misterh: But sir/ma'am, this has nothing to do with LASG. In what way are the poor going to suffer because of this? This tradition is the Yoruba tradition and the partakers have no ish with it. Have you got a problem with the megacity project?

For your information, the so called partakers are already swearing for you! It is not tradition. It is impunity and backwardness! Your tradition line is very weak

Wise_old_man:

Tradition is tradition, if all shops in eko atlantic must be closed in that case, it should. Do u know weekend in UAE is friday and saturday...and in saudi its thursday and friday. Thats their tradition, we Africans should learn to respect ours.

If an Iyalode dies in a Yoruba land (like Lagos) all markets under her is shut in memoriam

Stop spewing this backwardness my friend! Is weekend a tradition? So our observance of saturday and sunday as work free days is tradition? Your free education is questionable honestly!
Politics / Re: Lagos Markets Closed In Abibat Mogaji's Honour by thelastPope(m): 2:18pm On Jun 18, 2013
misterh: The way some people comment here amuses me. It is a tradition that when the Iyaloja dies, the markets are closed in her honour. But some people here will try to alter the history this time because this Iyaloja is the mother of the opposition leader, Tinubu. Closing the market has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with Bola Tinubu.
To peeps criticising this tradition, what right have you to condemn it? Are the marketmen/women complaining? We need to start respecting people's culture. This culture has been since time immemorial and there have been no problems. But our quest to be 'civilise' makes us see our culture and tradition as bad. RIP to the late Iyaloja.

What stupid culture is that? What is a market? You are an ignoramus. Are shops all over Lagos market? If you want to close down a market, why didnt you go and close down idumota market? When has a shop on Ikorodu road or bank anthony way become market? If you dont know the differenc between culture and backwardness, you need to go back to school

Shut your trap my friend! Did the Yoruba market women tell you they are happy with the decision? Do you know how many are grumbling this morning? You seat in Alausa and do what you like and talk like you have the peoples support when all the market women are swearing for you and it will surely catch you!

Katangora: It a normal tradition among the market union, when the market leader of a particular market dies, market is closed for at least 2 days as a mark of honour.. Now the market leader of d whole Nigeria has gone to meet her maker, all markets in the federation ll be closed as a mark of honour, that she is 97 does not change a thing..

What is normal about such a prehistoric practice. huh! Are you for real! And you will later post that politicians are the problem. Something is not right amongst some of you youths

Whenever a king or an Iyaloja dies in any Yoruba town, the markets under them are closed for a day or more in their honour. This has been a practice from time memorial.

hardknockbroda: Whenever a market leader dies, all d markets under him/her are locked to honour the leader this is not a new thing in our history so I don't knw why some pple are just whining (I guess its cos shez Tinubu's mum) ... Infact, when a shop owner dies in d market in my area d whole market is shut for a day.

What nonsense 11th century history or tradition is that? I thought you all want to modernise the SW? I thought you are building a mega city? So when you finish eko atlantic city and it becomes the new Dubai and people from all over the world move there, you will ask them to close their shops because someone died? Why cant you make up your mind if you want to move into the future or return to the prehistoric flintstones?

Acidosis: I'm quiet sure the governor didn't ban these stuffs because of security reasons.

He banned these things because he wants Edo to look good.. These keke napeps are so ugly especially when they queue up in tens and hundreds on the street.. and they often cause confusing on the roads making the whole place look like the pit of hell...

We cannot keep dreaming of development, better infrastructures WHEN we cannot do away with 19th century equipments!

This minute you want to be like Dubai..

The next minute you complain when the govt ban ancient materials.

Gosh!! can't believe people still crave for "okada" of all things in this jet age!

The people manufacturing these stuffs called keke napep, will never use it..

BTW, I heard the price of one keke napep is high (about N350K)..

Why would anyone spend such amount on that stuffs in the first place when you could easily get a fairly used car for taxi, rent a shop/office space, invest, do business etc...
Nigerians and quick money!

They just love the quick - quick method.
Whats wrong if people learn trade, other professional and vocational hand works.. AND leave transport business for those that can afford a beffitting taxi (government specification)

How long shall we stay under intense sun and rain on the roads even when we have the money to pay?!

Innoson can easily manufactured nice air conditioned yet cheap suvs for taxi drivers... Its not a bad idea.

You just come to a public forum and post nonsense. Are you the one that is going to buy airconditioned cars for these people? You just talk from your behind with so much insensitivity! Maybe you have uncles that have been dashing you money all your life! Maybe you have never gone through hard times before because you have a mummy breastfeeding you at age 25! If I could, I would come out from your computer or phone and slap your mouth for this nonsense you posted!

Politics / Re: Tinubu Embarrassed In Dubai For Associating With Buhari by thelastPope(m): 11:41am On Jun 18, 2013
take dat: All these politicians should hide their heads in shame. How many people from poor African countries come to Nigeria to have parties? And They also took their excessive irresponsible behavior of politicizing every gathering to a foreign country. the senator jettisoned the usual formalities and decorums of a wedding to attack another guest.

Members of the ruling party and the opposition are no good. The father of the groom is one of the subsidy thieves, a known proxy of Diezani whose company was awarded 4 oil blocks in Delta state worth billions of dollars in which it neither tendered nor bidded. Delta state oil producing communities recently protested and petitioned the National Assembly over the contentious deal, but the saintly Senator Adeyemi had nothing to say about it. The father of the bride, a permanent secretary in a federal ministry took the wedding of her daughter to Dubai, Senator Adeyemi didn't also see anything wrong in that! Hypocrites everywhere, God let us know better!

I am glad you are gradually becoming more objective. This is what I believe real Nigerians should do, not what you guys used to do. The ACN folks started this whole sectional and tribal trend. If they become more objective like this your post, Nigeria will be better for it. Folks who support PDP will not find it a problem if they no the person criticising them will also criticise the other side with the same vigour. But as long as they see a one sided criticism targeted at grabbing political power, this trend is just going to go on and on. Although your criticism was still significantly skewed in favour of ACN, it is still ok

Politics / Tinubu Receives Shocker In Dubai As Adeyemi Asks Him 'why Serve Buhari'? by thelastPope(m): 11:12am On Jun 18, 2013
Leader of the ACN and former governor of Lagos state, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu got the shocker of his life after he was publicly humiliated by Kogi Senator and former President of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Senator Smart Adeyemi who asked him at a party in Dubai why he would serve a man who truncated democracy! Tinubu was stunned at the effrontery of Adeyemi as was the audience. Tinubu, along with controversial former minister of the Federal Capital Teritorry, Nasir Elrufai, immediately left the hall after the incident apparently angered that Adeyemi put Tinubu on the spot.

A large number of the who is who in the Nigerian socio-political and economic strata had stormed the City of Dubai in the UAE for the society wedding of the son of oil mogul, Chief Jide Omokore, Tosin and his heartthrob, Faisal, daughter of Ambassador Azeez Musa.

There were no fewer than 20 senators on hand, including Senate spokesman, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, Senator Smart Adeyemi, Senators Magareth Okadigbo, Zainab Kure, Gbenga Ashafa, Olugbenga Onaolapo Obadara, Boluwaji Kunlere, Anthony Adeniyi, Clever Ikisikpo, Aisha Jummai Alhassan, Esther Nenadi Usman, Olubunmi Adetunmbi and a former member of the upper chamber, Senator Joseph Akaagerger.

Besides the heavy Senate representation, the crème de la crème of Lagos was also represented. The Asiwaju of Lagos, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu; the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu; a number of red cap chiefs, a former Commissioner for Information and Strategy in Lagos State, Mr. Dele Alake; and a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai were also at the wedding.

Governors in attendance included the Akwa-Ibom State helmsman, Chief Godswill Akpabio and his wife; Kogi State governor, Captain Idris Wada; a former Military Administrator of Oyo State, General David Jemibewon, former chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ahmadu Alli; former governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris; Minister of Trade and Investment, Dr. Segun Aganga, among many others.

Something no one was prepared for, however, happened at the hall. As guests were getting seated, the lot fell on the Chairman of Senate Committee on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Senator Smart Adeyemi, to welcome the dignitaries on behalf of the groom’s family. The Senator, a broadcaster, went on and on reeling out the long list of the high and mighty.

A drama was to play out between Senator Adeyemi and Senator Tinubu. Adeyemi, who since he left behind his camera and microphone, has imbibed the art of politicking just like the veterans, took Tinubu by surprise.

He started by recognising Tinubu as the landlord of Chief Jide Omokore in Lagos. He said Tinubu had shown himself as a good landlord at that and that he was proud of Tinubu’s political prowess. He stated that looking at Tinubu’s attainments so far, he should not be seen as Asiwaju of Lagos, but Asiwaju of the entire kaaro o ojiire (Yorubaland). Tinubu was elated, seeing a key opposition politician eulogise him to high heavens.

Sources at the gathering told Sunday Tribune that the former Lagos governor never knew he was in for a shocker from Adeyemi who after reeling out the ACN leader’s pedigree, put the question forward. Why would Tinubu be deploying his democratic credentials in service of undemocratic elements? The hall went into deep silence, but it was not a question and answer session. So, Tinubu could not offer a response. Many of the guests who had offered ceaseless claps as Senator Adeyemi reeled out Tinubu’s credentials were also shocked at the twist.

According to the Kogi senator, Tinubu should be seen as leading the charge towards democratisation of the country, rather than promoting those who have truncated democratic growth of the nation in the past.

Senator Adeyemi said that Since Tinubu should be seen as Asiwaju of the Yoruba race, he was inherently a democrat because the Yoruba were democrats. He added: As democrats, you cannot be seen to be aligned with a dictator.

Senator Adeyemi had said: “I admire Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He is the landlord of the groom’s father in Lagos. A good landlord he is and he has honoured his tenant here today. I looked at his accomplishments in politics and his political antecedents and I say that this man should not just be Asiwaju of Lagos but Asiwaju of the entire Kaaro o ojiire.
“Senator Tinubu sir, I am, however, shocked that someone of your pedigrees will be devoting his political acumen for the service of a non democrat. Someone who had truncated democracy in the past….”

“I want to assure you, Asiwaju, that there is a president in Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, who has fought more battles than any other Nigerian leader in the name of terrorism.
“In 2012, the budget for security was N900 billion; that money is enough to dualise all major roads in Nigeria. It is enough to equip our universities. If that money had entered some African countries, it would cripple the economy, but it was committed to security because of terrorism.

“Goodluck Jonathan can be likened to a pilot who took off and suddenly entered into turbulence. With patience and perseverance, he weathered the storm. Today, he has reached the cruising level and he is cruising towards 2015. I believe you should be with this president as a democrat and not with a dictator.”

The hall initially went into pin-drop silence, but then erupted in huge ovations for the Kogi senator. Tinubu felt the shocking twist to the senator’s prolonged eulogy. But it was not a question and answer session so he could not offer a response.

Afterwards, Tinubu and the former FCT Minister, el-Rufai, left the venue. They were said to have been apparently unhappy at the decision of Senator Smart to turn the venue to a political gathering.

To cap it all, Senator Adeyemi moved a motion and put the question as it is done in the Senate. He put the question, saying; “those in favour of the solemnisation of Tosin and Faisal here today, say ‘aye’…… and the ayes have it.”

It was not the first time Senator Adeyemi was lashing out at those he blamed for truncating Nigeria’s democracy in the past. During a debate on the remunerations for past presidents and Heads of State, Senator Adeyemi rose on the Senate floor to announce that Nigeria should place a ban on anyone who had truncated democracy in the past. He insisted that anyone who had been seen to act negatively against the growth of Nigeria’s democracy in the past should not be allowed as partakers in the current politics, adding that the punishment for such persons should be life ban from partisan politics.

Politics / Kalabari Chiefs: ”amaechi Lied, We Don’t Support Him Against Jonathan”! by thelastPope(m): 12:30pm On Jun 17, 2013
RE: PURPORTED KALABARI SOLIDARITY VISIT TO GOVERNOR AMAECHI:
KALABARI NOT IN SUPPORT OF GOVERNOR AMAECHI AGAINST THE PRESIDENT
We, as concerned Chiefs, opinion leaders and Kalabari elders, on behalf of the overwhelming majority of Kalabari, and indeed all Rivers people, note with strong consternation and utter embarrassment the persisting penchance of few members of the Governor Rotimi Amaechi’s government in convening phantom meetings of ethnic groups and describing same as solidarity visits to the governor; and thereafter publishing pre-written communiques as having emerged from such stage-managed meetings.
This pervading politics of deceit in Rivers State Government House was directed against Kalabari people on 11 June 2013, when protegees of governor Amaechi deceitfully invited Kalabari Chiefs and elders to meet with the governor and thereafter made several publications in the mass media to the effect that Kalabari Chiefs and people have declared unalloyed support for Governor Amaechi in his senseless fight against the presidency.
We summarily and categorically state that it is not true that Kalabari Chiefs and elders paid a solidarity visit to Governor Amaechi on Tuesday, 11 June, 2013, and declared support for his administration or person against our dear Ijaw son President Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan, GCFR.
Kalabari people had at no time decided to undertake such an adventure in solidarity with, or in support of Governor Amaechi concerning any issue involved in the feud with Mr. President. It is our considered position that what took place in Rivers State Government House was a cheap ambush and a show of shame by a handful of politically desperate people to belittle Kalabari while pursuing their myopic and selfish agenda.
The truth was that the governor initiated the meeting and Kalabari Chiefs and people attended because they had thought that the governor wanted to discuss matters affecting Kalabari land but to their utter embarrassment protegees of the governor converted the meeting into a solidarity visit to the governor by Kalabari people.
This open manipulation did not go well with the people at the meeting and the duly appointed representative of the Amayanabo of Kalabari HRH Chief Gbobo Disrael-Bobmanuel after due consultation with the Kalabari sons and daughters present at the meeting, discarded the so-called “solidarity speech” and instead thanked the governor for inviting them and offered that Kalabari-Ijaw people were ready and willing to mediate in the feud between Governor Amaechi and Mr. President.
In his reply, Governor Amaechi was visibly unhappy with what he referred to as the noncommittal disposition of Kalabari people in the on-going crisis.
The Governor showed no welcome for the suggestion of reconciliation and openly tried to incite the Kalabari people against his perceived federal enemies. The governor insisted that his travails were due to his fight for the restoration of Kalabari oil wells.
We disagree with Amaechi on this deceitful claim that his political travails were as a result of his fight for the restoration of Kalabari oil wells. This to us is mere blackmail because the Kalabari oil wells did not remove the Chief G.U. Ake led PDP executives nor caused the conflicts in the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and grounded his jet plane on account of doubtful ownership.
We consider it most dishonorable that in a political feud between Governor Amaechi and President Jonathan, the governor would ask Kalabari-Ijaw people to support him blindly against the President.
May we ask, that with a yearly budget of over 400billion Naira in the past six years amounting to over N2.4 trillion, what meaningful projects has Governor Amaechi executed in Kalabari land despite its huge oil and gas resources for him to seek solidarity with Kalabari?
We want to put it on record that the boundary crises between Kalabari and Nembe or between Rivers State and Bayelsa State started in the 19th century up to the last administration of Rivers State, which led to the suspension of the 12th edition map produced by the Federal Surveyor General and the revenue of the disputed oil wells paid into escrow account by the Government of President Olusegun Obasanjo. It has been an on-going issue which is only now being escalated by self-seeking politicians.
Kalabari Chiefs, elders and leaders therefore refuse to be drawn into this imaginary display of support for Governor Amaechi. We rather call on the governor to stop his antagonist stance and support President Goodluck Jonathan. We believe that Rivers State is better placed with a South-South person as President rather than the Vice Presidential position. We therefore declare our unflinching support for President Goodluck Jonathan.

With each new phase, a new school in a new Community is picked and rebuilt from scratch using the exact same plan except for the 'Special schools'..

If a community doesnt have one, then most times its because the chiefs and villagers make outrageous demands to the contractors for compensation and recruitment of indegenes such as a friend experienced in Ogoni when he went to start work on one of the schools there.

ballabriggs: Lagos has built far number of classroom blocks in the last few years. It is just there and we don't even look at it anymore. From Ikeja High School, Ransome Kuti, to Ewutuntu, to Gbaja girls, how many do you even want to list.

You people have been circulating those pictures since the beginning of time. Only one bloack of 21 classrooms in Surulere... grin

Show us public schools all over Lagos. Amaechi Built the same thing all over Rivers. Infact, he used the same design thoughout. Same thing you find in Akwa Ibom. Good schools all over. Wher your own na? grin grin grin

If anyone knows the uncompleted buildings we call "Mudashiru" in most Lagos schools in those days. If you go round Lagos today you will not see any of those buildings, they have all been completed. Those buildings were left abandoned since Gbolahan Mudasiru's time in the mid 1980s. Fashola came in with the State Schools rehabilitation project and they are all completed today.

But like I always argue, Lagos is highly constrained by the surge in it's population. Places like Ikorodu and Ibeju were local fishing towns before have been taking over by the rising urban population. Most of the schools in those rural areas were planned for the farming population but today people are migrating in large numbers to those places and there is a huge pressure on resources and services in those areas.

Lies and more lies! Most people in Lagos put their children in private schools. There is no huge pressure in resources. Just an excuse for failure. There is no public school within 4 miles from my house....Liars like Liar Mohammed!
