He was wrong calling you daft. But you haven't said exactly what you want explained. Or is it that you are shy?
Jesus said his disciples will NOT see death until they see him coming in his kingdom. The kingdom has not yet come, yet all the disciples are dead.
I just need a simple explanation from those who know better than me.

Mark’s account of this statement is, "Verily I say unto you, there are some here of them that stand by, who shall in no wise taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God come with power" (Mark 9:1).

This passage is the assurance of Jesus to His followers.

" Some" refers to the Apostles

"Taste of death" means they will not die till they see.....

"Coming in his kingdom". By the coming of the kingdom of God we are to understand the manifestation of heavenly glory, which Christ began to make at his resurrection, and which he afterwards made more fully by sending the Holy Spirit, and by the performance of miracles; for by those beginnings he gave his people a taste of the newness of the heavenly life, when they perceived, by certain and undoubted proofs, that he was sitting at the right hand of the Father.
Thank you for your explanation.

You probably pride yourself on being more Christian than whoever does not agree with your understanding of the Bible.
I see pride running through all your posts all the time.
You must think you are a superior Christian to everyone else. You must think your church is superior to every other church.
Pride goes before a fall. Humble yourself as a Christian and understand we are all learning and none is perfect except God.

To sacrifice means to offer or set apart as a gift to God or a deity
Some sacrifices could be land, fields, animals, humans, etc... Only an ignorant person will reason that all living things sacrificed must be killed
My issue with people like you is the regular resort to using abusive words on anyone who does not agree with your perception. Why using the word ignorant?
The standard operating word in this passage is BURNT OFFERING!
No matter how you twist and turn the words of this Bible passage the standard operating word remains BURNT OFFERING.

Thanks for the explanation. At least I understand what happened now. This thing called religious fanatism would never allow Nigeria move forward.
There were actually a lot of very fanatical guys on this forum in those days. They threatened to visit his home somewhere in Sango Ota as well as threatened to destroy the forum itself if they are not granted their own section. No body will allow a bunch of fanatics to destroy his business, so I dont blame the administrator for granting their request, The swearing of an oath before commenting there is to show that whoever comments therein is a muslim. I hope you understand now.

Nairaland over the years has displayed something I find very disgusting. Anytime you want to comment on a Muslim post, they force you to admit some shitty stuff and then put it on your profile. Indeed, Seun is one of the problems of Nigeria. We should have gone past this stage on nairaland. Who does this on any forum? Just nairaland. You open the threads of other religions for comments but when it comes to Islam, they force you to profess what you don't understand before you can comment. Nigeria is indeed doomed and it shows how intolerant Muslims generally are in this country. I won't be surprised if they start targeting my account here. It's one of their traits. The only way Nigeria can move forward is for the citizens to stop carrying religion on their heads. It's another form of slavery for the average black man. Unfortunately our politicians have used this to keep us in perpetual darkness. If you setup protocols for comments on Islamic posts, why not do same for christians or traditionalists? It's just a pity that religious fanatism is openly being practiced here in a forum that claims to be for Nigerians. Really sad...
This is not to support the administrator(seun) but years ago the religious forum was one unit and nobody was forced to swear any oaths before posting .Muslims could post on Christian threads and vice versa, atheists or traditionalists could equally post on any thread that caught their fancy. However at a point Muslims began agitating to have their own section or they would trace the administrator to his home and harm him and harm his forum, this led to the creation of the Islamic section under its then fanatical moderator.
I am not saying it is right to swear an oath before posting in the Islam section but you have to understand that tne administrator has to protect his investment from threats and damage.

confusedlady:
Where is sacrifice mentioned in what you quoted?
So vow now equals to sacrifice?

Know this today that in Deuteronomy 12:31. God specifically forbids human sacrifice. Human sacrifice is a direct violation of Mosaic law.
The way that passage is written makes it obvious that the daughter was dedicated to the Lord as a perpetual virgin and not a human sacrifice. Judges 11:39
While I agree with you that God forbids human sacrifice as per mosaic laws, Jephthah for reasons best known to himself apparently decided to go against all Mosaic laws and made a sacrifice of his daughter. it was a rash vow but only a person with comprehension problems would go ahead and say the girl was not sacrificed.

Judges Chapter 11,verse 33-40.

33 And he smote them from Aroer, even till thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto the plain of the vineyards, with a very great slaughter. Thus the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.

34 And Jephthah came to Mizpeh unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter.

35 And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth unto the Lord, and I cannot go back.

36 And she said unto him, My father, if thou hast opened thy mouth unto the Lord, do to me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth; forasmuch as the Lord hath taken vengeance for thee of thine enemies, even of the children of Ammon.

37 And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may go up and down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my fellows.

38 And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she went with her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains.

39 And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she knew no man. And it was a custom in Israel,

40 That the daughters of Israel went yearly to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year

The story of the tragedy of Judge Jephthah and his unnamed daughter occurs in the book of Judges chapter 11. I have always been disturbed by this story in the Bible. This passage comes across as a hard passage to take. when we juxtapose this story with the story of Abraham and Isaac in Genesis chapter 22. I wonder why God does not intervene and stop Jephthah from sacrificing his daughter? My research in the Bible took me to Leviticus chapter 5,which talks about restitution sacrifices to replace rash Leviticus makes a provision for substitution's of animal sacrifice for rash vows and I wonder if Jephthah as a judge in Israel was not aware of this law and instead chose to go ahead and make a human sacrifice of his daughter to God.
May God give us enlightenment to understand his word.

Christianity EtcRe: Why Do The Gospel Resurrection Accounts Differ? by TheMadame(op): 6:06pm On Aug 29, 2023
The person hiding behind one finger is glaring for all to see. I read my Bible regularly and I understand and comprehend very well. I occasionally open threads and ask questions because I want to understand certain teaching in the religious book better. However when I open a thread I expect a logical and rational discussion so that everyone who comes across the thread gains a robust kind of knowledge and grows in the spirit as such that the person becomes a better believer grounded in the holy spirit.
You can not just come here and bring your half baked theories that your pastors regurgitated into your brain and come and vomit rubbish on a thread and expect everyone to swallow such shallow teachings hook line and sinker.
Check my past threads on Nairaland. I have been opening these intellectual threads since 2012. My threads ask questions and make you think. If you come on my thread and start posting wishy washy stuff, trust me I am calling you out whoever you maybe.
Before you come on any of my threads make sure you are intellectually grounded in the Bible or else you WILL be called out and EXPOSED.
Don't bring your half baked ideas to my thread and expect me to accept without you being questioned. If you can't take the heat stay out of my kitchen. If that makes you erroneously call me a Bible critic and a false Christian, then so be it. I will not be cowed. Bring superior logic and counter the points I placed on the table. Don't bring half baked wishy washy ideas here and expect not to be called out. Bring a proper superior argument here and I will be the first to acknowledge you. You are talking to a person that is very much grounded in religion.
Nothing more to say.

Let me ask u a simple question. According to John's account, did Mary Magdalene visit the tomb alone?

I'm sure u will never be able to answer the question honestly.
Now you are trying to turn this into a competition. I have clearly posted the screen shot of the relevant passage above .if you can not comprehend the passage then I am unable to help you. I will not be responding to you any further .
Christianity EtcRe: Why Do The Gospel Resurrection Accounts Differ? by TheMadame(op):
SIRTee15:
I think I already addressed this issue. Haven't I?
Are u actually looking for answers or u looking for faults in the bible at all cost. What exactly is your point.
U raised 4 contradictions, I added 2; using the scriptures I explained them all logically.
But u remain obstinate holding on to a straw as an excuse to reject the resurrection claim.
It's like u simply pursuing the letter and not the spirit.

Are u a critic or a Christian seeking answers.
Apparently all other ones made sense to u but wants to hold on to one seemingly contradiction.
If all other could be explained, what gives u the idea that the issue of bewildered women remain a contradiction.

I have seen people who became numb and couldn't talk after experiencing a traumatic situation.
I don't think seeing an angel, an unexpected empty tomb and being told a dead person being alive is a simple story. It's enough to give someone PTSD.

The best explanation is that the women initially said nothing- Mark 16: 8 and then later told the disciples what they saw (Matthew 28:8; Luke 24:9). It would make sense that they were frightened and didn’t know what to do or say. But then later, of course, they spoke up. It's simple logic.

If u are a bible critic pretending to be a Christian, I will advise u read up on chronology of resurrection, u may find your answers there.
Why are Christians always like this? Once you question their perceived beliefs you are automatically-
1. A bible critic pretending to be a Christian.
2. An unbeliever.
3. Not a proper Christian.
4.
To read your Bible and pray for understanding from the Holy spirit.

I have seen it all and your verbosity and assumptions can not change my own ideology of how to be a Christian believer. I am simply telling you that I am not convinced in what you are trying to tell me.
There are contradiction in the resurrection stories in the four canonical gospels . You don't have to accept what I saying neither do you need to force/spoon feed my with your own ideology.
On a final note I wish to advise our Christian brothers and sisters to stop trying to twist Bible passages into your own assumed meanings. Do not add and do not subtract. Revelation chapter 22 verse 18 is an adequate warning.
Good day.

Christianity EtcRe: Why Do The Gospel Resurrection Accounts Differ? by TheMadame(op):
SIRTee15:
I've gone thru the different resurrection accounts in the 4 gospel and the there's actually no contradiction at all.
In fact the different stories complement each other and when merged together the resurrection events makes logical sense

U raised 3 salient points which I will address.
1. The number of women or people who visited the tomb
2. Number of angels
3. Who rolled the stone away
4. What happened after they left the tomb.

1. How many women visited the Tomb?

The important thing to note here is that none of the gospel writers said 'only' a particular number visited the tomb. They simply mentioned names of women they knew that visited the tomb.
actual logical contradiction requires exclusionary clauses such as “only x, y, and z were there and no one else” or “only three people witnessed incident a.” None of the Gospel texts do that here; hence, no demonstrable contradiction exists (see Matthew 28:1; Mark 16:1; Luke 24:1-10; John 20:1).

Gospel of John seemingly makes it like only Mary Magdalene visited the tomb until we get to John 20:2. Mary finds the tomb empty, runs to Peter and (presumably) John, and says the following, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and WE do not know where they have laid Him.”

In reporting the words of Mary, John reveals that there were others with Mary.

2. Number of angels

The area which has generated the most discussion concerns the angels who were at the tomb of Jesus. Matthew and Mark relate that one angel addressed the women, while Luke and John say that two angels were at the tomb. This seems to be a discrepancy, with Matthew and Mark knowing of only one angel while Luke and John speak of two. However, Matthew and Mark do not say that there was only one angel at the tomb, but that one angel spoke to the women.

This does not contradict Luke and John, for Matthew and Mark specify that one angel spoke, but they do not say there was only one angel present or only one angel spoke. Quite possibly, one of the angels served as the spokesman for the two, thus he was emphasized.

3. . Who rolled the stone away

The issue with this question is centrally dealing with whether the stone was rolled away from the tomb when the women arrived. Notice that all but one account are in definite agreement. Mark, Luke, and John all say the stone had been moved when the women arrived. It is only Matthew who reports, or appears to report, that the stone was moved as the women were there. So let’s take a careful reading of the verses in question.

Now after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to look at the grave. And behold, a severe earthquake had occurred, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled away the stone and sat upon it.
(Mt. 28:1-2)

The event in verse 2 had already happened before the women arrived. They did not witness the earthquake or the angel rolling the stone. By the time they arrived the tomb, the stone was already rolled away. Matthew is only telling the readers how the stones was rolled away.

4. What happened after they left the tomb.

This is another area where we have a large degree of agreement between the Gospels. To varying degrees, the Gospels each report that the disciples were told. Or at least it was the intent to tell the disciples, which is all Matthew reveals. I will merge my explanation here with another seemingly contradiction which is who among the women saw Jesus.

If we study the accounts carefully, we can make the FF logical conclusion;

Mary Magdalene & the other women travel from Bethany to Jesus’ tomb.

Nearing the tomb, they notice the stone is rolled away. Mary runs to tell Peter and John while the rest of the women continued to the tomb.

With no corpse, empty tomb and encounter with strange men; the other women were initially shocked and took time for them to recover from these extraordinary encounter, until they got over their shock they told nobody.

Mary Magdalene returns to Jesus’ tomb with Peter and John.

Peter and John return to the house after seeing the empty tomb. Mary stays behind where she sees Jesus.

Afterwards, the other women returned to Bethany, stopping first in the city to report their findings to Clopas and other disciples. Thereafter, Jesus appears to the other women as they’re headed back to Bethany.

Another popular contradiction bible critics love to raise is the time the women visited the tomb which I will explain here.

All accounts indicate that it was early on the first day of the week. Matthew says it was as the day began to dawn. Mark, Luke and John all say “early”. The difficulty comes when we see John say that it was still dark, yet Mark say that the sun had risen.
Sunrise could vary in appearance depending on subjective observation. What is dark to some could be cloudy to another.
So these terms in reference to the same approximate time of day are not mutually exclusive.

Moreover, another explanation could be where the women journeyed from.
Earlier in the week some of the disciples lodged at Bethany, two miles from Jerusalem. It’s possible that the women were staying there for the Sabbath, and when John says it was “still dark”, he’s referring to the time they left Bethany and “went to the tomb”.
That’s more than enough time to go from “still dark” (Jn. 20:1) to “when the sun had risen” (Mk. 16:2).

While these explanations may be unsatisfactory to the skeptic, they are at the very least reasonable explanations to this apparent discrepancy and an open and honest mind will feel reassured about the consistent account in the bible.
You in your heart know that this your explanation is not realistic especially the one about what Mark says the women did after discovering the missing body and what the other gospels say.
These are simply matters of comprehension. You however have left that and started trying to explain what you BELIEVED happened, thus adding your own ideas and beliefs to what you think happened. Christians/believers must always remember Revelation 22 v18 whenever we try to interpret the holy book please 🙏.

Here is what Mark says happened after the women found the body gone from the tomb. Mark 16 v8.

Take it easy, don't let your blood rise!

Which I did!

You people and superiority! Are you collecting prize for it?

Where did I bully you and force you to accept what is not correct?

Yes I said it again there is not discrepancies in the four accounts of resurrection but only those with dishonesty will see one there as those accounts never GAVE POINT ON "ONLY"

About the time 3 said "EARLY IN THE MORNING" except one who used "while still dark" so is this a discrepancy or lack of understanding of time by the critics?

4:00-5:00AM is early in the morning and still dark. So how can a reasonable and honest person sees something wrong with this.

About personalities: they both report PLURAL of WOMEN visited the tomb and no any account used "ONLY"

Are you arguing that ALL THE FOUR MUST REPORT THIS EVENT WORD FOR WORD?

Not at all, the problem is inability to reconnect the four reports into one.

Where did I bully you?

Yes! There's no discrepancy.

Discrepancy will mean one account said there's an earthquake while the other will say THERE'S NO EARTHQUAKE

Or

The women met Angel and another will say the women didn't meet any Angel.

I don't need to.

Congratulations on that.

I've already said it's good to ask questions.

Me too do ask questions.
Once again you just skimmed through and gave your usual watery answers. Like I said only a fanatical person will insist there are no discrepancy in the resurrection stories in the four gospels. Your bullying and condescending tone does not and cannot change that.

You never said so, you only quoted definition of discrepancy which is never inline with the OP.

Never!
I am going to tell you something today, you don't come to another person's thread and try to bully your ideas onto them. You explain your argument and points succinctly and carefully. If you have a superior point, everyone will acknowledge and accept that superior argument and learn from it. As such everyone learns and gains from it.

You on the other hand have come here and been a bully trying to force me to accept what is not correct. Only a blind person or a religious famatic would argue in a weak and watery way that there are no discrepancy in the way the resurrection stories are told in the gospels. From the time,to how the event occurred,to the personalities involved,to whether the women told the Apostles or they kept quiet about it. Discrepancies run through the four stories.

It even makes a lot more sense to even say the difference stems from translations.
Not to come here and bully that there is no discrepancy. You need to check some of my threads here. I am a Christian but I am not a mindless one who does not ask questions.
