Tinubu became known, joined NADECo, became a senator and later a governor, there was a powerful Iyaloja of Lagos, Alhaja Abibat Mogaji.

You might need to read up on the functions and powers of an Iyaloja though.

A lot of people think she became influential because she was Tinubu's mother whereas this woman had been dining with kings and head of states long before Tinubu became anything.

Who cares if she is Obama's mother? Is she bigger than society? What kind of argument is this? very funny!!!

Even the queen of England will not be buried like that. Who is she? Most people in Lagos didnt even know she existed until one week ago! You come here to defend a barbaric and meaningless act just because you have to defend Tinubu yet you will quickly jump to other thread and criticize other people. Shame on your blatant hypocrisy!

Pls, let's not overstretch it. Let's be happy that now Nigerians don't have to worry about where the next bomb will go off and let's walk on solving the armed robbery situation cos it's still rife in the country.

I do agree with you and to take it to the next level, I think this affords us a window of opportunity to create a new mentality of community policing and being our brothers keeper. Irrespective of political differences, one thing I have been unhappy about is the fact that some are ready to bring the whole place down just to score some point. We should instead, come together in some form to help ourselves and be our brothers keeper. Maybe NL should start contributing in a way to Nigeria by helping to create a page where users can help police their communities. Seun should learn to give back, not just capitalize on our differences to make money... wink

misterh: This further proves that Lagos state is indeed a Yoruba state. A friend of mine who wasn't Yoruba used to claim that Lagos state is a no-man's land. But he forgot that Lagos state has an oba who is recognised by the authorities, indigenes bear Yoruba names et al. This debacle is fueled because the late Iyaloja's son is a prominent opposition politician. Some people are saying that in order to move forward, we should throw away our tradition. Smh for this kinda people. We aspire to be as developed as Europe but this does not mean that we should forget our own identity. Even Europeans have their own cultures. Nuff said!

It proves absolutely nothing. This your 19th century theory is nothing but laughable! Nobody owns anywhere. I repeat, nobody owns anywhere! Wake up from your slumber. You live in a one room face me I slap you apartment and come to a public forum claiming you own Lagos. Oya, go out on the street now and enter any shop and pick whatever you like and walk away, because you own Lagos... grin

You only own the lean change in your bank account and the 4 pairs of Jeans hanging by your bed and that tokunbo TV you picked up from Ladipo, nothing else! Stop deluding yourself! The owners of Lagos are anyone, no matter the tribe, who has made enough money to buy a cool Land in Ikoyi or Lekki phase 1 or Palmgrove Estate, Alaka Estate, Ogudu GRA, Ikeja GRA, etc and runs an office on the Island or Allen avenue. That is how to own Lagos. Not this your poverty strikken ownership theory you are spewing here. The whole world has moved past that. Dont Nigerians in the UK fight for their rights and become leaders of society? Havent Nigerians in America become mayors? You better slap yourself 3 times and go wash your sleepy face so you can wake up to reality... grin grin grin

9jadelta: well, you have a point but there is little difference.. When government declares public holiday, everyone sits at home. Now imagine someone like me that will need to go to the bank and save my money but cant simply because, christians/muslims are at home celebrating one dead man from 2000yrs ago. Jauxtapose these two things. You will realize that we both have a point

When government declares public holiday, everyone does not sit at home my friend. Please stop repeating it. Even the banks do not sit at home because the government announcement is compulsory or binding. It is totally their own decision to work or not to work. If a bank wants to work on Christmas day, there is no law or government declaration that stops them from doing so. Government declaration is for government workers. Even the government workers can still go to their office if they want to and nobody will stop them. You are getting things twisted!

What we are talking about here is a violation of people fundamental rights! You only do this kind of thing in a curfew or state of emergency. It is a carry over from military tyranny and precolonial backwardness!
Politics / Re: Lagos Markets Closed In Abibat Mogaji's Honour by thelastPope(m): 4:57pm On Jun 18, 2013
9jadelta: @thelostpope
what will u say about the idea of declaring public holidays for easter or christmas when we are fully aware that not everyone is a christian? It has become tradition even when its meaningless to people like me? Same goes for declaring public holiday for muslims. People dnt care simply becoz the holidays didnt hurt anybody. If those market women and men are not cool with the idea of closing shops to respect the dead, then there would have been a protest or things like that. The same way i dnt complain when government declares public holiday for easter. You cant compare that to traditions that kill people (human sacrifise etc). We'll respect the dead somehow. For example. Remebrance day, there will public holiday in some countries. does that mean every family has dead soilder?

What is actually wrong with some of you, honestly? Is there a law that says you cannot open shop on easter, sunday, christmas? why cant you tell the difference between coconut and pawpaw? If you dont understand the difference between a declaration of public holiday and an order to close shops, then I cant help you. You will have to ask your teacher for that explanation.

By the way, quit using that Niger Delta moniker. Stick with your SW thing. No one is fooled by it.

Funny you...For your information i'm quite intelligent (I think? lol)
Buy seriously, they have been doing these kind of things since..... and its obviously not new, i don't know why this is different?

I guess its because its Lagos State sha...there are parts of Imo that i dear not kill a snake (even if it crawls under my bedsheet) and parts of Oyo i dear not walk after 7pm for most part of the month...

Let Lagos enjoy its culture too....lol

Whether it is Imo or Oyo, what is wrong is wrong. If I see a post that says the same thing in Imo or Calabar or Kaduna, I will oppose it. I didnt support the MASSOB sit at home. But even that was voluntary. It was not observed in Enugu!

Nonetheless i would advice you to petition the Oba of Lagos or other Oba's in Yoruba land to have such customs removed from our culture as it is backward, the same way an european feels prostrating for ones parent is backward..

I didnt insult you! I only questioned your intellect because of your reply. If you feel insulted, I am sorry.

It isnt the same thing with prostrating. When you close shops, you deprive people of funds, access to food, even deprive them of medical aid. 3. Masqurades barring women from movement is culture so we should keep it and protect it vehemently

4. Keeping of slaves is a culture all over Nigeria so we should keep it

5. Opprssion of widows and orphans is a culture in many parts of Nigeria so we should respect it

misterh: Thank you, sir! You done?? As i learnt in sociology, no culture is bad as long as those who practise it see nothing wrong innit. In this part of the world, we tend to judge other people's culture using the indices of our own culture. E.g an Igbo/Hausa man will condemn this culture of the Yoruba simply cos it's not done in his town & vice versa, forgetting that each culture have values and morals.

It isnt culture! Stop spewing that baldadash! Whether it is Lagos or Kano or Onitsha, it is wrong. You cannot justify it with the tradition tag. That is a huge economic waste and untold hardship to millions. This is why the late Gani fought this kind of nonsense everytime. Every thursday, some idiotas will close down shops all over Lagos for what, I dont know! What kind of backwardness is that? And to say it is coming from you guys who claim you are sophisticated is even worse.
